Love For Sale

Music by Cole Porter

Love for Sale" was originally considered in bad taste, even scandalous. In the initial Broadway production, it was performed by Kathryn Crawford, portraying a streetwalker, with three girlfriends (Waring's Three Girl Friends) as back-up singers, in front of Reuben's, a popular restaurant of the time. As a response to the criticism, the song was transferred from the white Crawford to the African American singer Elisabeth Welch, who sang with back-up singers in a scene set in front of Harlem's Cotton Club.

Despite the fact the song was banned from radio airplay, or perhaps because of it, it became a hit, with Libby Holman's version going to #5 and the "Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians" version going to #14, both in 1931.

Notable recordings since include Hal Kemp in 1939, Billie Holiday in 1945, Stan Kenton in 1950 (arranged by Pete Rugolo), Joyce Bryant in 1952,[1] Eartha Kitt in the 1950s, Ella Fitzgerald in 1956 (Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook), and again in 1972 on her Ella Loves Cole album, Tony Bennett in 1957, Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley for 1958 Miles and Somethin' Else, Anita O'Day in 1959, Julie London in 1961, Dexter Gordon in 1962, Shirley Horn in 1963, Al Hirt on his 1965 album, Live at Carnegie Hall,[2]

Marion Linton : Cole Porter A Cappella : Mixed 5-8 Parts : Sheet Music Collection

Marion Linton : Cole Porter A Cappella

Beginning as a waltz, "I Get A Kick Out Of You," this lively Cole Porter tune goes into 4 at the bridge. Initiated by the bass, this time change provides a good vehicle for practicing four in the space of three and vice versa. The tune is short, punctuated by rhythmic shots and ends with a bang. "Let's Do It" is impossible to sing without a smile. Humor, wit, quotes as well as insect and animal sounds thrive throughout its four verses. It's a challenge but well worth the work--and talk about a crowd please! "Love For Sale" is a challenging setting for Cole Porter's cynical look at love. From a soulful alto solo, we move to an up-tempo Latin groove suggestive of life on the street. Featured again in the bridge is the alto whose message is colored by humorous comments and quotes. Rich harmonies abound and build to a dynamic ending. A vamp is used throughout "What Is This Thing Called Love" as an introduction, interlude, ending and even as accompaniment for a be-bop chorus where high women's voices bemoan the pain of love gone wrong. Soprano, as solo or section, is featured on melody throughout this chart.

Songlist: I Get A Kick Out of You, Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love), Love For Sale, What Is This Thing Called Love?

Phil Mattson : The Arrangements of Phil Mattson : SATB : Sheet Music Collection : Phil Mattson

Phil Mattson : The Arrangements of Phil Mattson

Here's a collection from vocal jazz guru Phil Mattson. "Love For Sale" was written for Chanticleer in a gospel a cappella feeling featuring a female solo. "Dancing In The Dark" was arranged for the Swedish vocal jazz ensemble, The Real Group. It is written in an a cappella bossa nova groove with some quasi-funk sections. The arrangement, which treats text as a metaphor for human life, features vocal percussion opportunities. The classic Manhattan Transfer arrangement of "Body and Soul" includes lyrics about Coleman Hawkins and jazz singer Eddie Jefferson. "Love Lost" - An original piece by the Four Freshmen that was the title song from their beautiful album with strings. Has opportunities to feature both vocal and instrumental solos. SATB with rhythm section. "You Must Believe In Spring" - A lovely text beautifully set to music by Michel LeGrand with lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, featuring spots for three short solos. One of the most profound lyrics over the last fifteen years. With piano.

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : The Hits Collection

Becoming famous during the 1940s and '50s for his radio and TV shows which brought him the accolade of being "The Man Who Taught America How to Sing". Fred Waring was a remarkable and high-profile personality in American popular music over many decades, becoming famous during the 1940s and '50s for his radio and TV shows which brought him the accolade of being The Man Who Taught America How to Sing. However, he began his career as a trombonist and bandleader performing hot dance music in the early 20s, and with his brother Thomas formed Waring's Pennsylvanians, whose recordings for Victor over the ensuing decade into the 1930s became hugely popular in the era often called The Roaring Twenties, before Waring's band abruptly stopped recording in 1932. Although there were no record sales charts in those days, there were sheet music and other listings, which have been analysed by researchers to produce chart listings for records. This great-value 46-track 2-CD set consists entirely of recordings by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians which feature in Top 15 positions in those chart analyses, and it comprises most of their listed hits. It includes early recordings of some of the songs from the era which became classics over the years, and features the No. 1s Sleep, Memory Lane, Laugh, Clown, Laugh!, Little White Lies and I Found a Million Dollar Baby. It's a hugely evocative musical snapshot of a remarkable era in popular music as it became a mass market phenomenon.

Songlist: Sleep, Stack O' Lee Blues, Memory Lane, Down Home Blues, Maytime, June Night, At the End of the Road, Collegiate, Freshie, I Love My Baby, Thanks for the Buggy Ride, Cherie, I Love You, Looking at the World Thro' Rose-Coloured Glasses, The Little White House (At the End of Honeymoon Lane), It Made Me Happy When You Made You Made Me Cry, I Love the College Girls, Where Do You Work-A John, Hello, Swanee, Hello, Just Another Day Wasted (Waiting for You), The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream, Was It a Dream!, Laugh, Clown, Laugh!, I Can't Do Without You, Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life, Roses of Yesterday, I'm Sorry, Sally, The Song I Love, Button Up Your Overcoat, My Lucky Star, and more

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : We All Scream For Ice Cream

It's hard to imagine having a career in music more sheer fun than Fred Waring's. Starting a banjo orchestra with his brother and friends while a student at Penn State University, the band did so well he had to choose between that and architecture, and chose music. By 1922 the 9-member band toured locally, growing to 11 members on their tour through Canada, playing snappy, fast-paced numbers. Success in the Detroit-Chicago area led to a Victor recording contract and "Sleep," their first smash hit. Movies (Harold Lloyd's "The Freshman," RKO's "Syncopation," the Broadway musical "Hello, Yourself," and Fred and the Pennsylvanians were a top box office draw on a level with Paul Whiteman's orchestra. Fred's own 1930 musical comedy "Rah Rah Daze" became a smash on Broadway called "The New Yorkers." Millions tuned into his regular radio programs with the band and Waring's "Glee Club," from 1933 through the war years, finally ending in 1957. During this time he had a regular TV slot from 1947 to 1954 and a daytime show in 1957. Concert tours continued through the 1970s, finally playing at Reagan's inaugural in 1981. Finding time to invent the famous Waring blender, Waring died at Penn State, where it had all begun, in 1984. Included here are 24 upbeat, funny, fun tunes, all orchestrally accompanied, songs like "Collegiate," "Does My Sweetie Do-And How!," the title tune, "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy," H'lo Baby," "Red Hot Chicago," "Dancing in The Dark," Irving Berlin's "Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee" and "I Say It's Spinach," "Fit as a Fiddle" and ending with their first hit, "Sleep." This is great stuff from a more innocent time, and plenty of it. Highly recommended.

Songlist: Collegiate, Does My Sweetie Do - And How!, I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream, Who's Blue Now?, Collegiana, Navy Blues, Let Me Sing and I'm Happy, H'lo Baby, Good for You, Bad for Me, Red Hot Chicago, So Beats My Heart for You, Little White Lies, Love for Sale, Sing A Little Jingle, Dancing in the Dark, Let's Have Another Cup of Coffee, I Say It's Spinach, How'm I Doin'?, Rhymes, A Picnic for Two, You'll Get By, Fit As A Fiddle, Young and Healthy, Sleep

VoicesIowa : How Do You Keep the Music Playing

Protogees of Phil Mattson, Voices Iowa are students at the prestigious School For Music Vocations/Southwestern Community College. Under such tutelage, one recognizes a burgeoning talent that will be the vocal jazz sound of tomorrow. Indeed, Bobby McFerrin's "Jubilee" is an athletic workout requiring stamina and fortitude, while, on the opposite end of the spectrum, "Body and Soul" demands an equal measure of control and abandon (the latter a Grammy nominated arrangement originally written for the Manhattan Transfer, and complimented by Richie Cole's saxophone). Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" (a cappella) is anchored by a finger-snapping rhythm and connected by walking bass notes, and finishes with an aexhilarating vocal glissando, a veritable firecracker.

Songlist: Since All is Passing, I Hear Music, How Do You Keep The Music Playing, Jubilee, Body And Soul, Yag Vet In Delig Rosa, Love For Sale, Embraceable You, Yours In My Heart Alone, Dancing In The Dark, Bons Amigos, That Lonesome Road
