Cracker Jills : Cracker Jills : 1 CD

Cracker Jills : Cracker Jills

The Cracker Jills were superstars! There, we've said it. There have been a few others in the Sweet Adelines of similar stature but since they won the Sweet Adeline International Championship in 1957 (now the winners are called Queens of Harmony) and went on to sing together for another twenty years they have been considered the most influential group in defining the world of women in barbershop singing. Most prominent in this influence is their arranger and lead singer, Renee Craig whose name you will see in the arranger's credits on almost every Sweet Adeline album. She has also been the director of the Ramapo Valley Sweet Adeline Chorus which won four Championships and now is the director of the Westchester Chordsmen. But, you ask, how about the music? Here are historic recordings of 26 of the best tunes you'll ever hear!

Songlist: Narration, This Could Be the Start of Something Big, That Tumbled Down Shack in Athlone, Baby, Oh Where Can You Be, The Masquerade Is Over, You Can't Take Dixie From Me, Lover, Come Back to Me, My Honey's Lovin' Arms, That Lonesome Road, The Trolley Song, Scarlet Ribbons, Royal Garden Blues, When You Wish Upon a Star, Judy at the Palace, South, In San Francisco, I Stayed Too Long at the Fair, Where the Black-Eyed Susans Grow, Till There Was You, My Coloring Book, I'll Never Say 'Never Again' Again, Goodbye, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Kerry Dance, Floatin' Down to Cotton Town, I'll Be Seeing You

Hi-Lo's : This Time It's Love : 1 CD : 7552

Hi-Lo's : This Time It's Love

I really don't have to go into who the Hi-Lo's were, or how their sound defined jazz and pop singing from the 1950s on, do I? Good! This CD starts with an lp, originally released on Columbia Records in 1962, "This Time It's Love," of 12 (accompanied by an Orchestra conducted by Clare Fischer) love songs, and then goes on to add 14 bonus tracks, including 3 previously unreleased tracks--a generous helping of classic Hi-Lo's. The title tune, "More Than You Know," "The Second Time Around," "Besame Mucho," "Only Forever," "There's a Small Hotel"--these songs by the Hi-Lo's are listed in the dictionary under "romantic." Why? Because we can understand every word, and, dammit, we believe every word they're singing! The previously unreleased tracks are "The Ever-Changing Plains," "Nobody's Heart" and "Camelot." One song, the lovely "Star Carol" is a cappella. Tremendous value, great music!

Songlist: My Foolish Heart, More Than You Know, The Second Time Around, Besame Mucho, Only Forever, Let Me Love You, Catch A Falling Star, There's A Small Hotel, The Very Thought of You, Tangerine, On the Alamo, Paradise, Autumn Rain, The Ever Changing Plains, A Face in the Crowd, A Very Special Love, Pamela Throws A Party?, When I Remember, Whistlin' Down the Lane, The Star Carol, Nobody's Heart, A Lot of Livin' To Do, Cindy's Prayer, Camelot, The Trolley Song, Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue

Pied Pipers : Dreams From The Sunny Side of the Street : 2 CDs : 412

Pied Pipers : Dreams From The Sunny Side of the Street

In the 1940s, in comparison to the rest of the world, Americans had it all-nylons, chewing gum and harmony groups like the Merry Macs, Modernaires and the Pied Pipers. Originally an octet when first hired by Tommy Dorsey, they were fired when his sponsors disapproved of "Hold Tight-Want Some Sea Food Mama" as unsuitable broadcast material (this is the first we've ever heard of this-possibly it had a hidden sexual connotation?). In any case, they reduced to a quartet and were on the verge of disbanding when they were hired back by Dorsey to join his new solo vocalist Frank Sinatra. With Sinatra the Pipers recorded quite a few hits including "I'll Never Smile Again," which was the very first #1 record on Billboard's Best Selling record chart, which began in 1940. The group's Jo Stafford also had solo hits, including "Yes Indeed." After an argument with Dorsey the group left for Hollywood and signed to newly-formed Capital Records. "Deacon Jones/Pistol Packin' Mama" was the first of a string of hits on their own and with Johnny Mercer and other solo artists, including "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate The Positive," "Personality," "Winter Wonderland," "The Trolley Song," "In The Moon Mist," "My Happiness" and "Dream." All songs are Swing-band accompanied. This is one of those 2-CD, 50-song collections we love so well because they are such a bargain and have so much great music. The Pipers were one of the most popular harmony groups of the Swing Era, and this is their "greatest hits" collection. What a treat from one of our favorite eras in American music!

Songlist: Pistol Packin' Mama, Doin' What Comes Natur'lly, Dream, In The Middle Of May, Girl of My Dreams, Cecilia, Watcha Know Joe?, You've Got Me This Way, What A Deal, There's Good Blues Tonight, Mairzy Doats, My Happiness, My! My!, The Freedom Train, Sweet Potatoe Piper, Old Man River, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Nine Old Men, You And Your Love, You Won't Be Satisfied, I Love It So, I've Got the Sun In the Morning, It's Only A Paper Moon, Linger In My Arms, I'll Buy That Dream, Easy Street, Gotta Be This Or That, Jamboree Jones, Isn't That Just Like Love, Embraceable You, and more

Sweet Adelines : Sweet Adelines Best : 1 CD

Sweet Adelines : Sweet Adelines Best

The women of Sweet Adelines, like their male counterparts, represent the most jubilant, and essentially American, style of harmony singing of the 20th century. This best-of compilation is a long-overdue salute to the stars (and spangles!) of SAI and its spirited membership. Featuring both the rousing and upbeat - High Society's "Thank You World," Showtime's "Ya Gotta Know/I Can't Give You Anything But Love," Classic Edition's "Hit Me With A Hot Note" and the brand new Signature Sound track, "Mama's Gone Goodbye Medley," - as well as the exquisite ache of Ambiance's "Bundle of Old Love Letters," Panache's "Someone Like You" and Swing Street's "All Of My Life," this collection of studio cuts is the first of its kind. We think your ears will agree that it's also the finest!

Songlist: Thank You World, Ya Gotta Know / I Can't Give You Anything But Love, I Only Have Eyes For You, All Of My Life, If I Had A Voice, I'm Dancing This Dance In The Wrong Romance, Someone Like You, Mama's Gone Goodbye Medley, Help I'm Turning Into My Parents, Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now, Hit Me With A Hot Note, Bundle Of Old Love Letters, I Wish I Had My Old Pal Back Again, Moondance, The Trolley Song, Sentimental Journey
