Stile Antico : Music For Compline

Review: For their spectacular debut recording, the exciting young British early-music vocal group Stile Antico presents a program of English Renaissance music associated with the office of Compline (absorbed by the Anglican Church into Evensong), the service that ends the monastic liturgical day. A who's-who of 16th-century British composers, including Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and John Sheppard, are represented here by hymns, antiphons, responsories, motets and psalms-the occasion not only for music of intimacy, elegance and reflection, but for flights of breathtaking canonic and contrapuntal invention and harmonic daring.

Songlist: Libera Nos I & II - Shepard, Salva Nos, Domine - Plainchant, Christe, Qui Lux Es Et Dies - Byrd, In Pace In Idipsum - Shepard, In Manus Tuas - Tallis, Jesu Salvator Saeculi Verbum - Shepard, In Manus Tuas I - Shepard, In Manus Tuas II & III - Shepard, Miserere Nostri Domine - Plainchant, Miserere Nostri Domine - Tallis, Miserere Mihi Domine - Byrd, In Pace In Idipsum - Tallis, Christe Qui Lux Es Et Dies - White, Veni, Domine - Plainchant, Nunc Dimittis - Byrd, Te Lucis Ante Terminum - Tallis, Gaude, Virgo Mater Christi - Aston

Stile Antico : Song of Songs

Review: The beautiful and often erotic poetry of the Song of Songs found some of its most sumptuous settings in the motets of Palestrina, Lassus, Victoria and other Continental 16th-century masters. Sung here by Britain's "brightest new stars" of Renaissance polyphony, the singers of Stile Antico, these staples of the choral repertory have never before sounded so vital or texturally rich.

Songlist: Ego Flos Campi, Osculetur Me, Antiphon: Dum Esset Rex, Surge, Propera Amica Mea, Quam Pulchra Es, Antiphon: Nigra Sum, Veni, Dilecte Mi, Vadam Et Circuibo, Alleluia: Tota Pulchra Es, Ego Flos Campi, Nigra Sum, Antiphon: Laeva Eius, Hortus Conclusus, Nigra Sum, Antiphon: Speciosa Facta es, Veni, Dilecte Mi, Trahe Me Post Te, Antiphon: Iam Hiems Transiit, Vidi Speciosam

Sveshknikov Choir and Volga Choir : Folk Songs Of Old Russia

Review: The Volga Choir and the Sveshknikov Choir are two of the large (a hundred or more voices) vocal ensembles who are famous not only in Russia, where they tour extensively, but increasingly in musical centers of the Western world. Their extensive repertory of folk songs tell of shared work, the courage of folk heroes, communal joy at births, marriages and harvests, wretchedness because of conscription or war. 16 powerful, deep-bassed songs, some favorites: "Evening Bells," "The Broad and Rolling Steppe," the lovely "Do Not Blame Me," "The Pear Tree," "Between Steep Banks," "The Drake Went Courting," "Aliona," "Snowfall" and "Do Not Revive Memories of the Past." Some light accompaniment with accordion, harmonica and other instruments. These are songs of deep feeling and strength with some amazing solos and powerful harmonies. "Folk Song" is an authentic Russian treat!

Songlist: Evening Bells, From a Distant Land, The Broad and Rolling Steppe, Alone I Stand on the Road, At the Blacksmiths, Do Not Blame Me, The Pear Tree, Samara Town, Between Steep Banks, Down the Volga River, The Drake Went Courting, Aliona, Singing in the Choir, Snowfall, The Lonely Accordian, Do Not Revive Memories of the Past

Swedish Radio Choir : Visions and Non Thoughts

Review: The Swedish Radio Choir comprises 32 professional singers. Since Eric Ericson took over in the 1950s, it has become one of the world's most outstanding choirs - a universal tool of voices capable of delivering the sweetest a cappella tones or of performing an oratorio with enormous power and elasticity. The collective leaves room for each individual form of expression, creating a sound that is unique in the world of choral music. Being one of the world's foremost choirs entails collaborating with the very cream of choirmasters and musicians. On this recording they join with Swedish choirmaster marvel Ragnar Bohlin, leader of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus since 2007, and world-leading trombonist Christian Lindberg - featured here as both soloist and composer. Together they perform In Time of Pestilence, the evocative choral work by American composer and Pulitzer Prize winner Ned Rorem; Visions and Non Thoughts and Vid sista udden by Christian Lindberg for trombone, recitator and mixed choir; Fallandet by Thomas Jennefelt; Lighten mine eyes by Bo Hansson; and muo:aa:yiy::oum, Anders Hillborg's phonetic study in sound. This is the premiere recording on CD of these compositions by Lindberg, Jennefelt and Hansson.

Songlist: Adieu, Farewell Earth's Bliss, Rich Men, Trust not in Wealth, Beauty is But a Flower, Strength Stoops Unto the Grave, With With his Wantonness, Haste Therefore Each Degree, Visions and Non Thoughts, Fallandet, Vid Sista Udden, Lighten Mine Eyes, muocaaeyiywcoum

Swedish Radio Choir : Voices Of Nature

Review: This uniquely named work has moments of wondrous luminosity, particularly in its second and fourth movements. The second, which has a hypnotic slow lilt to it, even evokes the sensuality of the Poulenc Gloria (closing section), a most unlikely kinship. There are many inspiring moments and many memorable textures, and any worries the composer may have had about Western performers' response to this music would have been quickly dispelled by Tonu Kaljuste and the outstanding Swedish Radio Choir. Their technical assurance is so great that one can easily admire their powerful identification with the music, while Kaljuste clearly has a superb ear for texture, balancing convincingly Schnittke's often densely complex choral writing. The wordless Voices of Nature is a short relatively simple work for ten women's voices and vibraphone. Its coolness, however, makes a welcome foil to the intensity of the Concerto. Then follow three works by Estonian Arvo Part, and many listeners may experience some surprise at the cheerful, almost humorous nature of Dopo la Vittoria. The title means After the Victory, the text telling the story of how Ambrose, Bishop of Milan in the 4th century, composed the hymn Te Deum and sang it with St. Augustine when baptising him. It is a blithe work, with a wonderfully solemn 'Amen' just near the end, before the good-humoured music returns to round the work off.

Songlist: Concerto For Choir, Voice of Nature, Dopo La Vittoria, Bogorodiste Djevo, I Am The True Vine

Swedish Voices Chamber Choir : Swedish Rhapsody

Review: A generous collection of 26 finely-crafted folk, spiritual and traditional songs, with some light accompaniment, all sung in Swedish, by the acclaimed mixed-voice Swedish Voices Chamber Choir. Some favorites: "Uti ar hage (Out in the Meadows)," "Och jungfrun hon gar I dansen (The Maiden dancing in the Ring)," "Si god afton och god kvall (Evening Greeting Song)," "Tre korvisor (Three Choral Ballads)," ""Lustwins wijsa (Lustwin's Ballad)," "Sommarmarsch fran Osterbotten (Summer March from Osterbotten)," "Brusala," and the soulful "Sverige (Sweden)". There are a few all-instrumental songs here, but largely amazingly beautiful choral music from Sweden's finest! Nicely designed liner notes with info about the music.

Songlist: Stjarntandningen (The Star Lighting), Psaltare och lyra (Psaltery and Harp), Aftonen (Eventide), Swensk rapsodi (Swedish Rhapsody), Gladjens blomster (The Flowers of Delight), Uti var hage (Out in the Meadows), Och jungfrun hon gar I dansen (The Maiden Dancing in the Ring), Gammal sangpolska (Old Singing Polska), Vi salde vara hemman (Emigrant Song), Si god afton och god kvall (Evening Greeting Song), Varmlandsvisan (Thou lovely Varmland), Pingst (Whitsuntide), September, I Seaillets have (In The Pleasure Garden of the Seraglio), Havde jeg, o havde jeg en Datterson, o ja (Now If I Had a Grandson), Kung Liljekonvalje (King Lily-of-the-Valley), Idyll, Humoresk (Humoreque), Vaggsang (Lullaby), Polska, Lustwins wijsa (Lustwin's Ballad, Sommarmarsch fran Osterbotten (Summer March from Osterbotten), Sommarspalm (Summer Psalm), Forvarskvall (An Evening Early in the Spring), Brusala, Sverige (Sweden)

Swingle Singers : Sinfonia NPS

Review: Eclectic, surprising composer Luciano Berio, born in 1925, wrote "Sinfonia," for eight voices and orchestra as a surreal, often dissonant interplay between voices and instruments in six parts, "I-", "II-O King," "III"-In ruhig fliessender Bewegung," "IV-", "V-" (Regis Pasquier, violin solo, New Swingle Singers, conducted by Ward Swingle, and "Eindrucke." A strange and powerful collection by the eclectic Berio, beautifully performed by the interaction of choral and instrumental giants.

Songlist: I -, II - O King, III - In ruhig fliessender Bewegung, IV -, V - (Featuring New Swingle Singers; conductor: Ward Swingle), Ein Drucke

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : Elliot Carter - Choral Works

Review: Last year, in celebration of Elliot Carter's 100th birthday, the thoroughbred of choral ensembles performed and recorded a program of the great man's complete works for choir - a cappella, men's voices, and accompanied. Now, for the first time, a thoroughly modern recording of Carter's complete works for choir is available - and in performances that will serve as the template for all future ensembles. Once again, the SWR Vocal Ensemble under the direction of Marcus Creed has distinguished itself as one of the most adventurous and capable choirs performing in the world today!

Songlist: Tarentella, Let's Be Gray, Emblems: Maryland, Virginia, Caroline, Emblems: When it is All Over, Emblems: By the Great River, Heart Not So Heavy as Mine, Musicians Wrestle Everywhere, To Music, The Defense of Corinth, Harvest Home

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : French Choral Music

Review: Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Andre Jolivet each wrote one composition for unaccompanied chorus. Olivier Messiaen produced two. His 1937 motet "O Sacrum Convivium" brings the mystifying sound of his organ works into the vocal medium, and 1948's "Cinq Rechants" has an esthetic all its own. Never before had anyone composed so radically for chorus. Andre Jolivet's 1953 "Epithalame" is similarly groundbreaking. The renowned composer and director Rupert Huber leads talented, 37-strong mixed-voice SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart in this difficult, striking material. Here are 3 pieces by Debussy (our favorite: ), 3 by Maurice Ravel (our favorite: "Ronde,") 5 by Messiaen (Niokhama palalan souki), 3 by Jolivet (Au son de sa lyre, Allegro maestoso"), and one by Chausson, "Ballata pour quatour vocal op. 29." Unlike any choral music we've ever heard-stunning!

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : Gioacchino Rossini

Review: The Petite Petite Messe solennelle is one of Rossini's last large-scale works. Even though a late work, and a religious work at that, Rossini manages to bring his sparkling wit and operatic flair to the proceedings. The present recording is the first CD recording of the original version for four voices accompanied by two pianos and harmonium. Rupert Huber and the SWR Vocal ensemble Stuttgart perform with style and commitment bringing their enthusiasm for "New Music" to this rediscovered masterwork.

Songlist: Kyrie, Gloria, Gloria in Excelcis Deo, Gratias agimus tibi, Domine Deus, Qui Tollis, Quoniam, Cum Sanctus Spiritu, Credo, Credo in unum Deum, Crucifixus, Et Resurrexit, Preludoio Religioso, Sanctus, O Salutaris Hostia, Agnus Dei

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : Gyorgy Kurtag - Complete Choral Works

Review: Rare recordings of the music of this popular contemporary composer. Amazing choral virtuosity from the SWR Vocal Ensemble and director Marcus Creed. Gyorgy Kurtag was long overshadowed by his fellow Hungarian Gyorgy Ligeti, but in recent years his music has become far better known. Kurtag was the teacher of the renowned pianists Andras Schiff and Zoltan Kocsis at the Liszt Academy in Budapest.

Songlist: Omaggio a Luigi Nono op. 16, Eight Choruses to Poems by Dezo Tandori op. 23, Songs of Despair and Sorrow op. 18

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : Luigi Nono

Review: Few composers have exercised as vigorous a political conscience as did the late Luigi Nono. Beginning his career as a dedicated 12-tone composer (and Schoenberg's son-in-law), Nono consciously sought to revolutionize both music and society in his large output. Significantly, many of Nono's compositions were highly expressive and individualistic settings of texts from authors as diverse as Nietzsche and Latino Labor Leader, Caesar Chavez, to the anonymous inscriptions of political prisoners. The miracle of Nono's music is the tremendous beauty and intensity he was able to forge using such disparate material. The compositions on this disc, masterfully performed by Rupert Huber and the Vokalensemble Stuttgart, are definitive readings of some of the most difficult choral music EVER composed. And yet, despite all the avant garde techniques, the sonic impact of these scores has the otherworldly beauty of Gregorian chant. Make no mistake; this is an essential recording of music by one of the 20th century's greatest composers!

Songlist: Da Un Diario Italiano , Cori Di Didone , Das Atmende Klarsein

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : Rachmaninov Vespers

Review: Rachmaninov's passionate setting of the Russian "All Night Vigil" is to the Eastern Orthodox liturgy what Bach's B Minor Mass is to the West. Consulting Rachmaninov's manuscripts and correspondence, and working with Russian language and cultural specialists, the virtuoso SWR Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Marcus Creed, has drawn upon every artistic source available to make this new recording of Rachmaninov's transcendent Vespers.

SWR Stuttgart Vocal Ensemble : Schumann, Robert - Romances and Ballads

Review: Robert Schumann's a cappella choral works have established themselves on the concert stage far less than those of Mendelssohn or Brahms. He himself, however, accorded them a much higher position among his works, writing that they were composed "with true passion," and that nothing of their kind existed. The 37 mixed voices of SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart show us exactly what he was talking about. Here we have "Romances and Ballads I, II, III and IV, five songs in each, and op. 69 and op. 91, six tunes in each, for a total of 32 cuts. These are impassioned, romantic vocal gems. Some favorites: "Schon Rohtraut," "Ungewitter," "Schnitter Tod," "Im Walde," "Der Schmid," "Der Sanger," "Romanze vom Gansebuben," "Brautgesang," "Tamburin" and "Jager Wohlgemuth." Masterful compositions by Schumann, wonderful, spirited interpretations by SWRVS. Recommended!

Songlist: Romances and Ballads I op. 67, Romances and Ballads II op. 75, Romances and Ballads III op. 145, Romances and Ballads IV op. 146, Romances and Ballads op. 69, Romances and Ballads op. 91

Tallis Scholars : Allegri Miserere

Review: The Allegri Miserere, probably the most famous piece of this period is usually coupled with other well known pieces. This recording has the advantage of including a couple of less-known, but stunning works (okay, the Palestrina is quite popular, but even so...). As usual, the Tallis Scholars give a polished performance. Altogether, it's a great recording,

Tallis Scholars : English Madrigals

Review: To celebrate their 25th anniversary, sacred music specialists the Tallis Scholars re-released on their own Gimell label a disc that has been a cipher in their catalog for a long time, English Madrigals, recorded in 1982 for EMI's Classics for Pleasure imprint and unavailable for so long as to be virtually forgotten. It is heartening to see the list of singers active under Peter Philips' direction in that bygone era -- Emily van Evera, Margaret Philpot, Michael Chance, and Andrew King among them -- all names unknown in 1982 that have figured very prominently in the early music boom soon to follow. As the original Classics for Pleasure LP, though digitally recorded, ran short by twenty-first century standards, Gimell has expanded it through including the odd pieces used to fill out an early release, Tomkins: The Great Service. As one comes to expect from the Tallis Scholars in music of a more serious kind, the performances of the English Madrigals are terrific; in the notes, Philips states that their ultimate single-mindedness might have slackened somewhat "if there hadn't been so much first-rate sacred music to explore."

Songlist: Hark, All Ye Lovely Saints, Hark, Alleluia, Phyllis, I Fain Would Die Now, Cruel Madame, Ah Dear Heart, Draw On Sweet Night, All Creatures Now, Sleep, Fleshly Birth, Carters, Now Cast Down, Woe Is Me, Though Amaryllis Dance, The Silver Swan, When David Heard, Then David Mourned , Almighty God, The Fountain Of All Wisdom , Woe Is Me, Be Strong And Of A Good Courage, O Sing Unto The Lord A New Song, O God, The Proud Are Risen Against Me

Tallis Scholars : Essential Tallis Scholars

Review: One of the most noted groups in the world of Renaissance music, the Tallis Scholars bring us a compilation of their work from 1980-1998. "The Essential Talllis Scholars," a two CD set, gives us an introduction to the vast amounts of music from this period and their discography. Disc 1 contains motets by such composers as Palestrina, Josquin and Lassus. The opening piece is the incomparably gorgeous "Miserere" by Allegri, which should be in everybody's library. Disc 2 is comprised of works by English composers, such as Tallis and includes Byrd's "Mass for 5 Voices." If you are new to the works of the Tallis Scholars or to the world of Renaissance music, this is a great place to start.

Songlist: Meserere, Ave Maria for double choir, Sicut lilium I, Praeter rerum seriem, Pater peccavi, Ego flos campi, Tota pulchra es, Descendi in hortum meum, Alma redemptoris mater, Salve regina, Ave regina caelorum, Gloria from Missa Et ecce terrae motus , Media vita , In manus tuas, O nata lux, Audivi vocem, Exaudiat te Dominus, Ah, Robin, Salve regina, Mass for 5 Voices

Tallis Scholars : Josquin

Review: This recording presents the only two Masses by Josquin which are entirely based on canons; a single melody stated in different voice-parts at different times so that it overlaps with itself. To write this kind of music may sound academic to the modern mind: who is interested in mathematical scaffolding which most people can't hear? But Josquin was interested in it - as were many later composers from Bach to Brahms to Webern - and I knew that, like every composer of genius, he would relish the challenge. -Peter Phillips

Songlist: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei I, II & III, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei I, II & III, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei I, II & III

Tallis Scholars : Lamenta

Review: Haunting performances by the Tallis Scholars of music reflecting the dark and anguished emotions of Holy Week. As Easter music, this CD is a perfect addition to the St Matthew and St John Passions. - "Turning to the Tallis Scholars is a reminder of how supremely good Peter Phillips and his singers really are. It is like the move from an ordinary family car to a high-octane Ferrari, a magnificently honed machine in which every component functions superbly." (Gramophone)

Tallis Scholars : Palestrina Masses - Missa Benedicta es

Review: The reputation of a composer of Palestrina's enormous output is necessarily based on a selection of his work. Since there have been no recordings, no offprints, no very accessible discussions of the Missa Benedicta es, it has been impossible for the work to become widely admired. It shows a side of Palestrina's writing which is not fully recognized: his indebtedness to Josquin. In addition, apart from its remarkable music, it has an important place in musical history. If ever it was thought necessary to prove that Palestrina early in his life gained much from coming under the influence of the great Franco-Flemish composers, this resplendent parody mass shows how important they were to him and how he could turn their idiom to his own ends. 25 years ago, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars made their debut with this recording. To celebrate this milestone, Gimell offers this limited-edition budget priced reissue.

Songlist: Plainchant: Benedicta es , Benedicta es, Missa Benedicta es, Kyrie , Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei I & II, Missa Nasce la gioja mia, Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei I & II

Tallis Scholars : Thomas Tallis - Spem In Alium

Review: "Spem in alium" is one of the most remarkable pieces ever written. This forty-voice motet for eight five-part choirs has carefully constructed counterpoint in alternation with striking homophony. No one is certain of the reasons that led Tallis to write something so bold. The large number of choirs creates an amazing stereo-effect and, therefore, is often sung surrounding the audience. The remaining motets on this recording are no less astounding. His merits as a composer must be remembered, as he remained court composer, despite being Catholic, under the rule of Elizabeth I. As usual, the Tallis Scholars lend sheer beauty and clarity to this phenomenal music.

Songlist: Spem in alium, Sancte Deus, Salvator mundi, salva nos I, Salvator mundi, salva nos II, Gaude gloriosa, Miserere nostri, Loquebantur variis linguis

Tapiola Chamber Choir : Penderecki

Review: Avant-garde composer Krzysztof Penderecki, born in Poland in 1933, returned to more traditional musical forms by the early 1960s. The orchestration and scoring in his large vocal works is often highly adventurous, using dramatic devices such as shouting and speaking to great effect. The world-renowned Finnish Tapiola Chamber Choir performs 9 pieces of this dramatically beautiful sacred music: "Stabat Mater," "Two Choruses from the Passion According to St. Luke," "Sicut locutus est from Magnificat," "Agnus Dei," "Song of the Cherubim," "Veni creator," "Benedicamus Domino," and "Benedictus." Striking sacred choral works, made even more so by the clear, bell-like voices of the world-famous Tapiola Choir.

Taylor Festival Choir : This Is Thy Hour O Soul

Review: In our contemporary, frenetic society, the innate spirituality of our common existence is all-too-often overlooked. This is Thy Hour, O Soulfocuses on that spirituality with modern musical settings of texts both contemporary and ancient, Western and Eastern, sacred and secular, theological and philosophical. Called by critic Lindsay Koob a "rising star in the national choral scene," Taylor's choirs have been described as sounding "more musical than would seem possible," (Charleston Post and Courier) and have received numerous plaudits from critics and choral specialists for their technical proficiency, musicalty and beautiful sound production.

Songlist: On Meditation, A Clear Midnight, Magnificat, Nunc dimittis, The Last Invocation, The Unknown Region, To All, To Each, Festival Te Deum, Sing Ye Praises to Our King, Salmo 150, Water Night, Cloudburst, Prayer to the Father of Heaven, Ave Maria

Tenebrae : Figure Humaine

Review: Francis Poulenc is now considered to be among the most important composers of choral music of the 20th Century. Yet his early career reveals no trace of the dazzling and idiosyncratic unaccompanied choral textures so abundantly produced in the second half of his life. This new collection of Poulencās choral works is centered on his masterwork, the Figure Humaine. Even though it is only 20 minutes in length, the work is a supreme test of stamina, technical agility, range, aural skill and musicianship. The professional chamber choir Tenebrae (directed by former Kingās Singer Nigel Short) are more than capable of tackling this repertoire, and this disc promises to provide a new benchmark in interpretations of the work.

Songlist: Mass in G, Mass in G (part 2), Mass in G (part 3), Mass in G (part 4), Mass in G (part 5), Litanies a la Veirge Noire, Salve Regina, Un soir de neige, Figure Humaine, Quatre petites prieres de Saint Francois d'Assise

Tenebrae : Mother and Child

Review: This release takes its title from a new work written especially for the choir by Sir John Tavener. Mother and Child has a unique and personal history inspired- by one of the Tenebrae members' children. Playing in the garden, Samual McCosh and his mother Susan caught the eye of a visiting friend, poet Brian Keeble. The picture of mother and child in close union with one another so enchanted him that he began to write a poem based on that image. The resulting poem caught the attention of Sir John Tavener who, on reading it decided to set it to music and to dedicate it to Tenebrae. In its short existence, Tenebrae has made a considerable impact on the musical world with fresh and vital re-interpretations of classic works in the choral repertoire. On this recording, innovatory and lesser-known repertoire is drawn from contemporary sources. Alongside Mother and Child, this release features four further world-premiere recordings by composers Francis Pott, Alexander L'Estrange and Jeremy Filsell. Within this individual collection of choral music, which also includes works by Jonathan Dove, Richard Rodney Bennett and Giles Swayne, Tenebrae continues to chart out a new territory, which is rapidly establishing it as one of the most exciting choirs of our time.

Songlist: Seek him that maketh the seven stars, The souls of the righteous, Magnificat, Mother and Child, Lute-book lullaby, O be joyful in the Lord, The seasons of his mercies, My song is love unknown

Review: Path of Miracles, for a cappella choir, was commissioned by Tenebrae from Joby Talbot and premiered last year. The work is based on the most enduring route of Catholic pilgrimage - the great Pilgramage to Santiago. The four movements of Path of Miracles are titled with the names of the four main staging posts of the 'Camino Frances': I Roncesvalles; II Burgos; III Leon; IV Santiago. The 'Camino Frances' s the central axis of a network of pilgrimage routes to Santiago. Talbot's music has been performed by, amongst others, the London Sinfonietta, The BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Brunel Ensemble, Evelyn Glennie and The Duke Quartet. In addition, Talbot also writes for the big and small screen. Tenebrae : Paul Mealor - A Tender Light

Review: The sublime new album from the star composer of the Royal Wedding. Performed by the Tenebrae Choir and also features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra the album includes the moving A Spotless Rose and Ubi Caritas, performed at the Royal Wedding. "Paul Mealor has a deep connection with our choral heritage yet his works have immediacy and modernity. He has the rare gift of being able to create joyous melody within music that is both sincere and profound. This is an album with hints of Celtic mystery, moments of great solemnity, splendiferous singing and above all sumptuous tunes." - Gareth Malone - Choir Master and BAFTA Award-winning BBC Presenter of The Choir

Tenebrae : Prayers For Mankind

Review: Prayers for Mankind celebrates the life and writings of Father Alexander Men, a Russian Orthodox Christian priest who, whilst being little known outside of his home country during his lifetime, has come to be hailed as a saint and martyr by thousands all over the world. 2010 marks the anniversary of what would have been his 85th Birthday, as well as 20 years since his brutal assassination on the way to a Sunday morning service. Following years of religious suppression under the communist regime, Father Alexander Men emerged as a leading Christian and humanitarian figure in Russia, through radio and TV broadcasts and his prolific written works. These prayers, set by Russian composer Alexander Levine, capture the beauty and humanity of Men's view of the world, and is brought vividly to life by Nigel Short's professional chamber choir Tenebrae.

Songlist: Morning Prayer, A Prayer for Unity, A Prayer for Humanity, I Love You, Lord, A Prayer for the Gift of Wisdom and Love, A Prayer for the Disciples of Christ

Tenebrae : Rachmaninoff Vespers - All Night Vigil

Review: The roots of the Russian Orthodox Church are traceable back into the Third Century A.D. Whilst Western forms of Christianity continued to evolve, the Orthodox tradition has been preserved largely intact since the 11th Century, despite persecution of the Church under an intolerant Communist regime in Russia. The music of the Russian Orthodox Church features vocal chants, the oldest of which is known as znamenny (from the Slavonic znamia meaning "sign"). The melody of this chant is extremely simple, and whilst other composers added their characteristic harmonic effects, Rachmaninoff consciously preserved the modal purity of the original in his setting of the Vespers. The all-night vigil is celebrated on the eve of the main feasts of the Orthodox Church. Originally it lasted all night and consisted of three separate services to celebrate the beauty of the setting sun, and to reflect on the spiritual light of Christ as the new light of the coming day and the eternal light of heaven. Rachmaninoff's setting of the vigil was written in 1915, in the middle of the First World War. He has used authentic znamenny chant in seven movements, with two movements employing Greek chants. "Even in my dreams I could not have imagined that I would write such a work" Rachmaninoff told the singers at the first performance in March 1915. The work is dedicated to the scholar Stephan Vasilevitch Smolensky who introduced Rachmaninoff to the repertoire of the church, however the composer's inspiration was as much politically motivated as spiritually - the composition was a powerful affirmation of nationalism during the war.

Songlist: Come, Let us Worship, Bless the Lord, O My Soul, Blessed Is The Man, Gladsome Light, Lord, Now Lettest Thou, Rejoice O Virgin, The Six Psalms, Praise the Name of the lord, Blessed Art Thou O Lord, Having Beheld the Resurrection of Christ, My Soul, Magnifies the Lord, The Great Doxology, Today Salvation has Come, Tho Didst Rise From the Town, To Thee, the Victorious leader, We Praise Thee

Tenebrae : Requiem Mass 1605

Review: Tomas Luis de Victoria s requiem mass for six voices, written in 1603 and published in 1605, is a masterpiece. It is one of a handful of large-scale works which enjoys mainstream appeal in the 21st century. For many, it represents what Renaaissance polyphony is, what it sounds and feels like, and how expressive it can be. The disc also features two well-known works by Victoria s contemporary Alonso Lobo. The performance comes from the renowned professional chamber choir Tenebra, led by Nigel Short, following their recent BBC Music Magazine nominated recording of Francis Poulen s Figure Humaine.

Songlist: Lesson: Taedet anima mea, Introit: Requiem aeternam , Kyrie, Gradual: Requiem aeternam, Offertory: Domine, Jesu Christe, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei, Communion: Lux aeterna, Motet: Versa est in luctum, Responsory: Libera me, Domine, Lamentations Ieremiae Prophetae

Tenebrae : Songs of Farewell

Review: Following a string of five-star reviews for their previous discs of 20th-century French choral music the professional chamber-choir Tenebrae go from strength to strength with this new recording of British partsongs and choral music - centered on Hubert Parry's Songs of Farewell. Composed towards the end of Parry's life, the Songs of Farewell have taken on something of an epithetical interpretation; they are almost a musical summation of his compositional life, reflecting Parry's love of English renaissance madrigals and partsongs as much as the influence on his work from German composers like Brahms - made more complicated as these works were composed as the country (and its music) fell out of favour at the start of the Great War. This disc also includes works by Tavener, Sullivan and Vaughn Williams.

Songlist: The Evening-Watch Op.43 No.1, A Good-Night, Take him, earth, for cherishing, Funeral Ikos, Songs of Farewell, My soul, there is a country, I know my soul hath power to know all things, Never weather-beaten sail, There is an old belief, At the round earth's imagined corners, Lord, let me know mine end, They are at rest, The Turtle Dove, The long day closes, Rest, Bring us, O Lord God

The Choral Project : One is the All

Review: Founded by Daniel Hughes in 1996, the 46-strong, mixed-voice Choral Project has gained an excellent reputation for performing high-level choral literature in concerts, interfaith services and choral festivals and invitationals in Northern California and across the country. This is the San Jose, CA-based ensemble's 5th CD, including the critically acclaimed "Water and Light," featuring the music of Eric Whitacre. 17 songs, beginning with Stephen Swartz' soaring "Keramos" and the Ward Swingle-arranged "De Puta y Taco," "One is the All" impressively progresses through a varied and eclectic songlist. Roberto Valera's joyous "Quisiera," the brooding, dissonant "War Song," the lovely "So we'll go no more a roving," Charles Stanford's soaring "The Bluebird," Harry Belafonte's dynamic "Turn the World Around," Joan Szymcko's "It Takes A Village," Jaako Mantyjarvi's spirited "El Hambo," and Joshua Shank's dramatic "Musica animam tangens" are favorites. The poise and vocal maturity of the ensemble, a beautifully arranged and selected songlist and strong direction by Hughes add up to another very special CD from the Choral Project!

Songlist: Keramos , De Punta y Taco , Dieu! Qu'il La Fait Bon Regarder! , Quisiera , War Song , So We'll Go No More A-roving , Come To Me My Love, The Bluebird , Fair & True , Turn The World Around, It Takes A Village , The Garten Mother's Lullaby , El Hambo , Famine Song , Let Evening Come , Musica Animam Tangens , Ubi Caritas

The Chrysostomos Chamber Choir : Panihida

Review: This recording will be enjoyed by listeners who are interested in new Orthodox music being composed around the world. Young Finnish composer Mikko Sidoroff's (b. 1985) setting of the Orthodox Memorial Service (Panikhida) is beautifully sung by the Chrysostomos Chamber Choir, conducted by the composer. As for the work itself, similar to Pavel Chesnokov's Panihida, opus 39, it seems to be more appropriate for a concert performance than a church service, although portions of it can certainly be sung in a liturgical context. More importantly, it captures a recognizably "Orthodox" musical spirit, which it seeks to express through new and original musical means. The booklet provides information in English and in Finnish about the service, the composer, and the performers, as well as the text translation.

Songlist: O Come, let us worship, Psalm 91, Great Litany, Troparia, Blessed art Thou, O Lord, Kathisma, Refrain of the Canon, Third Canticle of the Canon, Kathisma and Theotokion, Sixth Canticle of the Canon, Kontakion, Ikos, Refrain of the Canon and 9th Ode, Troparia after the Litany, Closing Prayers and Blessing, Eternal memory

The Musica Choir recorded Kostiainen's suites for a mixed choir, partially based on Ingrian folklore lyrics (The Bridegroom's Arrival Songs 1- II and Mary's Story), some texts for the works are selected from the national epic Kalevala (The Tracing of Frost). Theatre of Voices : Arvo Part - A Tribute

Review: In celebration of composer Arvo Part's 70th birthday on September 11th, Harmonia Mundi offers this special selection of recordings, conducted by his long-time collaborator and biographer Paul Hillier. Of special note is the first release of Hillier's reading of Dopo la vittoria. Previously released recordings are taken from Hillier's two highly acclaimed recordings of the music of Arvo Part. His first CD, De Profundis, has remained a bestseller since its debut in March 1997. I Am The True Vine, his second Part disc, illustrated Hillier's unique affinity for the deep spiritual mysteries of Part's music, and his ability to illuminate them in ways no other performer can match. The collaborative relationship between Hillier and Estonian composer Part dates back to the early 1980s, when as director of the Hilliard Ensemble, he was among the first to present Part's music to the West.

Songlist: Dopo La Vittoria, The Woman With The Alabaster Box, Berliner Messe, Kyrie, Gloria, First Alleluia Verse, Second Alleluia Verse, Veni Sancte Spiritus, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei , Solfeggio, Magnificat, Bogoroditese Djevo, I Am The True Wine, Which Was The Son Of...

Theatre of Voices : Part - I Am The True Vine

Review: Contemporary troubador Paul Hillier has been one of the key players behind introducing Arvo Part's music to Western audiences, first through recordings with the Hilliard Ensemble and later through his magnificently innovative group Theatre of Voices. I Am the True Vine continues the collaboration by bringing together some truly vintage Part compositions from the '90s. Although it exists on disc in a more elaborate version for choir and strings, the 1990 Berlin Mass was originally written for just four solo voices and organ. Part later revised the score, returning to that original sonority, which is the version offered here. The consummate preparation of the Theatre of Voices, in which every line is lovingly unfurled, the whole building into a memorable aural sculpture, only heightens a listener's admiration for Part's ability to make the seemingly simple profound. We also hear the composer in a more overtly joyful mood than usual in the short first selection, while the title track--a setting of a text from the Gospel of John and one of three world premiere recordings here--is a marvelously organic example of word painting (representing Part's choral virtuosity even when it comes to setting English text).

Songlist: Bogoroditse dyevo (Hail Mary), I Am the True Vine, Kanon Pokajanen, The Woman with the Alabaster Box, Tribute to Caesar, Berliner Messe

Tudor Choir : Gentle Words: Shaker Songs

Review: The Seattle-based Tudor Choir is a professional mixed-voice choir with a flexible membership between 10 and 30 singers, founded by director Doug Fullington in 1993. They specialize in Renaissance polyphony and also sings Baroque, early American and 20th century music. "Gentle Words" is their 3rd CD. The Shakers (or United Society of Believers) originated in England in 1747. In 1770 the charismatic Ann Lee became the acknowledged leader, she and 8 others departed for America in 1774 to escape persecution. Their animated and ecstatic worship practices gave rise to their common name. The societies they formed are characterized by pacifism, gender/racial equality and an astounding industriousness and invention. These songs are part of a body of 10,000 Shaker songs. There are 28 a cappella tunes here, all following the Shaker aesthetics of beauty, simplicity and utility. "I will bow and be simple," "In Yonder Valley," "All is summer," "Love is little," "The burning day," the triumphant "Circular march," "Heavenly display," the foot-stomping "Followers of the Lamb," the joyous "Angels of heaven," "Dismission of Great I," "Gentle words," "Beautiful Valley," "Jubilee," "Cords of love" ... There is a quiet beauty and power to these songs--no wonder the Shakers have outlived all other utopian religious groups. Spirited, spiritual music sung beautifully!

Songlist: I will bow and be simple, In yonder valley, All is summer, O Lord make me pure, Love is little, The burning day, Circular march, Help me, O Lord, Heavenly display, Followers of the lamb, Come to Zion, We must be meek, Lay me low, Solemn song, Beautiful treasure, Peace, Angels of heaven, Hunger and thirst, Dismission of Great I, Revelation, Prayer for the captive, Gentle words, Beautiful valley, Jubilee, Exekiel's vision, Almighty Savior , Cords of love, I will go on my way

Tudor Choir : Requiem & Motets - Jacob Clemens non Papa

Review: The Tudor Choir adds to its critically acclaimed collection of recordings with this new CD of music by Renaissance composer Jacob Clemens non Papa (c.1515-c.1555). Clemens composed in all of the expected genres of his time. Much of his music is infused with a personal quality that differs from the generally abstract nature of much Renaissance sacred music. The music on this disc is a survey of his Latin-texted sacred polyphony, including his intimate Requiem, plus a Magnificat setting and a sampling of motets. The pieces chosen for this recording reveal texts that portray such themes as relationships, family, and remembrance and therefore demonstrate the unusual personal quality to be found in Clemens s works.

Songlist: Ecce quam bonum, Deus qui nos patrem et matrem, Requiem, Requiem aeternam, Kyrie, Absolve Domine, Offertory, Domine Jesu Christe, Sanctus and Benedictus, Agnus Dei , Communion: Lux aeterna, Continuo lacrimas, Magnificat quarti toni, Ego me diligentes diligo, Misit me pater vivens, Pater peccavi, Cum esset

The Tudor Choir's lovely shaping of phrases, impeccable intonation and unadorned, clean sound allow the words and music to become the Shaker "prayer language," to free the mind from the world, to visit the soul.

Tuskegee Institute Choir - William Dawson : Spirituals

Review: The Tuskegee (Alabama) Institute Choir, whose first singers were organized by school founder Booker T. Washington, is steeped in more than a century of pride and the richest of choral traditions. Booker insisted on the singing of African American spirituals by everyone at the weekly chapel worship services, a tradition that continues today. The Choir's most renowned director, composer and education William L. Dawson led the Choir into a new era in 1932, with their appearance at the opening of Radio City Music Hall in NYC, which would lead to performances before Presidents, radio and television audiences and worldwide prestige. There are 15 spirituals here, with innovative arrangements, powerful harmonies and solos; all sung with deep feeling and spirit. Simply the best versions we've heard of classic standards "Ezekiel Saw De Wheel," "Deep River," "There is a Balm in Gilead," "Ev'ry Time I Hear the Spirit," "Were You There," "Ain'a That Good News," "Mary Had A Baby" "King Jesus is A-Listening" and "Rockin' Jerusalem."
