Realtime : Take 5 : 1 CD

Realtime : Take 5

Based in Vancouver, Canada and Bellingham, WA, a very talented pair of brothers, Tim & Doug Broersma and Mark & Tom Metzger, form four part a cappella quartet Realtime, who have been singing together since 2003. They quickly placed 2nd in the Harmony Sweeps Pacific Northwest Regional in 2004, then they became the 2005 International Quartet Champions of the Barbershop Harmony Society in Salt Lake City! Having reached the pinnacle of the barbershop world, they stopped competing in Barbershop contests. However, they continued to compete in the Harmony Sweeps, winning the Pacific Northwest again in 2007, and again in 2010, where this supergroup is an early favorite to win the upcoming National Finals May 15th! Listening to their jazzy, wonderfully arranged rendition of Dave Brubeck's jazz standard "Take 5" underlines the group's determination to "sing and record music of many styles, whatever (we) decide we like!" What Realtime likes includes 13 diverse selections, Lennon/McCartney's pop hits "With A Little Help From My Friends" and "Blackbird," "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz, the Tennessee country anthem "Rocky Top," The show tune "On A Clear Day" (You Can See Forever), the scattish jazz favorite "Flight of the Foo Birds," the haunting spiritual "Follow the Drinking Gourd," and the Doobie Brothers' foot-tapping rocker "Listen to the Music." The last two cuts, "Funny Valentine" and "Georgia On My Mind," are harmoniously performed with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra. "Take 5" is great stuff, the rock-solid harmonies and pure entertainment chops of this gold-medal-winning Barbershop group, joyously applied to some of our favorite tunes in other genres. Listening to it, we can't wait to hear Realtime at the Finals!

Songlist: Take Five, With A Little Help From My Friends, Over the Rainbow, Rocky Top, Blackbird, On A Clear Day, Beautiful Love, Little Boy Lost, Flight of the Foo Birds, Follow the Drinking Gourd, Listen to the Music, Funny Valentine, Georgia On My Mind

Six Appeal : Plan A : 1 CD

Six Appeal : Plan A

Jordan, Michael, Nathan, Trey, Reuben and Andrew, hard-working members of dynamic 2012 Harmony Sweeps National Champion Six Appeal Vocal Band, are all about entertainment. We were in the delighted 2013 Finals audience in San Rafael's Veterans Memorial Auditorium, after being blown away by the 7 Regional champs, wondering how hosts Six Appeal would measure up with their set while the Audience Favorite votes were counted. We needn't have worried-Six Appeal nailed it, reminding us as we stood and cheered how much we love these guys! "Plan A" is SA's debut album, and all 12 cuts are feel-good hits: Elton John & Tim Rice's magnificent "Circle of Life," the Doobie Bros.' rock anthem "Listen to the Music," Andy Grammer's "Keep Your Head Up," a pair of sweet, sexy originals by group members, Jordan's "Little Black Dress," and Trey's "Do I;" Gavin DeGraw & Ryan Tedder's "Not Over You," Andrew Berkowitz' "On Your Love" and Billy Joel's deathless hit "And So It Goes." These Six can sing and dance their butts off, and they leave it all onstage. Don't miss "Plan A," and if you are lucky enough to have a chance to see them, for God's sake don't miss their live show!

Songlist: Circle of Life, Listen to the Music, Keep Your Head Up, Little Black Dress, Not Over You, Ordinary People, Not Over You, Do I?, Your Man, On Your Love, I Will Survive, And So It Goes

Toxic Audio : Chemistry : 1 CD

Toxic Audio : Chemistry

2000 Harmony Sweeps Champions, (and hilarious hosts of the 2001 Finals), the third CD of the 3 men and 2 women who are Toxic Audio has been much anticipated here, and we are happy to report that "Chemistry" is a smash! The CD begins with a wonderfully wacky "She Blinded Me With Science," the Doobie Bros' hit "Listen to the Music," "Hush" with a really cool vocal "bass" solo, "Words," with a very cool "rap" sequence, a sneakily funny parody, "God Must Have Spent A Little Less Time On You," with the line, "you're so ugly, when you were born, instead of slapping you, they slapped your mom," "Paperback Writer," Throat Culture's "I want a head like the heads you see on Easter Island, I want to stare at the seaside and do nothing." Next is "Stand By Me," a jazzy "Autumn Leaves," first in French and then upbeat in English, an ultra funky "Why Don't We Do It in the Road," a Michael Jackson song, and the disco hit, "Turn the Beat Around, which vocally segues into the drum solo from the surfer hit, "Wipeout." "Chemistry" is a winner and highly recommended!

Songlist: Blinded Me With Science, Listen to the Music, Voices Carry, Putting Words Into My Mouth, God Must've Spent a Little Less Time on You, Paperback Writer, Easter Island, Stand By Me, Autumn Leaves, Do It in the Road, Tunnel Vision, Turn the Beat Around

Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 2003 : 1 CD : 602437200321

Various Artists : Harmony Sweepstakes 2003    onsale

We're of the almost certainly biased opinion that the Harmony Sweeps Finals are the best a cappella shows in the world. Imagine 8 groups, who have come in first in Regional competition with 10 other groups in places like New York, Boston, the Bay Area, Chicago and LA, performing before a packed auditorium in San Rafael, CA for 12 minutes each, for the coveted National Championship. Each year outdoes the last, and "electric" doesn't do justice to the 2003 Finals. There are 18 songs on the CD, two from each group and two from '02 Champs, and very funny hosts, LA's Perfect Gentlemen, "Gimme Some Skin" and the guitar accompanied (!) "Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me." The Bay Area's hilarious Moosebutter brings us "Psycho, The Musical," winner of "Best Original Song" (lyrics), and their trademark parody, "Star Wars," part of a set that won them 2nd place honors. The Pacific NW's Second Chance contribute a funky "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the very funny beach song parody "Sand Down My Pants." LA's Undivided Musical Group sing "Amarte Mas" and nail Ward Swingle's arrangement of "Mission Impossible Theme." Boston's All About Buford do wonderful covers of the Gershwins' "Summertime" and Rodgers & Hart's "My Funny Valentine." Chicago's Nightwatch sing two songs from their infamous "Diner Set" (complete with ballistic donut), "Truck Drivin' Man" and "Yes Sir, That's My Baby," and New York's very smooth Cadence covers "Straighten Up and Fly Right" and "Tempted' beautifully. Denver's Groove Society gets the crowd up and rocking with "You're No Good" and the classic "Listen to the Music." Unbelievably, as good as all these groups were, the best was saved for last, Mid-Atlantic winner Idea of North from Australia, who shine on "Mas Que Nada" (which won the David Lichtman Award for Best Arrangement) and Randy Newman's heart-tugging "When She Loved Me." Idea of North got the nod from the judges, and won Audience Favorite, while Moosebutter and Cadence placed 2nd and 3rd. A chorus of "Goodnight Sweetheart" later we were all walking out of beautiful Marin Veterans Auditorium, not believing how good a show we had just seen and heard!

Songlist: Mas Que Nada, Amarte Mas, Psycho: The Musical, Go, Tell it on the Mountain, My Funny Valentine, Truck Drivin' Man, Gimme Some Skin, Straighten Up and Fly Right, You're Not So Good, Tempted, When She Loved Me, Sand Down My Pants, Star Wars, Meanest Thing You Ever Did Was Kiss Me, Yes Sir, That's My Baby, Mission Impossible Theme, Summertime, Listen to the Music
