You Took Advantage of Me

Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Lorenz Hart

From the musical Present Arms, where it was introduced by Joyce Barbour and Busby Berkeley as the characters Edna Stevens and Douglas Atwell. The characters were formerly married, but still have romantic feelings for each other. On opening night, Berkeley forgot the lyrics and had to scat and hum the entire second verse. Berkeley also claimed that his nonsense lyrics for the improvised second verse left Hart "almost apoplectic", but the audience was amused and Hart later forgave him. The song was subsequently included in the 1930 film Leathernecking, an adaptation of Present Arms.

Rodgers described the song as a "sassy and unregretful number" which audiences liked far more than traditional contemporary love songs. In his book The Poets of Tin Pan Alley, Philip Furia wrote that the song depicted a "...wittily self deprecating character who was perfectly suited to lyrics that were at once intricately rhymed yet casually conversational."

Richard Rodgers : The Songs of Richard Rodgers - High Voice

The most accomplished composer in the history of the American musical theatre was Richard Rodgers (1902-1979), with a professional career on Broadway that spanned more than 50 years. In an edition designed especially for singers, 45 songs have been carefully chosen from both the Rodgers & Hart and Rodgers & Hammerstein output. The accompaniments support the singer, rather than containing the melody in the piano part throughout, as in the standard sheet music editions of these songs. Most of these songs are transposed for the first time ever in this new collection. The song selection is almost the same for High Voice and Low Voice; (Soliloquy from Carousel only appears in in Low Voice, and My Lord and Master from The King and I only appears in in High Voice).

Songlist: Manhattan, No Other Love, Bewitched, Some Enchanted Evening, Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?, Edelweiss, Falling In Love With Love, Hello, Young Lovers, I Could Write A Book, I Didn't Know What Time It Was, I Have Dreamed, I Wish I Were In Love Again, If I Loved You, Isn't It Romantic?, It Might As Well Be Spring, It Never Entered My Mind, The Lady is a Tramp, Love, Look Away, My Favorite Things, My Funny Valentine, My Heart Stood Still, My Lord And Master, My Romance, Nobody's Heart, Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin', People Will Say We're In Love, Something Wonderful, The Sound Of Music, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, and more

Hi-Lo's : Clap Yo' Hands : 1 CD : 5184

Hi-Lo's : Clap Yo' Hands    Out of Print

Comprising two of their records from the 1950's-1954's "I Presume" and 1958's "In Stereo"-"Clap Yo' Hands" captures the close harmony sound of the Hi-Lo's, who defined the vocal jazz of their era. The playground for the talents of the brilliant arranger Gene Puerling, who went on to form the Singers Unlimited, the Hi-Lo's toured with theJudy Garland show and sang with legends such as Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. These tracks are orchestrated (by Frank Comstock, who backed the group on many early recordings) and include wonderful standards such as "Summertime," "Long Ago and Far Away," "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." This is a jubilant recording that is alive with the joy of music. We have it on good authority that "Clap Yo' Hands" includes some of the group's favorite songs.

Songlist: Clap Yo' Hands, Long Ave and Far Away, You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby, Shadow Waltz, Chinatown, My Chinatown, Too Young for the Blues, Summertime, You Took Advantage of Me, Birth of the Blues, Surrey With the Fringe on Top, Put Your Dreams Away, Button Up Your Overcoat, Speak Low, Jeepers Creepers, I Thought About You, Nice Work if You Can Get It, Stars Fell on Alabama, Rockin' Chair

MatriX : MatriX : 1 CD

MatriX : MatriX    Out of Print

Since their formation in 2001, combining 3 gold medal-winning veterans, Paul, Dale and Mark, with newcomer bass Brian O'Dell, MatriX began their steady climb up the elite Barbershop Quartet ladder with a 19th place finish at the 2002 convention. 2003 saw the group add another newcomer, lead Jeff Wallace, who led MatriX to a 12th place finish at the Montreal convention, and in the 2006 Indianapolis competition broke into the top 10, placing 9th. Their new self-titled release really shows off the talents of this fast-rising group. 12 songs, beginning with the powerful "I'm Gonna Live Till I Die," "Look Me Up When You're in Dixie," the heart-tugging standards "Georgia On My Mind," "If You Had All The World And Its Gold," "Distant Melody," and Billy Joel's wonderful "Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)." Paul Simon's "59th St. Bridge song (Feelin' Groovy)" has a carefree arrangement, there's a strong live cut from Montreal in 2003, "Black Eyed Susan Brown," the poignant "Garden in the Rain" (which segues into "Over the Rainbow") and the final tune, "Some Lucky Day," are all winners. Great arrangements, ringing harmonies and sheer love of singing add up to a great collection of barbershop and pop from fast-rising MatriX!
