Fools Rush In

Music by Rube Bloom, Lyrics by Johnny Mercer

The major hits at the time of introduction were Tony Martin, Glenn Miller with Ray Eberle and Tommy Dorsey with Frank Sinatra. It was also recorded by Billy Eckstine. The song proved popular with 1960s pop and rhythm and blues artists, resulting in charted remakes in 1960-61 (Brook Benton), 1962 (Etta James), and 1963 (Ricky Nelson). The Ricky Nelson version was an enormous hit, reaching #12 in the Billboard pop charts and would become the most famous version of this song, and was featured in Kenneth Anger's film Scorpio Rising (1963). For their 1962 album Duet Doris Day and André Previn recorded their interpretation of the song. Elvis Presley followed Ricky Nelson's style in 1971 featured on the 1972 album Elvis Now. Bow Wow Wow covered the track on their 1980 MC-only debut Your Cassette Pet. She & Him covered Ricky Nelson's version for Levi's Pioneer Sessions in 2010

The Four Freshmen : Day By Day : 00 1 CD : 604

The Four Freshmen : Day By Day

Recorded in 1962 as part of a Public Service series sponsored by the U.S. Navy for radio broadcast, this recording includes many the Four Freshmen standards-"Day By Day," "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring," "Route 66"-as well as some lesser known songs. Their trademark voicings made the group a popular favorite; they recorded over twenty albums for Capitol alone! Their likeable onstage persona can be heard on "Once In Love With Amy," a novelty number that sounds like singer Ross Barbour is on helium. "Somebody Loves Me" and "Taps Miller" are swung at a speed that is vivace going on dangerous-"Taps" features a challenging scat performance, while "Somebody Loves Me" has a rubato turn of phrase that is a clever device.

Songlist: Day By Day, Lulu's Back In Town, Polka Dots And Moonbeams, Teach Me Tonight, (It's Only A) Paper Moon, This October, Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring, Candy, Once In Love With Amy, Show Me The Way To Get Out Of This World, Fools Rush In, Somebody Loves Me, Taps Miller, Route 66, In This Whole Wide World

The Four Freshmen : In Concert : 00 1 CD : 613

The Four Freshmen : In Concert

The liner notes merely tell us that "In Concert" was recorded in the early sixties, probably at a number of live performances. The signature tight, bright harmonies are there, lightly accompanied by what sounds like an excellent jazz combo, but in fact are the 4F themselves, which always prompts the question: how can these guys sing so well and play instruments at the same time? There are 11 songs, mostly of the "torch song" variety: "You've Got Me Crying Again," "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows," "Love Lost," "There Will Never Be Another You," "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "How Can I Tell Her," "Angel Eyes," "Blues In The Night," "Fools Rush In," "Their Hearts Were Full Of Spring" and "In This Whole Wide World." The electricity of a live performance, while losing none of the excellent recording quality and tone-music to slow dance to!

Songlist: You've Got Me Crying Again, I'm Always Chasing Rainbows, Love Lostwomens, There Will Never Be Another You, Polka Dots and Moonbeams, How Can I Tell Her, Angel Eyes, Blues In the Night, Fools Rush In, Their Hearts Were Full of Spring, In This Whole Wide World

Hi-Lo's : Listen To The Hi-Lo's! : 00 1 CD : 67

Hi-Lo's : Listen To The Hi-Lo's!

Here's the recording that started the career of quite possibly the best vocal jazz arranger ever and certainly one of our favorites. In April 1953 24-year-old Gene Puerling and his friend Bob Strasen met Clark Burroughs and Bob Morse within a week of moving to Los Angeles and together formed the Hi-Lo's. Taking their name from the incredible vocal range they covered between them it was also true that, while Puerling and Burroughs were five feet seven and five feet five respectively, Morse and Strasen topped six feet. Recorded for Starlite Records and released in 1954 "Listen to The Hi-Lo's" received rich praise from the critics and led to a series of titles on Starlight which included collaborations with Frank Comstock. Gene Puerling's genius in arranging complex yet pleasing vocal arrangements is apparent from the very first track on this historic recording which is here released for the first time on CD. This import has the original liner notes and the earliest photographs we have seen of the group and shows how young they were when they first found success. This is a collector's title that will gather no dust on your shelf, as you will be listening to it time and time again. Fabulous!

Velvet Angels : I'm In Love : 00 1 CD : 7067

Velvet Angels : I'm In Love

Another example of a young group whose brief public exposure was over almost before it began, the Velvet Angels' career began in '62 or '63 and was history by '65. These recordings, some done at the Madison Hotel and the rest while the group practiced in a basement, reveal a gospel/R & B/doo-wop blend. For example, 'Jungle Fever,' an original written by Velvet Angel Robert Calhoun (he wrote many of the groups songs with Cy Iverson) is heavy on the gospel side of the scale, while 'Be Ever Wonderful''s lead is decidedly soul; 'Since You've Been Gone' is uptempo finger-snappin'doo-wop, with the lead singing high at the top of his range. It's a shame that this is the sum total of the group's professional output.

Songlist: I'm In Love, Blue Moon, Let Me Come Back, Johnny, Johnny , Be Ever Wonderful, For Sentimental Reasons, Jungle Fever, Since You've Been Gone, Your Love, Old MacDonald, Fools Rush In, Baby I Wanna Know, Mary, Johnny, Johnny, Let Me Come Back, Lola, I'm In Love, It's Too Soon To Know, When You're Smiling
