Sweet Georgia Brown

Music by Ben Bernie

Reportedly Ben Bernie came up with the concept for the song's lyrics – although he is not the accredited lyricist – after meeting Dr. George Thaddeus Brown in New York City: Dr. Brown, a longtime member of the State House of Representatives for Georgia, told Bernie about Dr. Brown's daughter Georgia Brown and how subsequent to the baby girl's birth on August 11, 1911 the Georgia General Assembly had issued a declaration that she was to be named Georgia after the state, an anecdote which would be directly referenced by the song's lyric: "Georgia claimed her – Georgia named her." The tune was first recorded on March 19, 1925, by bandleader Ben Bernie, resulting in a five-week number one for Ben Bernie and his Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra. One of the most popular versions of "Sweet Georgia Brown" was recorded in 1949 by Brother Bones and His Shadows and later adopted as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team in 1952.

Keepsake : Once Upon A Time : 1 CD

Keepsake : Once Upon A Time

The redoubtable Keepsake have consistently impressed with their musical fluency and extensive barbershop vocabulary. The richness of the voices melting into and enveloping the notes, shaping them into the perfect creamy consistency-the satisfaction of a fully-realized barbershop chord! "Once Upon A Time" includes many classic tunes such as "Roses of Picardy," "Sweet Georgia Brown," and a dynamite "Ring Out the Bells in Dixieland," making it their most traditional recording to our ears. However, the melody of "Easy Street," with it's flatted non-diatonic "blue" notes, (heralding the fusion of jazz and blues that would become doo-wop) is fresh, and along with "Chances Are" and "I Only Have Eyes For You," gives an added dimension that is of equal enjoyment.

Songlist: There's A New Gang On The Corner, I'll Be A Song And Dance Man Again, Rain (Medley), Is This Just Another Song About Love, Chances Are, Last Night On The Back Porch, I Loved Her Best Of All, Moonlight Brings Memories, Easy Street, Ring Out The Bells In Dixieland, Roses Of Picardy, Sweet Georgia Brown, I Only Have Eyes For You, How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life/ It's A Sin To Tell A Lie (Medley), Once Upon a Time

Manhattan Transfer with Cincinnati Pops : Got Swing? : 1 CD : Erich Kunzel : 80592

Manhattan Transfer with Cincinnati Pops : Got Swing?

Dubbed "The Prince of Pops" by the Chicago Tribune, Erich Kunzel's Cincinnati Pops Orchestra has been nominated for 5 Grammies under his direction, winning one in 1998, and we have to say that this is some of the best, most spirited big-band swing we've ever heard. Of special interest to us, of course, are the vocals, which are supplied by one of our favorite jazz groups, The Manhattan Transfer, former (and founding) member of the MT, 9-time Grammy winner Janis Siegel, and inventive singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli. There are 14 all accompanied (in fact, 7 of them are completely instrumental) tunes here, and not surprisingly our favorites are "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie," "Sugar" (That Sugar Baby of Mine), "Skyliner," and "Clouds" (adapted from "Nuages,") featuring the MT; "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Avalon" with John Pizzarelli; and "I'll Be Seeing You," with Janis Siegel. As we would place the Swing Era at or near the top of all musical eras, we thought "Got Swing" was a treat, and every tune gave us the urge to get up and dance!

Songlist: String of Pearls, Stompin' at the Savoy, Choo Choo Ch' Boogie, Straighten Up and Fly Right, Sugar, Skyliner, Blues in the Night, Avalon, It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing), Clouds, adapted from "Nuages", Jumpin' at the Woodside, Flying Home, I'll Be Seeing You, Sweet Georgia Brown

Take 6 : The Standard : 1 CD : 3142

Take 6 : The Standard

All male sextet Take 6, one of the most innovative and influential Contemporary Christian a cappella groups of all time, was formed at Oakwood College in Alabama in the early 1980s. In 1988 they released "Take 6" nationally, and won Grammies for both best Jazz and best Gospel group. After 9 groundbreaking, critically acclaimed releases, this long-awaited recording, aptly named "the standard," returns to those jazz roots, covering standards like "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Straighten Up and Fly Right" (featuring George Benson), the scattish "Seven Steps to Heaven" (featuring Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau and Till Bronner), the moody a cappella "Windmills of Your Mind," "Someone To Watch Over Me," "A Tisket A Tasket" (featuring a sample of the original recording by Ella Fitzgerald), the whimsical "Bein' Green" (with an unexpected Obama plug at the end), the a cappella "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" (featuring Aaron Neville and some great faux horns), and a jazzy a cappella cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" (featuring Brian McNight). Take 6's Contemporary Christian material is also included, the autobiographical "Back to You," a bluenote a cappella "Shall We Gather at the River" and the lovely, wordless, accompanied "Grace." Wow. This recording sets "the standard" for Vocal Jazz/Contemporary Christian CD of the year. Don't miss this one, it's a soulful treat from beginning to end!

Songlist: Sweet Georgia Brown, Straighten Up And Fly Right, Seven Steps To Heaven, Windmills Of Your Mind, Someone To Watch Over Me, Grace (pre-prise), Back To You, A Tisket A Tasket, Bein' Green, Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans, What's Going On, Shall We Gather At The River, Grace

Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 1999 : 1 CD

Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 1999    onsale

This year's program was the most diverse and exciting yet. Filled with emerging groups, as well as Sweepstakes favorites such as Chicago Voice Exchange, the competition was intense indeed. Seven, from New York, garnered top honors, with their intricate and multi-textured voicings, heard to best advantage on "Bridge Over Troubled Water"; the group's arrangements are expanding the universe of sound. Taking second place were the Standards, five brothers whose onstage appeal and energy charmed everyone. Minimum Wage's outrageous humor, as exemplified by "The Last Cowboy Song," had the audience begging for mercy (or more?) Other musical highlights include the ringing tones of last year's champs, Metropolis (a barbershop quartet), the Euphorics, with "Message In A Bottle" and Pickup 6's medley of Beatles favorites.

Songlist: Bless This House, Underdog, Route 66, Sweet Georgia Brown, Baby I'm With You, Message In A Bottle, Ja'ackson, Lean On Me, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mary, Don't You Weep, Patty Duke, Beatles Medley, Our Day Will Come, Bring Him Home, The Last Cowboy Song, I Sing Low, Hands To Heaven, I Believe
