Influenced by the Bach Passions, the work crosses boundaries between opera and oratorio, with a series of choruses that run through the opera and range from powerful (Night Chorus) to ethereal (Ocean Chorus) to tender (Day Chorus). Papageno (altos), having lost Papagena (sopranos) in the evil Sarastro's castle, sits along in the garden and prepares to take his life to end his sorrows. Three spirits appear, urging him to once again play his magic bells and look around. Much to his surprise and joy, he sees his beloved Papagena. Joyfully united, the two sing of their eternal happiness, love and their many future children.

This beautiful duet from Monteverdi's opera L'Incoronazione di Poppea is a wonderful addition to the CME Opera Workshop series. This duet, which occurs at the end of the opera, beautifully illustrates Monteverdi's ability to interweave the vocal lines in a harmonically intriguing way. Ann Small's edition features an ornamented return of the first section of the duet with trills that contain repeated articulation of the same notes, a favored ornament in Monteverdi's works. Characteristic harmonies, clear choral phrasing, and appropriate vocal ranges make this Baroque masterwork easy to teach (and learn).

The Princess Pamina is saved by the Three Boys, spirit-like creatures who watch over the characters in the opera, protecting them from evil and guiding them toward enlightenment. For performance purposes, a chorus can be divided into three parts, each taking a line assigned to one of the Three Boys. Duration: ca. 6:10.
