Camerata Chamber Choir : Poul Ruders - Works for A Cappella Choir

Review: Formed in 1965, award-winning mixed choir Camerata has been one of the most prolific chamber choirs in Denmark. Apart from traditional a cappella concerts of several works by Danish composers, the Choir has performed such symphonic works as Mozart's "Requiem" and Handel's "Messiah." Contemporary (b. 1949) composer Poul Ruders includes in his musical universe medieval, renaissance and baroque eras, rock music, American minimalism and modernism in a direct, vibrant, almost music-video-like style. The first movement, 24 minutes long, "Stabat Mater," is a dramatic, surprising piece that combines 10-part harmony with some samples of "out-of-tune piano, organ and percussion." Then we have 3 motets, done mostly in the sacred medieval and renaissance styles: "Preghiera semplice," "Caritas nunquam exidit" and "Psalm 86." The last piece, 17 minutes long, the Medieval Danish folksong "Queen Dagmar's Death," is a somber-toned requiem with some unbelievable soprano solos from Choir members. "Poul Ruders" is an impressive, very different choral CD of works by a brilliant composer.

Songlist: Stabat Mater, Three Motets:, Preghiera semplice, Caritas nunquam exidit, Psalm 86, The Death of Queen Dagmar

Camerata Singers : Works of Randall Thompson and Libby Larsen

Review: The Stony Brook (NY) Camerata Singers have sung at prestigious music festivals such as the Utrecht Early Music Festival and the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival in California. Their 30 mixed voices represent a cross-section of Stony Brook University, and they sing music from all periods, early to modern. While the major works of Randall Thompson (1899-1984) and Libby Larsen (b. 1950) are well-known, this CD offers a unique opportunity to hear some of their smaller works for unaccompanied chorus, and to compare these two American composers separated by half a century. 16 songs: first Thompson's "Antiphon" (1970), then 7 movements of "Mass of the Holy Spirit" (1955), followed by three striking "Sweet and Sour Nursery Rhymes" by Larsen, "There Was a Little Girl", "Little Boy Blue" and "Try, Try Again" (all 3 accompanied by French Horn). Then two by Thompson, "Glory to God in the Highest" (1958) and "Fare Well" (1973) are followed by the complex, dissonant "Bind Me, I Can Still Sing" and "Adrift! A Little Boat Adrift!" by Larsen, and the final cut is Thompson's "The Lark in the Morn" (1938). An interesting contrast of two composers, both brilliant, each with a totally different focus.

Songlist: Mass of the Holy Spirit:, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Hosanna, Agnus Dei , Sweet and Sour Nursery Rhymes:, There Was A Little Girl, Little Boy Blue, Try, Try Again, Glory to God in the Highest, Fare Well, Bind Me, Adrift! A Little Boat Adrift!, The lark in the Morn

Camerata Vocal Group : My Angel

Review: The Camerata Vocal Group comprises eight professional musicians, seven singers and a sound engineer. All are graduates of higher schools of music in Belarus and Russia. Their repertoire includes pieces belonging to different genres, from classical to jazz, oftentimes interwoven with each other, giving birth to totally new and uncommon combinations. The core of "Angel" is Slavic folklore, but each piece is a work of experimental and quite amazing vocal art. Concert tours in the Soviet Union, Switzerland, Poland, Turkey, Austria and the U.S. have gained them fans from all music traditions. Eight stunning pieces: "Near The Grove," the soaring "Falcon," the title tune (with a marvelous vocal "horn section"), the classical/jazzy "My Little Eye-Brows," "Autumn Night," "Segudilia," "Bulgarian Fantasy" and "Christmas." Absolutely lovely, with harmonies and vocal effects that must be heard to be believed. Camerata is one of the best in the world, however we wish to define or categorize them!

Songlist: Near the Grove, Falcon, My Angel, My LIttle Eye-brows, Autumn Night, Segudilia, Bulgarian Fantasy, Christmas

Cardinall's Musick : Tallis - Gaude Gloriosa

Review: This new Hyperion recording celebrates the 500th anniversary of the birth of England's first superstar composer, Thomas Tallis, and welcomes the signing to the label of The Cardinall's Musick and Andrew Carwood. Over the group's fifteen-year history, The Cardinall's Musick has built an enviable reputation for excellence. Some twenty recordings on the ASV Gaudeamus label have seen accolades from around the world, including a Gramophone Award and a Diapason d'Or, while in the concert hall and workshop the group has consistently displayed innovation and a freshness of approach, whether tackling contemporary works (many of them commissions) or sharing the fruits of years of research into the music of the English Renaissance. On their debut recording for Hyperion, The Cardinall's Musick turns to the period of its namesake, Cardinal Wolsey, and specifi cally to the music of Thomas Tallis. Gaude gloriosa takes center stage. One of a series of monumental and extended motets (each lasting getting on for twenty minutes), this should be regarded as the summation of the genre - whereas Tallis's earlier attempts such as Salve intemerata or Ave Dei Patris fi lia can seem to ramble somewhat, in Gaude gloriosa we find a sure-footed and eloquent response to an unusual text in honor of the Virgin Mary, and a work which takes singer and listener alike into a world of unremitting fervor. Other works on this recording include the famous Loquebantur variis linguis and O nata lux settings, the five-voice Latin Magnificat and Nunc dimittis. Of special note is the Suscipe quaeso Domine - where a particularly gloomy text (thought to have been written to mark England's reconciliation with Rome on the accession of Mary Tudor) elicits from Tallis some truly extraordinary and rhetorical effects including harmonic shifts which are every bit as shocking today as they must have been at the work's first performance in 1554. Future plans for The Cardinall's Musick on Hyperion include the completion of their on-going series encompassing the complete Latin church music of William Byrd.

Songlist: Jesu Salvator Saeculi, Gaude Gloriosa, Sermone Blando Angelus, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis, Derelinquat Impius, Loquebantur Variis Linguis, Suscipe Quaeso Domine, O Nata Lux

CardinallÕs Musick : Allegri: Miserere & the Music of Rome

Review: The Cardinall's Musick finished 2010 in a blaze of glory with their Gramophone Recording of the Year award for the last volume of their Byrd Edition. Only the second time in thirty years that an Early Music recording has received this prestigious accolade, it is a fitting tribute to the soaring artistry of the group and their director, Andrew Carwood. Their eagerly-awaited next disc features music from late sixteenth-century Rome and ranges from Allegri's Miserere, surely the best-known and best-loved work of this period, to a rarely-performed or recorded oddity. Seven Roman musicians came together (or were brought together) to write a Mass-setting where they each contributed different sections. The resulting work, the twelve-voice Missa Cantantibus organis, is a tribute both to Cecilia (the patron saint of music) and to Palestrina. The seven composers each take themes found in Palestrina's motet of the same name and use them as the starting point for their new compositions. Palestrina himself is among the seven, with Giovanni Andrea Dragoni, Ruggiero Giovannelli, Curzio Mancini, Prospero Santini, Francesco Soriano and Annibale Stabile being the other six. All seven composers were prominent maestri in Rome and most appear to have had contact with Palestrina either as choristers or pupils.

Songlist: Salve regina, Kyrie eleison (Missa Cantatibus organis), Christie eleison, Kyrie eleison, Gloria, Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Qui tollis peccata mundi, Credo, Crucifixus, Et ascendit in caelum, Et in Spiritum Sanctum, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, De lamentatione Jeremiae prophetae, Miserere mei, Deus, Incipit lamentatio Jeremiae prophetae, Cantantibus organis, Gustate et videte

Chamber Choir of Europe : O Magnum Mysterium

Review: Considered to be one of America's foremost contemporary composers Morten Lauridsen is a master of writing choral music that is harmonically lush, contrapuntally interesting, melodically memorable, and gratifying to sing. This disc brings together four of his most popular works, which include three cycles -- Les Chansons des Roses, Lux Aeterna, Madrigali -- as well as his setting of O Magnum Mysterium. The Chamber Choir of Europe, conducted by Nicol Matt, sings with warmth and a secure tone. Matt conducts with sensitivity, giving the music plenty of room to breathe, with tempos generally on the relaxed side. The choir is particularly effective in the moving and densely chromatic a cappella O Magnum Mysterium. Lux Aeterna is heard in its version with organ, played by Jorg Halubek, rather than with instrumental accompaniment. The composer provides sensitive accompaniment on the piano in "Dirait-on," the final (and only accompanied) song in Les Chansons des Roses. The sound is warm and intimate. While the performances fall short of being sublime, this CD would be a good introduction to the variety of Lauridsen's work for anyone interested in accessible and gratifying new choral music.

Songlist: Les Chansons Des Roses, Lux Aeterna, Madrigali, O Magnum Mysterium

Choir of All Saints Church, Beverly Hills : Be Still, My Soul

Review: A stunning program of contemplative sacred texts set to some of the most beautiful singing we've heard. Slow, focussed intensity creates a strong emotional response from many listeners. The Martin piece alone is worth the price of admission. With premiere recordings of new anthems by Craig Phillips and Roland Martin, this CD is also the first recording of the widely admired Choir of All Saints, Beverly Hills, under its new director, Dale Adelmann. The Choir specializes in music of the Anglican cathedral and American Episcopal choral traditions and is equally at home singing the great masters of the European Continent.

Songlist: Be Still, My Soul, Greater love hath no man, We walk by faith, Jesus, so lowly, Catique de Jean Racine, And he shall reign as King, The Risen Sun, I sat down under his shadow, Transfiguration, The Altar, Geistliches Lied, Steal away, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, A Repeating Alleluia

Choir of Clare College : John Rutter - Mass of the Children

Review: Bringing together the voices of adults and children, Rutter's Mass of the Children is scored for mixed choir, soprano and baritone soloists, orchestra, and the irresistible charm of a children's choir. Rutter's skilful writing for these forces together with his sensitive interweaving of both the Latin Mass texts and Thomas Ken's renowned morning and evening hymns for Winchester College, gives the whole work the framework of a complete day, from waking to sleeping. This has resulted in one of his finest and most moving works to date.

Choir of Clare College : John Rutter - Requiem

Review: Rutter's Requiem, from 1985, is wildly popular among modern choirs, audiences, and record shoppers. It is offered here in the world premiere recording of its chamber version, making what is considered a concert piece more suitable for liturgical purposes or intimate venues. This, along with many of his other works, has a direct, uncluttered, almost folksy air to it, while hardly ever lapsing into banality. Just when you begin to think, "Ah, I've heard this kind of stuff before", up Rutter comes with some ingenious device or harmonic twist that grabs even the most jaded ear. And he knows how to hold such a comparatively larger-scale composition together, too. This is one of Rutter's finest and most convincing works. It consoles, implores, worships, affirms, reassures, and mystifies-everything that a good requiem is supposed to do. Instrumental accompaniment (single flute, oboe, cello, harp, and timpani, plus percussion) is spare, but expert and tasteful. Rutter has a long and fruitful history with the Clare College Choir, having led them himself in quite a few outstanding recordings. They perform here with their usual depth, sensitivity, technical finesse, and bright, clear sound.

Songlist: Requiem Aeternam Out Of The Deep, Pie Jesu, Sanctus, Agnus Dei , The Lord Is My Shepard, Lux aeterna, Advent Anthem, Anthem, Musicca Dei Donum, Two Blessings

Choir of Clare College : Lamentations

Review: This recording brings together music composed in a variety of contrasting yet complementary forms, from Gregorian chant to more elaborate, polyphonic music, set to words that explore the rawest human emotions, death, sin and repentance. The death of a loved one is a particularly distressing experience, and over the centuries composers have channeled their grief into their most moving and emotional works. In the 1850s Brahms composed the German Requiem after he lost his mother, and Faurˇ's Requiem was also composed after his mother died. Britten produced the imposingly bleak and Mahlerian Sinfonia da Requiem after the death of his parents. In this recording, the grief of Mary, the mother of Christ, is portrayed in Palestrina's masterful setting of the Stabat Mater, composed for Pope Gregory XIV. Another moving portrayal of grief is Weelkes's intimate depiction of the pain of David upon learning of his son Absalom's death, When David heard. Allegri's Miserere concerns the belief in a higher power and the submission to it. Set to Psalm 51, the work was recognized by its composer and the Vatican as being of such beauty that its publishing was forbidden. No score was to leave the Papal Chapel. The child Mozart was famously shown the score, and he copied it from memory in the 1770s and in effect released this remarkable work to the wider world.

Songlist: Stabat mater, motet for 8 voices, Miserere mei Deus (Psalm 51), How Are the Mighty Fallen, When David heard (O my son Absalom),, Lamentations (of Jeremiah), O vos omnes, Nymphes des bois/Requiem aeternam/Deploration de la Mort de Jehan Ockeghem, O vos omnes, Super flumina Babylonis, Absalon, Fili Mi, Civitas sancti tui (also anthem 'Bow Thine ear, O Lord'), When David Heard That Absalom Was Slain,, Vox in Rama

Choir of Clare College : Ralph Vaughan Williams: Folk Songs of the Four Seasons

Review: Both the Folk Songs of the Four Seasons and this arrangement of In Windsor Forest are world premiere recordings. The Folk Songs of the Four Seasons is a substantial work by Vaughan Williams, over 40 minutes long, for women's chorus and orchestra. It is the most significant of his works never to have been recorded in any format. The Folk Songs of the Four Seasons was commissioned by the Women's Institute and first performed in 1950. The work has a Prologue and four sections: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The coupling is the rare arrangement for women's voices, by Guthrie Foote and Vaughan Williams, of the Cantata In Windsor Forest based on choruses from the opera Sir John in Love. This new Albion recording is issued to mark the 90th birthday of Sir David Willcocks on 30 December, 2009. Sir David is world famous for his recordings for EMI and for his work at King's College, Cambridge and the Bach Choir. For Sir David to record another major Vaughan Williams disc at the age of almost 90 is remarkable in itself and will ensure national and international interest in this recording.

Songlist: Prologue. To the Ploughboy, Spring. Early in the Spring, Spring. The Lark in the Morning , Spring. May Song , Summer. Summer is a-coming in / The Cuckoo, Summer. The Sprig of Thyme , Summer. The Sheep Shearing , Summer. The Green Meadow , Autumn. John Barleycorn , Autumn. The Unquiet Grave , Autumn. An Acre of Land, Winter. Children's Christmas Song, Winter. Choir of Ormond College : Barber: Choral Music

Review: Setting texts for chorus or solo songs occupied Samuel Barber throughout his creative life. In particular he sought out English and Irish writers, many of whose melancholic and nostalgic texts aptly matched his own musically romantic persuasion. A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map is a disturbing setting of a poem by Stephen Spender describing the death of a soldier in the Spanish Civil War, during which the poet had spent time in Spain. The elegiac and now extraordinarily popular Adagio for Strings is heard in the composer's own choral version, Agnus Dei, to words from the Latin Mass. God's Grandeur is one of Barber's most ambitious and advanced unaccompanied settings

Songlist: A Stopwatch and an Ordnance Map, Op. 15, Under The Willow Tree (from Vanessa), Twelfth Night, Op. 42, No. 2, To be Sung on the Water, Op. 42, No. 2, The Monk and His Cat, Agnus Dei, Reincarnations, Op. 16, The Virgin Martyrs, Op. 8, No. 1, Let Down the Bars, O Death, Op. 8, No. 2, Heaven-haven, Op. 13, No. 1, Sure on This Shining Night, Op. 13, No. 3, Chorale for Ascension day (Easter Chorale), Two Choruses from Antony and Cleopatra, Op. 40, God's Grandeur

Choir of S. Krivobokov : Along The Street

Review: The unfortunate limitation of people only slightly familiar with Russian folk songs to assume that the male choir or chorus is the only vocal vehicle, can now have their horizons expanded with this mixed choir directed by S. Krivobokov. Recorded live at Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, you will have the glory of hearing some of the finest voices in all of Russia. You will be regaled with a smattering of familiar tunes in the robust male vocal tradition such as "The Wild Steppe" and "Dense Unknown Taiga" on which the women's voices will be relegated to creating the sweetness which typically tenor's provided in the all male ensembles. However you will also find women's voices in leads of unparalleled beauty and at other times the lead is shared by men and women duets before the entire chorus is brought into the songs to create the robust fullness that is unique to Russian music. If you have only one recording of Russian Folk Songs in your library, let it be this one!

Songlist: The WIld Steppe, In Dark Woods, Dense Unknown Taiga, A Handbell, I wish I Hadn't Known You, My Love, Evening Bells, Along the Street, It's Foggy, Do Pass Over, Storm, A Girl In the Pine-Forest, Twelve Robbers, In the Smithy, Steppe Around, Not the Wind Bends the Branch, Don't Reproach Me, Kalinka

Choir of the Moscow Patriarchate : Russian Folk Songs

Review: The Patriarchal Choir, Moscow was formed in 1983, and consists of professional singers, both men and women. The choir take part in the services of the Moscow Church of the Resurrection, basing its work on old Russian choral tradition, from the 17th century to works of bortnyansky, Rachmaninov and others. The Choir began touring abroad in 1987. "Folk Songs" features 17 a cappella songs; some of our favorites are "Down the River Mother Volga," "In The dark forest," "The bell tolls," "O, the sweet night," "Do not reproach me, do not blame," "The troika-mail is running," "Along the river" and "Dark Eyes." There is tremendous depth of feeling here; wonderful solos supported by solid background harmonies. A powerful and moving CD!

Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge : Baltic Exchange

Review: With choral music at the heart of the musical life of the Baltics it is not surprising that the medium has been a central preoccupation for many of their composers. A degree of isolation from international trends in new music (frequently turning into outright proscription) meant that the centre of gravity for composers in the west of the Soviet Union was very different from that of their colleagues beyond the Iron Curtain. And while there is certainly no such thing as a pan-Baltic style-this recording offers only a glimpse of the choral riches to be found in these three tiny countries-all the composers on the disc share a number of characteristics: a sure-footed handling of choral orchestration, lucidity of texture, a pragmatic use of 'avant-garde' effects (shorn of their ideological baggage), a fondness for cluster-chords and diatonically saturated harmony, and the frequent use of ostinatos. Stephen Layton has single-handedly brought many of these composers to the attention of audiences and choirs in the West-and through his sensitive and inspirational direction, has won many fans for this repertoire. Together with his brilliant young choir, who sing this repertoire with 'passion and purity', he is the ideal guide to this beautiful and enchanting music.

Songlist: Missa Rigensis, Kyrie eleison, Gloria, Gloria. Domine Deus, Gloria. Quoniam tu solus sanctus , Credo in unum Deum, Credo in unum Deum. Deum de Deo, Credo in unum Deum. Crucifixus, Credo in Spiritum Sanctum, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Vakars (Evening), Lugsana (Prayer), Debess (Heaven), Benedicto, Angelis suis Deus, Laudibus in sanctis, Pater noster

Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge : Beyond All Mortal Dreams onsale

Review: On Beyond All Mortal Dreams, Stephen Layton and his acclaimed Trinity College Choir perform a magnificent selection of American a cappella choral works. The recording is a showcase of little-known American composers unearthed by Layton during his travels. These distinctive and luminous compositions illustrate the context in which better-known composers such as Lauridsen and Whitacre - already championed by Layton - learned their craft. The choir is in perfect voice here, and their purity of tone, flawless intonation and depth of feeling are truly exceptional. This wonderful disc is a must for all choral music fans.

Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge : Choral Music of Edward Elgar

Review: Richard Marlow's final recording as director of the Trinity College choir (Cambridge, England)! The choral works of Edward Elgar are gems of the English Romantic tradition. Under the direction of Marlow, the choir of Trinity College was the first mixed choir in a Cambridge college. As an adult mixed choir, they have the distinctive, clear English sound we admire, but with the power that only mature voices can produce. Highly recommended!

Review: This recording represents forty years of Peter Hallock's work. While organist and choirmaster of St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle, he composed an impressive array of original choral works in the Anglican tradition, including both large and small-scale works for choir, with and without instruments. Often dissonant and difficult, many of these works are recorded here for the first time. The CD opens with the triumphant anthem "Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem" for choir, organ, brass and percussion. Led by Richard Sparks, Choral Arts Northwest gives glorious performances of Hallock's stunning music.

Songlist: Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem, Show Us Your Mercy, O Lord, Dominus Regnavit, There Is a Stream, The Song of Moses, Exsultate Deo, Phoenix, Gloria in Excelsis Deo, Qui Tollis, Quoniam, Commit Your Way to the Lord, Behold, the Eye of the Lord, Whom Should We Love Like Thee

Choral Arts Northwest : Mornings Like This

Review: The "Pure Sound" of Choral Arts under their new director, Robert Bode presents several world premiere recordings, including The Dream Keeper, a piece in four movements, each featuring a different text from Langston Hughes. Other pieces feature the poetry of Dylan Thomas, Walt Whitman and the conductor. In the recording they explore "Mornings," not just the actual beginning of the day, but also more metaphorical associations, such as renewal, childhood, and beginnngs. There are some very familiar things on this CD, including the spiritual "My Lord, What a Mornin'" and the American hymn "Shall We Gather at the River?" The CD also features 5 previously unrecorded pieces, including "The Dream Keeper" by William Averitt and the first recording of the version for chorus and piano of John Corigliano's "Fern Hill."

Songlist: My Lord What A Mornin', Sunrise, The Waking, Fern Hill, Dawn, A Child's Prayer, In Dreams, The Dream Keeper, Dream Variations, As I Grew Older, Song, Will there really be a morning, Beautiful River

Choral Arts Northwest : The Light Of Stars - Randall Thompson

Review: 30-strong, mixed-voice, Seattle-based Choral Arts (formerly Choral Arts Northwest), founded by artistic director Richard Sparks, is one of the outstanding chamber choirs in the United States. Focusing primarily on romantic and contemporary music, the choir's repertoire has ranged from Renaissance music to contemporary Swedish works. Randall Thompson achieved iconic status for choral works like "Frostiana" and the hugely popular anthem "Alleluia" in the middle part of the 20th century. Included here are 14 pieces, some favorites: the world premiere recordings of "Antiphon" and "Five Love Songs," "The Last Invocation" (based on words by Walt Whitman), the previously mentioned "Alleluia," "Vitas hinnuleo," and the title tune (based on words by Longfellow). Some light accompaniment. Beautiful, romantic music performed by one of America's finest choirs!

Choral Cross-Ties : Lauridsen - The Complete Choral Cycles

Review: Choral Cross-Ties, a mixed 24-singer chorus directed by Bruce Browne who founded the group in 1985, bring us 3 choral cycles by composer Morten Lauridsen, "Mid-Winter Songs," on poems by Robert Graves; "Madrigali: Six Fire-Songs," on Italian Renaissance poems; and "Les Chansons Des Roses," on poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Reading the beautiful poetry which inspired Lauridsen in the extensive liner notes, the Graves in English, the Madrigali in Italian and the Chansons in French (all with translations), adds to our appreciation and feeling for the music. Lightly accompanied on piano, "The Complete Choral Cycles" is an extensive, demanding work made to look easy by a wonderfully versatile chorus.

Songlist: Lament for Pasiphae, Like Snow, She Tells Her Love While Half Asleep, Mid-Winter Waking, Intercession in Late October, Ov'e, Lass', Il Bel Viso, Quando Son Piu Lontan, Amor, Io Sento L'alma, Io Piango, Luci Serene E Chiare, Se Per Havervi, Oime, En Une Seule Fleur, Contre Qui, Rose, De Ton Reve Trop Plein, La Rose Complete, Dirait-On

Christ Church Cathedral Choir : Egon Wellesz

Review: A Catholic convert from Judaism, Egon Wellesz composed a significant amount of sacred music including five masses, two of which--the first and the last--feature on this disc. Wellesz's operas of the 1920s contain a significant amount of virtuoso choral writing, and this quality carries over into his church music, although on the whole they are written in a simpler, more traditionally tonal idiom.

Songlist: Mass in F Op. 51, I Sing of a Maiden, Offertorium in Ascensione Domini, Missa Brevis, To Sleep Op. 94

Clerks' Group : Dufay

Review: This is the third disc recorded by The Clerks' Group for their Signum Records trilogy. The series explores repertoire in the medieval period and culminates with a selection of works by Guillaume Dufay, found in one of the great anthologies of 15th century music: the manuscript Bologna, Civico Museo Bibliografico Musicale, MS Q15 (or "Q15" as it is known by its friends). The Q15 manuscript contains examples of almost every conceivable musical genre of the period by a vast array of composers. The Clerks' Group has chosen to perform works by a single composer, but still the variety of forms and styles on offer is bewildering. Guillaume Dufay was a composer who witnessed and contributed to most of the revolutionary changes to occur in music composition in the 15th century. The album includes some of the earlier works so often neglected from Dufay's repertoire, and goes on to explore compositions that demonstrate this revolutionary genius. Some compositional techniques celebrated by The Clerks' Group's performance include the playful exchange of Dufay's song-like melodies between the vocal lines; and the use of mensural canon, where the same melody is sung by all voices but at slightly different speeds. These are just a few examples of the radical nature of Dufay's music as demonstrated on this recording. The Clerks' Group brings immense diversity to the music and its performance. Their refreshing approach displays sincere empathy and passion for this astonishing repertory.

Songlist: Vasilissa, ergo gaude, Kyrie Fons bonitatis, O beate Sebastiane, Gloria (Bol. Q15 no. 107), O gemma, lux et speculum, Credo (Bol. Q15 no. 108), Supremum est mortalibus, Sanctus & Benedictus (Bol. Q15 no. 104), Inclita stella maris, Agnus Dei (Bol. Q15 no. 105), Gloria "Spiritus et alme", O sancte Sebastiane

Clerks' Group : Guillaume de Machaut and Music from the Ivrea Codex

Review: The Clerks' Group is a highly sophisticated ensemble of young singers whose immaculately polished performances show Machaut's extraordinary lyrical gift - even in the genre of the motet, so often thought of as abstract and unapproachable. Edward Wickham clearly views Machaut as a medieval romantic, drawing out the finely wrought lines and wallowing in the luscious sonorities of his music; and the effect is enhanced by a resonant acoustic, though the recorded sound is somewhat over-glossy. Each singer has a naturally light, straight-toned voice and can effortlessly flat over the vocal lines like 'a feather on the breath of God'. The highlights of this disc are three motets by Machaut based on love songs in performances which sound every bit as poetic and expressive as 18th-century Lieder; and the rapturous Marian motet Felix virgo / Inviolata genitrix, in which the group's intimately veiled sound is especially apt. Alongside the Machaut works are a handful of anonymous motets from the Ivrea Codex, a major 14th-century source containing some fine compositions, if never quite matching Machaut's genius. With the caveat that a few motets go a long way, this is a truly haunting collection.

Songlist: Sanctus: Sanans fragilia , Kyrie , Gloria: Et versus homo , Dame/Fins cuers doulz, Trop plus est bele/Biayte paree de valour , Lasse!/Se j'aim mon loyal ami , Credo, Tu qui gregem/Plange, regni respublica , Christe qui lux/Veni creator spiritus , Felix virgo/Inviolata genitrix , Amours/Faus samblant , Post missarum sollempnia/Postmisse modulamina , Sanctus, Clap, clap / Sus Robin, Qui es promesse / Ha! Fortune, Martyrum / Diligenter inquiramus

Collegium Vocale : J S Bach - Mit Friend and Freud

Review: The theme of death and dying was one of the favourite themes of Bach and his contemporaries in their cantatas - that "musical theology" which was held in such high esteem in deeply Lutheran Northern Germany. Composed between 1723 and 1725, the three cantatas on this record treat the subject from different angles: the expectation of a "marvellous dawn", the final departure in peace and joy, and the vanity of earthly existence. There is "no consolation on earth", but only in heaven - what other composer, what other artist succeeded in expressing this consolation with such depth, or with such obviousness as Bach?

Songlist: Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin, Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz

Concordia Choir : Come To The Living Water onsale

Review: The Concordia Christmas Concert has always sought to illuminate through music, art and the spoken word the rich tapestry of parable, theology, and the story that is the interaction of God and humankind that is found in the Holy Bible. Throughout Biblical history, Christ is referred to as the living water. "Come to the Living Water" is about the image of Christ and the coming of Christ into this barren and thirsty world. Concordia's world-renowned musical groups and ensembles, The Concordia Choir, The Concordia College Orchestra, The Concordia Chapel Choir, Mannerchor and Cantabile, and Bel Canto, bring us this magnificent annual live narrated Christmas event in 26 parts. The title cut, "Come to the Living Water," is a dramatic, powerful depiction of the creation of earth, followed by "The Heavens Are Telling of the Glory of God" and the hymn "All Creatures of our God and King." The story of Christ's birth is told with traditional carols like "Ave Maria," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," "What Child," "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly," and "I Saw Three Ships," but also included are less familiar pieces like Philipp Nicolai's lovely a cappella piece, "Wake, Awake," Rene Clausen's "Calm On The Listening Ear of Night," Eleanor Daly's "Sunny Bank," the Swedish carol "When Christmas Morn is Dawning," and Knut Nystedt's "Cry Out and Shout." Mostly orchestrally accompanied, the joyous "Come to the Living Water" is the next best thing to being at this wonderful event!

Songlist: Fantasia on "Une Jeune Pucelle", Come to the Living Water, The Heavens Are Telling the Glory of God, All Creatures of Our God and King, This is my Father's World, Wake, Awake, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Calm, on the Listening Ear of Night, Lirum Lirum, Sunny Bank, Silent Nigt, What Child, As Lately We Watched, Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, Sing We Now, When Christmas Morn is Dawning, Still, Still, Still, I saw Three Ships, Gaudete, Go Tell It on The Mountain, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Cry Out and Shout, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Compline

Concordia Choir : Faire is the Heaven

Review: F. Melius Christiansen founded the 65-strong mixed voice Concordia Choir at Moorhead, MN's Concordia College in 1911, then led the choir until handing it over to his son Paul in 1937. This veteran, prolific choir boasts over 22 finely-crafted CDs and DVDs in the catalog and has long been one of our favorites and best-sellers. Concordia Choir : Fifty Years with Paul Christiansen

Review: Continuing the tradition of his father, F. Melius Christiansen, who founded the St. Olaf Choir of Northfield, MN, Paul J. Christiansen took over the direction of the Concordia Choir in 1937, and made choir members used to working hard, work even harder. Still, 400 students would compete for the 60 to 65 places in the Choir, and the annual tours became more extensive and acclaimed. The Choir's participation in the annual Concordia Christmas Concerts, seen, with their huge murals, by over 20,000 people a year in the midwest, added to their reputation of excellence. There are two discs here, a collection of the Choir's finest performances. Of the 19 songs on Disc 1, some favorites: "Kyrie Eleison," "Who With Grieving Soweth," "Ascendit Deus," "This Is My Father's World," "Mexican Christmas Procession," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," the folk song "Cindy" and the spiritual "Set Down Servant." Melius' own song, that concluded every concert, the lovely "Beautiful Savior." A tribute to a remarkable man, who directed and molded an exceptional Choir, one of the best of all time!
