Review: This musically diverse collection contains seven reproducible selections for Christmas, Hanukkah and December holidays, carefully arranged to be sung as unison or optionally as 2-part. A Wreath of Holiday Chorals works as a bridge to teaching harmony, giving less experienced choirs and younger singers quality literature with many performance options. As you rehearse, you will discover the many ways to incorporate the optional Part Two; perhaps by adding a simple harmony or selecting a section where both parts are sung instead of just unison. In addition to the physical book, it is also completely digital, granting you permission to print the entire book or singer-only PDF parts. Included are full performance and accompaniment MP3s as well as part-dominant recordings to help with individual learning, all downloadable for immediate use. Review: Vocal anthologies have been a staple in voice studios for many years, providing teachers and students with a wide array of repertoire at a reasonable cost. Teachers eagerly stocked their studios with these multi-composer volumes as well as those of the more popular single composers such as Schubert, Schumann, Debussy, Fauré, etc. There is a plethora of anthologies devoted to the Arie antiche, German lieder, French mélodie, and American art song. Missing from this landscape was an anthology with multiple composers devoted to the art songs of Black composers. Acknowledging that there have always been some anthologies by Black composers devoted to single composers of art songs, song cycles, and spirituals; there have been relatively few collections that offer singers a variety of songs by different Black composers. This new collection Black Composers in Art Song is designed with the studio teacher in mind. Its appealing repertoire meets technical, linguistic, and interpretive goals to make it easier for teachers to expand the musical canon they teach to include works by Black composers. The composers selected represent the United States, England and France and both male (9) and female (5) composers. The fourteen selected songs span the 18th to 21st centuries and utilize three of the singing languages (English, German, French and French creole). The book includes a thorough introduction along with composer bios. Songs include: The Butterfly upon the Sky (Jeremiah Evans) - Dans Un Bois Solitaire (Joseph Bologne) - Dream Variations (Richard Thompson) - Fais Do Do (Camille Nickerson) - Grief (William Grant Still) - Herz, Mein Herz, Sei Nicht Beklommen (Marques Garrett) - Hold Fast to Dreams (Forence Price) - Homesick Blues (Leslie Adams) - I Want to Die While You Love Me (Undine Smith Moore) - In the Springtime (Betty Jackson King) - Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal (Harry T. Burleigh) - Since You Went Away (J. Rosamond Johnson) - Thou Art the Soul of a Summer's Day (Adolphus Hailstork) - What Lips My Lips Have Kissed (Margaret Bonds) - The Willow Song (Samuel Coleridge-Taylor).
Chapters: The Butterfly Upon The Sky, Dans Un Bois Solitaire, Dream Variations, Fais Do Do, Grief, Herz, Mein Herz, Sei Nicht Beklommen, Hold Fast To Dreams, Homesick Blues, I Want To Die While You Love Me, In The Springtime, Now Sleeps The Crimson Petal, Since You Went Away, Thou Art The Soul Of A Summer's Day, What Lips My Lips Have Kissed, The Willow Song

Review: This CD is designed for young elementary school aged singers to learn how to warm up their voice in a healthy fun way. The volume begins with advice on healthy singing, including words on posture, breathing, and diction. Vocal warm ups follow in patterns broken up into three separate vocalizes: Singing numbers, Singing syllables and Singing solfege. Musical terms such as major scales, chords, octaves, staccato and legato are sung through and explained. The goal of Voice Lessons To Go for Kids is to develop good healthy confident voices as well as to develop children's theoretical knowledge about music, creating good singers on the road to being young musicians.
Chapters: Never Push, You will improve, Your Vocal Assessment, Posture, Diction, Breathing, Confidence, Vocal Warm-Ups
Review: The aim of these Vocalises is to render the voice sufficiently flexible and mellow to execute easily and elegantly the coloratura and embellishments found in the works of our great composers. Proceeding from the principle, that it is unpractical to practice a variety of difficult passages at the same time, I begin with two, three, and four tones, then advancing progressively to more difficult exercises; leaving it to the teacher to transpose them a semitone higher or lower. However, in order to avoid the monotony and lassitude which are almost inseparable from a strictly methodic in a musical and agreeable form; and have made them very short, to prevent overexertion of the voice. Following its avowed purpose, this work contains no exercises for sustained tones; and it will suffice to sing daily a few long-sustained tones, before taking up these exercises. The results obtained with this method, and its approbation by several of the highest musical authorities, justify my hope, that it will find a favorable reception.

Review: The Sieber Vocalises: It is important to know why Sieber is so good for the voice. He was a Viennese, Italian-trained voice teacher who knew the importance of vowel alteration and its role in keeping the balance of the registers. The Sieber Vocalises are designed to balance the registers using 8 measure melodies based on the Italian syllables da, me, ni, po, to, la, be. The register balance is achieved in the ingenious way Sieber arranges the syllables. Again, his goal it to allow the space of the open vowels in the closed vowels, and the ring of the closed vowels in the open vowels. Lindquest called these vocalises the 'bridge between vocalizing and singing music'. In my 25 years of teaching, I have never found a singer that the Sieber Vocalises did not help tremendously. 36 Eight-Measure Vocalises for Elementary Teaching for baritone voice.

Review: This text-book was received with such marked favor by the foremost musicians and singing teachers of the day, and attained such popularity, that this new and thoroughly revised edition has become a standard. This method can also be used with the careful guidance of an experienced teacher. The preface contains a series of important theoretical and practical suggestions which have in all cases proved to be an admirable basis of instruction in singing, and are recognized as such by the most eminent authorities, like Lamperti, Garcia, Panseron, and Sieber, to whose opinions the author had also occasionally referred to for vocal instruction. A classic!

Review: Giovanni Battista Lamperti was a highly-regarded Italian singing teacher who was considered to one of the best of his era. Many of Giovanni's students became international opera stars. These vocalises are designed to prepare the soprano voice for performance. "I recommend the daily use of these Exercises, particularly to Soprano and Mezzo-soprano singing a melodramatic repertory; because exercises of this kind promote length of respiration, and delay the deterioration and undue vibration (tremolo) of the voice. Beginners should confine themselves to a regularly limited range, so as not to weaken the medium of the voice and should extend their compass according to individual progress and development." - G.B. Lamperti

"I recommend the daily use of these Exercises, particularly to Alto singing a melodramatic repertory; because exercises of this kind promote length of respiration, and delay the deterioration and undue vibration (tremolo) of the voice. Beginners should confine themselves to a regularly limited range, so as not to weaken the medium of the voice and should extend their compass according to individual progress and development." - G.B. Lamperti

Review: Giuseppe Concone, the famous Italian Master of Singing and Pianoforte, was born in Turin in the year 1810. His musical education was had in Turin, where he continued to live until he met with discouragement on the failure of his first opera, 'Un episodio di San Michel,' which was performed in 1836. In 1837 he moved to Paris, where he became famous as a teacher of the piano forte, singing, the theory of music and composition. While resident in Paris, Concone became very popular as a composer of Romanzas, Arias and Duettini; but his chief title to fame rests on a Series of Solfeggi which have a world-wide reputation and are everywhere in use - they are eminently practical and melodious, with a flowing accompaniment. Here is a collection of excellent exercises for sopranos.

Review: The sterling value and great usefulness of Concone's lessons have been so long recognized, that their extensive adoption caused the issue of numerous editions in almost every country where the study of the Art of Singing is cultivated. No edition, however, is as thorough and complete as his 'Fifty Lessons' series. The purpose of these lessons, in the author's own words, are 'to place and fix the voice accurately,' and 'to develop taste while singing broad, elegant and rhythmical melodies.' This is a vocal training series not to be missed!
