First performed at a Service of Thanksgiving for Her Majesty The Queen at St Paul's Cathedral, London, on 3rd June 2022 by the choirs of St Paul's Cathedral and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal conducted by Andrew Carwood, with William Fox, organ. Amongst many ancient writings which examine the importance of Wisdom in our life on earth is the Old Testament Book of Proverbs. The short selection of verses (from Proverbs, Chapter 3) set to music in this anthem celebrate 'the one who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding'.

Review: This short setting of Rorate Coeli a text associated with the Matins service at Advent was written in 1983 and first performed by the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, as part of the Advent Carol Service held every year in Trinity College Chapel. Judith Weir : Like as the Hart

Review: Composed for the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey, London, on 19 September 2022, Like as the hart is a setting of verses from Psalm 42 for four-part choir with occasional divisi. The words and music speak at first of the soul's great sadness and thirst for reassurance; but as the psalm progresses, the mood becomes calmer and more resolved, culminating in consolation, with the words Put thy trust in God.

Review: Three short choral settings of peoms by George Herbert, commissioned by The Spitalfields Festival in memory of Peter Lerwill, a generous supporter of the festival. The first performance of the set took place in June 2005 at Christ Church, Spitalfields, by The Cardinall's Musick with Andrew Carwood. The textures of Weir's settings range from the clarity of the Madrigal and Hymn to more complex writing with the choir splitting into as many as eight parts.

K. Scott Warren : Three Spirituals

Review: This lively setting of 'Ain'-a That Good News' is perfect for all choirs looking to energize any church service or concert. A chromatic modulation jump starts each new verse, as the energy and excitement is ratcheted up a notch. The canon in the penultimate verse adds variety to the otherwise homophonic texture, and the music finishes brightly with volume and excitement. Warren rejuvenates 'Go Tell it on the Mountain' by skilfully varying the metre between 7/8 and 6/8 in the refrain and presenting each verse differently. This clever arrangement is perfectly suited for concerts and church services alike. In the haunting and plaintive setting of 'Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,' Warren creatively evokes a stark tone of loneliness and despair with descending chromatic inner voices in the opening. What follows is a rich, reflective harmonic texture filled with chromatic surprises.

Karl Jenkins : Adiemus Colores

Review: Adiemus Colores marks Karl Jenkins' return after ten years to the series that helped make his name, and it draws inspiration from the sights, sounds, colors and rhythms of Latin American music. As with the original Adiemus, Jenkins combines classical principles with the flavors of world and ethnic music supported by lively percussion. His choral writing adopts an invented language with no meaning, like scat singing in jazz. Each movement is named in Spanish after a color and explores the mood each evokes for the composer, embracing Brazilian samba, Argentinian tango and Spanish bolero. Adiemus Colores is scored for choir and ensemble with soloists, with a total duration of 75 minutes.

Karl Jenkins : Te Deum

Review: (2008, 15 minutes) Karl Jenkins's uplifting and celebratory Te Deum (text in Latin), premiered in November 2008, is now available on sale as a vocal score. The work is moderate length (15 minutes) and scored for strings, trumpets, percussion and organ, making it accessible to choirs of all sizes. Jenkins is the Patron of the Liverpool Welsh Choral, who commissioned the new work to celebrate the city's European Capital of Culture year.

Review: To celebrate their 40th anniversary the Kings Singers compiled a collection of their most-requested arrangements from the past 15 years since the release of the still best-selling 25th anniversary songbook. Some. like "Danny Boy", "All I Ask Of You" and "Blackbird" date from earlier in the group's history but are still performed regularly by the group and choirs all over the world. King's Singers : The Quiet Heart: Choral Essays Vol 1

Review: From the King's Singers' exquisite album The Quiet Heart - Choral Essays Volume 1, drawn from the sacred repertoire of the Salvation Army, these 13 selections are a reflective musical journey into the spirit. The invitation to perform in March 2005 as guest of the marvellous Hendon Salvation Army Band in heir special concert "Hendon Highlights" at London's Royal Festival Hall led to a relationship which resulted in the re-arranging and recording of 19 beautiful hymns for the CD, The Quiet Heart, on the SP&S label.Rather then just perform what were in many cases simple four-part hymns, they decided to take advantage of their six-part status, and so the hymns were mostly re-arranged with the inclusion of low 5ths to complement bass notes, double tunes (soprano and baritone) and the occasional extra harmony note. Some had Piano accompaniment, so for these they either converted them into vocal accompaniments or wrote a new vocal pattern to go with the tune. So here is the companion volume to the CD, in which we have included 13 of the tracks in the exact voicings as heard on the album. They work equally well in a concert hall or in a church.

Kirke Mechem : Choral Collection

Review: Kirke Mechem is a prolific American composer with a catalogue of over 250 works. He enjoys an international presence, as ASCAP recently registered concert performances of his music in 42 countries. This is a collection of his works for unaccompanied chorus. From Psalm 137, "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion," this a cappella motet is filled with longing and deep emotion. "Agnus De" is a stunningly beautiful new setting of the Latin text, this work is vocally expressive and immensely rewarding in performance. The old American folksong "Too Young To Marry" provides the text for this setting. The composer has adapted into an original madrigal, using fa-la-la refrains to replace the traditional nonsense syllables. "They That Mourn" forms a requiem in miniature, with varied vocal textures and harmonies and dynamic contrasts. This setting is new music to the words of an old spiritual "Kum Ba Ya". Believed to come from the Gullah language of the South Carolina sea islands, this setting explores the rhythmic possibilities of the words and the striking musical qualities of the consonants and vowels.

Lambert, Hendricks and Ross : Vocal Jazz Arrangements

Review: Lambert Hendricks & Ross mastered the art of vocal bebop and the Jon Hendricks classic "Everybody's Boppin'" proves the point with its frantic tempo and the fast swing groove underneath. A vocal jazz tour-de-force! "Birdland" is a quintessential jazz classic with lyrics by the incomparable Jon Hendricks in a funky fusion setting by noted arranger Paris Rutherford. A perfect showcase for vocal jazz groups! Darmon Meader's arrangement of "Charleston Alley" pays tribute to Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, as well as Charlie Barnet, while expanding the voicings, and also placing the song in a much more "SATB-friendly" key. This arrangement is a great introduction to the classic vocalese style of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, and will work well for most medium to advanced vocal jazz groups.

Review: Nights in Armor is a four-movement suite for a cappella chorus evoking the legend of King Arthur as related by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The first movement "Merlin's Riddle" is a quirky, dance-like incantation, in which the famous sorcerer prophesies Arthur's coming. The second movement "The Knight and His Queen" is an imagined poem from the knight Lancelot to Queen Guinevere expressively calls forth feelings of unfulfillable love. "Tristram's Madrigal" - Sprightly, teasing music celebrates the joys of living in the moment, boldly blind to its consequences. "Arthur's Final Words" are the words of the mortally wounded King Arthur reflecting on life and the quest for ideals; the music artfully gives life to this wisdom.
