Tuxedo Junction

Music by William Johnson and Erskine Hawkins and Julian Dash

Originally Performed by Glenn Miller

"Tuxedo Junction" is a popular song written by Erskine Hawkins, Bill Johnson, Julian Dash, and Buddy Feyne. The instrumental was a No. 1 hit for Glenn Miller and his Orchestra in 1940.

In the late 1930s Hawkins and his Orchestra were one of the house bands at the Savoy Ballroom. They alternated with the Chick Webb band, and often used "Tuxedo Junction" as their sign-off song before the next band would take the stage, so that the dancing would continue uninterrupted.

4-Star Collection : Never Stop Dreaming : 1 CD

4-Star Collection : Never Stop Dreaming

Officially, 4 Star Collection registered their quartethood with Sweet Adelines International in 1987. In 1988 and again in 1989 they won their regional competitions. Since then they were 10th in the Internationals in 1989, 5th in '90, 8th in '91, 2nd in '92, 5th in '93, 3rd in '94, 2nd in '95 and in l996 swept the field of 47 other quartets to become the 1997 Queens Of Harmony. Their winning performance that magic evening was "(When It's) Darkness On The Delta," "I'd Give The World To Hear Alexander's Band Again," "Here I Am, Broken Hearted" and, just for yucks, Weird Al's parody of "La Bamba" entitled "Lasagna." As their chords rang out into the hall holding 7,000 enthusiasts, the judges awarded the maximum number of discretionary bonus points possible. Now you can enjoy the same winning perfection that swept the judges and audience that evening.

Songlist: Darktown Strutter's Ball, I'm Dancing This Dance In the Wrong Romance, Tuxedo Junction, Here Am I, Broken-Hearted, (When It's) Darkness On the Delta, Lasagna, When I Look In Your Eyes, I'd Give the World To Hear Alexander's Band Again, Pal of My Cradle Days, Oh, You Beautiful Doll, The Impossible Dream

The Andrews Sisters : The Golden Age - Box Set : 3 CDs : 74

The Andrews Sisters : The Golden Age - Box Set

The three beautiful, talented Andrews Sisters had the sound, look and attitude that defined the Swing Era, in our minds one of the most entertaining and creative periods in American music. Jasmine Records obviously agreed with us, and set out to put together a comprehensive collection of every song the prolific Sisters ever recorded, an amazing 101 tunes on 4, (yes, 4!) CDs. The first two contain all the American charts hits, and the other two contain many rarely heard songs which have never been reissued on CD. 13 tunes sung with Bing Crosby, like "Yodelin' Jive," "Victory Polka," "Don't Fence Me In," "The Three Caballeros" and "South America Take It Away;" 3 with Danny Kaye, like "Civilisation-Bongo, Bongo, Bongo" and "Put 'Em in a Box, Tie 'Em with a Ribbon;" "Yipsee-I-O" with Carmen Miranda, 4 with Dick Haymes, and others like Dan Dailey and Red Foley. We found the previously unreleased stuff like "A Zoot Suit (for my Sunday Gal)" and "The Mambo Man" particularly wonderful and fascinating. A gorgeous, generous, monumental, always entertaining collection! A must for every collector and a great gift for any fan of this legendary group whose music is still popular, for good reason, all these years later.

The Manhattan Transfer : Manhattan Transfer    Out of Print

The debut album recorded in 1975. Contains "Operator," the first Transfer song to garner the public's attention. It's an impressive opening gambit, and is still consistent with their style-be it on "Candy," "Tuxedo Junction" or "Java Jive." "You Can Depend On Me" is a fast sprint, "Blue Champagne" an elegant toast to the era of the speakeasy. "Occapella" is a bluesy uptempo tune that sounds a bit like early Bonnie Raitt. Also, an early version of "Heart's Desire," (later re-recorded on "Bop Doo Wopp." ) All songs are accompanied, with particular depth in the horn/reed sections.

Songlist: Tuxedo Junction, Sweet Talking Guy, Operator, 'Candy, Gloria, Clap Yo' Hands, That Cat Is High, You Can Depend On Me, Blue Champagne, Java Jive, Occapella, Heart's Desire

The Manhattan Transfer : Very Best Of

Few groups have a more distinguished pedigree than the Transfer. Since their formation in New York in 1972, these four voices (two male, two female) have notched up numerous gold and platinum albums, and accumulated a shelf full of Grammy's. Their performance of "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" (included here) won a Grammy for its Gene Puerling arrangement. With collaborators Jon Hendricks and Richie Cole, they promulgated the use of the vocalese technique-singing lyrics over jazz solos. They had their biggest hit of their career, with "Boy From New York City," in 1981, when it went to number seven. "Route 66" and "Tuxedo Junction" were made famous by Nat King Cole and Glenn Miller respectively ("Route 66" won the group yet another Grammy in 1983). "Birdland" was originally recorded by Weather Report; with the addition of Jon Hendricks' lyrics, a Transfer classic was born. This is required listening for vocal jazz fans.

Songlist: Boy From New York City, Trickle Trickle, Gloria, Operator, Tuxedo Junction, Four Brothers, Ray's Rockhouse, Soul Food To Go (Sina), Spice Of Life, Baby Come Back To Me(The Morse Code Of Love), Candy, A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, Birdland, Java Jive, Route 66, Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone

New Tradition Chorus : Sentimental Journey : 1 CD : Jay Giallombardo

New Tradition Chorus : Sentimental Journey

Northbrook, IL's 95-strong NTC, founded in 1982 as a performance and competition chorus and the intention of becoming one of the best men's choruses in the world, reached that goal in 2001, when, after 8 years of second place medals, they won the coveted gold. Director and arranger Jay Giallombardo, who was a charter member of the group and a member of SPEBSQSA since 1968, has made his devotion to musical quality a guiding light for New Tradition since its inception. That smooth, powerful quality is clear on all of "Sentimental's" 13 classic cuts: "Big Band Days," "Tuxedo Junction," "Taking a Chance on Love," "Skylark," "Everything Old Is New Again," "Do Nothin' 'Till You Hear from Me," "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby," "Java Jive," a stunning "The White Cliffs of Dover" (recorded live at the 2001 SPEBSQSA Chorus Finals), a marvelous "Gershwin Medley," "Imagination," the lovely title tune, and a live bonus track, "dedicated to the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001." "Sentimental" is a nostalgic treat from start to finish by one of the best choruses on the planet.

New Tradition Quartet : Sgt. Pepler's Homely Tarts Pub Band

If you're not comfortable laughing out loud, maybe you should pass this one by. I guess you could always shut your ears during the gags and just listen to these 1985 International Champions sing. You see, they're entertainers. The award winning singing is the basis of the act but the goal of these four is to bring joy and laughter into the world. Along the way to this goal they become the Marx Brothers and their gags are just as goofy as the originals. Spoofing the members of Star Trek will bring delight to Trekkies and Anti-Trakkies alike. It is a double CD release. The first disc is a reissue of their two albums. The second is a series of surprises from live performances. Though it sounds as though it was recorded from the audience, a piece simply called "Trombones" features all the members on vocal trombone and is wonderful in spite of the fidelity. As we love both laughter and song, this gets our enthusiastic recomendation!

Songlist: Gentlemen, Hello!, The Marx Brothers Opener, Carnival Barker(intro), Lydia (The Tattooed Lady), Jeepers Creepers, Tuxedo Junction, I Want You To Be My Sweetheart, I Used To Call Her Baby, Air Medley, Anti-Marriage Medley, Having To Say Goodbye (intro), So Long Mother, World War One Medley, Once In A While, Smile, Parade Medley, I'm So Alone With A Crowd, Trickle Trickle, It Was Almost Like A Song, Hallelujah, Barbershop!, Showbiz Medley, That Charlie Chaplin Walk, If I Had The Heart Of A Clown, When I'm Sixty-Four, Clown Medley

Tuxedo Junction : Tuxedo Junction    Out of Print

Even if you don't give a fig about barbershop, you'll find yourself appreciating the warm and heartfelt performance of this foursome from Austin, Texas. Yes, it's four part harmony in the barbershop style, for certain, but their tastes are as sprawling as the great state they call home. Standards are the majority, with special kudos for a standout arrangement of "When I Fall In Love"; the luscious harmonic motion of the coda is pure honey. Other pleasures are "Peg O' My Heart," "It Had To Be You" and their namesake, "Tuxedo Junction," as well as the doo wop favorite, "Silhouettes," Larry Gatlin's "Alleluia," the Beach Boys' "In My Room" and our nomination for the most sylvan of melodies, "Lullaby."

Songlist: Tuxedo Junction, Java Jive, It Had To Be You, When I Fall In Love, Jeepers Creepers / Them There Eyes Medley, I Can Dream, Can't I?, Peg O' My Heart, Birth Of The Blues, Midnight Blues, Lida Rose / will I Ever Tell You?, In My Room, Silhouettes, Alleluia, Lullaby

"Caravan," "Tuxedo Junction," " Java Jive" and "Stormy Weather" are included, but it's equally a treat to hear "That's My Weakness Now," (The Rhythm Boys, who had Bing Crosby as a member) or the silly humor of "The Girl In the Little Green Hat." All tracks are accompanied.
