Review: During the past 6 decades of its existence, the AB has performed in more than 2,500 North American cities and towns, and in Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and South America. More than 80 boys, ages 10 to 14, all students at the American Boychoir School in Princeton, NJ, are the nucleus from which the two concert Boychoirs are selected. Aurelius Boys' Choir : German Folk Songs

Review: Aurelius Sangerknaben Calw (ASKC) (Aurelius Boys' Choir, Calw), was founded in 1983 by Hans-Jorg Kalmbach, who continues to direct and decisively shape its activities to the present day (2001). From simple beginnings the choir has become a much-requested bod of singers capable of both choral and solo duties. Work with famous conductors and orchestras became increasingly important during the 1990s, as the group appeared with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony and even the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Delighting their audiences in radio, tv and CD appearances, the ASKC brings us here a lovely collection of traditional and classical music, some accompanied, and all sung in German. We particularly enjoyed the title tune, the sweet a cappella "Heimlich Liebe," "Es klappert die Muhle," "Kein schoner Land," "Wurttemberger Hymne," the rich a cappella tune "Untreue," "All mein Gedanken," "Der Lindenbaum"- we could go on and on. A beautifully-sung collection of classic tunes from one of Germany's finest boy choirs.

Songlist: Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen, Kein schoner Land, Wurttemberger hymne, Heidenroslein, Heimliche Liebe, Es klappert die Muhle, Im schonsten Wiesengrunde, Untrue, Jenseits des Tales, Annchen von Tharau, Die Gedanken sind frei, Horch, was kommt von draussen rein, Es steht eine Muhle im Schwarzwaldertal, Auf de schwab'sche Eisebahne, Mein eigen soll sie sein, All mein Gedanken, Guter Mond, du geshst so stille, Der Lindenbaum, Nehmt Abschied Bruder Muss I den, Nehmt Abschied Bruder Muss I denn

Boys Choir Of Harlem : Precious Lord....Take My Hand

Review: Harlem's finest, and one of America's finest boys' choirs, brings us a powerful collection of 14 authentic spirituals. The arrangements are by some of the best in the world. "Everytime I Feel the Spirit," "Go Down Moses," "Little David Play On Your Harp," "Ride On King Jesus" and "I Can Tell the World," all arranged by Moses Hogan, "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," arranged by William Dawson, "If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride," arranged by Robert Shaw, and a pair arranged by Howard Roberts, "Kumbaya My Lord" and "Oh Freedom," are a few of many favorites. Some light piano accompaniment, like on the lovely Don Sebesky-arranged "Amazing Grace," but mostly sweet, spirited a cappella. "Precious Lord" is inspirational and moving on many levels, given the accomplishments of Executive Producer J. Walter Turnbull and many others, molding and teaching the talented children of Harlem.

Songlist: Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit, Go Down Moses, Children, Go Where I send Thee, Little David, Play On Your Harp, Ride On, King Jesus, Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, I've Been Buked, If I Got My Ticket, Can I Ride, Mary Was the Queen of Galilee, Amazing Grace, I Can Tell The World, Precious World, Kumbaya My Lord, Oh Freedom

Dresden Boys' Choir : Romantic Choral Music

Review: With a tradition going back to the 13th century this highly regarded boyschoir, with its full compliment of 120 voices is ideally suited to large scale compositions. The accoustics of the Kreuzirche contribute to a romantic sound even when the emphasis is on transparency, subtly shading of expression and clarity of articulation. Apart from sacred composistions by Johannes Bach, Asnton Buckner and Max Reger, all masterpieces of romantic choral music, this program also includes some lesser-known composers. Among them are Heinrich Kaminski, director of the Berlin Choir, whose works were banned by the Nazis.

Songlist: Unser lieben Frauen Traum (Und unser lieben Frauen), Locus iste in C major, Ave Maria for Chorus, Wie liegt die Stadt so wust, Psalm 130, Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille, Erquicke mich mit deinem Licht, Motets (2), Op. 74: no 1, Warum ist das Licht gegeben, Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen uber dir, O Vos Omnes, Herr Christ, der einig Gottes sohn, Erquicke mich mit deinem Licht, Schonster Herr Jesu / Darum sage ich euch, Nachtlied (Die Nacht ist kommen)

Dresden Boys' Choir : Schutz, Psalms of David

Review: Psalm recitals played a large role in Schutz's composing life, and the reason the Psalms of David play such a significant part in the repertoire of the boys' choir of the Dresden Kreuzkirche is the spiritual and stylistic wealth of works, which can be plumbed for so many solemn or joyful occasions. To imagine the Dresden Kreuzchor without the music of Heinrich Schutz is all but impossible in this day and age. Though Schutz was himself never a choirboy there, his oeuvre represents the most significant and long-lasting contribution to the repertoire of this boys' choir, which looks back on a musical tradition of more than 700 years.

Dresden Boys' Choir : Sings Folksongs

Review: The songs on this recording rangs from simple numbers like " Gluck auf!" (the miners call of good luck) and " Der Mond ist aufgegangen" (the moon has risen) to variant forms with astringent harmonies, like Max Reger's " Bald gras ich am Neckar". The artful polyphony of " Es geht ein dunkle Wolk" in the setting by Hugo Distler and in Ludwig Senff's "Entlaubet ist der Walde" also shows how fruitfully composers of various periods have engaged themselves with folk songs. Beautifully sung, well recorded, all a cappella.

Songlist: Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen, Die wilden Schwane, Feinsliebchen, Tritt zu! (Wenn alle Brunnlein flieben), Ach Elslein, liebes Elselein, Es waren zwei Konigskinder, Ich hort ein Sichelein rauschen, Bruderlein fein, Es fuhrt uber den Main, Gluck auf, Gluck auf!, Aus grauer Stadte Mauern, Aus grauer Stadte Mauern, An der Saale hellem Strande, Das Ringlein (Bald gras ich am Neckar), Lieb Heimatland, ade, Es geht ein dunkle Wolk, Nr. 3: Es fiel ein Reif in der Fruhlingsnacht, Im Mai op. 47 Nr. 1, Fruhlingsgrub, Nr. 2: Die Primel, Im schonsten Wiesengrunde, Entlaubet ist der Walde, Sandmannchen (Die Blumelein, sie schlafen), Verstohlen geht der Mond auf, Der Mond ist aufgegangen

Knabenchor Capella Vocalis : Cantate Domino

Review: Musical and artistic success depends to a great degree on the ability of all those involved to work together harmoniously, in every sense of the word. At the same time, the diversity and individuality of each member of an ensemble needs to be taken into account and nurtured. These are the guidelines which the founder of the boys' choir and present choir director of capella vocalis, Eckhard Weyand, has adopted. The success of his concept is demonstrated by numerous concerts both at home and abroad and the way in which the choir has rapidly built up a reputation since it was founded. Following on the success of the ensemble's debut "Kein schoner Land" here is their latest release featuring this top-notch boys' choir singing sacred choral works

Knabenchor Capella Vocalis : Christ ist Geboren

Review: Founded in 1992 and not associated with any religion or institution, Holzgerlingen, Germany-based Capella Vocalis performs religious and secular music in churches as well as in other venues. Land of Lakes Choirboys : Steal Away

Review: "Steal Away" is wonderful collection of sacred and spiritual tunes, from the Viking Choir, the national and international touring choir and one of 6 choirs of different levels that form the renowned Land of Lakes Choirboys. But all the other tunes, piano and organ accompanied, are equally lovely. A beautiful collection!

Les Choristes : Les Choristes Soundtrack

Review: This is from the soundtrack of "The Chorus" (Les Choristes) starring Jacques Perrin and Gerard Jugnot. The movie uses a "Dead Poets Society" formula, where a teacher, Clement Mathieu (played by Jugnot) goes to a poverty-stricken French boarding school in 1949, where troubled boys don't like him, but he ends up, through music, winning their hearts and teaching them about life. The music they perform is excellent (actually dubbed by "Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc," a professional chorus directed by Nicolas Porte), ranging from the kids' songs mocking the teachers, to original songs Mathieu wrote (like the Oscar-nominated "Look To Your Path" ("Vois Sur Ton Chemin") to well-known songs by famous authors. There are 21 songs, most accompanied, and some cuts are all dramatically instrumental, like "Pepinot" and "Les Partitions." The a cappella "La Nuit," "Caresse sur l'Ocean," "Lueur d'Ete," "Cerf-Volant," "La Desillusion," "Action Reaction," and "In Memoriam A Cappella." "Nous sommes de Fond de l'Etang" is an a cappella scene from the movie about Mathieu's initial efforts to teach the boys. The colorful liner notes have wonderful movie stills, and translate the songs line for line. This is fun stuff that makes us want to see the film!

Songlist: Les Choristes, In memoriam, L'Arrivee a l'Ecole, Pepinot, Vois sur ton Chemin, Les Partitions, Caresse sur l'Ocean, Lueur d'Ete, Cerf-Volant, Sous la Pluie, Compere Guilleri, La Desillusion, La Nuit, L'Incendie, L'Evocation, Les Avions en Papier, Action Reaction, Seuls, Morhange, In Memoriam A cappella, Nous sommes de Fond de l'Etang

Libera : Angel Voices

Review: The beautiful full-color liner notes of "Angel Voices" fold out to show us a panoramic portrait of white-clad boy singers, ages 7 to 14, members of renowned 23-voice, South London-based boy's choir, Libera. Libera's repertoire is wide, from classical and cathedral pieces to works for pop and media productions. The backlit photo makes the boys appear to be angels, and that impression is not at all diminished by the sweetly soaring music. "Far Away," "Sanctus" (based on Pachelbel's "Canon"), "Ave Maria," the touching "Going Home" (based on Dvorak's "From the New World"), the lovely hymn "Be Still My Soul," the stunning "Salva Me," "I Vow to Thee, My Country," "Voca Me," the poignant, "Always with You," "We Are the Lost," the marvelous "I Am the Day" and "Recordare" are favorites, but all 15 light-to-heavily-accompanied tunes are very fine. Pure soprano leads and harmonies, a touching, well-chosen song selection - "Voices" is a choral treat that lifts us up from the earthbound mundane to the bright, clear, rarified air of angels.

Songlist: Far Away, Sanctus, Ave Maria, Going Home, Be Still My Soul, Salva Me, I Vow To Thee My Country, Voca Me, Always With You, We Are The Lost, I Am The Day, Recordare, Abide With Me, Silent Night, Going Home

Libera : Free

Review: Libera's latest chart-topping album 'Free' has an alluring atmosphere of its own, with Libera sublimely blending traditional hymns, plainsong and modern compositions that instill an incredible tranquility and freedom that awakens the soul. Soaring high notes, entrancing voices, blissful harmonies, ethereal sounds and striking chords are the essence of Libera Robert Prizeman composed the songs unearthing and developing the natural vocal characteristics of each of the boys, both as part of the ensemble and as soloists. Along with its predecessors, 'Free' has a global appeal that transcends all others.

Songlist: I am the day, Stay with me, Voca me, A song of enchantment, Ave verum, Do not stand at my gate, When a knight, A new heaven, I vow to thee my country, Lament, Twilight, Be still my soul, Adoramus

Libera : In Concert

Review: Libera, the South London choral group of boys aged 9 to 15, brings a uniquely mystical and transcendent sound to their first live concert recording. Robert Prizeman, founder, arranger and director of Libera, has taken the simple purity of boys' voices and, with great care and respect for classical vocal tradition, has created a new sound. To hear them do it live is a real treat as Prizeman knows exactly what to feature about a boy's voice and how to blend textures, creating an etheral sound that envelops you. Excellent musicality, and the choir has such confidence.

Songlist: Adoramus, Going Home, Far Away, Prayer, Libera, Sanctus, Salva Me, Lacrymosa, Abide With Me, I Vow to Thee My Country, Stay With Me, Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep, I Am The Day

Libera : Libera

Review: This recording, combines sacred texts, familiar tunes and a choir and fuses it with new age and techno styles. The Sanctus is arranged from Pachelbel's Canon and Te Lucis uses the Canon by Tallis. The texts were adapted from the Latin Mass, Requiem, Stabat Mater, Compline and the Psalms. The pure and perfectly blended sound of Libera adds depth to this music. Composer Robert Prizeman, who is also Libera's director, has created a whirlpool of sound, which attempts to create a freedom of the mind.

Songlist: Salva Me, Sanctus, Agnus Dei , Libera, Mysterium, Jubilate, Beata lux, Dies Irae, Te Lucis , Sancta, Angelis, Lux Aeterna

Libera : Luminosa

Review: A beautiful swan extends its wing against a pastel blue background on the cover of "Luminosa," and it sets the mood for the first cut, "Vespera," which begins with a Gregorian-type chant, picks up soaring synthesizer and sweet soprano harmonies, and returns to one of the loveliest solos we've heard. This is sacred choral music crossing over into New Age, the Leslie Garrett Show is big in England, and so is Libera who has had several highly successful songs in the British charts. There is a picture of the group in the center of the liner notes, 13 young boys, probably 6 to 8 years old, dressed casually, hanging out with each other. There are 12 songs here, occaisionally accompanied, but the focus is on the amazing, perfect voices of the boys. On "Ave Maria" (based on Ave Maria by Caccini), "Lacrymosa" (based on Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens), "Sacris Solemnis" (based on Symphony No. 7: Allegretto by Beethoven) and "Semele" (from Semele by Handel), we hear these classical pieces in a new light. The title tune, based on "Clair de Lune" by Debussy, is a haunting, dreamy masterpiece, "Stabat" beautifully continues the mood, as does "Veni Sancte" and the final cut, "Sanctus II," based on Pachelbel's "Canon." Highly recommended and simply lovely throughout.

Songlist: Vespera, Lacrymosa, Sacris Solemnis, Attendite, Gaudete, Silencium, Semele, Luminosa, Stabat, Veni Sancte, Sanctus II, Ave Maria

Libera : New Dawn

Review: Enya's Orinoco Flow and Bach's Air on a G string; the disc also includes a track penned by Brian Wilson called 'Love and Mercy'. This is the song Libera performed to a star-studded audience in Washington DC before Christmas at the Kennedy Centre Honours, an audience which included President Bush, Robert De Niro, Cameron Diaz and Brian Wilson himself. The talented singers of Libera come from a variety of different schools and backgrounds in London and join together at a church in South London where they rehearse and perform for many hours each week. The youngest is seven and the oldest members are fourteen. Alongside their unique Libera music, the boy singers enjoy a wide repertoire from classical and cathedral pieces to works for pop and media productions. In recent years they have sung on films like 'Romeo & Juliet' and 'Hannibal' and with singers like Bjork, Elton John & Pavarotti. Libera is directed by Robert Prizeman, the well respected musical advisor to the BBC religious TV programme Songs of Praise. Robert arranges, if not writes all of the music that Libera perform. Sales of Libera's albums worldwide are now over 300,000 and the boys have a strong following of fans.

Libera : The Christmas Album

Review: Libera is as close as a boyschoir could ever be to be called a pop sensation but in a way that's exactly what this group is. With millions of CDs sold and touring world wide this ensemble has taken choral music to whole new audiences to great success. The singers of Libera who are aged seven to sixteen attend many different local schools in South London and come from a variety of backgrounds. Although they are boys and they sing, they do not think of themselves as choirboys, but rather as an alternative kind of boy band. This Christmas release, their first holiday album, is superb and you will listen to this recording season after season.

Songlist: Joy to the World, Still, still, still, Carol of the Bells, Veni, Veni Emmanuel, Once in Royal David's City, O Holy Night, White Christmas, Corpus Christi Carol, In Dulci Jubilo, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Sing the Story, Coventry Carol, The First Nowell, Jubilate Deo, While Shepherds watched their Flocks, Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)

Libera : Visions

Review: The twenty-four boys aged seven to sixteen who make up the vocal band Libera, and who meet several hours each week at a church in South London to rehearse and perform, have been described as "normal" and "ordinary". However, as their new EMI CD amply demonstrates, the music the produce is truly extraordinary. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard. Of the twelve tracks on Visions, Libera's second album for EMI Classics, a few will sound familiar, including Locus Iste, which is based on the well-known Pachelbel Canon, the hymn Abide with me, and Ave Maria. The remaining tracks are entirely original, with titles like New Day, Sing for ever and Something sings. The singers of Libera attend local primary schools and come from a variety of backgrounds. Although they are boys and they sing, they do not think of themselves as choirboys, but rather as an alternative kind of boy band. While the unique sound of Libera may be impossible to pigeonhole, its universal appeal has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the US, the UK, Korea and Japan, where their previous CDs have topped the mainstream and classical charts.

Songlist: Locus Iste (Sanctus), Always With You, Ave Maria, Libera, Sempiterna, Prayer, Recordare, Wings Of A Dove, Something Sings, New Day, We Are The Lost, Sing Forever, Abide With Me
