Robert H. Young : Poems Set to Music

Review: Robert Young's choral writings are famous for their warm, rich voicings, suspensions and resolutions. Using the poem of one of his favorite authors, Christina Rossetti, he has created another small masterpiece. The setting of "Lovesight" illuminates the rich beauty of the Dante Rossetti text. The expression is full and deep in both word and music. Using a cappella voices and violin obbligato, the new American sea-chantey "Annabel Lee" mourns the loss of the storyteller's love, Annabel Lee. An excellent concert piece for high school. The title "Chanticleer" alone makes us think of musical excellence, and Robert Young's setting of the William Austin (1587-1633) poem more than meets the demand. Celebrating the incarnation of Christ, this piece contains the classic sounds for which Robert Young has become famous. Excellent for church or concert.

Review: Taken from the first arrangements on which Robert Shaw and Alice Parker collaborated, these titles were selected from hundreds of familiar and forgotten works for their musical and poetic excellence. Ron Kean : The Journey of Harriet Tubman

Review: This 5-movement, multi-media, Choral Drama honors one of the great heroes of the emancipation era. Scholars have no idea how these spirituals were performed before the Civil War, but they agree that there was probably very little European influence. Dr. Kean's goal was to compose and arrange music in a style that is evocative of the enslaved Africans' frame of mind based upon their west African musical heritage and in their sociological context. He chose to accompany the spirituals with kalimba (thumb piano) to honor the west African tradition of connecting with ancestors and the marimba to sound like the west African balafon. Review: Snow Angel is an evocative five-movement choral work that explores themes of love, rebirth, and beauty through the eyes of children and the heavenly army of angels that watch over them, yearning to make a difference to their lives. The work may be performed with narration, in which three angels present their perspectives on their earthly charges. Quartel weaves a haunting and poignant cello line throughout the work, and a vibrant part for djembe in movement four, 'Sweet child', carries the listener from the ethereal and mystical realm the work predominantly inhabits into an emphatic anthem with a distinctly African feel. The musical language is emotive and pictorial, allowing performers to play an active role in the storytelling.
