Joan Frey Boytim : The First Book of Tenor Solos Part II

Review: There has been widespread accceptance by teachers and students of 'The First Book Series,' so it was only natural that there would be a 'Part II' book compiled. The Part II books follow many of the same concepts which are covered in the Preface of the original volumes, including a comprehensive selection of between 34 and 37 songs from the Baroque through the 20th Century. The selections range from easy to moderate difficulty for both singer and accompanist. At the request of the students and teachers, there are more sacred songs, and two Christmas solos have been added to each book. Also included are two enhanced CDs, giving you the ability to not only play the accompaniments on both your CD player and computer, but they are also CD-ROMs that are capable of playing the tracks at different tempos and in different keys when played on the computer.

Songlist: Farewell , To The Beloved, Ave Maria , The Birthday Of The King , Good-Morning Sue , The Cloths Of Heaven, Tender Ties , Down By The Sally Gardens , Du Bist Wie Eine Blume , Everyday Is Ladies Day With Me , Fame's An Echo , Forget Me Not , The Fishermaiden , In A Foreign Land , Incline Thine Ear , It Was A Lover And His Lass , A Kingdom By The Sea , Linden Lea , Love Quickly Is Pall'd , My Lovely Celia , Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen , O Come O Come My Dearest, O Del Mio Amato Ben , On Richmond Hil There Lives A Lass , Panis Angelicus , Phillis Has Such Charming Graces, Russian Picnic , Sea Fever , Sonntag, Hark! Joan Frey Boytim : The Second Book of Mezzo-Soprano Solos Part II

Review: More great classical material for progressing vocal students, from the leading American expert in teaching the young voice. The series started with The First Book of Solos, and then, at the same difficulty level, came The First Book of Solos - Part II. The Second Book of Solos, originally released in 1993, is for singers who have taken voice a little longer and are capable of more challenges, but is still decidedly student-level material, and music that can be sung by good high school students. The new The Second Book of Solos - Part II set is at exactly the same level as The Second Book of Solos. It shares the same features: a deliberate variety of music in different styles and languages, including a few sacred selections, with over 30 songs per book. Available as books only, or in packs with two CDs of piano accompaniments recorded by Laura Ward.

Included are some easy English folk songs, however most of the pieces are robust and rhythmical settings of male texts. The level of difficulty is easy to medium. Most of the tempos are moderately fast. The ranges are very accessible with a top F for the tenors and only a few high E-flats for the baritone / basses. 21 songs in English for progressing singers

Joan Frey Boytim (editor) : Sacred Solos for All Ages - High Voice

Review: Joan Boytim, who compiled the widely-used series The First Book of Solos, is the most respected name in publications for the developing singer. She brings her expertise and vast knowledge of vocal literature into the sacred genre with these collections, which present traditional sacred solos for classical voice and piano. Ranging from classics by Bach and Mozart to early 20th century favorites and rarities, the 43 songs - some long out of print - span from easy to more challenging, but all are within the realm of a reasonable, classical solo for a church service.

Johannes Brahms : 15 Selected Songs

Review: with CDs of diction lessons and piano accompaniments; includes historical notes, translations and International Phonetic Alphabet With diction lessons recorded by Irene Spiegelman, German diction coach at the Metropolitan Opera, and piano accompaniments recorded by Laura Ward, this collection of the most often taught Brahms songs is an excellent introduction to lieder. The diction for each song is recorded twice: first recited as an actor would speak it, showing flow of the language and mood, followed by a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. This experienced language coach adapts the R in German in the slow versions as recommended for classical singers. She is also very sensitive to liaisons between word sounds in the musical settings.

Songlist: Botschaft, Dein blaues Auge, Die Mainacht, Feldeinsamkeit, Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer, Meine Liebe ist , Mondnacht, O liebliche Wangen, Sapphische Ode, Sonntag, Vergebliches, Von ewiger Liebe, Wie Melodien zieht es mir

John Glenn Paton : Gateway to German Diction

Review: Initiating a new series of coordinated diction manuals and anthologies, this book helps students to move beyond diction to clear understanding and authentic style. Thomas Hampson says, "This guide not only achieves an excellent study of the tools for proper translation and diction, it goes much deeper and more importantly to the teaching of musical and poetic expression from the inner side of the language." Every German example word or phrase is translated into English and is also spoken perfectly on the included CD by trained actress Dr. Nora Henry, from Hanover, Germany.

John Glenn Paton : Gateway to German Lieder - High Voice

Review: Great masters of lieder from Beethoven to Richard Strauss are represented among 48 songs that have been chosen for their appeal to young singers. Musical excerpts studied in Gateway to German Diction appear as complete scores. The 48 lieder contained here are only a sampling of the wonderful world of German art songs. We hope that this book is a Gateway to German Liederin the sense of giving access to a realm of imagination and expression created by some of the greatest composers ever known. This book brings together various kinds of information that would other wise require research in various books. The commentary pages that precede the songs will help the singer especially with the preparatory steps that should precede actual singing: translating the text, analyzing its meaning, reciting it with correct and expressive diction, and researching the relevant historical background. The goal is artistic communication with an audience, based on the singer's clear understanding of the message and meaning of the song. German tempo and style markings are translated on the pages where they are used. Tempos in Romantic style are never absolute and never metro- nomic, but metronome markings are provided as a starting point.

John Kember : Sight Singing 1

Review: The aim of this first sight-singing volume is to instill confidence in singers and to present a method of approaching all aspects of singing at sight. Many of the melodies follow familiar shapes and rhythms, and use sequences to aid recognition of these patterns. Singers are encouraged to observe how to obtain their starting note from the introduction and to note the help with their vocal line that can be found in the accompaniment.

Songlist: Preface, Rhythms for sight singing, Melodies for sight singing
