There is so much more to Gem City than just meeting and singing a cappella music. Starting as a merger of two local chapters (Kettering & Dayton) in 1970 the Gem City Chorus has been dedicated to the education and preservation of the 'barbershop style' of a cappella harmony - one of the four American musical art forms We are a proud member of Sweet Adelines International, Region 4.
Gem City Chorus has won an impressive number of International medals including five gold, five silver, and one each of third, fourth, fifth and sixth - a feat achieved by no other Sweet Adeline chorus! The chorus currently is the sixth place International medalist.
We perform in annual shows, for the community, work on our skills. learn new music and provide musical education for new and potential members. Our new director is Troy Kaper. Troy took over as interim in July and directed us through our Christmas show. Troy is now the new director of Gem City and will take us to our next Regional competition in April 2011.

Review: Longtime Sweet Adelines fans, new fans and fans-to-be, are in for a treat here. 5-time Gold Medal Champs The Gem City Chorus has compiled this wonderful collection of songs from their cds Double Exposure (1975), Reflections (1981), and Gem City Live! (1991), under Master Director Jean Barford. Seeing them perform live must be amazing, because it's clear from listening to this cd that these women really let it all hang out musically! Some of our favorites are Blues In The Night, Swing Down Chariot, Get Happy, My Man, If I Were a Rich Man, Second Hand Man, and Try A Little Kindness. It's hard to pick, because the quality and feeling of all the songs is so consistently high. Great stuff from a hard-working, talented group!
Songlist: Showtime, Purlie, Heartaches, Blues in the Night, Swing Down Chariot, One of Those Songs, Get Happy, I Got Lost in His Arms, Lord, You Made the Night Too Long, Songs, My Man, If I Were a Rich Man, That Old Quartet of Mine, Alabam' Medley, End of the Road, Second Hand Man, Try a Little Kindness, Applause
Review: Gem City won the Sweet Adelines Internationals in the Chorus Category an unprecedented five times! How did they do it? Great material, enthusiastically performed and dynamically arranged! Makes it sound simple, doesn't it? Directed by Jean Barford, this Dayton Ohio aggregate's sound is as unified as can be, its articulation crisp, timing right on the money. 'As Time Goes By' is swung a little faster than average, 'How's Every Little Thing In Dixie' exaggerates the phrasing effectively, hurrying through the tune like the March Hare. Other great songs: 'Mississippi Medley,' 'The Joint Is Jumpin',' and 'It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing Medley.'
Songlist: This Is The Moment, Showtime, Sentimental Journey, Runnin' Wild, End Of The Road, Billy-A-Dick, As Time Goes By, How's Every Little Thing In Dixie, God Bless America, Battle Hymn Of The Republic, Blow, Gabriel, Blow, The Joint Is Jumpin', Heartaches, Alabama Jubilee Bound Medley, That's What God Made Mothers For, One Of Those Songs, Mississippi Medley, Wild Beneath My Wings, It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing Medley
