Basin Street Blues

Music by Spencer Williams

"Basin Street Blues" is a song often performed by Dixieland jazz bands, written by Spencer Williams in 1928 and recorded that year by Louis Armstrong. The verse with the lyric "Won't you come along with me/To the Mississippi..." was later added by Glenn Miller and Jack Teagarden. The Basin Street of the title refers to the main street of Storyville, the red-light district of early 20th-century New Orleans, north of the French Quarter. It became a red light district in 1897

    Release Date: 1928

Alchemy : From Old.. to Blue!

Pride (and 2003 Champions) of SPEBSQSA's Illinois District, Alchemy has been rising steadily through the Barbershop competition in their quest for the Gold. "Old St. Louie," "Birth of the Blues," "I Only Have Eyes for You," the very apt "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans," "Dayton, Ohio-1903," the very funny "Mississippi Squirrel Revival," the deathless "Lida Rose" in medley with "Will I Ever Tell You," "Gospel Medley" and "Stars Fell On Alabama" are pure Barbershop entertainment, that play on our heartstrings and nostalgia strings with the best of them. Sweet harmonies, pure ringing chords-this is the good stuff. Enjoy!

The Chordettes : Harmony Encores / Your Requests

As this is another two-LPs for the price of one CD, we can hear you say, "Let me guess, they'll love this one too." Bingo! The Chordettes, who we think of as the first great Sweet Adelines group, pioneered women's barbershop singing when there was no such thing, and they did it with class, professionalism and style. "Harmony Encores" was released by Columbia in 1952, and "Sing Your Requests" in 1954, and they contain 23 classics of harmony and arrangement. While finding the original LPs in any kind of condition to play is unlikely, here you get the original master recordings on a CD with pictures of the four women, the original album covers and the original liner notes. From the opening cut, "Carolina Moon," to "Drifting and Dreaming," "Kentucky Babe," "The Anniversary Waltz," "Wait 'Til the Sun Shines, Nellie," "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now," "Hello! Ma Baby" and the final cut "Darkness On The Delta," this is Entertainment!

Gentlemen's Agreement : Gentlemen's Agreement    Out of Print

Though each of the singers who made up the quartet had prior contest singing experience, it is a fact they went from a brand new group to International Champions in just nineteen months. One week after winning they spent three weeks in Viet Nam entertaining the troops for the USO. Part of their vocal appeal, for this reviewer, is the fact that the lead singer, Drayton Justus, had a higher voice than most barbershop leads and the mix of voices has a sweet bell like quality when they hit those ringing chords. They used the finest arrangers of the day such as Renee Craig, Al Rehkop (the tenor of the group), Mo Rector, Greg Backwell, Joni Bescos and Jarmela Speta to whom they pay tribute in song. You'll find twenty-six songs amassing seventy minutes of marvelous music on this recording.

Songlist: One of Those Songs, Back in the Old Routine, Shenandoah, Basin Street Blues, Irish Mother, Dames, Spiritual Medley, O My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, Try to Remember, Bacharach Medley, Me, She's Making Eyes At Me, Lucky Old Sun, Good Old Days, Just a Cottage Small, Al RehkopMy Wife the Dancer, Love Story, Ring Out the Bells in Dixieland, Hush, If You Love Me, Really Love Me , Everybody Loves a Lover, My Way, Fiddler Medley, How's Every Little Thing in Dixie?, Kansas City Star, I'll Be Seeing You, Big Brass Bed

As a result, the quartet performs a wide range of a cappella selections, including: doo-wop, gospel, swing, and their bread and butter, classic barbershop. At the recent Harmony Sweepstakes in Atlanta, InDEciSIon? won both the Championship, and the coveted "Audience Favorite Award." Their well blended voices, versatility of style and polished delivery are certain to win you over too. 12 great tracks including our favorites, "Undecided?" and "Basin Street Blues".

King Sisters : Queens Of Song : 00 1 CD : 348

King Sisters : Queens Of Song

The lovely King Sisters, hailing from Utah, were six in number, though the group usually featured four at a time, allowing for flexibility as family commitments encroached. Having been influenced by the Boswell Sisters, they sought fame and fortune in the early thirties, and began singing with bandleader Horace Heidt. Their success continued into the forties and fifties, as contemporaries of the Andrews and McGuire Sisters, and even into the 1960's, when they had their own television program, "The King Family Show." With their orchestra, conducted by Frank DeVol, the girls produced a slew of close harmony classics, from the wistful ballad, as in "The Day You Came Along" and "I Don't Know Why," to the cheerful "Cielito Linda," "You Made Me Love You" and "Pagan Love Song"; and who could forget "When The Swallows Came Back To Capistrano"? What a trip down memory lane!

Songlist: Memories of You, It's Easy to Remember, When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano, I May Be Wrong, Pagan Love Song, Miss Otis Regrets, I Don't Know Why, Cielito Linda, Basin Street Blues, The Day You Came Along, An Old Guitar and an Old Refrain, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Why Should I Cry Over You, You Made Me Love You, St. Louis Blues, I've Had My Moments, Stars Fell On Alabama, East of the Sun, By the River Sainte Marie, All Of Me, Love is the Thing, Don't Worry 'Bout Me, Stomping at TheSavoy

Masters Of Harmony : Showtime : 00 1 CD : Dr. Greg Lyne

Masters Of Harmony : Showtime

All American Barbershop ensemble singing at its finest, this chorus has some sort of compulsion to win gold medals in competition - four golds so far! "Showtime" has a Hollywood film medley and patriotic medley - both arranged by then-director Dr. Greg Lyne - as well as a line-up of barbershop "hits" that don't quit. "Let Me Call You Sweetheart," "Old St Louie," and "Basin St. Blues" (the latter featuring the Masters Of Dixieland Band, who will convert the most cantankerous skeptic to the virtues of the saxophone), are just a few. Though over 140 in number, the Masters nonetheless are as one voice, one breath.

Songlist: Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Floatin' Down to Cotton Town, Miss You, Old St. Louie, Basin Street Blues, The Mardi Gras March, Old Fashioned Girl in a Gingham Gown, Patriotic Medley, When Day Is Done / Mississippi Mud, Just a Closer Walk With Thee, I Believe, Hollywood Film Medley

Nightlife : Basin St Blues : 00 1 CD

Nightlife : Basin St Blues

Let us have Dr. Greg Lyne tell you about the voices of Nightlife. "Brett (Littlefield) possesses one of the most resonant, rich bass voices you're ever going to hear, which contributes to the depth so characteristic of the Nightlife sound. Jeff's (Baker) voice brings the glue and dignity to the composite sound that all outstanding quartets seek. John's (Sasine) voice is unusually free and agile, which is also the key to the quartet's individually of expression. Finally, it is the color and presence found in Rob's tenor voice that contributes the sheen to this foursome's distinctive sound." True, true. Now listen to "Creole Cutie," "Route 66," "Beautiful Dreamer" (beautiful!), "Smile" and another eleven songs. Celebrate their Championship with them!
