Alexander L'Estrange : Songs of a Rainbow Nation Singing ('umculo') is a huge part of the culture and every day life of many African peoples, none more so that in South Africa. 'Hamba Lulu' is a wedding song with a gentle, comforting rhythm. 'Jesu Ukukhanya' has a call-and-response structure where a simple solo line is followed by a choral answer. A joyful exuberant song with an infectious rhythm, 'Si Njay, Njay, Njay' can also be performed a cappella with some optional percussion for greater effect. 'Weeping' is a South African pop song from the band Bright Blue and uses as its chorus the refrain from the Zulu anthem 'N'kosi Sikeleli Africa' ('God Bless Africa'). Songlist: Freedom Is Coming, Famba Naye, Thuma Mina, Siyahamba ![]() Alexander L'Estrange : More Songs of a Rainbow Nation Four more stunning songs in celebration of cultural diversity in Southern Africa. Pieces include the joyful 'Freedom Is Coming' -- an infectious celebration of hope and freedom from oppression and four other beautifully crafted arrangements by Choral Basics Series editor, Alexander L'Estrange. Songlist: Freedom Is Coming, Famba Naye, Thuma Mina, Siyahamba ![]() Alexander L'Estrange : Oh Shenandoah and Other American Folksongs Oh Shenandoah: This volume is a toe-in-the-water introduction to some of the great and much loved American folksongs. Two individual songs are presented here, Oh Shenandoah and Simple Gifts, along with Low-down on the Hoe-down - a rip-roaring medley of light-hearted line dance tunes. Songlist: Oh Shenandoah, Simple Gifts, Low-down on the Hoe-down ![]() Mollie Stone & Patty Cuyler : Music From the Republic of Georgia Twelve traditional 3-part folk songs from the Republic of Georgia, for mixed, youth and adult choirs. The arrangements are fun to sing and are sure to be a hit, with choirs and audiences alike, time and again. The optional baritone line makes the collection suitable for choirs with a dearth of male voices but equally suitable for boys to sing as their voices change and develop. Songlist: Brown Gal In De Ring, Linstead Market, Ophelia Letter Blow 'Way. ![]() Various Arrangers : Hebrew Songs Cantor Rena Shapiro's take on the Israeli classic "Eili, Eili" is a fantastic a cappella addition to any repertoire. The setting's savvy utilization of just three voices gives it lots of mileage with a beginning choir but provides plenty for an advanced one to work with in terms of expression and nuance. The piece includes sections in both Hebrew and English. The flowing, contrapuntal movement in Cantor Davidson's setting of Psalm 121 ("A song of ascents...") is at once modern and madrigal, and provides options for singing in English, Hebrew, or both. The song S'Vivon depicts the Hanukkah dreydl, a small top with four sides. Each side of the dreydl contains one of the four Hebrew initials of the phrase, "(A) Great Miracle Happened There." Songlist: Eili, Eili, Shir Hama'alot, S'Vivon ![]() Various Arrangers : World Folk Songs This setting of one of America's favorite folksongs "Shenandoah" is a great opportunity for students to perform an a cappella work. As the piece floats along, propelled by a gentle surge of eighth notes symbolizing the "rollin' river," dissonances and melodic shifts lie beneath to challenge your choir. "All For Me Grog" - The rough and tumble life of a sailor and his adventures on the high seas is celebrated in this rousing English sea shanty known from Nova Scotia to Australia. This a cappella setting of a traditional South African praise song "Gabi, Gabi" just bursts with joyful energy. Dynamic contrast, percussion and a wide range of layered vocal textures make this an appealing concert choice. Songlist: Gabi, Gabi, All For Me Grog, Shenandoah ![]() Various Arrangers : Georgian Folk Songs Vol 1 The history of Georgian music is primarily that of folk song. Polyphonic singing has always had its place in Georgian social life. Genres include hunting songs, labor songs, ritual songs, laments, love songs, wedding songs, marching songs, and historical ballads. This unique collection of ten traditional three-part folk songs from the Caucasus Republic of Georgia provides a broad sampling of these genres, from several of Georgia's distinct regions. Songlist: Alilo, Aralo, Ch'ich'e T'ura, Didavoi Nana, Gonja, Kash Kruli, Mival Guriashi, Odoia-naduri, Tskhenosnuri ![]() |

The history of perhaps the most famous Irish folksong Danny Boy (the melody of which is also known as Londonderry Air), is steeped in mystery. It was first published, without a title, in Dublin in 1855 and was apparently collected by a Miss Jane Ross, who claimed to have taken it down from the playing of an itinerant piper. However, although it is often assumed to be an old, traditional tune, its structure and meter do not fit any of the known Irish folksong forms. The words most commonly associated with it for the last hundred years or so, "Danny Boy," were written by an English lawyer who apparently never set foot in Ireland! Faber Choral Singles offer a series of beautifully crafted arrangements in a diversity of musical styles for today's choirs. From Broadway, pop and folk to spirituals, gospel and original works, the Faber Choral Singles series guarantees the perfect repertoire for every occasion.
