Unfortunately our understanding of Italian is limited to restaurant menus, but a scan of the track list indicates that the spiritual and jazz standard are this CD's focus. These five European chaps obviously have a fondness for these particularly American forms; "Climbing Up The Mountain," "Summertime," "Satin Doll," and "Sophisticated Lady" are the mediums for Alti & Bassi's swinging big band style. Vocal orchestrations and scat are vital ingredients, and the group has a great deal of skill and versatility. Their gospel turn on "I'm Rolling Through This Unfriendly World" is warm and convincing. Occasional piano accompaniment.

"Il Favoloso" is our favorite all-male Italian quartet's singing tribute to legendary American composer George Gershwin. Negri's "Charleston Prelude," and Zapponi-Luttazzi's title tune, complete the songlist, most of which are live and accompanied. The Gold went to St. Charles, Missouri's dynamic Ambassadors of Harmony, who sing Rogers and Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and Frank Loesser's "New Ashmolean Marching Society and Student's Conservatory Band," which must be heard to be believed. 2nd Place went to The Northern Lights, with "Make Them Hear You," 3rd to New Tradition Chorus, who recall the minstrel shows with Stephen Foster's "Medley: Camptown Races/Ring Ring de Banjo/Buffalo Gals," 4th to Alexandria Harmonizers" with Gershwin's bluesy "Summertime," and 5th to The Alliance, who give us "The Sunshine of Your Smile." Byrd's "Agnus Dei" to a wonderful "Tribute to the Beatles" medley of 18 Fab Four classics and "Yesterday," to Gershwin's "Summertime," Rodgers and Hart's "My Romance" and Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night." Two bonus tracks include Richard Rodney Bennett's "A Good Night," commissioned by Paul McCartney from "A Garland for Linda," and "Brahm's Lullaby." Certainly an odd repertoire mix, but Cantabile's perfectly pitched, fresh, joyous sound works well with just about anything they choose to perform.

Formed in 1981, Voce has won an Outstanding Performance Award from DownBeat, first place at the 1998 Reno Jazz Festival and performances at Switzerland's prestigious Montreaux Jazz Festival. There are 10 cuts on this impressive second album (their first was 2007's excellent "Just One of Those Things"), some favorites among these sometimes accompanied pieces are Michel LeGrand's "I Will Wait for You," Anders Edenroth's a cappella "The Grass Grows Greener," the mellow "Something 'bout Believing," George & Ira Gershwin's classic "Summertime," Thad Jones' moody a cappella "Somna Mitt Barn," a sweet a cappella adaption of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and Imogen Heap's wonderfully harmonic a cappella "Hide and Seek." Voce has a beautiful sound, creative arrangements, and we loved "Timepieces!"

Hi-Lo's : Clap Yo' Hands   

Comprising two of their records from the 1950's-1954's "I Presume" and 1958's "In Stereo"-"Clap Yo' Hands" captures the close harmony sound of the Hi-Lo's, who defined the vocal jazz of their era. The playground for the talents of the brilliant arranger Gene Puerling, who went on to form the Singers Unlimited, the Hi-Lo's toured with theJudy Garland show and sang with legends such as Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney. These tracks are orchestrated (by Frank Comstock, who backed the group on many early recordings) and include wonderful standards such as "Summertime," "Long Ago and Far Away," "Surrey With The Fringe On Top" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It." This is a jubilant recording that is alive with the joy of music. We have it on good authority that "Clap Yo' Hands" includes some of the group's favorite songs.

Hi-Lo's : Under Glass / I Presume   

A spate of Hi-Lo's albums have been recently released on CD, but this may be the most auspicious re-emergence yet: the Hi-lo's first two records, paired up for over an hour's worth of great listening. Though some of the cuts can be found on other recordings, the a cappella "Molly Malone" and "Through The Years" aren't available anywhere else, and the remarkable harmonizations that were Gene Puerling's unique artistry are gloriously displayed in a riot of tonal color. Also, "Georgia On My Mind," and "They Don't Believe Me," from their first 1953 recording session for Trend, are included; the latter was on the previously available "Nice Work If You Can Get It" CD, which has since been discontinued. Anyway, suffice it to say, that among the vocal harmony groups of the 1950's, the Hi-lo's were much imitated, but never duplicated, and their appeal is timeless. Mostly accompanied, with orchestrations by frequent music director Frank Comstock.

In May of 1994 ten young collegiate men, who had been chosen by founder Townsend Belisle, arrived in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with the noble intention of singing together for a living. Creating jobs for themselves by singing on the street, in parks, on beaches and had regular gigs in places like Thompson's Clam Bar and Richard's Galleries. By late summer they had put together a crowd of regulars, an opening act for the Mamas and the Papas, and a sold-out show in Hyannis, which is captured in this live recording. 21 songs, particularly wonderful are: "Good Ol' A Cappella," "Summertime," the Fairfield Four's arrangement of "Roll, Jordan Roll," "Crazy," "House of Blue Lights," "Wonderful World," the traditional "Drunken Sailor," Manhattan Transfer's arrangement of "How High The Moon," Richard Greene's "Share A Load," "Freeze Frame," a lovely "Shenandoah" and "Everything She Wants." To listen to this trio reveals what a great influence this group has been on so many artists, in terms of choice of material and style. The most sophisticated and hip vocal treatments - Hendricks was a foremost developer of the vocalese technique - they change moods on a dime and are impossible to predict. Ross takes the lead on "Midnight Indigo," a sultry trickle of sweat on the back of the neck. "Moanin'" mixes up roadhouse blues with the sweetest of refrains. "Summertime" is just on the inside of a discordant wail, an eerie lament. Also included: "Cloudburst" and "Centerpiece."

Nexus Quartet : Nexus   

This Denver-based quartet has roots in the Denver A Cappella Project, and includes tenor George (of 1982 Gold Medal-winners Classic Collection), his son Mike, baritone, bass Mark and lead Ryan. At the 2007 Barbershop Harmony Society contest in Denver, Following the release of this, their debut recording, NeXus moved up from 27th place to 19th place in the elite top 20 in only their 3rd year of competition. We particularly appreciated the songlist in the liner notes, that included some of the group's influences: "Just A Gigolo," inspired by Classic Collection, "The Dock of the Bay" and "Stand By Me," inspired by Rockapella, and "Don't Worry Be Happy," inspired by the Blenders. Five guys came out of the Somerset Housing Projects in Baltimore who sang anywhere and everywhere-at the Jack in the Box they were known as the Box Boys. That name changed to Regency, and with many collegiate music awards and some personnel changes later, the group tours over 300 universities and colleges a year. At 1 pm on June 27, 1994, Regency went into the recording studio to eat Philly steaks and fries, and to sing and sing some more. At 10 pm they had finished an incredible recording session, 21 songs completed a cappella without overdubs or studio trickery. Some favorites are a pair of Presley covers, "Jailhouse Rock" and "Hound Dog," Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti," The Righteous Bros' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," Sam Cooke's "Only Sixteen," James Brown's "I Got You," The Young Rascals' "Good Lovin'," "The Most Beautiful Girl In the World," the Isley Bros' "Shout," and "Day-O" (Banana Boat Song). This is the authentic street corner Doo Wop, with a bunch of guys who know each other as absolutely as they know the songs. This CD is a remarkable achievement and a real treat!

We're of the almost certainly biased opinion that the Harmony Sweeps Finals are the best a cappella shows in the world. Imagine 8 groups, who have come in first in Regional competition with 10 other groups in places like New York, Boston, the Bay Area, Chicago and LA, performing before a packed auditorium in San Rafael, CA for 12 minutes each, for the coveted National Championship. Each year outdoes the last, and "electric" doesn't do justice to the 2003 Finals. There are 18 songs on the CD, two from each group and two from '02 Champs, and very funny hosts, LA's Perfect Gentlemen, "Gimme Some Skin" and the guitar accompanied (!) "Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me." The Bay Area's hilarious Moosebutter brings us "Psycho, The Musical," winner of "Best Original Song" (lyrics), and their trademark parody, "Star Wars," part of a set that won them 2nd place honors. The Pacific NW's Second Chance contribute a funky "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the very funny beach song parody "Sand Down My Pants." LA's Undivided Musical Group sing "Amarte Mas" and nail Ward Swingle's arrangement of "Mission Impossible Theme." Boston's All About Buford do wonderful covers of the Gershwins' "Summertime" and Rodgers & Hart's "My Funny Valentine." Chicago's Nightwatch sing two songs from their infamous "Diner Set" (complete with ballistic donut), "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," and New York's very smooth Cadence covers "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Tempted' beautifully. Denver's Groove Society gets the crowd up and rocking with "You're No Good" and the classic "Listen to the Music." Unbelievably, as good as all these groups were, the best was saved for last, Mid-Atlantic winner Idea of North from Australia, who shine on "Mas Que Nada" (which won the David Lichtman Award for Best Arrangement) and Randy Newman's heart-tugging "When She Loved Me." Idea of North got the nod from the judges, and won Audience Favorite, while Moosebutter and Cadence placed 2nd and 3rd. A chorus of "Goodnight Sweetheart" later we were all walking out of beautiful Marin Veterans Auditorium, not believing how good a show we had just seen and heard!

This selection of close harmony arrangements offers several well-known items by composers as diverse as Kern, Gershwin and Mancini, but also includes some newer works, including a Vasari commission from Bob Chilcott called "Dances in the Streets" and "Birthday Madrigals" by John Rutter. This fine recording includes many arrangements by Ward Swingle with whom the ensemble has often worked with.

Since its founding in 1991 by two BYU students, the 8 to 9 men group has gone through many changes of personnel and otherwise (opening twice for Rockapella!). From 1994 to 2001 the group was directed by Jim Anglesey, "Slam" represents his final effort with VP before moving on professionally. Jim's love was watching the group grow as goodwill ambassadors for BYU, the LDS Church, and for a cappella singing, routinely going to schools to teach vocal workshops wherever they'd go, for instance. 13 spirited (sometimes even manic), funny, amazing songs: some favorites: Weird Al Yankovic's painful "Since You've Been Gone/One More Minute," "Breakfast at Denny's," a spot-on parody of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (and what the title is referring to, get it?) "Pennies from Heaven," "I'll Be," "Love One Another," "The Cup of Life," a bluesy "Summertime," and the inspirational "In The First Light." Excellent, and recommended!

Founded in 1977, Redhot and Blue is Yale's oldest coed a cappella group. The youthful 18-voice group has dazzled audiences from the White House to the embassies of Prague, onboard the QE II and onstage at Carnegie Hall. Fresh twists on jazz classics, Broadway showstoppers, and toe-tapping favorites of all genres fuel their entertaining and passionate performances. Sophisticated jazz standards and Broadway showtunes form the core of Redhot's repertoire, though they also sing a variety of more contemporary hits. Recipients of many CARA awards, "Yeah..." is the group's 5th CD. 19 songs, some favorites: the classic "42nd Street," Gershwin's "A Foggy Day" and "Summertime," "Fever," Mel Brooks' "When You've Got It, Flaunt It," "Scotch and Soda," Laura Nyro's "Sweet Blindness," Cole Porter's "Red, Hot and Blue," and "A Man Come Into Egypt," from the group's 25th Anniversary concert. All arrangements are by Rh&B alumni. Good stuff, spirited and energetic collegiate a cappella!

Chaka Khan has been singing for 35 years. The multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning singer began her career in the early 1970s with the pre-imminent funk group Rufus. A beautiful and dynamic vocalist, Chaka was raised on Chicago's South Side. She began her career as a solo artist interestingly, singing jazz. Her fame however, came with contemporary solo funk hits like "I Feel For You" and the classic "I'm Every Woman," which she successfully recorded 10 years before Whitney Houston's cover version. This 1992 live performance at New York's famed jazz club The Blue Note, finds Chaka in the musical environment in which she has always felt most creative. In great voice and surrounded by five talented jazzmen, she performs a rare catalog of songs closely associated wit jazz. Several of which cannot be found on her recordings. She sings the Ellington/Strayhorn "Take The 'A' Train," Rodgers and Hart's "My Funny Valentine," plus "Summertime" and "I Loves You Porgy" from Gershwin's folk opera Porgy and Bess.
