Milwaukee Choristers

The Milwaukee Choristers, Inc., seeks to provide for its members and the public a rich and diverse musical experience that is anchored in the best of the choral repertory, and aspires to a consistent level of performance that represents the finest of the choral art.

We have distinguished ourselves as one of Milwaukee's most versatile and popular mixed voice choruses for more than 85 years.

We began in November, 1933 when a group of nearly 20 graduates of Milwaukee's Riverside High School A Cappella Choir decided to meet, rehearse and, if possible, perform. With our high school conductor, Ellen Sargeant, on the podium, the dream was fulfilled and the rest is history.

In our eight decades of existence, the Choristers have had only seven conductors: Ellen Sargeant, Dorothy Royt, Donald Mohr, Roger Tweiten, Mark Aamot and B.H. Diekhoff. Currently, the choir is led by Dr. James B. Kinchen, Jr. of Sturtevant, WI, who was selected as the group's Music Director in 1993. Dr. Kinchen is a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Milwaukee Symphony Chorus

The 150-member volunteer chorus has been praised by reviewers for "technical agility," "remarkable ensemble cohesion," and "tremendous clarity." In addition to performances with the MSO, the chorus has appeared on public television and recorded performances on radio stations throughout the country. The chorus has performed a cappella concerts to sold-out audiences and has made guest appearances with other performing arts groups including Present Music, Milwaukee Ballet, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The chorus has also made appearances at suburban Chicago's famed Ravinia Festival.

Mineola Choral Society

The Mineola Choral Society of Long Island, now celebrating our 73rd concert season, continues to grow both in numbers and repertoire. Consisting of 80 amateur singers from many professions and walks of life, the Mineola Choral Society is still much the same as it was when we began, rehearsing Monday evenings in a friendly, congenial atmosphere and performing two major concerts each season. Over the years, our concerts have featured many classical masterworks from immortals such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Haydn, Handel and Schubert, as well as the music of more modern composers including Berlin, Bernstein, Copland, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gershwin, Webber, Orff, Durufle, Poulenc and many others. Below is a synopsis of our last five concerts.

Minimum Wage

Minimum Wage is a group that can only be described as inventive, insane and delightful! Picture the Marx Brothers, Forever Plaid and the Flying Karamozov Brothers rolled into one. Por example, one might witness a lecture on Spatula techniques that goes hilariously awry. Or a capricious, musical history lesson about the "'Histoire du le Burger." Or even a rap number with wildly eclectic choreography. They won a Bistro award for Outstanding Musical Comedy Act by BackStage Magazine and in 1999 they were chosen as the Mid Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes Champions and went on to win "Audience Favorite" in the National Finals. They can be seen pseudo- regularly on the Food Network's, Doorknock Dinners and other TV appearances include The Fox Network, Comedy Central, Good Day New York, The Veronica Network and America's Funniest People(Grand Prize Winners).

Minneapolis Commodores

The Minneapolis Commodore Chorus chartered with the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.) in 1944 and continues that association with the current Barbershop Harmony Society. Our BHS District is Land O' Lakes.

It has evolved into an outstanding adult choral ensemble which presents performances in the fall and spring. While its members come from many different backgrounds and occupations, the goal of the Chorale is the same today as it was at its inception-to provide the audience with a rich and varied musical experience that is unique to this area

Minnesota Valley Men’s Chorale

The Minnesota Valley Men's Chorale was organized in September of 2003. Steven Boehlke retired from Rosemount High School after 36 years as a public school choral director. The chorale is a non-auditioned ensemble dedicated to singing together as a community and sharing the male chorus repertoire with the community

The chorale has a unique rehearsal schedule. We have a two concert season, fall and spring. Rehearsals begin approximately twelve weeks before the concerts. Traditionally, the fall concert is two weeks before Thanksgiving. The chorale then breaks for the holiday season. Rehearsals begin again the third week in January with concerts approximately 12 weeks later. The chorale has found that many men want to sing, but are involved in careers that won't allow them to sing with ensembles that meet for nine months.

Minnetonka Choral Society

For those who love to sing, there is little that is more satisfying than hearing voices joining together in song. Minnetonka Choral Society (MCS) offers those in the west metro of Minneapolis a music group to do just that. Tight harmonies are rewarding to hear resonate. A resolving chord brings a sense of completion. A melody can be as pleasing to sing, as it is to hear. Singers love to learn new music as well as return to an old standard on occasion. Those are just some of the reasons why the members of the MCS join the group and return year after year. It's fun to sing!

As passionate advocates for music as a form of peace making, mirabai seeks to engage audiences in meaningful explorations of musics, texts, and conversation around contemporary issues of our time.

Miracles

American vocal group that helped define the Motown sound of the 1960s; led by one of the most gifted, influential singer-songwriters in 20th-century popular music. Whether writing for fellow artists Mary Wells, the Temptations, or Marvin Gaye or performing with the Miracles, singer-lyricist-arranger-producer Robinson created songs that were supremely balanced between the joy and pain of love. That high-level repertoire then becomes the vehicle for education in performance practice, cultural context, language and understanding of text, musicianship and vocal technique

Misfits

Art Bielan, lead, had sung with a number of quartets, including the Suberpa Four, the State Four, and the Forges Post quartet, the latter group being an American Legion foursome. Cy "You're Wrong" Perkins, who had sung baritone for a quarter century, was happy to point out other fellows' mistakes, thereby endearing himself to many barbershoppers. Modernaires

When one thinks or speaks of "The Modernaires", immediately you relate to their classic 1941-1942 association with "American's Number One Dance Band," Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. Yet, superb as each and every one of their Miller performances were, "The Modernaires", had already existed, performed and recorded for several years prior and would continue to do so for more than half a century after their sensational 19-month stint with that legendary leader.

Talent springs from all over, and in the early 1930's, Buffalo, New York was the wellspring for a trio of young men who liked to sing. Harold Dickinson (lead and second tenor), Bill Conway (baritone) and Chuck Goldstein (first tenor) were three Lafayette High School students from the wintry city of Buffalo. In 1935 as Glenn Miller Rehersal a trio, they called the group the "The Three Weary Willies", performing at high school functions and then on WGR local radio.

Moira Smiley and VOCO

Moira Smiley & VOCO is a visionary blend of voices - redefining harmony singing with the power & physicality of folksong, the avant-garde fearlessness of Bela Bartok and the delicious, vaudevillian accompaniment of cello, banjo, accordion and body percussion. Moira Smiley leads an ensemble of extraordinary musicians who share a passion for spreading powerful, emotional music with lush four-part vocal harmony, cello, accordion and banjo. Original improvisation-built songs steeped in Appalachia and Eastern Europe.

Named #1 a cappella group in the U.S. in 2007, VOCO is the energy of street singing and the elegance of a string quartet. Recently featured in Dirty Linen and on more than 100 radio stations nationwide on NPR's "Harmonia", VOCO has released two critically acclaimed CDs in '08-'09: "Small Worlds" and "Circle, Square, Diamond & Flag". VOCO is sweet, hard-driving Americana mixed with crooked eastern European dance and dissonance. It's all rounded out with body-stompin' percussive movement and joyous, magnificent, hair-raising harmonies - music that mourns and dances at the same time.

Monroeville Community Chorus

The Monroeville Chorus was founded in 1953 and sang its first concerts in 1954. The group was founded by a group of church musicians who wanted to sing something other than church music in four-part harmony.

Since that time, much has changed about the chorus. We have changed personnel. We have changed styles of music. We have changed equipment. We now carry our own risers, keyboard and amplification equipment to each concert. We have changed directors and accompanists. We have changed audiences.

Now I know what you are thinking - "What's left?" We are STILL a group of musicians who like to have fun with our music and sing in four-part harmony. We STILL like to perform for groups in the surrounding communities.

The Big Choir meets for two seasons every year: from August/September to December, and again from January to May/June. At the end of every season we usually perform two concerts, one in Montpelier for our loyal local fans, and one elsewhere-often in Vermont, but sometimes out of state. The choir combines soul, jazz, blues, and original and traditional gospel music to produce an exuberant sound. We sing! We clap! We shout! We play! We laugh! Sometimes we cry. We do all this at Trinity United Methodist Church of Montpelier, Vermont, during our Monday night rehearsals from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m. The Big Choir is un-auditioned, and we learn all our music by rote, so reading music is not required. To join Big Choir the only thing you need to do is show up on Monday night! (Although an email introducing yourself beforehand would not be remiss.) All are welcome to join who wish to share in this glorious musical tradition.

Moonglows

Among the most seminal R&B and doo wop groups of all time, the Moonglows' lineup featured some of the genre's greatest pure singers. The original lineup from Louisville included Bobby Lester, Harvey Fuqua, Alexander Graves, and Prentiss Barnes, with guitarist Billy Johnson. They were originally called the Crazy Sounds, but were renamed by disc jockey Alan Freed as the Moonglows. The group also cut some recordings as the Moonlighters. Their first major hit was the number one R&B gem "Sincerely" for Chess in 1954, which reached number 20 on the pop charts. They enjoyed five more Top Ten R&B hits on Chess from 1955 to 1958, among them "Most of All," "We Go Together," "See Saw," and "Please Send Me Someone to Love," as well as "Ten Commandments of Love." Fuqua, the nephew of Charlie Fuqua of the Ink Spots, left in 1958. He recorded "Ten Commandments of Love" as Harvey & the Moonglows with Marvin Gaye, Reese Palmner, James Knowland, and Chester Simmons before founding his own label, Tri-Phi. Fuqua created and produced the Spinners in 1961 and wrote and produced for Motown until the early '70s.
