Founding Artistic Director and Conductor Matthew Culloton has an impressive resume, including being a member, Music Advisor, Assistant Conductor and Bass Section Leader of the Dale Warland Singers. Mormon Tabernacle Choir : Songs of the Civil War & Stephen Foster Favorites

Review: The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, accompanied by the huge Tabernacle organ, bring us some beautifully sung, authentic Civil War songs. We learned some of these songs in elementary school, and remember being touched by their poignancy, at the same time appalled to learn of the bloody slaughter. Soldiers on both sides marched off to songs like "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp," "The Bonnie Blue Flag," "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Dixie" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," but it's the songs like "He's Gone Away," "Tenting On The Old Camp Ground," "Aura Lee," "Lorena," "Kathleen Mavourneen," "Sweet Evelina," "Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child" and the sadly unincluded "One Vacant Chair" that tell the real, heartbreaking story of the war. We're then cheered up, however, by 9 Stephen Foster "pop" tunes, the joyous "Ring De Banjo," "Oh! Susanna," "The Glendy Burk," "Beautiful Dreamer," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," "Nellie Bly" and others. A powerful collection from the magnificent MTC.

Songlist: Tramp, Tramp, Tramp , Aura Lee , The Bonnie Blue Flag , He's Gone Away, The Battle Cry of Freedom , Lorena , The Battle Hymn of the Republic , Tenting on the Old Camp Ground , Sweet Evelina, I Wish I Was In Dixie , Kathleen Mavourneen , Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child , When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Mormon Tabernacle Choir : When You Wish Upon A Star

Review: "America's Choir" began their musical journey in 1847, singing hymns and sacred music, accompanied by the massive Tabernacle organ. These 360 singers, accompanied by an 110-strong orchestra, have in recent years, lent their magnificent sound to recordings of patriotic music, tunes from Broadway musicals and now a musical tribute to master cartoon and movie creator Walt Disney. These 10 songs, from "When You Wish Upon a Star"/"Hi Diddle-Dee-Dee" medley and "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" to "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah," "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and "Some Day My Prince Will Come," are as beautifully arranged and sung as we have every heard them. Listen to "Whistle While You Work"/Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho!" medley, and we are taken back to all the joy and amazement we felt when we first experienced "Snow White," Disney's first animated feature. "Star" is a nostalgic, touching winner from beginning to end!

Morten Lauridsen : Northwest Journey

Review: Morten Lauridsen has become one of America's most widely performed composers. His "O Magnum Mysterium" has been performed thousands of times since the 1994 premiere by Maestro Paul Salamunovich and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. With "Dirait-on" these two works are the all time best selling choral octavos distributed by Theodore Presser, in business since 1783! Northwest Journey features world premiere recordings of art songs, choral works and chamber music featuring superb musicians and vocalists. This musical offering spans the range of Morten's work. "Where Have the Actors Gone" gives one the sense of an allegorical ending to a relationship which might be found in a stage setting of musical theatre. From his beloved choral set, "The Songs of the Roses," comes a new arrangement of "Dirait-on" written for vocal duet. There is the unaccompanied motet, "Ubi Caritas et Amour." "A Winter Come" deftly takes the imagery of Howard Moss's verse and presents it in a marvelous variety of moods using amazing piano composition to accompany the soprano voice. Garcia Lorca's poetry is presented in the musical setting of the "Cuatro Canciones," each song based on a wider interval than the previous. And then we arrive at the finale, a new arrangement of the beautiful "O Magnum Mysterium" which presents the power of the original choral version carefully preserved in this premiere recording for solo voice. Wonderful!

Songlist: Where Have the Actors Gone, Dirait-On, Ubi Caritas et Amor, A Winter Come, Variaions, Madrigali, Cuatro Canciones, O Magnum Mysterium

Moses Hogan Singers : Lift Every Voice for Freedom

Review: Moses Hogan is of course a pianist, conductor and arranger of international renown, and this is a CD for lovers of America. Moses plays piano with the Singers, which is the only accompaniment, except for Kelvin Harrison's saxophone on the final cut, "Let America Be America Again," for the '95 PBS documentary "The American Promise." The strong composing hand of Moses is evident on all 16 songs, from the title tune, "Shenandoah," "Like A Mighty Stream," "America The Beautiful" and "The Star-Spangled Banner" to "Amazing Grace," "Common Dust," the spirituals "Keep Your Lamps," "All My Trials," "If You Come Softly," "Grass Roots" and "This Is My Country." Interspersed are inspiring words and poems. A work of rare beauty and power!

Mt. San Antonio College : Horizons

Review: During the past 12 years since its founding by Music Director Bruce Rogers, the 52-strong, mixed-voice Mt. Sac Chamber Singers has been extremely active, winning a variety of awards, accepting invitations to appear at numbers ACDA conventions, a special guest appearance at Carnegie Hall, and winning numerous first place honors throughout Europe at International choral competitions. "Horizons" features 16 songs, with some drum and piano accompaniment. Favorites are the powerful, rhythmic "Annua gaudia," Wm. Byrd's lovely a cappella "Laudibus in sanctis," Maurice Hauptmann's lively "Zigeunerlied," Peter Louis Van Dijk's dramatic, rhythmic, surprising title tune, Z. Randall Stroope's manic, driving "The Conversion of Saul," Jan Magne Forde's delicate "Bruremarsj," Brahms' soaring "Waldesnacht, du Wunderkuhle," and Jiri Laburda's ringing "Isli tri panenky." These are eclectic, often difficult tunes to perform, usually only selected if your ensemble has the vocal chops to actually handle them. The Mt. Sac Chamber Singers is one of those rare groups, which is why they are beloved by audiences and judges alike!

Mt. San Antonio College : Hosanna

Review: For an auditioned group of 32 mixed-voice student singers founded only 12 years ago by Music Director Bruce Roberts, the Mt. Sac Chamber singers has been very busy. In addition to appearances at ACDA conventions, the group won first place honors at International Competitions in Wales, and the "Grand Prix" prize for best choir in Varna, Bulgaria. "Hosanna" has 16 impressive selections, Alessandro Scarlatti's "Exsultate Deo," Palestrina's "Super flumina Babylonis," the title tune by Brent Pierce, Lauridsen's "Amor, io sento L'alma," "God Be In My Head," Brahms' lovely "Neckerien," Eric Whitacre's "Sleep," Stephen Hatfield's rhythmic, joyous "Son de Camaguey" and Moses Hogan's wonderful "Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel." This is not an easy repertoire to perform, and even harder to perform as beautifully and effortlessly as the Mt. Sac Chamber Singers do here. Great choral music by one of America's best vocal ensembles!

Musica Intima : Into Light

Review: 12-strong, mixed-voice Canadian a cappella ensemble Musica Intima was inspired to record "into light" after performing at the Pollyfollia festival in France in 2006, where, to their delight, the Canadian choral works they had always performed and commissioned were very well received and admired. The album is a 14 song celebration of original compositions by Canadian composers, some favorites are Imant Raminsh's "Ave Verum Corpus," R. Musikanten : Sacred Choral Music of Robert Evett

Review: Robert Evett (1922-1975) was a highly esteemed American composer who was a major contributor to the cultural life of Washington, DC. A student of Roy Harris and Vincent Persichetti, Evett was nominated for Pulitzer prizes not only in music but also for his literary contributions: he was critic and editor for the New Republic, Atlantic Monthly and Washington Star. Evett composed in many genres, including orchestral and chamber music. His devout and personal choral pieces for the Catholic liturgy are undiscovered gems that deserve a wide hearing, not just on Sundays. The works on this disc, some a cappella, some with organ accompaniment, span music for Christmas and Lent, as well as the daily offices of Prime, Vespers and Compline. Masterfully sung by the 19 voices of Musikanten, the oldest choral chamber ensemble in the nation's capital, the music is given sublime interpretations in the warm environment of the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Bethesda, MD. Conductor and founder of the group, Kerry Krebill, directs the expressive and precise performances that led Musikanten's previous CD to be nominated Choral CD of the Year by Chorus! Magazine.

Songlist: Prime, What An Attractive Thing Is Judgment, Propers for the Second Sunday in Lent, Propers for the First Mass of Christmas, Vespers, Four Marian Antiphons, Compline

Muungano National Choir : Mateso!

Review: Muungano has been aptly described as "Emissaries of Kenyan Culture," and has just completed a remarkable third tour of the US. The 30-strong, mixed-voice Choir creates a powerful, rhythmic, infectious sound with sweet, powerful solos. Some light percussion accompaniment, but the emphasis is on these amazing voices and harmonies. 13 songs, some favorites are the title tune, "Maina," "Wanamichezo," "Malaika," "Niwaro Nono," "Bhazo" (a South African freedom song), "Selena," "Msichana Mrembo," and "Sikuta," but there's really not a weak or uninteresting cut here. The authentic rhythms and joyful singing flow like an African river throughout "Mateso!"

Songlist: Mateso, Maina, Musher Mwene, Wanamichesos, Bwana Kote Ninakotazama, Malaika, Niwara nono, Bhazo, Ekebwe, Selina, Ngulo, Msichana Mrembo, Sikuta, Mateso (Reprise)

National Lutheran Choir : A New Song

Review: The professional choral musicians of the National Lutheran Choir, selected by auditions held each May, are drawn from a 200-mile radius of Minneapolis/St. Paul for weekly rehearsals, and they represent the various Lutheran Church colleges and universities who have provided their undergraduate musical education. They perform literature from the entire spectrum of sacred choral works, all a cappella. A New Song, conducted by Larry L. Fleming, "A New Song" is an eclectic, varied collection of sacred music not often heard or performed. Richard Feliciano's dramatic and brooding "I Will Sing to the Lord" and "My Friend Had a Vineyard" set the tone for the collection, as does Eskil Hemberg's dissonant, eclectic "Signpost I." Darius Milhard's "Psalm 150" soars and surprises, Samuel Berber's "Lamb of God," George Oldroyd's "Prayer to Jesus," Durufle's "Ubi Caritas," Mark Gresham's "Set Me a Seal" and Kenneth Jennings' "Spirit of God" are sweet and lovely; Igor Stravinski's "The Dove Descending," Edmund Rubra's "Hymne to God" and Normand Lockwood's "Inscription from the Catacombs" have hauntingly dissonant harmonies. Each of these is a difficult-to-perform, rarely-heard gem, beautifully done by one of the world's most respected Christian choirs.

Songlist: I Will Sing To The Lord , My Friend Had A Vineyard, Jerusalem, Signpost I, Sixty-Seventh Psalm, Psalm 150, Thee Will I love , Priere, Lamb Of God , Prayer To Jesus , Ubi Caritas, Whither Shall I Go , O Vos Omnes, The Dove Descending , Sprirt Of God , Set Me As A Seal, Hymn To God, Inscription From The Catacombs, Our Father

National Lutheran Choir : Hymns We Love to Sing, Vol. II

Review: Artistic Director David Cherwien, conductor, organist and pianist, leads the Minneapolis, MN-based National Lutheran Choir in this live, organ and piano-accompanied collection of 13 joyous hymns. We are clearly invited to sing this triumphant music along with the Choir, as the liner notes feature the lyrics of all the songs in unusually large type; with very little about the size, history or details about the Choir or Director Cherwein. It's all about the music, about the power and faith of this great American Choir. Some favorites are "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Down in the River to Pray," "Steal Away," "Standin' in the Need of Prayer," "When Peace Like A River" and "Holy God, We Praise Your Name." A quote on the back of the liner notes says in part, "Joyful music leads us sunward. In the triumph song of life. Stars and angels sing around thee, Center of unbroken praise" "Hymns We Love to Sing, Vol. II" is by a wonderful Choir that loves to sing joyous praises to God, and they invite us to join them!

Songlist: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, The King Of Love My Shepherd Is, Angels We Have Heard On High, Down In The River To Pray, O Sacred Head, Now Wounded, Alleluia! Christ Is Arisen, Steal Away, O Blessed Spring, Standin' In The Need Of Prayer, You Are Holy, I Want Jesus To Walk With Me, When Peace Like A River, Holy God, We Praise Your Name

National Lutheran Choir : Soul

Review: "Soul" is a wonderful collection of Folk and Gospel Hymns and Spiritual Songs performed by Minneapolis/St. Paul's great professional choir. Conductor Larry L. Fleming arranges many of these tunes, and contributes one of his own compositions, the lovely, upbeat "Go and Tell John." "Three About Jesus:" "Every Time I Think About Jesus," "Give Me Jesus" and "Ride On, King Jesus" are particularly fine, as is the Paul Christiansen-arranged "My Song in the Night." The rousing spirituals "Saints Bound for Heaven" and "In That Great Getting' Up Mornin'" are marvelous. The final piece, the 9-part medley "River Suite," (piano accompanied and featuring outstanding vocalist Tom Tipton) is incredible enough by itself to gain our recommendation for "Soul." Another inspiring, finely-crafted winner from one of America's finest choirs!

Songlist: My God (Eli) , Go And Tell John - Larry L. Fleming- Larry L. Fleming, There Is A Balm Three About Jesus - Larry L. Fleming, Every Time I Think About Jesus - Larry L. Fleming, Give Me Jesus, Ride On, King Jesus, My Song In The Night, Saints Bound, My Soul - Jesus Loves Me , I Will Arise - Larry L. Fleming, Gettin' Up Mornin' , My Lord, What A Mornin', River Suite

Netherlands Chamber Choir : Darius Milhaud Choral Works

Review: The acclaimed Stephen Layton guest directs the choir on the works of Darius Milhaud (1892 - 1974). French composer Darius Milhaud belongs to the 1920s Jazz Age. A member of the famous French group of composers Le Six, he is best known for his ballet Le Boeuf sur le Toit (The Ox on the Roof'). He favoured bi-tonality, often used by Les Six. Milhaud was a part of the post World War I scene, after the late Romantic or 'impressionistic' styles of Debussy and even Stravinsky. Milhaud was fond of jazz and the Latin American rhythms.

Netherlands Chamber Choir : Hindemith Choral Works for a Cappella Chorus

Review: Hindemith is among the most significant German composers of his time. His early works are in a late romantic idiom, and he later produced expressionist works, rather in the style of early Arnold Schoenberg, before developing a leaner, contrapuntally complex style in the 1920s. This style has been described as neoclassical, but is very different from the works by Igor Stravinsky labeled with that term, owing more to the contrapuntal language of Bach than the Classical clarity of Mozart.

Songlist: Six Chansons nach Rilke - La Biche, Un Cygne, Puisque tout passe, Printemps, En Hiver, Verger, Eine lichte Mitternacht, Du mubt dir Alles geben, Der Tod, Nun da der Tag, Mitwelt, Tauche deine Furcht, Trink aus, Fruhling, Judaskuss, Du Zweifel, Mass for mixed chorus - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnes Dei

Netherlands Chamber Choir : Hugo Distler

Review: Because so much emphasis is currently placed upon the fate of Jewish composers under the Nazis, it is easy to forget that there were some German musicians who also suffered as a result of the repressive policies of the regime. Among those that can be singled out in this respect is Hugo Distler, a highly talented church organist and choral conductor who committed suicide at the age of 34 in 1942, on learning that he had been called up for military service. The two large-scale works presented here offer typical examples of the so-called Orgelbewegung style drawing their inspiration from Bach in the trenchant use of chorale and Schutz in the density of polyphonic argument. It's a tribute to Distler's mastery and the outstanding singing of the Netherlands Chamber Choir that despite this obvious musical provenance, both works strike an individual voice and sustain one's interest without the textural variety of an instrumental accompaniment.

Songlist: Totentanz, Spruchmotetten zum Totensonntag, Choral-Passion, Op. 7, Erster Teil: Der Einzug, Zweiter Teil: Judas und der Pharisaer Rat, Dritter Teil: Das Abendmahl, Vierter Teil: Gethsemane, Funfter Teil: Kaiphas, Sechster Teil: Pilatus, Letzter Teil: Golgotha

Netherlands Chamber Choir : Rudolf Escher - Choral Works

Review: Rudolf Escher was a teacher and writer of music, a painter and poet as well as a composer. As a result he was very aware of the connection between text and music, which also came from his love of Renaissance choral music. His writing style was such that it defied classification with his use of polymelody, antimetric rhythm and chromatic harmonies. The pieces presented on this CD are the complete a cappella choral works by Escher. In the set "Songs of Love and Eternity" with poems by Emily Dickinson, Escher brings out the very dramatic images of nature in the text. Escher's music is considered extremely difficult. The first performance of "Songs of Love" was postponed twelve years after its completion. Under the direction of Ed Spanjaard, the Netherlands Chamber Choir makes it seem and sound easy. Much of the revered music from the Netherlands comes from the Renaissance period. Escher should, as well, be put on this list.

Songlist: Songs of Love and Eternity (1955), (Text: Emily Dickinson 1830-1886), - These are the days when birds come back, - Wild nights!, - Heart, we will forget him!, - The wind tapped like a tired man, - To make a prairie it take s clover, From: Poems, first and second series, (Text: Emily Dickinson), - I taste a liquor never brewed (1955), From: Le vrai visage de la paix par Picasso et Eluard, (Text: Paul Eluard 1895-1952), - Le vrai visage de la paix (1953, rev. 1957), Ciel air et vents (1957), (Text: Pierre de Ronsard 1524-1588), - Ode, - Chanson, - Sonnet, Three poems by W.H. Auden (1975), (Text: William H. Auden 1907-1973), - If I could tell you, - A curse, - Warm are the sill and lucky miles
