Sounds of Harmony

In 1946, we began as 20 members of a Moose Lodge glee club, six of whom were already barbershoppers. We organized as a barbershop chorus in August 1948, and were officially chartered as the Belleville Bell Notes from Belleville, Illinois, by the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quarter Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), now the Barbershop Harmony Society. Our initial group of 35 members held its first annual show May 21, 1950, and began a long history of community activity.

In 2004, we changed our name to the Southwestern Illinois Sounds of Harmony Barbershop Chorus, indicative of the region we represent. Although we remain chartered in Belleville, Illinois, we rehearse in Fairview Heights and our members come from all over the St. Louis Metro East area and from as far away as 80 miles. Four-part barbershop harmony is the core of what we sing, but our repertory includes many contemporary songs. Today, our total membership stands at 34 and approximately 24 people make up our singing chorus.

Over the years, our chorus and quartets have performed for benefits, chambers of commerce, churches, hospital groups, nursing homes, a shopping mall, teachers' associations, and numerous other community events and organizations. We participate in many street fairs and parades in communities throughout Southwestern Illinois and support a variety of charities in our region.

Southern Arizona Women's Chorus

The women's chorus began in 1981 as a project for a University of Arizona graduate student. After his graduation, instead of disbanding, the group came under the direction of the late Terry Howell and incorporated as the Foothills Women's Chorus. Terry retired in 1998 to pursue his work with the Rose Theatre Company and the women's chorus hired Terrie Ashbaugh as music director.

In the summer of 2006, the chorus changed its name to reflect a new image and status. Now operating as the Southern Arizona Women's Chorus, the women perform from the ever expanding repertoire written specifically for women's or treble voices. As the premier women's chorus of Tucson, they strive to sing quality music that showcases the women's voices and fulfills their desire to entertain. Performances have included such music as the late Baroque period "Missa de Profunctis" on the same program as Broadway medleys, or Spanish folksongs and jazzy samba. The music is extremely diverse and sometimes very difficult. However, the women find that learning the music in a fun and encouraging environment keeps them coming back for more. Their reward is realizing something previously thought impossible. Singing with this chorus provides a deep sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging that comes from the caring and support these women extend to each other.

Founded in the fall of 2018 by William Culverhouse, STSC is based in Binghamton, New York, and draws singers from as far as Ithaca, Oneonta, Elmira, and northeast Pennsylvania. STSC was formed in order to offer a wide variety of vocal ensemble music in multiple configurations, ranging from an intimate one-singer-per-part madrigal ensemble to a chamber choir of thirty-two accomplished singers. The groupings employ a variety of rehearsal models, but aim to accommodate the busy lives of the region's most highly skilled singers by avoiding recurring weekly rehearsal commitments, opting instead for a project-based cluster-rehearsal approach.

Many of the singers in STSC are music educators in regional school systems who are also professional-level singers, and their contributions to STSC enrich not only our audiences' musical lives, but also the musical lives of their students. The organization's debut concert on October 26, 2018 featured eighteen singers in a performance of Spanish Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria's Missa O quam gloriosum. Subsequent performances have featured a program of Italian Renaissance madrigals, programs of music for Lent and All Souls, and a collaboration with Binghamton University and SUNY-Oneonta for Ralph Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem.
