Sing some cool arrangements of the National anthem! Beginning with a beautiful unison, Tsunenori 'Lee' Abe's arrangement of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' goes into rich harmony without going too far away from the original. Mark Burnell's 'Star Spangled Banner' is an adventurous a cappella version as performed by Cooler by the Lake for the Chicago Bulls and White Sox. Kerry Marsh's 'Star Spangled Banner' uses some modal re-harmonization, some slight meter shifts and has a rousing finish, with some surprises. This chart sounds harder to sing than it is, as the voice leading is very logical and smooth but the chords are wonderful. Jason Heald's 'The Star-Spangled Banner' is a swinging version of the true "old standard". This is a very rhythmic a cappella SATB arrangement with a strong gospel feel. The chart opens with a soprano solo and concludes with bold sophisticated harmonies. A terrific opener or closer for any concert or event! America The Beautiful, by Mike Dana is a heartfelt arrangement set in a contemporary harmonic framework, and features brief solos for a soulful tenor, and after a modulation for the second verse, alto. You will note that the melody of the Banner is passed between the lead and bass sections to preserve the close harmony voicing in this rangy melody. Work to achieve choral balance such that the audience can hear and follow the melody. in the overlay to America the Beautiful, have a small group, or even the audence, sing the unison melody first. Next, have a chorus or quartet sing the overlay section alone. last time through, combine the two parts. Feel free to improvise harmonies in the tag section! Ames Children's Choir : All Things Pass   

The Concert Choir is one of three choirs in the Ames Children's Choirs (ACC) program founded by Artistic Director Munsen in Ames, Iowa in 1995. The Concert Choir has performed at John Rutter's Mass of the Children at Carnegie Hall, with the Des Moines Symphony for the World Food Prize, performed solo concerts in St. Patrick's Cathedral (NYC) and Washington's National Cathedral and performed at many conferences and festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada. Favorites among the 14 tunes (all accompanied on piano by Sue Lekwa) are: Bob Chilcott's title tune and "Can You Hear Me?," John Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth," E. Songs of patriotism and inspiration were always part of Fred Waring's broadcasts and stage shows. By popular request, Songs of Freedom was compiled from recordings in their collection. Selections include John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever," "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor" from Miss Liberty by Irving Berlin and "Battle Hymn Republic," which was made popular by Roy Ringwald's arrangement and won a gold record. Also included is Fred Waring's "love song for America," "My America." Waring wrote the song for his bicentennial shows in 1975.

Aurora is one of seven choral ensembles at Decorah, IA's Luther College, founded in 1981 and comprised of 100 first-year women, selected each fall by audition. Named Pike Kor from the mid-1980s until the spring of 2008 when the ensemble was renamed Aurora, latin for dawn. Aurora performs on and off-campus for worship services, participates in the annual Christmas at Luther concert, and presents a spring concert with The Norsemen. "Using Our Voices" is an 18-song collection, some are accompanied by piano, flute, and percussion. Founded in 1957, the MBC is one of the most prestigious all-male choirs, directed by Leonid Baklushin. The 138-strong, white-uniformed New Tradition Chorus was formed in 1982 as a performance and competition chorus, directed by Jay Giallombardo (who also does most of their arrangements), with the goal of becoming the best male chorus in the world. The Concert Chorus of the Southern California Children's Chorus gives a very joyous performance. Simple Gifts contains mostly sacred pieces for treble voices. This CD includes highlights from the 2004 Spring Concerts, recorded live at Manchester United Methodist Church on May 16, 2004. The Artistic Director remains Barbera Berner, who took on the position in 1996. 2004 was a greatyear for the SLCC, as they performed internationally and in venues such as The White House and Carnegie Hall.

This recording is a collection of folk songs and spirituals from America. The first three pieces are from Kirke Mechem's American Madrigals and are based on well known folk tunes. Other pieces include "I Can Tell the World," arranged by Moses Hogan, "How Can I Keep From Singing," arranged by Ronald Staheli and "America the Beautiful," arranged by Buryl Red. Led by Daniel Hughs, these songs and more are beautifully sung by the San Jose Choral Project.

Annabelle Cruz, founder and Director of Voena, her very special 56-strong international mixed choir boys and girls, ages 7 to 15. Based in Benicia, CA, "Voena" stands for "Voices of Eve 'N Angels" Annabelle encouraged the children, with multicultural backgrounds, to celebrate their unique sound, in the hope that they would become not just a choir but a family. They took off from there, singing 2 to 4-part harmonies, growing into doing song arranging and even composing. "A Cappella America" has 18 songs, featuring some excellent solos by young choir members. Some favorites: "Sweetly the Swan Sings," written by Annabelle, "God Bless America/My Country 'Tis Of Thee," "Children of Creation," with music by Annabella, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," the South African folk song "Singabahambayo," the traditional "Greensleeves," "America the Beautiful," "The Star Spangled Banner," "Simple Gifts, Shaker Hymn," Miriam Makeba's "Pata Pata," and Mozart's "The Magic Flute." Some accompaniment by Native Flute, percussion and fiddle. We find Voena's story inspirational, and their music beautiful and fine!

St. Paul, MN-based 3-woman, 2-man jazz quintet Voice Trek has a rich, clean, poised sound, and arrangements that can turn very familiar tunes like the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," Dave Brubeck's jazz anthem "Take Five," Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and Michel LeGrand's "Windmills of Your Mind" and turn them into new songs, unexpectedly tasty musical treats. There's a spirited, sassy cover of Rossini's "William Tell Overture" that would have the Swingles looking over their shoulders, Sinatra's "Fly Me To The Moon" becomes a (lightly accompanied) scattish, salsa romp, and Toto's "Rosanna" is a finger-snapping winner, as is Brazilian composer Manfredo Fest's energetic "That's What She Says." A bonus track, "America the Beautiful," was included "after the tremendous response from the a cappella community when they performed it at the West Coast Summit!" 11 songs, each a many-faceted gem. "An A cappella Trek," Voice Trek's 5th recording, is a joy from beginning to end, one of the best Vocal Jazz CDs we've heard this year!

A great patriotic set of songs from this top-notch Christian a cappella choir from Tennessee. The exquisite harmonies and quality of voices of The Voices of Lee is particularly suited for songs of this nature as their sound is both rousing and inspirational without being overpowering. We recommend this recording highly.

Southern California's hottest contemporary a cappella sextet, formed in 2001 to perform at Disney's California Adventure under the name "Groove 66," led by musical director and vocal arranger Deke Sharon. The band became the park's most popular atmosphere group, and performed every day at Disneyland for almost three years; now they exist primarily outside of Disney, making appearances on TV and radio, headlining on cruise ships, corporate events and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. We had the pleasure of watching and hearing Los Angeles-based Vybration's wonderful set at the Harmony Sweeps Finals, which won them 2nd place against a very strong field of Regional winners, and Best Original Arrangement for Sharon's arrangement of "Route 66." That finger-poppingly jazzy song is one of our favorites among the 12 songs here, other ones are the Eagles' "Fly Like an Eagle," a jazzy "Blue Skies," "Fly" medley, Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," Otis Redding's Bay Area anthem segueing into the Doo-Wop hit, "Dock of the Boardwalk" the Mamas and the Papa's iconic hit "California Dreamin', Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People," and "Disco Medley." Vybration's stage act was completely fun-these three men and three women obviously love what they do, and it adds up to great entertainment!

"Spirit of Freedom" has received critical acclaim in all the major publications (Fanfare, American Record Guide, etc.) Several of the tracks have been featured on a PBS series called "Freedom: A History of US." In addition, those same tracks have been featured on a soundtrack recording and companion anthology released by SONY records. Gothic's original recording "The Spirit of Freedom" is the best anthology available of patriotic songs and the only complete recording containing all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner.
