An English/American folk standard, this arrangement of 'Aura Lee' is a group feature and begins as a ballad with octave unison, then some traditional harmony continues with ever-increasing reharmonization and works its way into a medium-swing setting with tight, rich harmony. 'Amazing Grace' is a traditional gospel, shuffle arrangement with jazz harmonies is sure to satisfy. The larger the ensemble, the better this one will sound. The 6/8 meter keeps the gospel flow and the harmonic structure will keep the jazz ears awake with its reharmonization. The opening and closing solo melody may be as free as your gospel ear desires. The 'Shenandoa' arrangement is here in a spiced up ballad setting. It begins with a tenor solo with later group entrance featuring diverse, harmonic settings, key changes, soprano solo, short tenor/soprano duet and, at the end of the group harmony, gently fades just like the ol' river. Close harmony chords and arpeggiated textures combine to make for a lush, complex, and moving rendering of, the Irish ballad, Danny Boy. A tenor solo and baritone duet share the melody with the ensemble. The simple folk melody in 'The Water is Wide' is the foundation for this complex choral work. Each verse has its own flavor, ranging from flowing arpeggiated textures to rich close harmonies.

Several variants of the famous English folk ballad "Barb'ry Ellen" are incorporated into this evocative setting for women's voices. First performed by the Varsity Women's Choir of Appleton North High School, James Heiks, conductor. OK, it's a funny name for a 3-man, 1-woman Bluegrass Gospel quartet, formed by 4 BYU students in 2003, but once we've heard these yummy harmonies and spirited tunes, we aren't likely to forget the name! From the color pictures scattered in the liner notes we see that these four are having a good time performing and spreading their ministry, dressing in blue jeans, non-matching shirts and t-shirts, and even in hillbilly hats and beards. The 15 songs, however, are as simple and powerful as any a cappella Bluegrass or Gospel we have ever heard. "Reaping in the Spirit," "Brethren, We Have Met to Worship," the title tune, "Death Shall Not Destroy My Comfort," the wonderful "Angel Band," "Jesus' Love is like a River," "Abide with Me," the traditional Christmas tunes "What Child is This," "Silent Night," the spiritual "Christmas Train," with lyrics by the group, and the traditional "We'll Soone Be Done" are Gospel favorites. Secular tunes like "Danny Boy," with guest artist Kristine Perry, "You are my Sunshine" and "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow" from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" are also excellent. Blue Cheese is strong, tasty stuff that takes us back to the beginnings of country music, that makes us want to tap our feet and sing along!

The BYU Men's Chorus' first two excellent releases, "Awake My Soul" and "Shout with Glory" whetted our appetite, and that of many fans, for their 3rd. The young men of Cantus, an eleven-member ensemble from St. Olaf College, perform choral literature ranging from polyphony and chant to art songs and spirituals. Therefore the Latin "O Sacrum Convivium" (De Victoria) and Tallis' "If Ye Love Me" reside along a 20th century Gustafsson-composed "Kyrie" and "Gloria," the dissonant intervals heralding the epoch of modernism. "Nachtliches Standchen," a romantic lied, a form of which Schubert was master, is included, as is Finzi's "Thou Didst Delight My Eyes." "Shenandoah" and "Danny Boy" are quietly lambent; the acoustics of the church in Minnesota, where this CD was recorded, a perfect setting.

Cantus is a professional, 12-male vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to exalting the human spirit through the performance of innovative and engaging musical programs. Concordia Choir : Beauty in the World   

Conductor Rene Clausen is very well known to us for the work he has done with Moorhead MN's Concordia Choir, as Artistic Director of the Emmy-winning Concordia Christmas Concerts, and for over 100 of his own compositions for choirs at all levels. "Beauty in the World" features 13 songs, from the powerful Swahili folk tune "Wana Baraka," Ysaye M. Eclipse 6 : Once   

Eclipse is an ensemble of six who met in northern Utah while attending Utah State University. They have performed extensively with the USU Department of Programs and Entertainment. This is their first recording and features original songs by all the members of the band along with a smattering of cleverly arranged covers. The original songs tend to be love songs and might be categorized as sweet-rock. They cover Sting's "King of Pain" with some marvelous vocal embellishments and "Africa" (not again, you think to yourself...but wait!) with a scat falsetto break making it the newest arrangement in a long while. "Danny Boy" is sung as a beautiful multi-part harmony and showcases just what fine voices these singers have, and "Zoot Suit Riot" is a full on jazz arrangement. This is a great first recording of a group worthy of close attention.

Eclipse 6 : For Show   

We have been fans of the 6 young men of Logan, UT-based Eclipse since we first saw them at the Harmony Sweeps Finals in 2001 and 2002, regional winners from Denver. Their fine CDs "Once," "Think Twice" and "Three Kings" only increased our admiration. Some CARA and "Best of State" awards later, we have the live CD "For Show" in our hands, and can only relate to it as Eclipse's "breakthough to the bigtime" CD. Always very strong vocal percussionists and strong performers in concert, the boys have all their a cappella ducks in a row on "For Show," and the audience, as you will hear, is simply going nuts! With a combined 80+ years singing, Four Bettys has paid their dues bigtime. In 2004 they placed 7th in the world at the Sweet Adelines International Competition in Indianapolis, and, like cream, rose steadily to the top: 3rd Place in 2005, 2nd Place in 2006 and not surprisingly, at the 2007 Calgary Convention they were named 2008 Queens of Harmony! "Betty or Not, Here We Come" is a "Best of" collection, so it's hard to pick favorites among these 13 cuts. The Motown standard "Get Ready," the traditional favorite "Danny Boy," the sweet, nostalgic "Pooh Corner," the a cappella chestnut "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," the pop hits "Here's That Rainy Day," "So Much in Love" and "Don't Rain on My Parade;" and Barbershop winners "I Told Them all about You/You Dear Medley" and "I Love You Truly;" and the Spiritual medley "Amazing Grace/My Chains are Gone." The 60-voice Harvard Glee Club, Harvard's internationally renowned men's chorus, is the oldest college chorus in America, founded by students in 1858 to sing college songs and glees. It took until 1912, under the dynamic direction of Dr. Archibald T. Davison, that the Glee Club developed a repertoire of distinction and gained a national reputation. Drawing its repertoire from six centuries, the Glee Club has proved itself particularly expert in the performance of contemporary American music, sacred repertory of the Renaissance, Eastern European music and Folk songs of the world. Under the direction of Jameson Marvin since 1978, the HGC has enhanced its reputation as one of America premier collegiate choruses. "Long Way From Home" is a rich collection of 27 tunes, many of them, like "The Minstrel Boy," "Danny Boy," "Skye Boat Song," "K'ang Ting Love Song" and "Barb'ra Allen," beautifully arranged by conductor Marvin, and several others, like "The Foggy Dew," "Glorious Apollo" and "Sacramento," arranged by Archibald Davison. Other favorites are Franz Schubert's "Widerspruch" and "La Pastorella, the Georgian Folk song "Voi Di Vo," the traditional song "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child," "Lowlands" (arranged by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw; and several written by Harvard men, Richmond K. Fletcher's "Yo Ho" and "The Grid Iron King & Soldiers Field," R.G. Williams' "Up the Street" and "Harvardiana," Murray Taylor's "Ten Thousand Men of Harvard" and "Fair Harvard," a traditional Irish Air based on a poem by Samuel Gilman, 1811.Every cut here has the wonderful beauty and gravitas we've come to expect and enjoy from this venerable, powerful men's chorus!

Speaking of really funny, top-drawer Barbershop show quartets, '06 Harmony Sweeps National Champion and Audience Favorite Hi-Fidelity are one of our personal favorites. Having cracked us up and broken our hearts with their perfectly costumed Adams Family set at the Sweeps, they have Reached for the Stars in their new show, and grabbed them! 16 tunes, the first half being more standard Barbershop fare such as "Make 'Em Laugh," "Best Seat In The House," the live, hilarious, chord-cracking "Bright Was The Night Parody," the live, loaded-with-BHS-in-jokes "Second Place Parody," "I Don't Know Medley," the exquisite "Danny Boy," the side-splitting "(Everyone's Kissing My) Fanny," "Heart Of A Clown," and "Unforgettable" (with guest Sweet Adelines quartet SparX) The second half tunes are the true icing on the cake. The first 3 are from HF's live set from the '07 Denver BHS, performed in perfect Trekkie costumes and personas, "Enterprise/Sulu Medley," "Star Trek Dialog" and "Star Trek Girls Medley" (this stuff is as funny as any Barbershop sketch comedy we've heard!). The related, but not live, "Come Fly With Me/Fly Me to the Moon Medley," "Wish Upon a Star/Impossible Dream Medley," "Lost In The Stars" and "Goodbye" finish the album very nicely. Funny, touching, beautiful stuff from one of the best quartets in the business!

As the 1976 SPEBSQSA International Champions, The Innsiders climaxed a storied career which included several top 10 finishes in the competition. This quartet's love of singing and their steadfast devotion to their art along with a strong work ethic and lots of talent took them to greatness. This compilation of their master works has been released under the watchful eyes of former member Brian Beck, so you are sure to hear the best that The Innsiders had to offer. Some of our favorite songs include "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Ghost Riders In The Sky," and "Till We Meet Again." Twenty-five tracks.
