"Wade in the Water" is the name of a spiritual first published in New Jubilee Songs as Sung by the Fisk Jubilee Singers (1901 by John Wesley Work II and his brother, Frederick J. Work. It is associated with the songs of the Underground Railroad. The song relates to both the Old and New Testaments. The verses reflect the Israelites' escape out of Egypt as found in Exodus 14. The chorus refers to healing: see John 5:4, "For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had."
"Wade in the Water" is one of the songs featured in Alvin Ailey's 1960 signature ballet, Revelations.[5] One version of the song performed by The Staple Singers became a part of the civil rights movement in the US. "Wade in the Water" was a popular instrumental hit in 1966 for the Ramsey Lewis Trio, which prompted further instrumental recordings by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and Billy Preston in 1967. The melody was used for the 1988 Tony! Toni! Toné! hit, "Little Walter". The version by Golden Gate Quartet appears on the 2009 compilation album Bad Seeds - Nick Cave: Roots & Collaborations.
Sweet Honey In The Rock perform "Wade in the Water" during sound check at Koerner Hall in Toronto. This performance was shot for an episode of "God's Greatest Hits" on Vision TV.
This a cappella arrangement of the traditional spiritual pulses with rhythmic energy in this setting for mixed voices and baritone soloist. Vivid contrasts, layered vocal phrases and varied textures make this a superb showcase for choirs in church, school and community.

The rhythmic and expressive setting of the well known Spiritual, 'Rockin' Jerusalem' is a tribute to the work of Dale Warland. This arrangement will make an inspiring concert work for a skilled A Cappella choir. Originally, 'Wade in the Water' was a code song of the African-American slave that cautioned slaves to travel by water on their journey to freedom. Powell's arrangement captures the drama with beautiful harmony and powerful dynamics. The light humming of harmonies that start 'Somebody's Knockin' At Yo' Do'' will give you an idea of how exciting this piece could become, and sure enough it doesn't faulter from that expectation once throughout the song, this is a fantastic arrangement! There are 21 classic Spirituals here, the title tune, "Were You There" (sung in concert with the BYU Concert Choir and Men's Chorus), Adolphus Hailstork's "Crucifixion," "By and By," "Ain't Got Time to Die," "See What the End Is Gonna Be" (an original by founder/conductor/arranger Ronald Staheli), Moses Hogan's "I Got a Home in-a dat Rock" "Elijah Rock," Didn't My Lord Daniel Deliver" and "The Battle of Jericho," "Shut de Do'," "Let Me Fly" and "Ain't that News." In 1978, Louis Botto, a graduate student in medieval and Renaissance music, wanted to hear the music he was studying performed live (a rarity at the time), and gathered a group of singers from the SF Symphony Chorus and Grace Cathedral Choir. They chose the name "Chanticleer" from the clear-singing rooster from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales." The early years were difficult, but the group's reputation grew enough by 1991 to make all 12 members full-time employees. There are 19 gems from some of the many Chanticleer CDs that grace our catalog, and it's hard to pick favorites. Those who favor their flawless singing accompanied, we would recommend Ignacio de Jerusalem's "Hymn: Quem Terra Pontus Sidera," "Recessional: Angelicas Milicias" by Manuel de Sumaya, and Mercer & Arlen's "Blues in the Night." For a cappella, we like the Gregorian chant "Ave Maria," Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Alma Redemptoris Mater," Bernard Rands' "This Heart That Flutters Near My Heart," Chen Yi's "Wild Grass," Stephen Foster's "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair" (arr. by Gene Puerling), Michael McGlynn's "Dulaman," "Spanish Carol," "Wade in the Water"--frankly, we could list them all! A well-chosen "best of" of one of our favorite choral groups. Highly recommended! Songlist: Hymn: Quem Tera Pontus Sidera, Ave Maria, Alma Redemptoris Mater, The Angel Cried Out, Recessional: Angelicas Milicias, Wherewithal Shall A Young Man, Love Is A Beautiful Dream, This Heart That Flutters Near My Heart, Wild Grass, Labbra Vermiglie E Belle, Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair, Dulaman, Shenandoah, Spanish Carol, Love Is Letting Go, Blues In the Night, Wade in the Water, We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace, Christmas Time Is Here Chicago A Cappella : Bound For Glory New settings of African-American Spirituals! Specialty Records, founded by Art Rupe in 1946 was one of the first companies to nurture this creative flowering, and it remained at the forefront of the genre. The Pilgrim Travelers, the Soul Stirrers, Sister Wynona Carr, Brother Joe May, Dorothy Love Coates and the Original Gospel Harmonettes, the Original Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Swan Silvertones are a few of the giants of the Golden Age discovered and featured by Art Rupe on Specialty. "Get On Board" has 24 Gospel hits, all accompanied, most of which highlight Dorothy's Rockin' Soul, foot-tapping Revival-style leads, and her Harmonettes sing sweet and solid background harmonies. On stage Dorothy would leap and lunge, a ferociously animated performer and an astonishing lyricist who composed a dozen Gospel standards. A few favorites are "Get Away Jordan," "Rest for the Weary," "Deliver Me," "No Hiding Place" (which was featured in the movie "Ghost'"), "Old Gospel Train," "Plenty Good Room," "Waiting for Me," "I Wouldn't Mind Dying," the title tune and the final cut "That's Enough," but every cut here is an inspiration and a revelation. We look upon Dorothy Love Coates as an early Aretha, who also began her career singing Gospel, and if you love authentic Gospel, Get On Board this one! Songlist: Peace Be Still, Glory to His Name, I'm Sealed, Get Away Jordan, Rest for the Weary, Deliver Me, Oh My Lord, Lead Me, Heavenly Father, Old Gospel Train (The Next Stop Is Mine), Get on Board, The Railroad, Plenty Good Room, Sometime, No Hiding Place, Waiting For Me, Wade in the Water, I Wouldn't Mind Dying, I'll Be With Thee, He's Calling Me, Untitled Instrumental, Thank You Lord For Using Me, These Are They, 99 1/2, That's Enough Fisk Jubilee Singers : In Bright Mansions Fisk University, originally the Fisk Free Colored School, was founded in Nashville, TN right after the Civil War, by northern missionaries. The school treasurer, a Gettysburg veteran named George White, loved music, and was moved by the slave hymns he would sometimes overhear in the refugee camps, but it was difficult to get his young students to sing them, as they were associated with slavery and things best forgotten. George began collecting and arranging these "secret songs," with the help of his secretary, Ella Sheppard, who brought him "O Freedom" and "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," lullabies her mother had taught her. In time, White and Sheppard collected over a hundred songs. In 1871, Fisk was on the brink of financial collapse, and George White took a group of young singers on the route of the Underground Railroad, hoping to "sing into the hearts" of the people and raise money to save the school. At first enduring racism and indifference, the group finally found some success in Ohio, and then made it to New York, where Henry Ward Beecher, in his Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, was so moved by their singing he commanded his wealthy parishioners to give generously to the Jubilee's cause. Suddenly the churches of metropolitan New York opened their doors to them, and people rushed to hear "the genuine soul music of the slave cabins, before the Lord led his people out of the house of bondage." This began a series of successful tours, to Britain, Europe and all over the United States that finally exhausted the young singers, yet raised enough to erase Fisk's debt and build beautiful new campus buildings. 18 authentic songs, some of our favorites: "Down By The Riverside," "De Gospel Train," "Were You There," "Rockin' Jerusalem," "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See," "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands," "I'm Got A Home In-A Dat Rock," and the title tune. The CD cover and liner notes are actually a small book, with great old photos and the amazing story of the Fisk Singers. And, this is an "Enhanced" CD--if you load it into your computer's CD player, you can see a nicely-done visual presentation of the group's history with many photos, as well as photos and info from the recording session--very cool. Recommended. Songlist: I'm Gonna Sing Till the Spirit Moves, Poor Man Lazrus, Down By the Riverside, Lord, I'm Out Here On Your Word, De Gospel Train, Were You There?, Rockin' Jerusalem, Nobody Knows the Trouble I See, I Been in the Storm, Soon-Ah Will Be Done, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, Hold On, There Is A Balm in Gilead, Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord, Wade in the Water, Ride On, Jesus, I'm Got A Home In-A Dat Rock, In Bright Mansions Kantorei : The Road Home - Folk Songs and Spirituals Denver-based 36 mixed-voice semiprofessional choir Kantorei has grown from a group of six friends singing carols in 1997 to a respected group that has appeared at Carnegie Hall for the National ACDA Conference, and been conducted by Rene Clausen in a premiere performance of his work. Esteemed director Richard Larson has been a major factor in the group's rise. "Home" is the group's fifth very good CD, and is a collection of 21 folk songs and spirituals. Picking favorites is not easy, there are excellent solos on "Let Me Fly ," "Dere's No Hidin' Place," "Ezekiel Saw de Wheel " and "City Called Heaven." Folk tunes "Black is the Color," "Danny Boy," and "Wearing of the Green " are wonderful. And we can't forget the four tunes arranged by the late Moses Hogan, "The Battle of Jericho" "You Better Min' How You Talk ," "I Can Tell the World" and "My Soul's Been Anchored." Another winner for Kantorei! Recommended. Songlist: Let Me Fly, Dere's No Hidin' Place, Oh, Shenandoah, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Black is the Color, If I Got My Ticket, My Lord, What a Mornin', The Battle of Jericho, You Better Mi' How You Talk, I Can Tell the World, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, City Called Heaven, I Got Shoes, I Believe This Is Jesus, Danny Boy, Wearing of the Green, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, God Is Seen, Wade in the Water, My Soul's Been Anchored Luther College Nordic Choir : Everlasting God Following in the very large footsteps, and the 57-year tenure of Weston Noble at Decorah, IA's Luther College, Dr. Craig Arnold returned to serve as director of choral activities, conductor of the Nordic Choir, and professor of music at Luther. "Everlasting God" is a spirited collection of 20 songs, which highlight the rich, powerful sound of this great choir. Rene Clausen's "Laudate," two selections from Herbert Howells' "Requiem," the wonderful 6-part "Liebeslieder Walzer, op. 52" by Brahms, the Stephen Paulus-arranged traditional hymn, "We Gather Together," the 2-part "The Lord is the Everlasting God" by Kenneth Jennings, Ola Gjeilo's haunting "Ubi Caritas," the heart-tugging "Danny Boy" and the spiritual "Wade in the Water" are favorites. Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914-2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha), Pervis, Yvonne, and Mavis. The family began appearing in Chicago-area churches in 1948, and signed their first professional contract in 1952. During their early career they recorded in an acoustic gospel-folk style with various labels: United Records, Vee-Jay Records, Riverside Records, and then Epic Records in 1965. While the family surname is "Staples", the group used the singular form for its name, resulting in the group's name being "The Staple Singers". This is their 1965 release on Columbia Records now available at a budget price. Most tracks are accompanied. Songlist: Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Move Along Train, Are You Sure, Wade In The Water, If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again, Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!, The Lord's Prayer, Jacob's Ladder, Why? (Am I Treated So Bad), Praying Time, For What It's Worth, Hammer And Nails, Freedom Highway, What You Gonna Do?, Samson And Delilah, Nobody's Fault But Mine, Be Careful Of Stones That You Throw, This Train Sweet Honey In The Rock : Selections 1976-88 In the spring of 1975 Sweet Honey was performing at a folk festival in Chicago when they were approached by a man who asked if they wanted to make a record. They did. A year later Bruce Kaplan of Flying Fish Records did indeed release the first Sweet Honey record. For a dozen years and eight records Flying Fish recorded and produced the music of Sweet Honey In The Rock. Bruce died in 1992. This set is dedicated to his memory and legacy. Bernice Johnson Reagon compiled and produced a two disc collection from the Flying Fish years. Seventeen tracks on each of the discs and a fine historical booklet make this the item to obtain if you don't have those eight albums and wish a definitive overview of those years which now are being considered 'the early years.' Songlist: Disc 1, Ella's Song, Wade In The Water, Denko, On Children, Echo, Joan Little, Beatitudes, Peace, Sitting On Top Of The World, More Than A Paycheck, Crying For Freedom In South Africa, They Are All Falling Around Me, Mae Frances, I'm Gon' Stand!!!, Feel Something Drawing Me On, In The Upper Room, Seven Principles, Disc 2, Testimony, Oughta Be A Woman, Fannie Lou Hamer, Meyango, Run Mourner Run, As Long As I Have Breath In My Body, No Images, Sometime, The Gift Of Love, Biko, My Way, and more Take 6 : Beautiful World Its a beautiful world according to Take 6 and a beautiful body of work for their fans across the board. The 10th offering from the sextet is simply called 'Beautiful World'. Although accompanied by instruments played by the six members themselves, the vocal arrangement shine through like the earlier material that originally gave the group their offical stamp in a cappella. Unlike their last studio CD 'So Cool' which was all original material, this entire project is comprised of Pop, R&B, and gospel standards. 'Wade in the Water' and 'Peace in the Valley' are gospel gems reminiscent of 'Get Away Jordan' and 'Mary dont you Weep'. 'People Get Ready' (Curtis Mayfield) with soaring heights and winding riffs takes you for a whole new ride. 'Lovely Day' (Bill Withers) and 'Loves in Need' (Stevie Wonder) are instantly recognizable, but revamped rethoughtand rearranged in a way that only Take 6 can do. Our favorite is the thought provoking 'Fragile' (Sting) where the haunting melody is kept over lush and thick harmonies you expect to hear from Take 6. Dont be surprised if the 13 new songs from 'Beautiful World' make you a fan all over again. Songlist: Takin' It To The Street, People Get Ready, Grandma's Hands, Love's In Need Of Love Today, Beautiful World, Don't Give Up, Wade in The Water, Someday We'll All Be Free, Everlasting, Fragile, Peace In The Valley, Street Jam, Lovely Day Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 2007 On a perfect May Saturday night in San Rafael, CA, the sold-out audience witnessed another unbelievable evening of unaccompanied vocal harmony singing. And let us not forget host group 2006 Champions Hi-Fidelity (hey, that's 2 in a row for L.A.!), whose "Enterprise/Sulu Medley" reminds us how brilliant and funny they can be. Songlist: O Fortuna, Bring Me Little Water, Silvie, Steal My Kisses, Rock Around The Clock, Sugarcane Jubilee, Don't Worry 'Bout A Thing, Wade in the Water, Szerelem, Home, Some Kind of Wonderful, Run Around, Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident), Defying Gravity, Stand in that River, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Enterprise / Sulu Medley, Kappee, Always Look on the Bright Side of Life Voena : A Cappella World VOENA is a children's choir unique to the United States: children as young as six and as old as 18, multicultural in their backgrounds, living and growing up in America, blending their most natural birth given voices." Settle was the originator of the Wings over Jordan Choir (WOJC), which on the public scene in the late 1930s, the first full-time professional black choir in America. Proficient and versatile, during the period 1938 to 1949, the choir performed before sold-out, non-segregated audiences in over 40 American states, 5 European countries, Canada and Mexico. In 1937 the choir inaugurated a successful weekly "Negro Hour" on CBS Radio in Cleveland, reaching 40 million listeners. WOJC's segment of spirituals would be followed by the Southernaires Quartet, and then the Golden Gate Quartet. A songbook was published and over 50 recordings came from this program, performances with major symphonic orchestras and an invitation to sing at the White House. Reverend Settle narrates in this rare collection, saying things like "It's not because I'm a coward and afraid to defend myself that I smilingly take the many abuses forced upon me through life. The fact is, I pity and pray for those who despitefully mistreat me. You may wonder about my attitude. Well, the answer is very simple. I am busy trying to get ready to try on my long white robe." Gospel Friend records is releasing this wonderful collection of 25 authentic spirituals, accompanied by fascinating pictures and text in the liner notes (one of our favorites is several members of the group all dressed up in front of their spanking-new tour bus, "Wings Over Jordan" proudly on the front). There are several spirituals we are hearing for the first time, such as "The Old Ark's A-Movering," "My Lord's Gonna Move This Wicked Race," the joyous "I Just Got Over," "Meet You at the Judgement," "Trampin'," "Over My Head" and others. And then there are tunes we've heard many times, such as "Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham," "Ezekiel Saw the Wheel," "Wade in the Water," "Old Ship of Zion" and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy," but it's as if we are hearing them for the first time. The classic arrangement returns in a new SAB voicing! This work opens with a choral fanfare-like section and progresses through several swinging sections to a climactic finish. This is Mark Hayes at his very best. Many opportunities for brief solos. And the optional instrumental accompaniment (or SoundTrax CD) is outstanding.

Wade in the Water is a lively and infectious spiritual. Its features include a call-and-response texture, jazz "scat" vocalization and finger clicks on beats 2 and 4 of the measure. This arrangement remains true to the spirit of Eva Cassidy's well-loved version, adapting the instrumental improvisation on the recording to create a fun scat section. Listen to Eva Cassidy's version and aim for the same passion and commitment, allowing the voices as much freedom of expression as is possible in a choral texture. Faber Choral Singles offer a series of beautifully crafted arrangements in a diversity of musical styles for today's choirs. From Broadway, pop and folk to spirituals, gospel and original works, the Faber Choral Singles series guarantees the perfect repertoire for every occasion.
