Billy Elliot the Musical is a musical based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot. The music is by Sir Elton John, and book and lyrics are by Lee Hall (who wrote the film's screenplay). The musical revolves around motherless Billy, who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The story of his personal struggle and fulfillment are balanced against a counter-story of family and community strife caused by the UK miners' strike (1984-1985) in Northern England. Hall's screenplay was inspired in part by A. J. Cronin's novel, The Stars Look Down, and the musical's opening song is an homage. The musical opened in London's West End in 2005 and was nominated for nine Laurence Olivier Awards, winning four including Best New Musical. The success of Billy Elliot the Musical has led to productions in Australia, on Broadway and elsewhere. In New York, it won ten Tony Awards and ten Drama Desk Awards, including, in each case, best musical. It has also won numerous awards in Australia including a record-tying seven Helpmann Awards.

Coco's Lunch : A Whole New Way Of Getting Dressed   

The five young women singers who call themselves Coco's Lunch have got rhythm, they've got music, and they've got that swing (the kind that it don't mean a thing if you ain't got it)! For the five years they've been together they've built a reputation as one of Australia's most outstanding and innovative a cappella groups. They weave earthy songs with driving (non-vocal) percussion (and there is your odd flute passage), drawing on the sounds of the world in a distinctly Australian way. "Dressed" is Coco's third CD, following "Invisible Rhythm" and "Wally Wombat Shuffle." The Songs (all written and/or composed by group members) are: "Shine," "Thulele Mama Ya," "Nature's Vanishing Points," "All The Wild Wonders," "A Whole New Way," "Fly Away," "Shifting Time," "Sleepless," "Night Reserviert," "Unity" and "Sister My Sister." Formed over 30 years ago and one of the very early contemporary a cappella The Flying Pickets are still going strong today and continue to tour extensively across Europe. The group members have changed over the years but the level of excellence has stayed consistent and it easy to tell listening to this fine recording why they have remained popular for all these years. Each one of these Christmas tunes is creatively arranged along with the strong voices makes for a delightful holiday treat. This recording deserves to be in your collection.

The Gas House Gang : A Little Night Music   

The Gang appeared on the International Medalist road to supremacy in 1991 with a third place medal. In 1992 they were second which rather prepared the world for their Calgary appearance in 1993, at which they were awarded the grand accolade. These wonderful singers also have a broad sense of humor which will send any classical music aficionado into guffaws as they parody Mozart in "Eine Kleine Not Musik." This reviewer has played that tune on a radio show several times and always received more calls for information about it than any other single piece of music! This is not, however, just a comedic group but recognized as one of the best singing groups in the world.

The four Mills Brothers had a style that combined the best elements of vaudeville, Negro minstrelsy and the barbershop quartet with elements of the new jazz sound. Their habit of cupping their hands over their mouths to create an orchestral sound (similar to effects created by Europe's Comedy Harmonists), was a sensational factor in their success story, and appearances on popular radio programs like "Rudy Vallee's Fleishmann's Yeast Hour" led to their first million-selling record, "Tiger Rag/Nobody's Sweetheart" in 1931. The Brothers endeared themselves to movie audiences the world over with appearances on such hits as "Big Broadcast of 1932" with Bing Crosby, Kate Smith, Cab Calloway and the Boswell Sisters.

Formed in the Spring of 2002, all-male Westminster began with 15 members, whose average age was 20. Since then the ensemble has grown to over 50 members and gone on to capture the SPEBSQSA Far Western District Chorus Championship in 2003 and 2005, as well as placing 2nd in the 2006 International Chorus Contest. With an average age in the mid-20s, Westminster is the youngest chorus ever to grace the International Stage. This album is a "best-of" grouping of the group's "Collected Works," including two live cuts from the 2004 Internationals, "Shine" and "So Long Mother;" and "The Way You Look Tonight" and "South Rampart Street Parade" from the 2005 FWD Contest. Also included is a pair of live cuts from the quartet OC Times--"Come Fly with Me" and "Good Luck Charm." Other winners are "Great Day," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Bright Was the Night" and bonus track "Ave Maria."
