Southern Gospel CDs and Songbooks

Southern gospel music, also sometimes referred to as “classic gospel,” has been around since the 1950s, though since the 1980s there has been a revival in its well-deserved popularity. The style is an enticing mix of Sacred Harp and bluegrass, and has the best of both worlds. So it’s no surprise that some of the best Christian artists of recent decades have recorded these stellar albums in a Southern Gospel style. You know some of the groups, you know some of the songs – this is your chance to explore, and enjoy, the rest of them.

Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver : Heaven's Joy Await

Review: Doyle Lawson was born in Tennessee. His dad sang in a gospel quartet so he grew up surrounded by music. In his teens he was already a skilled guitar, mandolin and banjo player, but focused on the mandolin. During the early years of his professional career he played with Jimmy Martin's Sunny Mountain Boys, J.D. Crowe's Kentucky Mountain Boys and recorded with Red Allen. From 1971 until 1979 he was a member of the Country Gentlemen and recorded ten albums with them. In l979 he formed Quicksilver with whom he has recorded ever since. On each of their albums they would sing one or two a cappella quartet gospel songs and were such fine harmony singers that, in 1988, they recorded one whole album of them. This CD exemplifies the tradition which passed from shape note singing through country quartets such as the Chestnut Grove Quartet to the Bluegrass bands via Ralph Stanley. Oh, they're great harmony singers, too!

Songlist: Lord I've Been A Hard Working Pilgrim, I Know I'll Feel At Home, Climbing Up The Mountain, Heaven's Joy Awaits, Will Someone Be Waiting, Must Jesus Bear The Cross Alone, Help Me Lord To Stand, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Beyond The Sunset For Me, Won't It Be A Happy Meeting, Let Me Go Home, How Long

Gaither Vocal Band : Gaither A Cappella

Review: All-male quartet the Gaither Vocal Band, winners of 4 Grammys and many other awards, give us only pictures of themselves in the liner notes of "A Cappella," the fact that this is part of the "Gaither Gospel Series" and the lyrics to these beautiful, inspirational songs. Several of these 12 songs are originals, "I Then Shall Live" with words by Gloria Gaither, and "Center of My Joy" and "Gentle Shepherd" with words by Gloria and music by William Gaither. Other favorites are "Delivered From the Hands of Pharoah," "Low Down the Chariot," "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Jesus! Simple, powerful harmonies, heartfelt faith, beautiful words, arrangements and music-this is some of the best Contemporary Christian/Gospel we have heard! Companion Songbook.

Isaacs : Bluegrass A Cappella

Review: A family group based in Lafollette, TN, the current group members are Lily, Ben, Sonya and Rebecca Isaacs and Rebecca's husband John Bowman. Traveling and singing together for over 30 years, they have a unique style that marries bluegrass music with gospel lyrics. Their concert venues have ranged from the Grand Ole Opry, to Carnegie Hall, and they have won multiple Bluegrass awards for Album of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year. We particularly love the spirited original by David Marshall, "Don't You Want To Go To Heaven," three originals by Sonya, "Least I Can Do" (written with Ben Isaacs), the lovely "What Do You See" (sung to the baby Jesus), and "There Through It All" (written with her sister Rebecca); Joe Isaac's "Reaping In the Spirit," and James Hendrix' "I Have A Father Who Can." Covers of "The Star Spangled Banner," "Talk About Suffering" and "Amazing Grace" are fine and soulful. The deep Gospel feeling of these songs goes well with the Bluegrass harmonies, and the pure, simple a cappella voices. "Bluegrass" is the good, authentic stuff, one of the best a cappella Gospel CDs of the year!

Songlist: Don't You Want To Go To Heaven, Least I Can Do, What Do You See, Christ Arose, There Through It All, Star Spangled Banner, Reaping The Spirit, Talk About Suffering, Amazing Grace, I Have A Father Who Can

Various Artists : Close Harmony: A History of Southern Gospel Music 1920 - 1955

Review: This is one of those historic compilations with pages of history in 5-point type and lots of cool old photos, and wonderful music that we haven't heard before but want to hear more of! This is brought to us by the SMGA, Southern Gospel Music Association, whose purpose was to build a Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which opened in Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN in 1999. We just have to love groups called Rebels Quartet featuring Big Jim Waits, singing "Hide Me Rock of Ages," the Chuck Wagon Gang, singing "Lead Me On," and the Homeland Harmony Quartet (has nothing to do with Homeland Security), singing "Lead Me to that Rock." The Rangers' Quartet's "I've Found a Hiding Place," and the Vaughan Sand Mountain Quartet's "I'll Not Deny My Savior." Authentic, pioneering Gospel by some truly amazing groups. Beautiful and fascinating!

Songlist: The Old Gospel Ship, I've Found A Hiding Place, Lead Me To That Rock, Give The World A Smile, Hide Me Rock Of Ages, Somebody Bigger, Lord Lead Me On, Lord Build Me A Cabin n Glory, Swing Down, Chariot, I'll Not Deny My Savior, Where Could I Go , When We Sing Around The Throne Eternal , I want To Be More Like Jesus, Going Home

Various Artists : Sacred Voices - An A Cappella Collection

Review: Bluegrass, a brand of music appreciated for its intricate musicianship and instrumental virtuosity, has always maintained a fresh appeal while staying true to the gospel roots inherent to the genre. Sacred Voices is a gathering of Bluegrass big shots who have put down their instruments and opened their voices, sounding out an integrated variety of Gospel songs and continuing a tradition that started with Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver sing 'Climbing Up The Mountain' and 'That New Jerusalem'. Peter Rowan & The Rowan Brothers sing a haunting 'Lone Pilgrim' while also making an appearance with the Nashville Bluegrass Band on 'Jesus Made the Wine'. 'Father I Stretch My Hand To Thee' and 'Roll Jordan Roll' also feature the Nashville Bluegrass Band. Tim & Mollie O'Brien contribute 'Shut De Do' and Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice 'Talk about Suffering'. New Grass Revival adds a touch of live performance to the mix with 'Walk In Jerusalem' while Robin & Linda Williams & Friends keep the faith with 'He's Coming Again So Soon' and 'Don't You Want To Go To Heaven'. Also featured are 'Vision Of A Golden Crown' by Don Rigsby and a whole cast of vocals, 'My Heavenly Home' by Front Range, and 'Feel Like My Time Ain't Long' by The Country Gentlemen. First published in 1855 is the oldest and most recognizable song 'What A Friend We Have In Jesus', a riveting solo performance given by Doc Watson. Bluegrass and Gospel music are both inspiring and timeless; strip down to the naked voice and the result is something sacred.

Songlist: Climbing Up the Mountain, Father I Stretch My Hand To Thee, Vision Of A Golden Crown, He's Coming Again So Soon, My Heavenly Home, Feel Like My Time Ain't Long, Lone Pilgrim, Shut De Do, Talk About Suffering, Didn't You Want To Go To Heaven, Jesus Made the Wine, Walk In Jerusalem, What A Friend We Have In Jesus, That New Jerusalem, Roll Jordan Roll
