Contemporary Christian A Cappella Recordings

Expressing Christian faith in music is an idea that goes back millennia, but contemporary Christian music is one of those art forms that is, if not uniquely American, certainly recognizably so. For nearly a century, singers have been performing and recording celebratory expressions of their faith in a modern fashion, usually in English, frequently in popular musical styles. Contemporary Christian music brings religious music to the general public in a totally new way, and makes it just plain fun. If you don’t believe us, take a listen to some of these terrific groups!

Discovery Singers : Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Review: Singing as part of Grand Rapids, Michigan's Discovery House ministry and radio programs for over 40 years, this veteran 10-strong, mixed-voice a cappella ensemble brings us this wonderful collection. Inspired by the story "A Blossom in the Desert, Reflections of Faith in the Art and Writings of Lilias Trotter." These are simply an even dozen of some of the most inspirational, most beloved Christian hymns we know of: "All Hail the Power," "Be Still My Soul," "Come, Thou Fount," "I Am His and He Is Mine," "I Sing The Mighty Power of God," "Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us," "I Surrender All," "The Lord's My Shepherd," "My Jesus, I Love Thee," the title tune, "Nearer, Still Nearer" and "Doxology." Lovely, upbeat songs that move us and lift us up!

Durant : Ride

Review: There are quite a few "family dynasties" in the a cappella world, most notably in barbershop, but here we have a very auspicious beginning of perhaps another. Keith Lancaster has built a very solid reputation as director of the various groups under the Acappella Ministries banner and now three of his children Melissa Lancaster, Kim Lancaster and Anthony Lancaster along with three others have formed the mixed group Durant. The children grew up on the road and in the studio with their father and have individually produced and performed on an impressive amount of recordings. This collection of praise and inspirational songs clearly demonstrates that musical talent can be genetic and fans of contemporary Christian music are sure to find this recording a real treat.

Songlist: Oh How Great, When I'm Down, People Get Ready, The River Medley, His Righteousness, As the Deer, He Looked Beyond, Thank You, Without Love, Ride the Chariot, Bonus Track

Emmanuel Quartet : A New Day onsale

Review: For Phillip, Ryan, Tim and Joey, sweet-singing members of Deer Lodge, TN's Emmanuel Quartet, their ministry is simple-its all right there in 1 Chronicles: "Sing to the Lord, aall the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples." The 11-title songlist on "Feeling Good" speaks (or in fact sings) for itself: "Children's Medley, "Mighty is the Word," "If We Miss Heaven," "What More Could He Do?," "Give In To the Lord," "The Ballad of Elisha's Bones," "My Savior First of All," "Peaceful Side of Jordan," "A New Day," "We Shall Wear A Crown" and "Twenty Three." Ryan's rich deep bass, Tim's solid baritone, Phillip's fine tenor and Joey's soaring leads make each of these songs a joyous, inspirational winner. Don't miss "Feeling Good!"

Songlist: Children's Medley, Mighty is the Word, If We Miss Heaven, What More Could He Do?, Give In To The Lord, The Ballad of Elisha's Bones, My Savior First Of All, Peaceful Side of Jordan, A New Day, We Shall Wear a Crown, Twenty-Three

Firemen, the : The Firemen

Review: Arkansas' The Firemen are Rick Castlemen, Brian Fuller, Brian Lewis, James McDuffie and Matthew Schmitz, five young men singing powerfully about their faith. This is contemporary Christian music, with the emphasis on contemporary. Vocal percussion, tight harmonies, even a reggae dub on one of our favorite songs, 'Let Me See.' All original material, most written by group members and, like the Bible, focused on stories. From the opener 'Can I Come,' 'Can You See His Blood?,' 'Higher Perspective,' 'Pharoah,' 'Let Me Show You The Way' (another of our favorites), 'I Know A Man,' 'The Little Girl ' and 'Nothing But Love,' to the upbeat, driving 'Dive,' every song is a gem, reminiscent of Rockapella and the Blenders at their best. This is strong stuff, beautifully written and sung with spirit and conviction, and in our opinion, more likely to start fires (in listeners' hearts) than to put them out!

Songlist: Can I Come, Can You See His Blood?, Let Me See, Higher Perspective, Pharaoh, Let Me Show You (The Way), I Know a Man (His Name Is Jesus), The Little Girl, Nothing But Love, Dive

Gaither Vocal Band : Gaither A Cappella

Review: All-male quartet the Gaither Vocal Band, winners of 4 Grammys and many other awards, give us only pictures of themselves in the liner notes of "A Cappella," the fact that this is part of the "Gaither Gospel Series" and the lyrics to these beautiful, inspirational songs. Several of these 12 songs are originals, "I Then Shall Live" with words by Gloria Gaither, and "Center of My Joy" and "Gentle Shepherd" with words by Gloria and music by William Gaither. Other favorites are "Delivered From the Hands of Pharoah," "Low Down the Chariot," "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Jesus! What A Friend for Sinners," "He Will Carry You" and Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." Simple, powerful harmonies, heartfelt faith, beautiful words, arrangements and music-this is some of the best Contemporary Christian/Gospel we have heard! Companion Songbook.

Songlist: Low Down the Chariot, Leave It There / What A Friend We Have In Jesus, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Delivered from the Hands of Pharoah, He Will Carry You, Jesus! What A Friend for Sinners, Sing A Song / I'd Like To Teach the World to Sing, Center of My Joy, Heaven's Joy Awaits, God Bless America, I Then Shall Live, Gentle Shepherd

Glad : A Cappella Project III

Review: 'The Solid Rock' starts the recording and is as rich and lush an arrangement as we have heard from the wonderful singers of Glad. Monophonic phrases gradually give way to polyphonic complexity. The voices spread from one note to multi-part harmony. Then we are treated to a gospel/jazz arrangement of 'Tell It Like It Is.' Because the style was pioneered by Take Six that is our best description of what it sounds like. 'Your Love Broke Through' has a touch of percussion added to an arrangement that feels like a ballad. The percussion is marvelously inventive, and almost seems a shame that it's found on only one arrangement, but as a purist, this reviewer is just as glad. All in all, each of the ten songs are different musical views of the gospel field. They vary from the traditional song which builds to cascades of harmonies to jazz with R&B overtones. Once again we are blessed to have Glad in the a cappella field.

Songlist: The Solid Rock, Tell It Like It Is, Your Love Broke Through, Doer Of Your Word, Arise, My Soul, Arise, That's What The Lonely Is For, Stars In The Universe, My God I Love You, Crown Him With Many Crowns, We Gather Together

Glad : A Cappella Worship 2

Review: Following their success with 'Worship and Praise,' the Glad quartet have returned with ten more songs of inspiration in the contemporary Christian mode. As always, the production and arranging has a modern edge (several of the tracks feature rhythm samples), and, as on 'God Is My Redeemer,' invites comparisons to Take 6, with the multiple part stacked chords and vocal trills. The quieter ballads, such as 'Oh God, My God,' are elaborate pop, each melodic embellishment ascending ever higher; similarly, 'Maker Of My Heart' weaves its progression with surging intensity and upward motion. The intelligently crafted songs of Glad are always performed with compelling sincerity.

Songlist: God Is My Redeemer, How High And How Wide, Oh God, My God, Maker Of My Heart, Mourning Into Dancing, We Sing Your Mercies, Jesus, Lover Of My Soul, Great Is The Lord, Give Unto The Lord, How Deep The Father's Love For Us

Glad : A Cappella Worship and Praise

Review: Glad's jubilent style features sacred subject matter, supported by stiring arrangements that use multiple countermelodies and modulations to glorify the Creator. The result is positive and uplifting and this new collection of original songs is memorable. Layer upon layer of harmonies and jazzy chord extensions, on songs such as 'Gloria', 'Awesome God', 'He Loves to Hear Our Praise', 'I Come by the Blood' genuflect and express the heartfelt spirit of the season.

Songlist: May the Gory of the Lord, Gloria, Awesome God, Before the Throne of God Above, Shout to the Lord, He is Exalted, The Highest Glory, Alas! and did My Savior Bleed, He Loves to Hear our Praise, I Come by the Blood, More of You

Glad : Acappella Project I

Review: This is it! This is the 1988 album that saw a Christian rock group gain meteoric popularity in the a cappella field. Each of their prior albums had included one a cappella tune. It was an experiment to do an entire recording of them. Thank goodness! You might hear elements of Acappella, The Beach Boys, Yes and other virtuoso male vocal rock and popular rhythm groups but one aspect that distinctly differentiates Glad is the fact that they have classical elements in their music which gives them a wider palette of vocal textures and possibilities. You will always read reviewers use the terms rich and lush when describing the multi-layering of the Glad compositions. These terms are not exaggerated. If anything they are understated. Just listen to that vocal horn fanfare! Rich, lush, rich, lush, rich, lush. There!

Songlist: A Mighty Fortress, In The First Light, O For A Thousand Tongues, Depending On Your Love, Be Thou My Vision, Easter Song, Be Ye Glad, The Reason, Amen, And This Is Love, And Can It Be, God Is my Rock

Glad : Acappella Project II

Review: Rich and lush. Did we say that yet? Well let's just get it out of the way, shall we. After the wonderful reception of the first all a cappella album by Glad, a follow-up was demanded by fans everywhere. Not only will you hear the popular, rock, and classical elements in all their glory but a distinct jazz element joins the repertoire which is a portent of things to come (A Cappella Gershwin). Just listen to Ed Nalle and Rob Neal's song 'Sing It A Cappella' and you'll no doubt think of Take Six. Immediately following is the introduction to 'Christ The Lord Is Risen Today,' a wonderful classical/jazz hybrid. The whole recording is a marvelous mix of new material and arrangements of historical tradition, Charles Westley, Isac Watts, Matthew Bridges and even Theodulph of Orleans for real ancient history! Don't forget now, rich and lush!

Songlist: Crown Him With Many Crowns, When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, Sing It A Cappella, Christ The Lord Is Risen Today, You Put This Love In My Heart, Just As I Am, Sing A New Song, God So Loved The World, All Glory, Laud And Honor, Rejoice, The Lord Is King, My Jesus, I Love Thee

Glad : Hymns

Review: Lacking sufficient superlatives to merely rave, your trusty reviewer will try to give a feeling of the musical arrangements applied to some well known hymns, amidst a bevy of lesser-knowns. The beginning tune is more than just worthy of attention, it rivets one's attention. The hymn is Edward Shurtleff's 'Lead On, O King Eternal.' It was written in 1887 when his classmates of his seminary graduating class requested that he compose an inspirational call to spiritual battle. Glad embellishes the resulting hymn with an implication of vocal fanfare in the background, four part harmonies, the use of jazz chording and builds to such a crescendo that it is as inspiring as the composer would have ever wished. That is just the first song! Among the fourteen songs are found 'Rock of Ages,' 'Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee' and 'Fairest Lord Jesus.' They provide a rock of familiarity so that our spirits can soar into the lesser known and still be anchored. An additional little bonus are the notes which give brief histories of the songs. Great!

Songlist: Lead On, O King Eternal, Beneath The Cross Medley, This Is My Father's World/For The Beauty Of The Earth, Rock Of Ages, Blessed Assurance, All Beauty Speaks Of Thee, I Sing The Mighty Power of God, Thy Word Medley, Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, Fairest Lord Jesus, Immortal Invisible, Breathe On Me, Breath Of God, Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, The Master Has Come/O Worship

Glad : Receive The Glory - A Cappella Project 4

Review: One of Contemporary Christian music's most enduring vocal bands, with a 30 year history of recording and concert ministry, all-male quartet Glad gives us the Christmas gift of "Receive the Glory" (A Cappella Project IV), their first a cappella album in 5 years. These ten songs have Glad's trademark impeccable arrangements, layered harmonies and vocal versatility, beginning with the finely-crafted "A Debtor to Mercy Alone," and continuing through covers like "All Hail The Power of Jesus' Name," "O Wondrous Love," "Blessed Be Your Name," "O Sacred Head Now Wounded," "Holy, Holy, Holy," and "Be Still My Soul"-but the arrangements are so fine, it is as if we are hearing these songs for the first time. The title tune and "In Christ Alone" are lovely and inspirational. Since their formation at West Chester State U in the early 70's, Glad has touched millions of people with their musical ministry while creating a wonderful body of work, 11 CDs appreciated by a cappella lovers of all genres. All we can say is, we're glad you're back in the recording studio again, and don't wait again so long!

Go Fish : Infectious

Review: The three talented men of Tennessee-based Go Fish, whose finely-crafted original songs have graced 6 previous CDs and 1 DVD, which are some of our favorite, and best-selling Contemporary Christian recordings. When two of the men became fathers, they turned their songwriting and live-performance talents towards children, and they have created a remarkably popular body of work, selling over 500,000 CDs and DVDs. For a cappella purists, that a few CDs ago Go Fish went (rock-band) accompanied, and they have continued that trend. That said, we're once again amazed by the energy, joy and creativity of "Infectious," which is defined on the back of the liner notes as "something that is easily and readily communicated," and that "few things are more infectious than a godly lifestyle." 10 songs, plus bonus track ("Silent Night," from "More Than a Story." Favorites are "I See You," "Until The Stars Fall," "That's What Amazes Me," the title tune, "Watch Me Go," "Clover Leaf Park," "You're My Little Girl," "You Remind Me" and "Lord I Give You Me." There's a lot of love and feeling in "Infectious," the product of the consistent, beautiful and creative ministry of these talented young men!

Go Fish : Kickin' It Old School

Review: Jamie, Andy and Jason, "The Go Fish Guys" have the mission to create "Great Music for Kids That Won't Drive Parents Bonkers," and they have six excellent Contemporary Christian albums and two wonderful live DVDs in the Primarily A Cappella catalog at Singers.com. The Guys use synthesizers, sampling and hip electronic effects and cutting edge arrangements to reinvent and teach classic hymns to a whole new generation of children, songs such as "Sweet Song Of Salvation/I Love to Tell the Story," "This Is My Father's World," "Blessed Assurance," "I'll Fly Away," and "The Old Rugged Cross." There are also new tunes with the same themes, the title tune, "I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord," "Before the Throne of God Above," the Blues/Rock "Shelter in A Time of Storm" and "The Solid Rock" featuring Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. Often accompanied, these three guys have once again created an album full, rich, joyous, inspirational sound that children and adults will surely love!

Songlist: Kickin' It Old School, Sweet Song of Salvation/ I Love To Tell The Story, I'm A Soldier In The Army Of The Lord, This Is My Father's World, Blessed Assurance, Before The Throne Of God Above, I'll Fly Away, Shelter In A Time Of Storm, The Solid Rock, The Old Rugged Cross

Go Fish : Snazzy

Review: Through six excellent previous CDs, Franklin, TN's dynamic all male trio Go Fish has long become one of our favorite Contemporary Christian groups. "Snazzy," their 7th, continues a trend that began with "Splash" when the "Go Fish Guys" became parents and directed their considerable musical writing, arranging and performance talents to turning on kids to Jesus. "Superstar," "Snooze," and the Showtime DVD, all excellent, followed, and "Snazzy" is every bit as powerful and innovative-we have to report, however, that the whole album is heavily percussioned and accompanied. That said, you and your kids will love these 13 songs, which "rock out," and do it well, more than any Contemporary Christian recording that we've ever heard. The title tune, "Stories," "Superhero," "Bible Book Bop," "Gotta Move," "Saved" and "Love Like This" all have an upbeat, hip Christian message that boogies down. "American Kid" is a patriotic anthem for kids that might have been written and performed by Aerosmith. The funky "Itsy Bitsy Spider" is one of the best arrangements on the album, "The Mom Song" is a hip love letter that everyone can relate to, and the refrain of "Jammies," "Get your jammies on--wash your face, brush your teeth, say your prayers, then go to sleep" is more good advice, that rocks, from Go Fish.

Songlist: Snazzy, Stories, Superhero, Bible Book Bop, Gotta Move, Just Rock (Intro), American Kid, Saved, Love Like This, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Hit The Drum, The Mom Song, Jammies

Go Fish : Snooze

Review: Since they have all married and some have become fathers, the members of one of our favorite Contemporary Christian groups, all-male a cappella trio Go Fish, have released some excellent material directed at their own and other children. "Splash," "Superstar" and the new DVD, "Showtime" are all winners, and "Snooze" is no exception. We were especially impressed with originals by group member Jamie Statema, who wrote the sweet title tune, "Little Buckaroo," "You Are Mine," "You're My Little Girl" and "Awake." We also liked the traditional "SkinnaMarinkyDinkyDink" and a pair of originals by Billy Sprague, "Sail Away" and "Welcome to the World." You can see the love here in the faces of the 3 dads, feel it in their voices as they sing these touching songs, and hear it in the lyrics. "You Are Mine" is a powerful lullabye, letting a child know that they are unconditionally loved and protected as they go to sleep-a big improvement on the fairly scary concept of "If I should die before I wake." Great stuff especially for parents and children from Go Fish!

Songlist: Snooze, Catch A Falling Star, The All Day Song, SkinnMarinkyDinkyDink, Little Buckaroo, You're My Little Girl, You Are Mine, Awake, Sail Away, Welcome To The World

Review: In their mission to share the word of God with the world through their music, Contemporary Christian , Minnesota-based 3-man group Go Fish have brought us 3 excellent a cappella CDs, "More Than A Story," "Out of Breath" and "Part of the Proof. Some non-vocal percussion, synthesizer, etc. are there, but the message, the voices and the infectious original words and melodies are what stands out. 10 songs: "I've Got the Joy" makes you want to get up and boogie, "The B-I-B-L-E," "Alleluia," the rocking, joyful chorus ("Oh me, oh my") of "Big, Bad Billy," the sweet, inspirational "You Are Mine," "Planes, Phones and Microwaves," the wonderfully arranged "This Little Light of Mine," "Ladybug," "My Very Own Church" and the powerful "I'll Do My Best." Haven Quartet : A Cappella bestseller

Review: Falling from the heights of success as a radio personality, director of two Southern California radio stations and family man, to the drunken depths of despair and rootless dereliction, left Paul Meyers at the bottom. In agonized desperation he asked Jesus Christ for help and that moment in the early 1930s was the beginning of the Haven Of Rest Ministries. With his radio experience Paul created a radio program with a quartet, speaker, pipe organ, vibra harp and some poetry. The Haven Quartet are the descendants of this inspirational beginning. On this recording from 1991, you will hear the variety of harmonies usually associated with the four-square gospel singing traditions but the beautifully balanced voices of the quartet are so well matched that this recording is pleasurably reminiscent of the lush harmonies of Glad. Companion songbook available.

Songlist: Sing Praise to God, All Creatures of our God and King, Blessed Be the Name, I Will Praise Him, Immortal, Invisible, A Mighty Fortress is our God, Near to the Heart, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, I Love You Lord, Yesterday, Today, Forever, A Shelter in the Time of Storm, Watch and Pray, When I Call, Rejoice Ye, Pure in Heart, Give Thanks, The Lord Will Come, Soon and Very Soon, In the Sweet By and By, The Light of the World

Haven Quartet : A Cappella Hymns

Review: Well its six years after the Haven Quartet's release, A cappella, and there have been some changes in the ministry. The biggest is the outreach on the internet. For our listening purpose the Quartet's music is richer and more wonderful than ever. The heritage keeps maturing! Now the singers are Walt Harrah (who is also producer), Bill Cantos, Jeff Gunn and Randy Crenshaw. For fans of other varieties of a cappella music we have to say, yes, he's that Randy Crenshaw, whose singing on Vocal Nation and Just 4 Kicks has left quite a mark on our community. Now if you didn't know better you might suspect that you are listening to Acappella or Glad for, as you'll find in the recordings of those two groups, the complexity of harmony, meshing of voices and sophisticated production yields a sound that is both inspirational and esthetically delightful.

Songlist: He Hideth My Soul, Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee, Day by Day, Like A River Glorious, No, Not One!, Talk About A Soul, Be Thou My Vision, Come Thou Fount, Let The Whole Creation Cry, The Old Rugged Cross, Our Bondage, It Shall End, Hallelujah! Haven Quartet : Awesome God

Review: The ministry of the prolific, beloved 4-man Hollywood-based Haven Quartet beautifully continues with the inspirational "Awesome God." Beginning with a powerful pair of original songs, Christian Bateman's "Come Christians Join to Sing," and Charles Gabriel's "My Savior's Love," with a nice solo by Randy Crenshaw. Another group of originals, Twila Paris' "You Have Been Good," Terry Talbot's "Create in Me," Steve Ragsdale's "Grateful Hearts," follows a nice arrangement of "Saviour, Like A Shepherd Lead Us." The powerful title tune segues into the original reggae song "No Business Doubting," and the original "Exalt His Name" by Walt Harrah" lead into the standards "What Wondrous Love Is This" and the folk hymn "Were You There." The final cut is another wonderful Harrah original, "In This Thing Together." All songs are lightly accompanied. "Awesome" is exactly that, powerful, uplifting, beautifully arranged and harmonized by one of the best Contemporary Christian groups of all time!

Songlist: Come Christians, My Saviour's Love, Saviour Like A Shepherd Lead Us, Create in Me, Grateful Hearts, Awesome God / Our God Reigns, No Business Doubting, Exalt His Name Together, Wonderous Love, Were You There?, In This Thing Together, You Have Been Good

Haven Quartet : Be Ye Holy

Review: Prolific five-man (Glenn Shoemaker, Randy Crenshaw, Steve Ragsdale, Dwayne Condon and Walt Harrah) The Haven Quartet, of the Haven of Rest Ministries in Hollywood, CA, brings us another nice collection of Gospel tunes and hymns, "Be Ye Holy." The Haven Quartet is using a lot more accompaniment now, in fact the lovely "A Quiet Place" and traditional parting wish "God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again" are the only a cappella songs out of 14 on "Be Ye Holy." But listen to "O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing," one of our favorite hymns, "How Great Thou Art," "Door To Your Heart," "O God Our Help In Ages Past," "Hallelujah, What A Savior" and "Our Great Savior"--these are all triumphant anthems of faith, beautifully harmonized and filled with adoration and praise. A cappella or accompanied, The Haven Quartet's ministry of music continues to be beautifully comforting and uplifting!

Songlist: O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing, I Sing the Mighty Power of God, How Great Thou Art, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, A Quiet Place, Be Ye Holy, Door to Your Heart, O God our Help in Ages Past, Come thou Fount of Every Blessing, At The Cross, There is a Redeemer, Hallelujah, what a Savior, Our Great Savior, God Be With You 'Til we Meet Again

Haven Quartet : Best of Vol 1

Review: On the occasion (in 2002) of their 68th year as a group, from "The Haven of Rest Quartet" to the present "Haven," this talented Gospel quartet has been spreading their ministry through music. Performing as the musical arm of Haven of Rest radio broadcast ministry on pioneer radio station KFI in Los Angeles, the group has gone through many personnel changes and created an extensive catalog of Gospel recordings. "Best Of, Vol.1" has 17 traditional favorite hymns, some of them going back decades. Particularly fine are "The Haven of Rest," "I'm Climbing Up," "In The Garden," "Like A River Glorious," "Day by Day," "Motherless Child," "He Hideth My Soul," "What A Friend" (recorded in 1947), and the classic "How Great Thou Art"-this is upbeat, inspirational music, sung with great feeling and joy. There is organ and other accompaniment on some songs.

Songlist: The Haven of Rest, I'm Climbin' Up, Make My Life A Miracle, Come Away, In The Garden, Like A River Glorious, The Deep Deep Love, Total Praise, And Can It Be, Eagles Fly, Day by Day, Until Then, Motherless Child, He Who Holds Us, He Hideth my Soul, What A Friend, How Great Thou Art

Haven Quartet : Best of Vol 2

Review: This is the second volume of Haven's "Best Of" collection, and it features 18 songs. The opening cut, "Theme/How Majestic Is Your Name" includes some 1969 Haven of Rest radio broadcast ministry nautical references, as the program referred to Jesus metaphorically as a haven or safe harbor for sinners. "In The Cool of the Evening," "He's Been Faithful," "How Sweet and Silent Is," "He Touched Me," "No More Night," "No Business Doubting," "Change My Heart O God," "Worthy Is The Lamb," and "Hallelujah, I'm One of His"-we haven't heard many of these before, but they are beautiful tunes filled with spirit and praise by one of the best Gospel quartets of all time. Orchestral, organ and other accompaniment on most songs.

Songlist: Theme/How Majestic Is Your Name, Using Things and Loving People, In the cool of Evening, He's been Faithful, You Are Worthy of My Praise, He Gives Me Joy, How Sweet and Silent Is, He Touched Me, No More Night, His Name is Wonderful, No Business Doubting, Just As I Am, He Died For Us, Change My Heart O God, Worthy Is the Lamb, The King Is Coming, Halleluiah, I'm One of His, Open the Eyes of my Heart

Haven Quartet : Coming Home

Review: The Haven Quartet is a daily part of the Haven of Rest radio broadcast, which has now been aired continuously for 60 years. Here Haven is Steve Ragsdale and Glenn Shoemaker in addition to longtime veterans Randy Crenshaw and Walt Harrah, and the group is sounding better than ever. They also are using much more accompaniment now--"To God Be The Glory" and "Give Thanks," in fact, are the only a cappella cuts. There are keyboards, guitar, bass and drums, but the rich harmonies, powerful leads and spiritual feeling are still very much present. Listen to the title tune, "Holy Holy Holy," "Joy Comes in the Morning," "He Will Provide," "Think About His Love" and the final cut, "Mighty Wonderful"--these are all uplifting, joyous tunes that inspire and comfort, and that's what The Haven Quartet has always been about!

Songlist: Blessed Be the Name, Holy Holy Holy, To God be the Glory, Coming Home, Joy Comes In the Morning, Balm in Gilead, He will Provide, Great Is thy Faithfulness, Give Thanks, Think About His Love, Mighty Wonderful

Haven Quartet : Enter In

Review: The mission of Costa Mesa, CA-based Haven Ministries is to "communicate God's love in the person of Jesus Christ through word and music," helping people overcome the storms of life." They do this through a radion program "Haven Today," and especially through the group Haven, composed of Walt Harrah, Jeff Gunn, Randy Crenshaw and Bill Cantos. "Enter In," with a dramatic door opening to Heaven on the cover, is, although mostly accompanied throughout with keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and percussion, excellent Contemporary Christian music by one of the most talented groups going. Some of our favorites are the lone completely a cappella tune, "Better Is One Day," the accompanied "In the Lord Alone," "You Are My King," "In Christ Alone," "The Holy Heart" (which has wonderful a cappella harmonies and is only lightly accompanied by a single flute) and "Our Great God," We haven't heard most of these before, but they are beautifully performed with spirit and feeling. Another inspirational winner by Haven, one of our most popular Contemporary Christian groups!

Songlist: Come, Now Is the Time To Worship, I Could Sing of Your Love, The Heart of Worship, Better Is One Day, In the Lord Alone, God of Wonders, You Are My King (Amazing Love), That's Why We Praise Him, In Christ Alone, Because of Love, Shine, Jesus, Shine, Open the Eyes of My Heart, The Power of Your Love, The Holy Heart, Our Great God

Haven Quartet : Everything's Gonna Be Alright

Review: Continuing a musical ministry begun in Los Angeles in 1934, the 4-man Haven Quartet, now based in Hollywood, CA, is one of the most popular, respected and prolific groups in the Contemporary Christian world. "Everything's Gonna Be All Right in Christ" has all the elements that we have come to expect from a new release from Haven: innovative arrangements, pure, sweet leads and harmonies, and a heartfelt message of faith. One unusual addition is accompaniment on all songs, which is tasteful, not overpowering and puts the focus on the voices and the message. We've heard each one of these 12 powerful, clean-sounding cuts many times, but as we listen to them, we don't think of them as "covers," but hear them as if for the first time. "Praise to the Lord," "All Hail the Power," the title tune, "Lord, I Want to be a Christian," "Be Still My Soul," "Early In The Morning," "Softly and Tenderly," and a personal favorite, "How Great Thou Art," are some of the most powerful songs of Christian faith ever written, and Haven simply nails every one. One of the best of the year!

Songlist: Praise to the Lord, All Hail The Power, Everything Gonna Be Alright, The Love of God, Lord, I Want To Be A Christian, Be Strong, Be Still My Soul, Common Ground, Early In The Morning, Every Heart That Is Breaking, Softly and Tenderly, How Great Thou Art

Haven Quartet : So Many Ways To Praise

Review: Ephesians 5:19 tells us, "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord," and Haven Ministries, especially through the Haven Quartet, has definitely taken heed! "So Many Ways" is yet another joyous, perfectly crafted, feel-good Contemporary Christian CD. Though accompanied with keyboards, guitar, bass and drums, the emphasis is on the fine voices of Randy Crenshaw, Bill Cantos, Jeff Gunn and Walt Harrah. 15 songs are here: "Give To Our God Immortal Praise," "People Be Thankful," "Good To Me," "Awesome God/Our God Reigns," "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "Be Thou My Vision," "Be Still My Soul," "He Giveth More Grace," "Blessed Are The People," "I Take My Rest," "A River To My Soul," "Living Water," "Not What I Will," "We Choose To Bow" and "He Is Lord." We can sing along, clap your hands, get up and dance, or just feel good, listening to this powerful, spiritual music!

Songlist: Give To Our God Immortal Praise, People Be Thankful, Good To Me, Awesome God/Our God Reigns, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Be Thou My Vision, Be Still, My Soul, He Giveth More Grace, Blessed Are the People, I Take My Rest, A River To My Soul, Living Water, Not What I Will, We Choose To Bow, He Is Lord

Haven Quartet : Something To Sing About

Review: Since the last very successful release they've sent us, 'A Cappella Hymns,' Haven Ministries has established a powerful presence on the internet, and the Haven Quartet, now called Haven, are getting better and better! They are Walt Harrah (who is also producer), Bill Cantos, Jeff Gunn and Randy Crenshaw - yes, he's that Randy Crenshaw, whose singing on Vocal Nation and Just 4 Kicks has left quite a mark on our community. First let us warn that all the songs are accompanied by keyboards, guitar, bass and drums, but for us the story is the voices. In the complexity of harmony, arrangements and sophisticated production, the sound easily rivals that of groups like Take 6, Glad and Acappella - a sound both inspirational and esthetically delightful. 12 songs, all soft-rock, all lovely: from beautifully arranged traditionals like 'I Love To Tell The Story' and 'Amazing Grace' to originals like 'Lord, I Lift Your Name on High,' 'No Greater Love,' 'By One Man,' 'O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus,' 'Except In the Cross' and the final cut, 'I Press On.' This one will have you rocking and singing along!

Songlist: Lord, I Lift Your Name on High, He is Exalted / Great is the Lord, No Greater Love, I Love to Tell the Story, Amazing Grace! How Sweet the Sound, By One Man, O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, There is a Fountain, Galatians, Except in the Cross, I Have Decided to Follow Jesus, I Press On

Heaven's Playground : Heaven's Playground

Review: Young contemporary Christian quintet from Washington state, who obviously know their Motown soul. As such, they don't sound much like fellow Christian groups like the AVB or Rescue; Heaven's Playground place less emphasis on state-of-the-art production and multitracking, and more on punchy rhythms and vertically structured harmonies. This is within the context of songs such as 'Sir Duke,' 'Fly Away' (written by Cedric Dent), and the guitar-accompanied 'Workin' For Da Man,' which should become a rockabilly cult classic - very cool minor chord derived harmonies give it the feel of genuine lament. The recitation intro of 'Have You Seen Her,' along with the arrangement and even the stylistic inflections, are an uncannily accurate rendering of 1960's doo-wop/soul. The final track? That pillar of the barbershop pantheon, 'Coney Island Baby.' These guys are fun.

Songlist: Change In My Life, Sir Duke, Fly Away, Workin For Da Man, People Get Ready, Have You Seen Her?, Shine On Us, Brotherlove, I'll Be Whatever You Want Me To Be, Coney Island Baby

Johnny Mann Singers : Nearer My God to Thee

Review: Johnny Mann paid some serious dues, boasting 39 albums arranged and conducted for his Singers, a 3-year stint on national tv on Chevrolet's "Stand Up and Cheer," 5 nominations and two Grammies merely scratch the iceberg of this man's musical resume. "Nearer" is a collection of 10 hymns plus "The Star Spangled Banner," and it lets you know immediately that here is a deep, talented ensemble, trained and directed by a master arranger, and every song touches us, no matter how many times we may have heard it before. Listen to the sweet tenor solo on "Fairest Lord Jesus," the harmonies on "Shadows of the Evening," "The Church is One Foundation," the title tune, "Hark, Hark My Soul," "Hosanna" and "Now the Day is Over." This is how these hymns should be directed and sung, and, forgive us, Johnny was the Mann who could make it happen!

Songlist: Nearer My God To Thee, Faith Of Our Fathers, Fairest Lord Jesus, We Plow The Fields, Shadows Of The Evening, The Church's One Foundation, Hark Hark My Soul, Hosanna, Abide With Me, The Star Spangled Banner, Now The Day is Over

King's Heralds : Anthology Vol 2

Review: The heritage of the ministry of the Thousand-Oaks, CA-based male Gospel quartet King's Heralds goes back to four young college students who came together to sing in Keene, Texas in 1927, and continues today for the present King's Heralds, the oldest continuous Gospel Quartet in America. Twenty-nine men have been a part of the quartet, and they have recorded in 30 languages, on over 100 albums and toured over fifty countries. The current members, Don, Joel, Russell and Jeff, have 5 excellent CDs and one DVD in the PAC catalog. There are 16 classic tunes here, from the accompanied, jazzy "City of Light," the a cappella spiritual "You Better Mind," and the richly harmonic "I'd Rather Have Jesus" to the lightly accompanied "One Thing I Ask," "Pass Me Not," and the spirituals "Just a Little While," and the a cappella "Si'Down Servant," this is all spirited, deeply-felt, beautifully sung Gospel music. The a cappella songs "In a Little While We're Going Home" and "There Must Be A City" are simply beautiful. Much more accompaniment than we're used to with the King's Heralds, but the vocals and harmonies are as wonderful as ever!

Songlist: City of Light, You Better Mind, Ave Verum, I'd Rather Have Jesus, There's a Light Upon the Mountain, One Thing I Ask, Pass Me Not, Just a Little While, I Am Saved by the Blood, Sit Down Servant, Know by the Scars, Look How Far You've Come, In a Little While We're Going Home, Just a Closer Walk With Thee, You'll Never Walk Alone, There Must Be A City

King's Heralds : Encores

Review: It's pretty clear from the first few notes from Simi Valley, CA's honey-voiced veteran male Gospel quartet The King's Heralds that we're in for a treat. "Encores" is all about spirituals: "Walk in Jerusalem Just Like John," "Now Don't You Let Nobody Turn You 'Round," "Good News, Chariot's A-Comin'," "(If We Ever Needed the Lord Before) We Sure Do Need Him Now," "There's A New Name In Glory," "Children Keep In the Middle of the Road"... this is inspirational Gospel sung with some of the best deep-bass harmonies we've heard. But it's the feeling behind the music, the spiritual mission of the aptly named King's Heralds that takes "Encores" beyond the usual. Their powerful belief, joyous words and sweet harmonies make this CD very special indeed!

Songlist: Walk In Jerusalem, Now Don't you Let Nobody Turn You 'Round, Good News, Chariots A-Comin', If We Ever Need The Lord Before, Prayer of Our Lord Jesus, Children Keep In The Middle Of The Road, O Lord Of Space, Walk That Milky White Way, Just A Little Talk With Jesus, Old Time Religion, Champion Of Love, Still, Still With Thee, Reprise Walk In Jerusalem
