The Four Aces : Hits From Hollywood and Broadway : 00 1 CD : 1153

The Four Aces : Hits From Hollywood and Broadway

"Hits from Hollywood & Broadway" is another generous, remastered collection of pop hits, this one by the first "Fab Four," The Four Aces, the most successful recording group worldwide in the 1950s, scoring 44 chart successes between 1951 and 1959. Most of those have been reissued, but their album tracks have been neglected, and Sepia Records decided to feature 26 selections (all accompanied) from films and stage shows that the Aces recorded. Beginning in 1946 when Al Alberts got together with sax player Dave Mahoney. They got together back home in Pennsylvania with drummer Lou Silvestri and trumpeter Rosario "Sod" Vacarro, and evolved into a vocal quartet with Al at lead. Offered a song by local songwriters called "It's No Sin," the foursome recorded and distributed it themselves, which caught the attention of Decca, who signed the Aces, who were on their way! These are all well-known and loved songs: "Standing on the Corner," "Too Close for Comfort," "Get Me to the Church on Time," "Till There Was You," "Tonight," "Small World," "I Love Paris," "Bali Ha'i," "Hawaiian Wedding Song," "Arrivederci Roma," "Love is a Many Splendored Thing," "Whatever Will Be, Will Be," "Tammy, "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo" and "Three Coins in the Fountain," all of which feature the bright, upbeat, beautifully harmonic sound of the Four Aces. Sit back and enjoy this sweet blast from the past!

Songlist: Standing on the Corner, Long Before I Knew You, Too Close For Comfort, Anyone Would Love You, How Can You Forget, Get Me To The Church On Time, It's Good To Be Alive, Till There Was You, You Are Beautiful, Tonight, Two Faces In The Dark, Small World, I Love Paris, Bali Ha'i, South of the Border, Hawaiian Wedding Song, Waltzing Matilda, Arrivederci Roma, Love Is A Many Splendid Thing, Whatever Will Be, Will Be, Written On The Wind, Secret Love, Tammy, Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo, To Love Again, Three Coins In The Fountain

Four Lads : Moments To Remember : 00 1 CD : TGN1079.2

Four Lads : Moments To Remember

Their sound was quintessential Fifties: bright, melodic, sentimental and uncomplicated. Often working with greats like Mitch Miller and Frank Loesser, the Four Lads have contributed some great songs to fifties pop music. This collection includes the very best of this group. Selections include novelty songs such as "Gilly, Gilly Ossenfeffer" and their first gold record hit "Istanbul." Also included are many of the songs written by Bernie Toorish under his pen name of Dazz Jordan, like "The Mocking Bird" and "My Little Angel," written for his wife. Since their arrival in America in 1950, this Canadian quartet has left us with many moments to remember.

Four Lads : The Singles Collection : 00 1 CD : 7665

Four Lads : The Singles Collection

Collectables Records assumes that we know the story of the legendary Lads from Toronto using a chance opportunity to appear at NYC's Le Ruban Bleu as a springboard to worldwide fame and fortune; their fresh, upbeat sound defining jazz/pop music in the 50s and early 60s. There's not a single biographical note in the liner notes, just a list of the 28 songs and when they were recorded. Let the music do the talking-fair enough! "Turn Back," "Rocks in My Bed," "He Who Has Love," "Gotta Go to the Fais Do Do," "Harmony Brown," the silly "Cleo and Meo" and "Do You Know What Lips are For," the Polka tune "Oh, That'll Be Joyful," "I've Got Four Big Brothers," the sexy, funny "A Little Bit" and "Guess What the Neighbors'll Say," the dramatic "Fountain of Youth," "Our Lady of Fatima," "Got A Locket in My Pocket" and the latest-recorded song, 1969's "The Sheik of Chicago"aside from occasional hits like "No, Not Much" and "Standing On The Corner," we've never heard most of this (band accompanied) material. But the butter-smooth harmonies that soar to breathtaking, ringing heights, innocent romantic lyrics and general silliness are still a joy, whether the song was a near-hit or merely an album-filler. "Collection" is a rare, surprising winner, pure, uncut 1950s romantic jazz/pop from one of the great male vocal quartets of all time!

Songlist: Turn Back, Rocks in My Bed, I Hate Myself in the Morning , Risin' Sun, He Who Has Love, Anymore, All I Desire, Gotta Go to the Fais Do Do, Harmony Brown, Cleo and Meo, Do You Know What Lips Are For, Oh, That'll Be Joyful, Pledging My Love (Forever My Darling), I've Got Four Big Brothers (To Look After Me), A Little Bit, Moments to Remember, I'll Never Know, No, Not Much!, Standing on the Corner, It's So Easy to Forget, Guess What the Neighbors'll Say, The Fountain of Youth, Sunday, Who Do You Think You Are?, Our Lady of Fatima, Got A Locket in My Pocket, Two Other People, The Sheik of Chicago

Mills Brothers : 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection

We wish all history sounded this good! The Mills Bros. started singing together in 1925, combining barbershop harmony with the jaunty rythms of the swing era. It was a sweet combination that led to a 70 year career! From 1942's "Paper Doll" to their 1968 rendition of "Cab Driver", these harmonious gentlemen had a string of top-40 hits and enjoyed enormous popularity. Warning for purists: all the songs are accompinied to some degree, usually lighty. But don't miss this CD because of that -these guys are under the directory under "debonair". Every song is a treat "Lazy River", "You Always Hurt the One You Love", "'Till Then,"I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm", "Someday", their marvelous hit "Glow Worm", "Standing on the Corner", and "Be My Life's Companion." Classic!

Songlist: Paper Doll, Lazy River, You Always Hurt the One You Love, Till Then, Across the Alley from the Alamo, I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm, Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You), Nevertheless (I'm In Love With You), Be My Life's Companion, The Glow Worm, Standing On the Corner, Cab Driver
