Acoustix are one of the most consistently impressive barbershop groups performing today. "Cool Yule," their first holiday-themed recording, will add to their legend. Greg Volk arranged several songs, including "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch," (sung by bass Joel Rutherford, who also contributed two arrangements). Two Beach Boys scores, "Auld Lang Syne" and "Little Saint Nick," and a Mervyn Warren (of Take 6) chart, "The First Noel," show the quartet's burgeoning versatility, and it sounds great. For those listeners who prefer Acoustix to stay close to their barbershop origins, the locked-in chords of "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" and "Mary Had A Baby" will be a treat. Breath of Soul : Blue Christmas   

"Nashville's Premier Vocal Band," Breath of Soul, David, Jesse, Tony and Jake, brings us what seems to be their first recording as a trio (vocal percussionist Jake is not pictured on the cover, and there are no liner notes) a surprising, thought-provoking 8-song Christmas CD, recorded in 2009. For singing together only a few years, BOS sounds like a much more experienced group. We're especially impressed with their cutting-edge arrangement, most probably done by baritone Jesse Upah, who did all the arranging on BOS's excellent 2010 release "Breath of Soul." "O Come O Come Emmanuel" is a bluenote, call-and-response arrangement of the classic carol unlike any we've ever heard, "Satisfaction" is a vocal percussion-driven original with a memorable hook, "Peace, love, hope, satisfaction!;" the title tune is a Doo-Woppy walking Blues with a sweet whistle solo, "Silver Bells" also has a walking-rhythm Doo-Wop flavor with sweet leads and harmonies, and "Angels We Have Heard on High" is given a nice 80s pop rearrangement with a cool lead that eventually dances its way back to the original chorus tune. "Rudolph" has a jazzy, 50s nightclub flavor, a fairly standard "Silent Night" shows off BOS's considerable harmonic blending talents as it segues into a gentle "Away in A Manger" and the powerful "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" gets a new melody and new words ("Then ring the Bells so loud and deep, God is not dead, nor does He sleep, peace on earth, goodwill to men!"). Breath of Soul, which we would classify as "Contemporary Christian" on "Blue Christmas," has taken a lot of chances here, while showing off its collection of non-instrumental sounds and whistles, technical augmentations, and of course, yummy leads and harmonies. And it all shows us a group that we feel is destined for great things!

Brian, Nate, Brad, Nathaniel, Mike and Nate are five-man a cappella band from Branson, MO who entered the national spotlight in 2005 when they placed in the top 10 while performing their Oreo Cookie Jingle for Randy Jackson. Since then they have been touring the world, and now perform over 200 shows per year in Branson and throughout the U.S. They have been seen on multiple TV shows, cruise ships and performing arts centers around the world, and were recently picked to compete on NBC's The Sing-Off! It was the mid-1950s, the early days of Rock and Roll, Bill Haley & the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis were exploding on the charts. The Fontane Sisters, backed by a skilled combo of rock musicians led by Billy Vaughn, was one of the few acts to transition successfully into the new energy-charged medium. First singing backup with Perry Como on a number of popular hits, were offered their own contract with RCA based on that success. In the early 50s they recorded some novelty songs like "If I knew you were comin' I'd've Baked A Cake," and country songs like "The Tennessee Waltz," "Walkin' The Floor Over You," "Cold, Cold Heart" and "Handsome Stranger" with the Sons of the Pioneers. "Till Then" in 1954 was their last recording for RCA, and they really hit their stride on Dot Records, with a cover of The Charms' "Hearts of Stone," which was #1 on the charts for 3 weeks. A succession of major hit records, many of them covers from the rhythm and blues charts dominated the airwaves and jukeboxes throughout the remainder of the 50s, the Sisters fading from view in the new decade. Some more favorites are "Mexican Joe," "Mississippi Mud," "Makin' Like a Train," "the Popcorn Song" (featuring Howdy Doody), "Alabama Jubilee," "The Cinderella Work Song," "The Fortune Teller Song," "The Bumpity Bus," "Down Home Rag," "The Turtle Song" "I Get the Blues When It Rains," and "Rhumba Boogie," but we could go on. There are 60, all band-accompanied songs on this 2 CD set, silly, schmaltzy, country, rock, pop, blues-it all adds up to tremendous fun stuff from the crazy 1950s! Four Shadow : Joy   

Prolific, talented all-male Minneapolis-based Contemporary quartet Four Shadow brings us their second Christmas CD (their first was the excellent "Flake"). "Joy" begins with powerful vocal percussion on "Jingle Bells," and features strong originals, "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and the lovely "Baby Jesus" by Kevin, who sings lead on both; the touching "A Father's Christmas Wish" by David, who sings lead; and "Close Your Eyes" by Drew, who also sings lead. Very nice covers of "Winter Wonderland," "Silver Bells," great deep bass on "Frosty the Snowman," and upbeat arrangements of "Joy to the World," "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and "Let It Snow." Also included is a hilarious cover of "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." A beautiful, fun, all-a cappella Christmas CD from Four Shadow!

Rudy Hart was the namesake of this excellent chorus who unfortunately is no longer with us. Rudy had a real gift as a barbershop arranger and his arrangements are some of the best anywhere. Here he directs the chorus as they sing his arrangements of these Holiday favorites. Bound to please the most discerning of barbershop fans. This gem of a recording was recently rediscovered and is now available on compact disc.

This multiple gold-medal award winning chorus is consistently delightful. Directed by Dr. Greg Lyne, their sound is immense, yet compact. With marvelous adaptations of favorites such as "Joy To The World" (where the use of dynamics, stepwise motion and rhythmic variation between voice-parts creates a surprising excitement), or the "Christmas Waltz Medley" (featuring "My Favorite Things"), the Masters of Harmony are never predictable. The "Gift Carol," a Catalonian folk carol with a delicate and exquisitely harmonized melody in 3/4, is a highlight.

This recording from the Moscow Boys Choir is a selection of the variety of styles that this choir performs. From Russian folk and classical to traditional and contemporary Christmas songs, this choir will captivate you. This unique Contemporary Jazz octet, founded by artistic director Charles Mead and formed of pairs of sopranos, altos, tenors and basses, has a full, almost vocally orchestral sound. Roberta Q. Jackson directs the over 100 strong PSG, accompanied by the Portland Youth Philharmonic. This is a Christmas CD, and there are 21 songs in celebration of Christmas, from sacred (Galuppi's "Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110) Movements, I, II, II") to pop (Elliot's "Jingle Bell Swing"). There are actually 2 choirs here, the Premier Choir of over 100 voices, and the Debut Choir of about 90, and when they sing together on something like "Silver Bells," it's pretty impressive. An excellent Christmas CD, for yourself to enjoy every Christmas, or to give to a loved one.

"Ray Conniff," we were thinking as we opened "Christmas With," "elevator music." Then we played the CD, and found ourselves flooded with memories of what Christmas was like for us, growing up in the 50's and 60's. The smell of hot roasted nuts and fresh chocolates at the bustling five and dime as we stepped into the warmth out of a snowstorm, and what was playing in the background was Conniff's "Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer." There are 12 delightful songs here, each lightly (and jazzily) accompanied, and each arranged by Mr. Conniff in his inimitable manner, using the voices as the main focus of the orchestral fabric, and gaining special inspiration from the cheery character that most of the songs have. Of course there are ballads like the classic "Silver Bells," the romantic "Christmas Song," "Greensleeves" and "White Christmas," but most of the songs, "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Winter Wonderland," "Frosty The Snowman," "Sleigh Ride" and "Christmas Bride," are as bright, innocent and jolly as befits a Christmas dancing party. We loved every cut and bet you will too!

One of our most favorite groups (who don't need any introduction, we're sure) graces this holiday season with a dozen songs which cover the entire spectrum of aural moods from past to present. Opening with a sweetly lilting "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day" which captures the traditional spirit with only a touch of Rockapellan embellishment we proceed to a Thatcherized (clever light vocal percussion), upbeat, Scott Leonard song which has one wondering just which year it became a big hit. It did, didn't it? It must have, it just sounds so familiar. We immediately are segued into an almost vaudevillian "Glow Worm/It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" medley. Through beautiful tradition and several of Scott Leonard's original compositions our heart strings are plucked to a fare-the-well. At the end of this grand recording we have Scott's "Hold Out for Christmas" which has only been released prior to this CD on one of the Rockapella Japanese imports. Then are sent off with our harmony hats in hand by Barry Carl's unbelievable bass and Jeff Thatchers pyrotechnics on "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch." This seasonal recording will add a sparkle of joy to your holiday.

2020 holiday release. Straight No Chaser is an all-male a Capella group from Indiana. The group formed during their college years at Indiana University in 1996 and have been together ever since. In 2008, Atlantic Records noticed a video for their 12 Days Of Christmas and signed the group immediately. SNC has been releasing music on Atlantic ever since and has found success covering Top 40 songs as well as recording Christmas songs.
