Jeannine

Music by Duke Pearson, Lyrics by Oscar Brown Jr.

Duke Pearson had written this work for his playful 6-year old niece, but Brown's lyrics changed the song as he cast Jeannine as a sophisticated gold digger

Cuesta Voce : Timepieces : 00 1 CD

Cuesta Voce : Timepieces

Voce is San Luis Obispo, CA's Cuesta College's finest Vocal Jazz 9 mixed-voice ensemble, and "Timepieces" is recorded with a hot five-man student Jazz band. Formed in 1981, Voce has won an Outstanding Performance Award from DownBeat, first place at the 1998 Reno Jazz Festival and performances at Switzerland's prestigious Montreaux Jazz Festival. There are 10 cuts on this impressive second album (their first was 2007's excellent "Just One of Those Things"), some favorites among these sometimes accompanied pieces are Michel LeGrand's "I Will Wait for You," Anders Edenroth's a cappella "The Grass Grows Greener," the mellow "Something 'bout Believing," George & Ira Gershwin's classic "Summertime," Thad Jones' moody a cappella "Somna Mitt Barn," a sweet a cappella adaption of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and Imogen Heap's wonderfully harmonic a cappella "Hide and Seek." Voce has a beautiful sound, creative arrangements, and we loved "Timepieces!"

Songlist: I Will Wait For You, I've Got No Strings, The Grass Grows Greener, Something 'Bout Believing, Somna Mitt Barn, Jeannine, Summertime, Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy, Turn Your Love Around, Hide and Seek

The Manhattan Transfer : Bop Doo Wop : 00 1 CD : 81233

The Manhattan Transfer : Bop Doo Wop

Combining classic jazz (bop) and doo wop, the Transfer have recorded another impeccably constructed CD. Five of the tracks were recorded live in Tokyo-of course, the quality is spot-on per usual, the group representing the pinnacle of vocal art. Listen to the group go off on a scat improv on "Jeannine": the voices trade lines with each other in a perfectly executed quadruple play! "Route 66" won them yet another Grammy, for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and it sparkles. "Heart's Desire" is some of the best sounding doo wop we've ever heard; it's a humdinger! "That's The Way It Goes," which is dedicated to the Harptones and Criterions (Tim Hauser, bass singer of the Transfer, was a member of the Criterions as a young lad!) is all the sweeter now.

Songlist: Route 66, Jeannine, My Cat Fell In The Well, (Well! Well! Well!), The Duke Of Dubuque, How High The Moon, Baby Come Back To Me, (The Morse Code Of Love), Safronia B, Heart's Desire, That's The Way It Goes, Unchained Melody

Sixth Wave : It Will Come To You : 00 1 CD

Sixth Wave : It Will Come To You

The talented three men and three women from Los Angeles who call themselves Sixth Wave first got together in 1999 with the worthy goal of singing in the National Harmony Sweepstakes. To their surprise and our delight, they won the 2001 Finals, and they accomplished their second goal of recording their first excellent CD that same year. Appearing with the luminaries of the a cappella world, The Bobs, Rockapella, Swingle Singers, m-pact and The Perfect Gentlemen, they went to work on "It Will Come to You," their second CD, containing collaborations with Gabriel Mann, Joe Bob Finetti and Michelle Weir, as well as their first three original tunes, Gerald White's "You'll Always Remember the Song," Cindy Bourquin and Gerald's title tune, and a jazz tune by their friend Kent Carlson, "She's Been Around The Block." We have to say right off that "It Will Come" is the best jazz CD we have heard in a long time. From a stellar arrangement of Sting's "Fragile," a sweet cover of the manic jazz chestnut "Twisted," and absolutely nailing Aerosmith's rock anthem "Dream On," to incredibly arranged covers of "Strange Magic," Santana's "Oye Como Va" and a "William Tell Overture" cover that would make not only the Swingles but Rossini himself look over his shoulder, this CD is unbelievably good. The jazz classic "Jeannine," with vocal percussion by Joe Bob, totally soars, and an "Earth, Wind and Fire Medley" that incongruously includes Lennon/McCartney's "Got To Get You Into My Life," with the EWF disco hits "September," "After The Love Is Gone" and "Sing A Song," has to be heard to be believed. We loved Sixth Wave at the finals, and we love this CD!!

Songlist: It Will Come To You, Fragile, Twisted, Dream On, Oye Como Va, Strange Music, William Tell Overture, She's Been Around The Block, You Are There, Jeannine, Eart, Wind and Fire Medley, You'll Always Remember The Song
