Eric Ericson Chamber Choir / Swedish Radio Choir : Swedish Contemporary Vocal Music Vol 2

Review: Texture and dynamics are among Eric Ericson's main tools for this Volume 2 of contemporary Swedish choral music. Sven-Erik Back, Lars Edlund, Miklos Maros and Arne Mellnas are presented - that is to say, some of our most eminent composers, represented by works of which several are classics already. "A superb presentation of the current high standard of Swedish choral music" was one reviewer's verdict.

Songlist: Natten ar framskriden (Back), Jesus tank pa mig, Morkret skall skilja, Gloria (Edlund), Elegi, Nenia, Succsim (Mellnas), Dream, Turba (Maros)

Esoterics : Antiphonia - Masterpieces for double chorus

Review: ANTIPHONIA captures the acclaimed program that The Esoterics reprised in Seattle, Portland, Tacoma and Everett in November 1999. ANTIPHONIA consists of six choral masterpieces, each from a different nationality - Swedish and Swiss, Finnish, and French, British and American - and each with a unique rendition of antiphony (from the Greek antiphon, "singing across"). The Seattle Post-Intelligencer deemed The Esoterics' performance of ANTIPHONIA a "triumph" and a program "as difficult as any have undertaken." The journal 21st Century Music praised the sound of the group as "sublime, pure, luxuriant, velvety ... The initial phrases gave me chills; it was as if angels were singing."

Songlist: Kyrie- Messe pour double choeur, Gloria - Messe pour double choeur, Credo - Messe pour double choeur, Sanctus - Messe pour double choeur, Agnus Dei - Messe pour double choeur, Ancient Roses - Echoes from the Heart, Longing, Dreaming - Echoes from the Heart, I Remember - Echoes from the Heart, Cantico del sole, ...a riveder le stelle, Bientot - Figure humaine, Le role de femmes - Figure humaine, Aussi bas que le silence - Figure humaine, Patience - Figure humaine, Premiere marche la voix d'un autre - Figure humaine, Un loup - Figure humaine, Un feu sans tache - Figure humaine, Liberte - Figure humaine, Pseudo-yoik , Antics

Esoterics : Barber - Collected Choral Works

Review: This recording was made in conjunction with The Esoterics' centennial concert of the same name, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the American composer Samuel Barber. This is the first recording by an American choral ensemble to feature all of Barber's works for a cappella chorus. Barber is one of the most important figures in American composition, having twice won the Pulitzer Prize. Purchase your copy of this historic recording by one of the country's premiere vocal ensembles for contemporary choral music! This recording, made in the lush acoustics of Seattle's Holy Rosary Catholic Church, is the first recording to bring together God's grandeur and Motetto on words from the book of Job, which Barber had intended to be performed as a single cycle. Also included in this recording are three choral works that are normally performed with instruments (Easter chorale, A stopwatch and an ordnance map, and Sure on this shining night). For these three pieces, the ensemble sings the instrumental parts (for brass, timpani and piano) as well as the choral parts. This recording, directed by The Esoterics' Founding Director Eric Banks, is an excellent interpretation of Barber's neo-romantic style and was engineered using binaural recording technology.

Songlist: There the wicked cease - Motetto, Call now! - Motetto, God's grandeur - Motetto, Praise him! - Motetto, Twelfth night, Easter chorale, Heaven-haven, Let down the bars, O death, The virgin martyrs, A stopwatch and an ordnance map, To be sung on the water, Mary Hynes - Reincarnations, Anthony O Daly - Reincarnations, The coolin - Reincarnations, Agnus Dei, Sure on this shining night, Happy birthday, Sam Barber

Esoterics : Beata - Songs to the blessed virgin

Review: The Esoterics' first CD, BEATA, celebrates the Virgin Mary as a symbol of purity and devotion, as well as an inspiration for centuries of music. Comprising eighteen compositions from nearly as many countries, this recording presents unaccompanied choral music about Mary from every continent and each decade of this century. This contemporary repertoire is interspersed with strophes of the sequence, O virga ac diadema, by the renowned medieval mystic, poet, and abbess, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179). BEATA was originally performed and recorded in July 1997 (after our highly acclaimed performance of the same title) in a true-to-performance style, where each piece is heard as it was performed, and no gratuitous editing occurred during the mastering process.

Songlist: Hymne a la Vierge, Ave maris stella, Hil dig, havets stjerne, I, Tota pulchra es, Maria, Canticum Mariae Virginis, I beheld her, beautiful as a dove, II, Ave Maria, cheiaa di graca, Ave Maria, cheia di graca, Magnificat, O magnum mysterium, Es ist ein Reis entsprungen, Morning-song for the Christ Child, III, Ave Maria, gratia plena, Ave Maria, gratia plena, Maria durch ein Dornwald ging, IV, Bogoroditse dyevo, raduisya, Bogoroditse dyevo, raduisya, Mater ora filium

Esoterics : Elementia - The elements in their season

Review: ELEMENTIA, the third release from The Esoterics, is a double CD set that encompasses some of the best works from Season 2000. With more than two hours of music, ELEMENTIA features world premiere recordings by Northwest composers Donald Skirvin, Garrett Fisher, and David Asplin. ELEMENTIA is a compilation of works from these concerts, with world premieres and 20th century classics. The repertoire spans continents and styles, with a range of new favorites and choral classics from Britten, Carter, Pizzetti, Stravinsky, Barber, and more. Esoterics : Immaginosa - American inspiration and the modern madrigal

Review: The Esoterics' fifth CD, IMMAGINOSA features premieres by William Hawley and Stephen Paulus and other pieces that represent springtime song cycles on love and life. Recorded after the IMMAGINOSA concert series in May 2004, this CD features several of The Esoterics' favorite cycles. Ross Lee Finney's Spherical madrigals resonates with the exploration and creativity of the Age of Reason, and Irving Fine's artful cycle of six Ben Jonson poems - The hour glass - traverses the evolution of love during the human lifetime. The second half of IMMAGINOSA will either put spring in your step or send you off into blissful dreams. First, revel in recordings of two premiere performances: Four reveries by New York composer William Hawley, followed by a spring madrigal, Now is the gentle season, by Minnesota composer Stephen Paulus. Next, enjoy two contrasting settings of Emily Dickinson by Elliott Carter - Heart not so heavy as mine and Musicians wrestle everywhere. Finally, immerse yourself in two cycles of spectacular strophes by Sara Teasdale: The winds of May by San Francisco composer Kirke Mechem, and Donald Skirvin's Alchemy, which was commissioned by The Esoterics.

Songlist: O know to end as to begin- The hour-glass (1949), Have you seen the white lily grow? - The hour-glass (1949), O do not wanton with those eyes - The hour-glass (1949), Against jealousy - The hour-glass (1949), Lament - The hour-glass (1949), The hour-glass - The hour-glass (1949), Echo - Four reveries (1995), Remembrance - Four reveries (1995), My river runs to thee - Four reveries (1995), Meeting at night - Four reveries (1995), Heart not so heavy as mine (1938), Now is the gentle season (1978), Love is a circle - Spherical Madrigals (1947), When again all these rare perfections meet - Spherical Madrigals (1947) , All-circling point - Spherical Madrigals (1947), His body was an orb - Spherical Madrigals (1947), On a round ball - Spherical Madrigals (1947), Nor doe I doubt - Spherical Madrigals (1947), See how the Earth - Spherical Madrigals (1947), Musicians wrestle everywhere (1945), The tune - The winds of May (1965), Let it be forgotten - The winds of May (1965), Over the roofs - The winds of May (1965), I shall not care - The winds of May (1965), Song - The winds of May (1965), Living gold - Alchemy (2002), Cups of fire - Alchemy (2002) , Jewelled blaze - Alchemy (2002), O Beauty - Alchemy (2002)

Esoterics : Mandala - Meditations on the wholeness of being

Review: From the Sanskrit word for 'circle' or 'completion,' the title of this recording refers to a wide variety of symbols that prevail throughout several spiritual traditions. In more contemporary Western society, the concept of the mandala is used to describe the personal world in which one lives: the activities and interests in which one partakes, as well as those with whom one chooses to associate. MANDALA: such an all encompassing word makes a fitting title for a recording (a CD is a circle, after all!) of choral music themed around meditations on the wholeness of being. Singing in a variety of Eastern languages, The Esoterics have given voice to meditations of several faiths and spiritual practices, including verses inspired by Sufism (by director Eric Banks), Hinduism (by Roger Nelson and Diane Thome), Taoism (by Linda Waterfall, Mark Adamo, and Stephen Paulus), and Buddhism (by John Muehleisen and Donald Skirvin). Each of these eight self-published choral meditations has been composed in the last 15 years, and seven of these were first premiered in concert by The Esoterics. With MANDALA, The Esoterics has taken another step in its mission: to create and perpetuate a cappella choral music that embraces and illuminates texts found outside the Judeo-Christian canon, and gives voice to poetry, philosophy, and spiritual writings from around the world.

Songlist: Javdani (2003), Attaining immortality (2005), All This , Guang, Supreme Virtue, And even my soul remains quiet - Meditations on Li Po (1994), I lift my eyes to watch the mountain moon - Meditations on Li Po (1994), And now the last cloud drains away - Meditations on Li Po (1994), Prologue: Clouds and Moon - Watching the Moon go down (2001), Meditations on the Moon - Watching the Moon go down (2001), Epilogue: The Moon in my heart -Watching the Moon go down (2001), I take refuge - Songs of Enlightenment (2005), Verses and mantras of compassion - Songs of Enlightenment (2005), The fleeting world - Songs of Enlightenment (2005)

Esoterics : Notturna - Odes and airs for the ephemeral hours

Review: NOTTURNA, the title of The Esoterics' seventh CD recording, is the feminine form of the of Italian noun notturno, which refers to a musical composition that is inspired by the night, the "nocturne." A word employed by such diverse composers as Mozart, Chopin, Shostakovich, and Fine, nocturne first applied to 18th-century ensemble pieces in several movements; in the Romantic era, the nocturne evolved to its more familiar form, a single-movement work for piano. Olli Kortekangas' Three romances were performed by The Esoterics at the Harald Andersen International Choir Competition in Helsinki, Finland in September 2006. Lajos Vass Nocturne, the namesake of this recording, recounts the quiet ecstasy of Verlaine's moonlit midnight. The other four pieces on this CD were commissioned by the ensemble in 2001, and are intended to commend our celestial company of sun, moon, and stars - Asplin's Of a turning wheel turns to the ancient wisdom of the Upanishads and Vedas, Rumi, ibn Ezra, Ptolemy, and Tagore; Skirvin's ...stars to hold relies upon the star-gazing strophes of Sara Teasdale; Mantyjarvi's Kosijat echoes the folky flavor of the Finnish national epic, the Kanteletar; and Eric Banks' Celestial Wystan finds inspiration in the verses of WH Auden.

Songlist: Cherry robbers - Three Romances (1995), Green - Three Romances (1995), Old song - Three Romances (1995), A thousand rays - Of a turning wheel (2001), Walk to the well - Of a turning wheel (2001), O resplendent night - Of a turning wheel (2001), Warm - Celestial Wystan (2001), Make this night - Celestial Wystan (2001), The more loving one - Celestial Wystan (2001), Nocturne (1968), Stars - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), I know the stars - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), Winter stars - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), The starry places - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), Give me your stars to hold - ...stars to hold (2001/2006), Intro - Kosijat (2001), Aurinko - Kosijat (2001), Kuu - Kosijat (2001), Pohjantahti - Kosijat (2001)

Esoterics : Ourania - Dreams that reach across the heavens

Review: In OURANIA: Dreams that reach across the heavens, The Esoterics features eight choral works that explore the concept of 'the heavens.' Named for the Greek muse of astronomy, OURANIA ranges in scope from the precise calculations of science, to the lavish polyphony of late Romanticism, and the angelic inspiration of Biblical imagery - offering several perspectives on how we have come to understand the sun, moon, and stars. Included in this recording are Richard Strauss' 16-part choral tone poems Zwei Gesange (Two songs) (Op 34): Der abend (The evening), Friedrich von Schiller's description of Phaebus Apollo, whose chariot draws the sun to setting; and Hymne, Friedrich Ruckert's proclamations of celestial ecstasy, in which the heavens join Jacob as he celebrates the return of his prodigal son. Also featured on this recording are two works by The Esoterics' founder Eric Banks, and these highlight the intersection between the hard science of astronomy (Banks' course of study while at Yale) with music. In his Onomata planeton, a choral intonation of the planets and moons in the solar system, the score is based entirely on the comparative mass, velocity, and period of revolution of these heavenly bodies. Banks' second piece, Tabula siderum zodiaco, draws a similar parallel between music and astronomy, as he chorally maps the 928 stars of the zodiac, by superimposing the twelve constellations of the zodiac upon the twelve key signatures of the "circle of fifths."

Songlist: Der abend , Song of Apollo (2001/2006), Triumf att finnas till (1995), Tabula siderum zodiaco (2002), Onomata planeton (2002), Hymn to the moon (2001/2006), I. Prologus - Hypostasis vel somnium Jacob (1994), II. Visio - Hypostasis vel somnium Jacob (1994), III. Promissio - Hypostasis vel somnium Jacob (1994), IV. Memoria - Hypostasis vel somnium Jacob (1994), V. Actio - Hypostasis vel somnium Jacob (1994), VI. Votum - Hypostasis vel somnium Jacob (1994), VII. Oracululm, Hymne (1897)

Esoterics : Penitentia - Ancient petitions for mercy and peace

Review: The Esoterics is proud to present PENITENTIA, its fourth CD that features works of the Lenten liturgy by Poulenc, Pizzetti, d'Hollander, Herbolsheimer, and more. Francis Poulenc's Quatre motets pour un temps du penitence and Bern Herbolsheimer's Seven last words depict the final moments of Christ's agony. As the cloak of night descends upon this Lenten vigil, Tre composizioni corali by Italian composer Ildebrando Pizzetti and Trois nocturnes by Belgian composer Geert d'Hollander remind us that oppression often inspires the most profound spiritual contemplation. One eloquent result of such reflection was Precatio pro pace, an ancient poem by Janus Pannonius set by the Hungarian composer Miklos Paszti. Another was the unparalleled Pro pace motets of South African composer John Joubert, who designed a triptych around the poems of three medieval mystics - Scottus, Vulgarius, and Abelard - each offering a personal plea for peace: a prayer for mercy from the universal destruction of the Black Death, a lament on the day mankind invented weaponry to harm itself, and an ode that recounts Christ's Passion and Resurrection as the triumph of non-violent protest and ultimate pacifist victory.

Songlist: Cade la sera - Tre composizioni corali (1942- 1943), Ululate, quia prope est dies Domini - Tre composizioni corali (1942- 1943), Recordare, Domine - Tre composizioni corali (1942- 1943), Timor et tremor - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Vinea mea electa - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Tenebrae factae sunt - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Tristis est anima mea - Quatre motets pour un temps de penitence (1938-1939), Father, forgive them - Seven last words (1998-2000), Amen dico tibi - Seven last words (1998-2000), Mulier, ecce filius tuus - Seven last words (1998-2000), Eli, lama sabatani? - Seven last words (1998-2000), I thirst - Seven last words (1998-2000), Consummatum est - Seven last words (1998-2000), Father, into thy hands - Seven last words (1998-2000), Nox et tenebrae - Trois nocturnes (1990), Caligo terrae scinditur - Trois nocturnes (1990), Sunt multa fucis - Trois nocturnes (1990), Ad Martem - Precatio pro pace (1975), Ad Dominum - Precatio pro pace (1975), Libera plebem - Pro pace motets (1955-1959), O tristia secla priora - Pro pace motets (1955-1959), Solus ad vicitmam - Pro pace motets (1955-1959)

Esoterics : Ru'ia - Sacred visions inspired by Islam

Review: The Esoterics proudly presents RU'IA, its ninth CD recording. Titled with an Arabic word meaning "dreams" or "visions," this is the first American choral CD inspired entirely by Islamic scripture and poetry. The repertoire includes: Mombasa matatu meditation by Vancouver composer Hussein Janmohamed - a choral cityscape wherein Muslim chant emerges from the morning din of urban Kenya; Bern Herbolsheimer's Kader kic (The night of destiny) - a setting of verses by Tatar poet Gabdulla Tukai about the holiest night in Ramadan; and the Islamic-inspired Priere by Dutch composer Ton de Leeuw. The centerpiece of this recording is a 50-minute a cappella choral dreamscape by The Esoterics' founder Eric Banks entitled Twelve Qur'anic visions. In addition to studying the Qur'an, Banks researched this piece during his extensive travel to India and Indonesia over the course of two years. The resulting work unveils the essence of Muslim faith, including visions of the creation, the beauty of nature, the wisdom of the prophets, the afterlife in Hell and Paradise, the injustice of aggression, and the path to peace. Banks was strongly motivated to write and record this piece to initiate listeners in the West to one of the most prevalent yet misunderstood religions in the world.

Songlist: Priere (Prayer) (1954), Kader kic (The night of destiny) (2005), Mombasa matatu meditation (2005), I. The names of God - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), II. The messengers of blessing - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), III. The book of light - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), IV. The waves of darkness - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), V. The miracles of creation - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), VI. The balance of the soul - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), VII. The day of reckoning - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), VIII. The torment of Hell - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), IX. The rivers of paradise - Twelve Qur'anic visions (2005-2007), X. Esoterics : Sonettaria - The triumph of iambic pentameter

Review: The first of two discs funded by a grant from the NEA, The Esoterics' sixth CD, SONETTARIA, presents fourteen settings of sonnets: a choral "sonnet of sonnets." Recorded after the SONETTO concert series in May 2006, this CD features six world premiere choral settings of Michelangelo, Rossetti, and Browning by Eric Banks, Lorri Kristin Frogget, and John Muehleisen. In addition, The Esoterics sings two sonnets of Petrarch by Lars John Werle, and five sonnets of Shakespeare by Paul Crabtree, Jaakko Mantyjarvi, and Dominick Argento. To complete this disc, the ensemble performs Three nocturnes by Carlos Chavez, and is joined by guest harpists Alexis Odell and Melissa Walsh to present Robert Moran's Notturno in Weiss.

Songlist: O notte (2006), Sonnet to sleep - Three nocturnes (1942), To the moon - Three nocturnes (1942), So we'll go no more a-roving - Three nocturnes (1942), Die steinerne Familie - Notturno in Weiss (2006), In totenstiller Nacht - Notturno in Weiss (2006), Die Lilie - Notturno in Weiss (2006), I dream of you to wake (2006), Youth gone, and beauty (2006), Sonetto XXXV (1989), Sonetto CCXCII (1993), Time (1997), Sonnet LXIV (2002), O how much more - Three rose madrigals (2000), The forward violet thus I did chide - Three rose madrigals (2000) , O, never say that I was false of heart - Three rose madrigals (2000), The soul's expression (2006), Perplexed music (2006), Etternalmente vive (2006)

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir : Arvo Part - Da Pacem

Review: This collection of shorter sacred works by Arvo Part is the third harmonia mundi recording devoted to the music of the great contemporary Estonian composer. Da pacem includes some of his newest compositions as well as a sampling of works from earlier in his career. Led by Part's longtime collaborator and biographer Paul Hillier, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, along with organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, illuminate the very essence of Part's "holy minimalism," with its roots in early-Medieval polyphony and deep engagement with text. A survey of the work of three decades, Da pacem illustrates the development of Part's triadic, bell-like "tintinabulation" style as the composer explores new colors and texture. The disc features the lovely Magnificat (1989), with its call and response form and the Salve Regina (2001/2002), with its unexpected underlying waltz rhythm. Also included are Part's Dopo la vittoria (1996/1998), a "piccola cantata" commissioned to celebrate the 1,600th anniversary of the death of Saint Ambrose and the title track, Da pacem Domine (2004) - a prayer for peace rendered with an astonishing stillness, in which, says Hillier, "each pitch is carefully placed in position like stones in a Zen garden." Of special note is the world premiere recording of Part's Two Slavonic Psalms (1997) - the first a-cappella work the composer wrote using the "tintinnabuli" style.

Songlist: Da Pacem Domine, Salve Regina, Zwei Salwische Psalmen, Psalm 117, Psalm 131, Magnificat, An Den Wassern Zu Babel, Dopo La Vittoria, Nunc Dimittis, Little Tractus

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir : Baltic Voices 3

Review: Acclaimed conductor Paul Hillier and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir conclude their exploration of the choral riches of the Baltic region with a third and final volume of the Baltic Voices series. The disc features music of established figures in the genre (Bergman, Gorecki, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen) and recent works by the younger generation (Saariaho, Tuur). Baltic Voices 3 includes CD premieres of works by Saariaho, Gorecki and Tuur. Hillier proves time and again that there's a huge quantity of highly effective new choral music out there that's not only entertaining and beautiful but also distinctive and not anachronistic. Highly recommended.

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir : Orthodox Chant

Review: For their second recording together, Paul Hillier leads the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir in a selection of deeply moving sacred choral masterworks from the Slavic tradition of "Divine worship." Dmitry Bortniansky's sublime setting of The Cherubic Hymn represents one of the supreme summits of Orthodox liturgy.

Songlist: Let My Prayer Arise (Dmitry Bortiansky), Now the Powers of Heaven (Giuseppe Sarti), The Cherubic Hymn (Bortiansky), O Most Holy Maiden Mary (anon), Glory / Only Begotten Son (from "Service in a Minor key") (Vasily Titov), In the Flesh Thou Didst Fall Asleep (Baldassare Galuppi), I Lift Up My Eyes to the Mountains (Bortiansky), Praise the Name of the Lord (Nikolai Diletsky), With My Voice I Cried Out to the Lord (Bortiansky), By the Rivers of Babylon (Artemy Vedel), Lord, Make Me to know My End (Bortiansky)

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir : Te Deum

Review: Paul Engel's Venetian Deja-vu is a virtuoso piece, which in a rather free manner is based both on the motet Jubilate Deo omnis terra and the well-known Sonata No. XIII for eight instrumental voices in two choirs by Giovanni Gabrieli. Even though this roughly 15 minute long composition cannot be regarded as sacred music, it was still composed for performance as part of a concert of church music. Engel's Te Deum is a piece in four movements of approximately 25 minutes in length which forms a musical arch beginning with the music for several voices of the occident and stretches to a modern, generally harmonic tonal language. Cyrillus Kreek worked like Bartok for many years as a musical researcher. He collected spiritual folksongs, which he catalogued and revised. He wrote 450 songs for choir with various voices and arranged 500 hymns in polyphony. In 1927, he completed his "Estonian Requiem" which is regarded as his masterpiece. Kreek's settings of David's Psalms form a kind of bridge between the comprehensive form of the requiem and the spiritual folksongs. They distinguish themselves through their emotional balance which is never monotonous. The Norwegian composer Knut Nystedt's "Immortal Bach" is based on the Bach chorale, Komm, susser Tod. Nystedt interprets this chorale in a manner typical for his style by attempting to unite the old with the new.

Songlist: Te Deum, Venetian Deja vu , Psalms of David , Toccata, Adagio and Fugue in C major , Orgelbuchlein: Wenn wir in hochsten Noten sein, Immortal Bach

Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir : Veljo Tormis, Litany To Thunder

Review: Veljo Tormis's timeless compositions draw inspiration from Estonia's ancient history, and these evocations of the past, influenced by folk musics of the Baltic region, are often mesmerizing in sheer physical power. There is nothing else in contemporary choral music that can be compared with "Curse Upon Iron", where the fierce declamations of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir are underpinned by the pounding pulse of a shaman's drum. At such moments, Tormis's music seems possessed, and even the quieter episodes - such as the runo-songs performed by two young sopranos - have an hypnotic insistency.

Songlist: How Can I recognize My Home, Singing Aboard Ship, Curse Upon Iron, The Singer's Childhood, Songs Of The Ancient Sea, The Bishop And The Pagan, Litany To Thunder, The Lost Geese

Ex Cathedra : Charpentier - Mass for four choirs

Review: A contemporary of Lully and Lalande, Charpentier was something of an outsider to the French court of Louis XIV, something which helps to explain his comparative obscurity since his death in 1704. A period of study in Rome doubtless gave Charpentier exposure to the polychoral style long-established from the time of Gabrieli, and this spirited new recording from Ex Cathedra presents the triple-choir Salve regina alongside the opulent Mass - for four separate choirs. The possibilities opened up by such a wealth of musicians engender music which seems as close to the proverbial 'choir of the angels of heaven' as could be desired. The disc also includes Salut de la veille des 'O', a setting of the seven antiphons for Christmas imploring God to come and save the earth, and the dramatic mini-oratorio La reniement de St Pierre, telling of Peter's frantic denials of Christ before the inevitable crowing of the cock. Performances by the soloists, choir and orchestra of Ex Cathedra perfectly capture the lavish atmosphere of the period, fully living up to the enviable reputation the group's previous recordings have earned.

Songlist: Salve Regina A Trios Choeurs , Kyrie, Gloria, Chant Assumpta Est Maria, Credo, Chant Ave Maris Stella, Sanctus And Benedictus, Agnus Dei, Domine, Salvum Fac Regem, Salut De La Veille Des 'O': O Salutaris Hostia, O Sapientia, O Adonai, O Radix Jesse, O Clavis David, Oriens, O Rex Gentium, O Emmanuel, Le Reniement De St Pierre

Exon Singers : Francis Jackson Sacred Music

Review: As he approaches his 90th birthday Francis Jackson remains one of the finest, bestloved and most versatile church musicians of his age. The eleven works on this disc, none of them previously recorded, have all the colour, emotional depth and attention to structural detail that are consistent hallmarks of his style. Working closely with the composer, the Exon Singers bring their customary blend of virtuosity, intense commitment and subtle responsiveness to this special birthday tribute.

Songlist: Missa Matris Dei Opus 72, Tantum Ergo , A Hymn to God the Father, Three Carols for Advent, Gabriel's Message, I Know a Flower, While the Careless World is Sleeping, Evening Service in B flat, Homage to Thomas Weelkes, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis, O Most Merciful, The Prayer of Saint Francis, Thanks be to the Lord

Exon Singers : Victoria - Second Vespers of the Fest of the Annunciation

Review: The Spanish master of the golden age of polyphony, Tomas Luis de Victoria, left an astoundingly beautiful legacy of antiphonal sacred music devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Realised for the very first time here by The Exon Singers is a Vespers for the Annunciation, bringing together these works of Marian devotion in a glorious and revelatory celebration.

Songlist: Deus, In Adiutorium, Meum Intende, Missus Est Gabriel, Dixit Dominus, Missus Est Gabriel, Ave Maria, Laudate Pueri Dominum, Ave Maria, Ne Timeas Maria, Laetatus Sum, Ne Timeas Maria, Dabat Ei Dominus, Ecce Virgo Concipiet, Angelus Domini Nuntiavit Mariae , Ave Maris Stella, Ave Maria Gratia Plena, Gabriel Angelus, Magnifica anima Mea, Gabriel Angelus, Dominus Vobiscum, Benedicamus Domino, Regina Coeli, Gaude Et Laetare, Deus, Qui Per, ResurrectionFilii, Kurie Eleison

Finzi Singers : Britten: Choral Edition Vol 1

Review: This is the first volume of the Britten Choral Edition series. The recital opens with four masterful hymns that exhibit Britten's creativity, including the Hymn of St Columba (1962) and the Hymn to the Virgin (1930), which serve as testaments to the skill he possessed at age 16. The recording continues on to the frequently-recorded Rejoice in the Lamb (1943), the delightful Choral Dances from "Gloriana" and concludes with A.M.D.G. The Finzi Singers' Britten Choral Edition cannot escape comparrison to (if not competition with) the three-disc Britten set previously released by The Sixteen. In regard to the two series, as weighed in a review by Gramophone (August, 1998), "there is no clear-cut decision. Balance differs somewhat in the two recordings, The Sixteen having a fuller, more sonorous presence, the Finzis giving more prominence to the organ in accompanied items. Andrew Lumsden's contribution may indeed help to tip the balance further in the Finzis' favour for he is constantly bringing out something in colour or rhythm that adds flavour and distinction."

Songlist: Hymn to St Peter, Op. 56a, A Hymn of St. Columba, A Hymn to the Virgin, Hymn to St Cecilia, Op. 27, Rejoice in the Lamb, Op. 30, Choral Dances from Gloriana, A.M.D.G.

Finzi Singers : Britten: Choral Edition Vol 2

Review: The second installment of the Britten Choral Edition opens with the spirited and little-known Jubilate in E flat (1934), and gives great pleasure throughout. The opening of the Te Deum, for instance, is energetic in its precision. The opening of the Sanctus in the Missa brevis similarly bears an extra splendour of tone and movement. Sweet was the Song the Virgin sang (1931 and second term at the RCM) has an uncanny sureness of touch, and "Thou art the King of glory" erupts with color vitality in rhythm. The Missa brevis too gains with each listen, although Gramophone (Augsut, 1998) reminds of us to question of the use of women's voices instead of boys'. "Something is lost, even here, and going back to Britten's own recording of the Ceremony of Carols with the Copenhagen Boys' Choir (odd as they often sound to our ears) one again misses something distinctive on return to the ladies - whether of the Finzi Singers or The Sixteen."

Songlist: Jubilate Deo, Te Deum, Antiphon, Op. 56b, Missa Brevis, Op. 63, A Wedding anthem, Op. 46, Sweet Was the Song the Virgin Sung, A ceremony of carols, Op. 28, Festival Te Deum, Op. 32, Jubilate Deo

Finzi Singers : Britten: Choral Edition Vol 3

Review: Britain's Finzi Singers, under the direction of Paul Spicer, specialize in twentieth-century British choral music. This CD, the third in a series featuring an all-Britten program, includes one of his earliest works, written while he was at the Royal College of Music and experimenting with serial procedures: "A Boy Was Born." One of his last compositions, "Sacred and Profane," written the year before his death in 1976, is a cyclic setting of verse from the 12th and 14th centuries. Also included are "Five Flower Songs" (1942) and "Advanced Democracy" (1938, reflecting the political unrest in Europe). As is typical of contemporary classical, the sound can be tonally ambigious, stylistically discordant and disturbing, though expertly realized.

Songlist: To Daffodils, The Succession Of The Four Sweet Months, Marsh Flowers, The Evening Primrose, Ballad Of Green Broom, St. Godric's Hymn, I Mon Waxe Wod, Lenten Is Come, The Long Night, Yif Ic Of Luve Can, Carol, Ye That Passen By, A Death, Theme: A Boy Was Born, Variation I: Lullaby, Jesu, Variation II: Herod-, Variation III: Jesu, As Thou Art Our Saviour, Variation IV: The Three Kings, Variation V: In The Bleak Mid-Winter-, Variation VI: (Finale): Noel

Finzi Singers : Elgar - Part Songs

Review: The Finzi Singers seem to know just what is required of them, bringing their imaginative style to some of the best partsongs. The programme is arranged chronologically until the last five pieces, which form a kind of encore-group or coda to the recital. From Op. 18 to Op. 73 is quite a journey. In years, it goes from 1890 (the date of My love dwelt in a Northern land, from Op. 18) to 1914: most of Elgar's creative life lies between. The imaginative freedom and technical assurance of the 1914 settings are attributes hard won in the period that divides these compositions from the easier charm and geniality of the early sets. Yet, returning to those, one finds a very characteristic strength, whether of melody, harmony or phrasing.

Songlist: O Happy Eyes, Love, My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land, Yea, Cast me from Heights of the Mountains, Whether I Find Thee, Aver Many a Dusty Mile, It's Oh! to be a Wild Wind, Feasting I Watch, There is Sweet Music, Deep in My Soul, O Wild West Wind!, Owls (An Epitaph), The Shower, The Fountain, Death on the Hills Op. 72, Love's Tempest, Serenade, How Calmly the Evening, Weary Wind of the West, Wvening Scene, The Prince of Sleep, Go, Song of Mine Op. 57

Finzi Singers : Holst / Vaughan Williams Choral

Review: As directed by Paul Spicer, this English mixed ensemble has devoted themselves to the promulgation of British choral works. The relatively obscure Gustav Holst composed during the turn of the century, whereas Vaughan Williams began his career slightly later, by collecting English folk songs, ultimately accumulating over eight hundred! Later, Williams wrote various pieces for royal occasions and the like, such as "The Souls Of The Righteous" to dedicate the Battle Of Britain chapel. Sometimes dark and mournful ("Valiant For Truth"), hearty and powerful ("Sing Me The Men"), eerie and captivating ("Full Fathom Five") or gentle and pure ("O Lady, Leave That Silken Thread"), this collection is always uncompromised in excellence.

Songlist: The Dark-Eyed Sailor, The Springtime Of The Year, Just As The Tide Was Flowing, The Lover's Ghost , Wassail Song, Ave Maria, Op. 9b, Valiant For Truth, O Vos Omnes, The Evening-Watch, Op.43, No 1, O Taste And See, The Souls Of Righteous, This Have I Done For My True Love, Op. 34, No. 2, Nunc Dimittis , Sing Me The Men, Op. 43, No. 2, Full Fathom Five, The Cloud-Capp'd Towers, Over Hill, Over Dale, O Lady, Leave That Silken Thread, Soft And Gently, The Autumn Is Old, Winter And The Birds, The Turtle Dove

Finzi Singers : Howells / Stevens

Review: In a series focusing on sacred 20th century choral works of British composers, the 20-strong mixed choral group The Finzi Singers, founded and directed by Paul Spicer, have presented some brilliant works by relatively unknown composers. Herbert Howells, described as "the central composer for the 20th century Anglican liturgy," is hardly unknown, but here are early works for the church that were believed lost up until very recently. Included are 15 of Howells' songs, including the 8 soaring movements of "Mass in the Dorian Mode, "Salve Regina," "O salutaris Hostia," "Sweetest of Sweets," "Come My Soul," "Antiphon," Nunc dimittis" and Regina caili," Following are works by Bernard Stevens, like Howells, closely associated with the Royal College of Music. The 5 movements of his 1939 "Mass for Double Choir," "Kyrie eleison," "Gloria," "Sanctus," "Benedictus" and "Agnus Dei" are striking works by a brilliant composer whose works are under-performed and under-recognized today. The Finzi Singers are one of the best church choirs we've heard, and they have recorded a very special CD. The extensive liner notes have all lyrics and information about the composers.

Songlist: Mass in the Doriam Mode:, I Kyrie, II Gloria in Excelsis, III Credo, IV Sanctus, V Benedictus, VI Osanna, VII Agnus Dei I, VIII Agnus Dei II, Salve Regina, O salutaris Hostia, Sweeest of sweets, Come, my soul, Antiphon, Nunc dimittis, Regina caeli, Mass for Double Choir:, I Kyrie eleison, II Gloria, III Sanctus, IV Benedictus, V Agnus Dei

Finzi Singers : Howells / Williams - English Romantic Choral Music

Review: Here is another excellent record by the Finzi Singers in a series which is proving as valuable as anything in the current lists. They have standards in their choice of music as in their manner of performance, and everything they have undertaken in their recordings has been in a tradition of good workmanship and good taste. This present programme, with its alternation of works by Howells and Vaughan Williams, illustrates the individuality of both composers as well as the shared possession of a culture deeply loved and richly imbued. All are finely caught in these performances, not least the aeroplanes in Harry Bickett's imaginative registration and skilful playing. Choral tone, the work of soloists drawn from the choir, recorded sound, written presentation, all are admirable features of a highly recommendable disc.

Songlist: Prayer to the Father of Heaven, A Sequence for St Michael, A Vision of Aeroplanes, The House of the Mind, Lord, Thou hast been our Refuge, Requiem:, I Salvator mundi, II Psalm 23, III Requiem aeternam (1), IV Psalm 121, V Requiem aeternam (2), VI I heard a voice from heaven

Finzi Singers : Howells Choral Music

Review: This is another exemplary addition to the Finzi Singers' ever-expanding discography. The earliest offerings here include "Even Such Is Time," an unpublished effort from 1913, and spans all the way to 1970, with "and Thee I Will Love," a heartfelt setting from 1970 with words by Robert Bridges, "commemorating the massacre of the monks of the Abbey of Medehamstede - now Peterborough Cathedral - in AD 870". As we have now come to expect from this partnership on record, these are splendidly fervent, finely disciplined performances (one readily forgives the occasional raw sonority from the sopranos). Excellent Chandos engineering, too. A hearty recommendation.

Songlist: Behold, O God our Defender, Here is the Little Door, Sing Lullaby, A Spotless Rose, Te Deum, The Scribe, Thee will I Love, Blessed are the Dead, Even Such is Time, Inheritance, Heac Dies, God is Gone Up

Finzi Singers : Leighton Choral Music

Review: The Finzi Singers are a 20-strong, mixed British choral group, founded by Paul Spicer in 1987 for a Festival of British Music given under the auspices of the Finzi Trust. They are now regarded as the major exponents of British 20th-century choral music, in which they specialize. For the Chandos label, the Finzis are recording a wide variety of British music, much of which has never been heard before. This is the music of Kenneth Leighton (1929-1988) all eclectic, powerful Christian choral music, 8 songs in five groups: "God's Grandeur," "What Love Is This Of Thine?," "Give Me the Wings of Faith," "Crucifixus pro nobis, Op. 38," which has four parts, "Christ in the Cradle," "Christ in the Garden," "Christ in His Passion," and "Hymn," and "Lully, Lulla, Thou Little Tiny Child" first composed when Leighton was only 18. Difficult, dissonant, soaring passages are easily handled by the Singers, who treat us to some amazing music by an fine, relatively unknown composer. Some organ accompaniment. Extensive, detailed liner notes.

Songlist: God's Grandeur, What Love if This of Thine?, Give Me the Wings of Faith, Crucifixus pro obis, Op. 38, Lully, Lulla, Thou Little Tiny Child, Op. 25b, Mass, Op. 44, Laudate pueri, Op. 68

Finzi Singers : Moeran / Warlock

Review: Given performances as openly sincere and sensitive as these, few could remain unmoved. Bethlehem Down with its haunting, desolate air is the best-known work here but it only hints at the emotional intensity of such wonderful carols as The full heart with its exotic harmonies and complex part-writing and the ravishingly beautiful Corpus Christi. The relationship between Warlock and Moeran can be overworked: musically the connections seem largely superficial. Not for Moeran the pained utterances of a twisted soul, but in these two matchless madrigal suites there is an indefinable Englishness-the result of a deep awareness of tradition and love of the countryside. Again the innate musicality of the Finzi Singers pays handsome dividends; these warm-toned, richly expressive voices (not least Andrea Gray and Andrew Carwood, magnificent soloists in Warlock's Corpus Christi) seem to capture the very essence of this uniquely lovely music.

Songlist: Songs of Springtime:, Under the Greenwood Tree, The River-God's Song, Sping, the Sweet Spring, Love is a Sickness, Sigh no more, Ladies, Good Wine, To Daffodils, Phyllida and Corydon:, Madrigal - Phyllida and Corydon, Madrigal - Beauty sat bathing by a spring, Pastoral - On a hill there grows a flower, Air - Phyllis inamorata, Ballet - Said I that Amaryllis, Canzonet - The treasure of my heart, Air - While she lies sleeping, Pastoral - Corydon, arise, Madrigal - To meadows, A Cornish Carol, I saw a fair maiden, Benadicamus Domino, The Full Heart, The Rich Cavalcade, Corpus Christi, All the Flowers of the Spring, As Dew in Aprylle, Bethlehem Down, A Cornish Christmal Carol

Flemish Radio Choir : Robert Schumann - Choral Works

Review: Overshadowed by his orchestral, chamber, keyboard, and vocal music, the choral works of Robert Schumann are seriously neglected and have become a specialized interest for devotees of the genre. Yet some of his most charming music was written for choir, and in the hands of a really capable group, the music is as appealing as any of Schumann's most popular songs or miniatures. The Flemish Radio Choir, a small ensemble under the direction of Bo Holten, is one such group, and its beautifully blended voices lend these choral songs a purity and sweetness that are wholly appropriate for Schumann's poignant harmonies and lyrical settings of German poetry. Most of these songs are performed a cappella, which creates a rather light and airy effect in the resonant studio acoustics, though the numbers with piano accompaniment, played by Inge Spinette, are grouped at the end of the program, so the change of sound isn't unsettling. Because there are few recordings of Schumann's choral works, and even fewer performed with such eloquence and polish, this disc may present the best opportunity to hear this overlooked repertoire.

Songlist: An die Sterne, Ungewisses Licht, Zuversicht, Talismane, Der Konig von Thule, Schon-Rohtraut, Heidenroslein, Ungewitter, Der Traumende See, Die Minnesanger, Die Lotosblume, Am Bodensee, Gute Nacht, Tamburinschlagerin, Klosterfraulein, In der Nacht, Es ist verraten, Ich bin geliebt

Fortuna Ensemble : Italian Madrigals of Giovan Tomaso Lambertini

Review: The Italian madrigals are some of the most exquisite vocal works ever written. This is the music found in Giovan Tomaso Lambertini's first book of madrigals. They are fifteen stanzas by Messer Bernado Tasso composed in 1544, during the poets period of residence in northern Europe with the patronage of the prince of Salerno. While other composers set some of the stanzas to music, Giovan adorned all fifteen of them with music and completed the works in his first book with six poetic works by the composer himself. It was published in 1560, the same year as some of Bernado's most important works. Experience this beautiful music for four voices created by various groupings of the Fortuna Ensemble, conducted by Roberto Cascio.

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : Sentimental Journey

Review: Called "the man who taught America how to sing" Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians were a fixture on radio in the '40's and '50's and these 23 songs were recorded in 1949 and 1950 when at the height of their popularity. The group, including the instrumentalists, was over 50 members strong and sing beautifully some of the classic songs from the era. The arrangements were from some of the top choral arrangers in the country such as Roy Ringwold and Harry Simeone. A great trip down memory lane.

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : To You Forever / In Concert

Review: From the cherished Christmas carol, the sincere warmth of the spiritual, the cheer of the drinking song, to the tenderness of the love song, Fred Waring was the delineator, the innovator, the voice and interpreter of the language of 1960s youth in song. This all-accompanied, 2 CD, 2-lp compilation, originally released on Reprise in 1964, tours the world's greatest popular love songs. Composers and authors of course include Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, the Gershwins, Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, and we have the contrast of the studio-recorded lp, "To You Forever," and the live "In Concert" lp. The 11 songs on "Forever," smooth and sweet as you please: "You Do Something to Me," "Embraceable You," "All of You" and "All the Things You Are"-are listed in the dictionary under "Romantic." "In Concert" features an intro to the audience by Fred, and is a lively collection, from folk tunes like "Mr. Frog A Courtin'" and "On Top Of Old Smokey," spirituals like "Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic," and show tunes like "Hello, Dolly" to movie tunes like "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialadocious" from "Mary Poppins." This is entertainment!

Songlist: The Very Thought of You (Noble), (You'd Be So) Easy to Love, You Do Something To Me, The Nearness of You, You and the Night and the Music (Schwartz, Dietz), Embraceable You (G. Gershwin, I. Gershwin), You'd Be So Nice to Come Home to (Cole Porter), You're Driving Me Crazy (Donaldson), There Will Never Be Another You (Warren, Gordon), All Of You, All The Things You Are (Kern, Hammerstein II), I Hear Music and Sleep, Sleep, Sleep (Waring, Doph/Waring, Geibel), Mr. Frog A Courtin' He Did Ride (Traditional), Hello Mudduh, Hello Faddah (Bush, Sherman), The Swingin' Shepherd Blues (Koffman, Roberts, Jacobson), Joshua Fit De Battle of Jericho (Traditional), On Top of Old Smokey (Traditional), 12th Street Rag (Bauman), Sweet Sue - Just You (Harris, Young), Vilia (Lehor), Cecilia (Dreyer, Ruby), Nola (Amdt, Skylar), Hello, Dolly!, Dance of the Hours (Ponchielli), Nutcracker Suite Overture and Anitra's Dance and Fugue in C Minor and Our, Love (Tchaikovsky), Jada a la Dixieland (Carleton), Jada (Carleton), Ritual Fire Dance (Defalla), Chim Chim Cher-ee (Sherman, Sherman), and more

Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians : We All Scream For Ice Cream

Review: It's hard to imagine having a career in music more sheer fun than Fred Waring's. Starting a banjo orchestra with his brother and friends while a student at Penn State University, the band did so well he had to choose between that and architecture, and chose music. By 1922 the 9-member band toured locally, growing to 11 members on their tour through Canada, playing snappy, fast-paced numbers. Success in the Detroit-Chicago area led to a Victor recording contract and "Sleep," their first smash hit. Movies (Harold Lloyd's "The Freshman," RKO's "Syncopation," the Broadway musical "Hello, Yourself," and Fred and the Pennsylvanians were a top box office draw on a level with Paul Whiteman's orchestra. Fred's own 1930 musical comedy "Rah Rah Daze" became a smash on Broadway called "The New Yorkers." Millions tuned into his regular radio programs with the band and Waring's "Glee Club," from 1933 through the war years, finally ending in 1957. During this time he had a regular TV slot from 1947 to 1954 and a daytime show in 1957. Concert tours continued through the 1970s, finally playing at Reagan's inaugural in 1981. Finding time to invent the famous Waring blender, Waring died at Penn State, where it had all begun, in 1984. Glasgow Phoenix Choir : Iona Abbey

Review: This, the Choir's 32nd recording is completely unique being recorded 'live' in lona Abbey by special permission of Historic Scotland and the lona Community in May 2004. The serene and sacred atmosphere of this most holy of settings in Scotland, a place of pilgrimage visited by people from throughout the world, inspired both singers and audience alike. Now for the first time ever there is available a live recording of religious and secular music, both classical and modern, including songs especially associated with Iona and its neighbouring island of Mull. Let the music transport you back to lona - our performance started with Scottish repertoire and then developed into one of those profound occasions when the sun shone, the birds sang and the sound of heavenly voices filled this remote and magnificent setting. Surely this recording is a must have souvenir of Iona & Mull.

Gloriae Dei Cantores : Chants of Easter

Review: This recording of Gregorian Chant from the Glorae Dei Cantores Schola celebrates the Feast of the Resurrection, which is rooted in the earliest centuries of Christian worship. This "celebration of celebrations" is a time for rebirth, and this recording reflects that sense of personal renewal and joy. The Chants of Easter includes the Propers of Easter Day and chants for the octave of Easter---daily services that are part of the week-long celebration of the Easter miracle. These chants are conveyed with careful attention to subtleties in the ancient Gregorian notation, inviting listeners to share the experience of Christ's resurrection in all its richness.
