Wilmington Community Chorus

The Wilmington Community Chorus is a place where people from all walks of life can come together and sing and make music together. It's a new type of chorus that is open to every singer - no matter where they are in their singing career. For those singers who have much experience reading music and singing, they'll be incredibly helpful guiding the way for younger and less experienced singers.

For those just starting out, all vocal parts will be pre-recorded and put online so that parts may be learned in advance of rehearsals and you'll be taught how to "read along" in an intuitive way. ALL singers are welcome in our chorus. (Please note, however, this is an adult chorus, with some exceptions made for older high school singers.)

Our repertoire will differ than most. While we certainly want to perform and honor traditional choral music, we'll also show that the human voice is capable of creating dynamic and intriguing and thought-provoking music. This will include acappella pieces, jazz, contemporary music, cabaret pieces and more. Music and shows that are vocally fantastic and unique and draw the audience back and wanting more! Our goal is to present three concerts per year: one holiday concert, one spring concert, and one "cabaret" style performance where members can perform some of their favorite tunes in costume and with choreography. We'd also like to utilitze the town local TV channel and engage the town community as often as possible.

We want show the vast amount of talent that Wilmingon has to offer and to show that music has a place in our community. It brings joy, helps us celebrate our triumphs and troubles, tells our stories, and brings us all together as one - as a community. Our chorus will help, heal, and spread hope and happiness in our community.

(Unison and Windy City Slickers are currently on hiatus.)

Each ensemble in WCPA performs a variety of musical styles from classical to pop. We pride ourselves on musical excellence regardless of the style of music. The choruses have a history of performing major choral works including special commissioned pieces.

In September 2003, the performing ensembles of WCPA made history by becoming the first choruses in a Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) organization to sing the National Anthem at an Illinois professional sporting event, at the Chicago Free Press sponsored "Out At The Ballgame" day at U.S. Cellular Field, opening for the Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians game.

Wiregrass Sacred Harp Singers

African American Sacred Harp singing conventions in southeastern Alabama began near the last third of the 19th century. While singing, for the most part, the same repertory of Sacred Harp music as their Anglo American counterparts, a vocal stylistic difference is clearly apparent.

During a typical convention singing the participants arrange themselves in a square according to voice part, the basses facing the trebles, and the tenors facing the altos. A song leader stands in the middle of the square leading the singers first through the notes to the songs and then through the lyrics, a practice emanating from the traditional singing school classes, where singers are taught to sing the notes and then the words.

Wise Guys

The original members of Wise Guys met in 1995. From the beginning, the biggest obstacle was getting together for rehearsals. You see, the quartet members have never lived in the same city. Over the history of the quartet, the guys have lived in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Orlando and Gainesville, Florida as well as in Atlanta GA, Raleigh NC, and Columbia SC. Whew! In the fall of 1998, they became Sunshine District (State of Florida) Champions. Wise Guys have continued to compete with the best quartets in the world and are currently ranked 27th internationally. Today, the quartet consists of four experienced performers with a variety of musical backgrounds. As you will read, a couple of the guys are professional musicians. Their comedic flair continues to delight audiences around the globe. As if their music wasn't big enough, with a minimum height of six foot three inches tall, the fingertip-to-fingertip span of this svelte foursome resembles that of Boeing 747. The common thread between them is the love of entertaining audiences, thus these gentle giants have begun carving their own niche in the Barbershop Harmony Society as well as in the hearts of many.

The Men of Song chorus also travels the "Northeastern District" twice a year competing with other choruses from throughout New England, northern New York, and the Canadian maritime province area.

It has often been said that "The Men of Song" opens the Worcester area Christmas Season each year with their Annual Show at Mechanics Hall." The show is held every year on the Saturday evening before Thanksgiving at Mechanics Hall.

World House Choir

To perform music that motivates and inspires our communities toward justice, diversity, and equality as we strive for peace and create our web of mutuality.

The Rev. Derrick Weston and Dr. Catherine Roma met in the summer of 2012. They were encouraged to meet one another because people felt they had the same focus about creating a peace and justice choir. Rev. Weston was Director of the Coretta Scott King Center and minister of the Presbyterian church in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In September 2012, they worked together to form an embryonic choir that sang for world peace day celebration at the Presbyterian Church.

After that successful effort, a mission statement was created: "To perform music that motivates and inspires our communities toward justice, diversity and equality as we strive for peace and to create our web of mutuality." Rev. Weston and Dr. Roma wanted the choir to be associated with the Coretta Scott King Center at Antioch College and embarked on a collaboration.

The choir grew throughout 2013. The first major collaboration was for the CSK birthday celebration at the CSK Center at Antioch College in April 2013. This was considered the "official" launch of the choir and the beginning of the public phase of our collaboration. Prior to the WHC's creation there were occasional celebrations of Ms. King's life at the CSK center.

From the beginning, Antioch College has graciously provided practice space in the CSK Center or elsewhere on campus and child care has been provided by Antioch College students. Louise Smith (Dean of Community Life) and Jennifer Berman (Community Life Liason) have been very supportive and have helped the collaboration to grow.

Through the music we sing, we hope to give voice to these experiences and foster community between ourselves and others.
