Gala Lads

"Experienced" - and proving it - might best describe the members of the 1962 International quartet champion, The Gala Lads from Alhambra, CA.

Garden State Quartet

These four sang together for about a year, then Verdick enlisted in the Navy. The search for a fourth part began and in May of 1943, the trio found Jack Briody, who had recently been discharged from the Army. Rau was a former nightclub entertainer and Freeland had been a member of a tumbling and singing act in vaudeville during the 1920s. He had also appeared in Irving Berlin's Broadway show, Yip, Yip, Yaphank. Briody had sung on the radio and in nightclubs with the Garden State Trio and Marrese was a glee club baritone until he began singing with the quartet.

Gas House Gang

In the 1930's The St. Louis Cardinals baseball team was nicknamed "The Gas House Gang" to describe the players' fiery attitude toward the game and their fun-loving style of play. In 1987 a quartet from the St. Louis area chose the name to match its own personality. Since that time, the foursome's energetic singing style and diverse repertoire have proven the appropriateness of the title to people across North America and Europe. After winning the 1988 Central States District Competition in their first attempt, they began a steady climb up the International Competition ladder which culminated in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where they were awarded the 1993 International Quartet Championship with the highest point total ever scored on the International stage.

Gateway Men's Chorus

In the fall of 1987, an advertisement ran in the Gay and Lesbian News Telegraph seeking men interested in forming St Louis's first gay chorus. By the spring of 1988, the chorus had grown to 22 men and, under the direction of Michael Cohrs, presented its first concert -- One Voice. With the staging of SHINE: A Celebration of Broadway in June 2017, under the direction of Robert Stumpf, the Gateway Men's Chorus will have presented its 90th major concert and concluded its 30th Anniversary season.

Throughout its first 30 years, the Gateway Men's Chorus has opened its stage to over 650 singers and performed over 1200 musical works. The chorus has commissioned a number of pieces through the years, including adaptations of poetry standards, Supreme Court speeches, and satirical works. Many of these works have since been performed by choruses throughout the country, carrying the legacy of GMC from coast-to- coast. And, in addition to appearing on stages around St. Louis, the chorus has performed in Kansas City, Denver, Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami, Montreal, San Jose, Tampa, and even once auditioned for America's Got Talent!

Three decades on we continue forward as a vanguard for the queer and transgender API community in the Bay Area. Gay Men's Chorus of Asheville

It seems like a lifetime ago that our chorus met and sang together. Everything has changed in so many ways and we are all trying very hard to adjust to a new "normal" as we navigate the ongoing pandemic.

For many of our members, singing together is not just a hobby or a social outlet; it is the defining essence of who we are as people and as spiritual beings. Singing together creates a space where we express not only our own identities, feelings and beliefs, but those of our greater LGBTQ community. We celebrate, mourn, reflect, exhort and sometimes raise our voices in anger. Sometimes we sing for those who no longer can.

Gaynotes

The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Harmony (SPEBSQSA) was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, so it was no surprise when Oklahoma quartets captured the first three International (then national) crowns. But it would be 20 years after the Society's formation before the title returned to the Sooner state.

In 1958 in Columbus, Ohio, four Tulsa men called the Gaynotes won the gold medals as International champions. They were Harold Jones, tenor; Howard Rinkel, lead; John Loots, bari, and Morris "Mo" Rector, bass. Howard and John had sung in a couple of earlier quartets, including one sponsored by an ice cream company which required that they perform at least twice a week.

Gel Caps

Since 1989, when the original members -- Bill Beasley, Russell Horsch, and Mike Reed -- first appeared together at the Michigan Theater in Jackson, MI for a Christmas show, The GelCaps have drawn a following of fans at car shows, bars, parties and many other events throughout lower Michigan, performing a cappella doo-wop in the traditional streetcorner style. They have performed for actor Jeff Daniels at the Purple Rose Theater in Chelsea, MI and at private parties in his home. In the 1996 election year they wrote and performed a song for Pat Paulsen's Presidential campaign. They also made it onto Zack Butler's list of "Silly Band Names" for March 1, 1999. Their music seems to appeal to all ages -- some people are taken back to younger days and simpler times, while others just appreciate the pure sounds and vocal intricacies of tight a cappella harmonies.

Gem City Chorus

There is so much more to Gem City than just meeting and singing a cappella music. Starting as a merger of two local chapters (Kettering & Dayton) in 1970 the Gem City Chorus has been dedicated to the education and preservation of the 'barbershop style' of a cappella harmony - one of the four American musical art forms We are a proud member of Sweet Adelines International, Region 4.

Gem City Chorus has won an impressive number of International medals including five gold, five silver, and one each of third, fourth, fifth and sixth - a feat achieved by no other Sweet Adeline chorus! The chorus currently is the sixth place International medalist.

Gentlemen Songsters

One definition of "songster" says that the term is "not often applied to human beings." We find that pretty strange, since the theme song of the famed a cappella Yale Whiffenpoofs includes the line: "Gentlemen Songsters off on a spree." That's where we got the term.

There really is no average Songster. Our individual musical talents and experience are diverse. Some of us have little or none, while others are accomplished musicians. We represent all walks of life and our age differences span 60 years. But as Aristotle said, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." The bottom line is that we are simply a group of men who share a love of music, performance, and friendships that continue through the years.

Our goal is to provide audiences with artistic and invigorating performances while we enjoy camaraderie. We have sung the national anthem at Gillette Stadium and the Boston Garden. We have organized and participated in shows that features classic barbershop melodies as well as pop tunes. And we have brought our voices to enhance numerous senior living, high school, university, and community events. We continue to strive for musical excellence in all we do, and in doing so continue to increase our presence in our surrounding communities.

Gentlemen's Agreement

The Gentlemen's Agreement, 1971 International champion, is one quartet that really was and "overnight success." Almost, anyway. Organized in December 1969, it qualified for the international contest in the spring, went to Atlantic City in July and came home with fourth-place medals. The following year, in New Orleans, the Detroit-area quartet won the whole ball of wax. But why not? Two of its members (baritone Glenn Van Tassell and tenor Al Rehkop) claimed their second gold medals in New Orleans; they had been half of the Auto Towners, 1966 champions. And the other two, lead Drayton Justus and bass Bob Whitledge, were equally talented, long-time barbershoppers, even though they didn't have medals to show for it.

Georgia Boy Choir

The purpose of the Georgia Boy Choir is to achieve the highest possible standard of musical excellence, while instilling in its members a life-long appreciation of music; an abiding love of beauty; a keen sense of respect for themselves and others; and the self-discipline necessary to become effective leaders in their families, their communities and the world.

Gettysburg Civic Chorus

The Gainesville Civic Chorus began its existence under the direction of Elwood Keister in 1976 as the Bicentennial Choir, and played a major role in the community's celebration of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. So gratifying were its musical efforts and so congenial were its activities that its members re-formed as the Gainesville Civic Chorus the following year. The permanent name selection deliberately underscores the Chorus' commitment to the cultural enrichment of the Gainesville community, a commitment which was quickly recognized. In 1978, the Chorus received the Gainesville Cultural Commission's award as the community's "best organization involved in the performing arts." It has also gained recognition by both the City Commission and the Alachua County Commission as the community's official chorus. Among the eighty or so members are retired citizens, business persons, university professors, professional musicians and others from many walks of life.

Gimme Four

Gimme Four is an International Semifinalist and District Champion barbershop quartet based in Caldwell, New Jersey. Paul, Dave, Will, and Joe have been singing together since 2011. The quartet loves to compete, loves to teach, loves to coach, loves to work, and loves to make friends, but more than anything else, loves to make music that leaves a lasting impression - one that changes someone's day, and maybe even their life.

Ginger ‘N’ Jazz

Ginger 'n' Jazz competed four times internationally before winning the championship. Their winning songs were You'd Be Surprised, Who'll Take My Place When I'm Gone, Take Me to the Land of Jazz, Pal of My Cradle Days, 'Deed I Do, Put Your Arms Around Me Honey, and So Long Mother.

Their coach was another champion, Dale Syverson (Tiffanys, 1973; Rumors, 1999). In 1989 Peggy Barnes (Gram) became the replacement for Judy Clancy as bass, and the group entertained until retirement in 1995. Debbie was the founding director of Sooner Sensations Chorus in Oklahoma City until her untimely passing in August, 2015. Glad

As Contemporary Christian Music magazine describes it, "Nearly two decades ago, Glad's elegant vocals helped set them apart from other pioneers of contemporary Christian music. That vocal sound has since evolved into a complex, self-sustaining life form of it's own..." For those of us in the field of a cappella music it is the vocals which the magazine mentions that are the primary interest in Glad. That's not the whole story, however. You see they really are a progressive Christian rock band. They got together on the campus of West Chester State University, near Philadelphia, in the early l970's. Early on the predilection toward complex vocals with classical and jazz overtones began to distinguish the band.

The group made a bold leap into the secular with their release of the fabulous recording A Cappella Gershwin. It not only set the a cappella world buzzing, but found us listening to their religious work. The beauty of their music is the most dynamic ministry that there could be. It has been pouring out of the hearts of these men for over twenty-five years and has been found on twenty recordings.

Go Fish

Pop music has long known the value of sampling and building upon a well-loved Motown hit. Toys R Us fights to keep shelves stocked with the latest twists on century-old board games, from Star Wars Battleship to Toy Story Memory. And with new versions of such favorite films as Karate Kid and Footloose, it seems even Hollywood has gotten the message: You can't beat a classic. Nostalgic moms and dads are lining up with kids in tow, ready to share the growing line-up of souped-up childhood favorites.

So maybe, just maybe, when acclaimed family entertainers Go Fish hatched a seemingly hair-brained scheme to bring hymns to kids, the beloved group-who, among numerous accolades, has appeared on The Today Show and performed before a capacity crowd at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center-just might have known what they were doing. They're Kickin' It Old School.

Gold Coast Concert Chorus

The Gold Coast Concert Chorus began in January, 1988. For its first program, under the direction of Kurt Berensten, the Chorus' original 35 singers and two other choirs in Ventura, presented Mendelssohn's "Hymn of Praise" to celebrate Trinity Lutheran Church's 50th anniversary. The original goal of the chorus was to "provide an opportunity for people to sing, but without the stringent qualifications required by organizations with a classical repertoire." This philosophy piqued the interest of the choral community and the chorus quickly expanded. Today, the Gold Coast Concert Chorus is proud to be Ventura's largest community chorus consisting of over 100 active singers.
