Review: Resonance: The Art of the Choral Music Educator by Dr. Christopher W. Peterson is a new collegiate methods textbook written specifically for today's emerging choral music teachers, guiding their growth as curious students while enriching their passion for changing lives through music. The textbook is written in a straight-forward and conversational style that compels the reader to think rather than to memorize and to problem solve rather than find the correct answer. Professors can use this book as a stand-alone text for choral methods, or as a supplement to an established syllabus and curriculum. Practicing educators may want to use these resources and refer back to this book throughout their professional career.

Review: This first collection of five carols samples the vast spectrum of festive musical fare that still lies at the heart of the English Christmas tradition. The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for sound to create the portmanteau word sound together or harmony. The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

Review: Boosey & Hawkes is pleased to present a three-volume collection of John Adams's choruses from his world-renowned operas, edited by conductor Grant Gershon, featuring choral selections from six iconic stage works with newly arranged piano accompaniment by Chitose Okashiro. Adams's stage works are repertory staples at opera houses across the world, celebrated for their exceptional craft, emotional resonance, and urgently relevant subject matter. The LA Times described the role of Adams's choruses in his operas as a powerful narrative and emotional driver: They are the weather. They are memories. They are dreams. They are fears. They are history. They are the governors of emotion. Volume 3 features all seven choruses from Adams's second opera The Death of Klinghoffer, a fictionalized account of the infamous Achille Lauro incident of 1985, in which Palestinian terrorists boarded an Italian cruise ship, held its passengers and crew hostage, and killed an elderly Jewish, wheelchair-bound American named Leon Klinghoffer. Influenced by the Bach Passions, the work crosses boundaries between opera and oratorio, with a series of choruses that run through the opera and range from powerful (Night Chorus) to ethereal (Ocean Chorus) to tender (Day Chorus). The Klinghoffer choruses are also available in a published collection for chorus and orchestra, for concert presentations. Listen to The Death of Klinghoffer

Review: Historically, the arts have always fulfilled the dual roles of responding to change while at the same time creating change. Weather is a poem that gives voice to the voiceless, especially those who have been and continue to be marginalized because of difference. It responds to and reflects realities that are both culturally specific and humanly universal. Professor Claudia Rankine challenges all of us (no matter your background or lived experience) to know better, to do better, to take action, and to become agents of social justice and social change. This work for choir, narrator, piano with optional Wind Symphony or Chamber ensemble, is to be a learning and growing experience for the singers, the audience, and the conductor teacher in all ways emotional and intellectual . There is a companion resource for Weather that is intended for students, educators, conductors, and audiences to learn more about the social, political, and historical context of this work. This guide offers an opportunity for everyone to deply engage with Weather and understand its critically important social and historical context. The guide, created by Dr. Colleen Sears, Professor of Music at The College of New Jersey, encourages us to honor the intent of Claudia Rankine's poetry and Rollo Dilworth's music; to become better citizens in our communities and to bridge divides through our shared humanity.

Review: Inspired by Debra Spurgeon's pioneering book Conducting Women's Choirs, this companion resource, compiled and edited by Donald Trott, brings together the expertise of eighteen acknowledged authorities on men's choirs. Conducting Men's Choirs addresses the unique challenges, considerations, and joys of making music with male singers.
The book is organized into three major sections, the first of which contains historical essays on male choirs in the United States. The chapters in this section span a range of relevant topics, including glee clubs in colleges and universities, an examination of some of the nation's most esteemed and accomplished male choirs, and the role of male community choruses in America.
The second section explores key aspects of working with male singers that are vital to the success of any conductor of male choirs. A thorough discussion of repertoire for men's choirs rounds out this resource in the book's third and final section. Chapter authors explore men's choir repertoire from a variety of angles: Renaissance music, works by Schumann, Canadian repertoire, and the music of Veljo Tormis. Extensive repertoire listings with hundreds of titles for men's chorus are also provided for quick and easy reference.

Review: Why don't classical musicians improvise? Why do jazz players get to have all the fun? And how do improvisers develop such fabulous technique and aural skills?
With this book, Jeffrey Agrell and Patrice Madura Ward-Steinman open the door to improvisation for all non-jazz musicians who thought it was beyond their ability to play extemporaneously. Gently, step by step, Agrell and Madura lead us through a series of games rather than exercises. The game format takes the pressure off of classically trained musicians, steering them away from their fixation on mistake-free performance and introducing the basic concepts of playing with music itself instead of obsessing over a perfect rendition of a written score.
States authors: "Playing duets from the ink is fun and full of musical vitamins, but it needs a complimentary aural approach to develop all-around musicianship." Vocal Improvisation Games for Singers and Choral Groups provide that complementary approach.

Review: Singing is an integral part of any music classroom, but the voice works differently than other instruments and needs its own specific strategies. Whether you're an instrumentalist who finds yourself teaching choir, or a vocalist who is an expert at singing, this book can make your rehearsals more successful. Beginning with an exhortation to use your own voice as a singing example - even if it's not perfect - it presents all the skills your singers need to learn: posture, diction, pitch, notation, and the list goes on. Each chapter offers a clear overview of a singing goal, then lists several strategies you can use to achieve it with your group
Review: Teaching Music through Performance in Contemporary ACappella is the essential book for a cappella repertoire and rehearsal techniques, compiled and edited by educators and leaders committed to demystifying the genre and providing teachers with access to the best repertoire and pedagogy possible.
Built on the model of the best-selling Teaching Music through Performance series, this volume includes chapters on the most important issues in teaching and learning contemporary a cappella, and analysis and insights for 82 works across genres: Barbershop, Contemporary A cappella, Doo-wop, Folk/Classical, Vocal Jazz.
The list of composers and arrangers is diverse; the repertoire includes both arrangements and original compositions. Each selection is representative of a major a cappella trend or historical event, such as repertoire from The Sing-Off, Pitch Perfect, The Real Group, Sweet Adelines, or Pentatonix. Of course, every selection-regardless of musical style-is performed a cappella.
The authors also develop a five-point difficulty scale for evaluating literature, and each guide contains detailed information about the arrangement or composition, including where the arrangement was first performed, the history of the original song, and the styles it represents.

Review: This important resource is the culmination of a lifelong dream of author Melissa M. Mills to share the wisdom of many of the most influential community children's choir directors in North America, especially those responsible for pioneering and shaping this wonderful art form.
Across two volumes, Mills collects and organizes interviews with 23 expert conductors. Through their conversations, Mills gleans wisdom about their training, teaching philosophy, motivations, and practice, and provides a special focus from each conductor on topics ranging from assigning vocal parts and teaching healthy tone production to planning rehearsals and developing independent musicians.
Teachers of young singers will find a broad and deep exploration of the issues that conductors must consider, leading to more purposeful instruction and increased effectiveness in the choral setting. The philosophies and principles discussed in these books offer insights for teachers of the youngest singers through teenagers, in all choral settings (children's choirs, church choirs, and elementary, middle, and high school choirs).
The growing interest in both community children's choirs and choral conducting philosophy makes Working with Young Singers a timely and invaluable resource for all choral music educators.

Review: Offers a new understanding of the connection between performance, repertoire, music theory, sight-reading, improvisation, and musicological knowledge. Uses a Performance to Notation model for teaching music theory in the context of the choral rehearsal. Provides choral directors with a curriculum and rehearsal models that place performance, audiation, partwork, music theory, and sight-signing skills at the heart of the choral experience
Review: Choral Sight Reading provides a practical and organic approach to teaching choral singing and sight-reading. The text is grounded in current research from the fields of choral pedagogy, music theory, music perception and cognition. Topics include framing a choral curriculum based on the Kodaly concept; launching the academic year for beginning, intermediate, and advanced choirs; building partwork skills; sight-reading; progressive music theory sequences for middle to college level choirs; teaching strategies; choral rehearsal plans as well as samples of how to teach specific repertoire from medieval to contemporary choral composers.
This volume includes basic and advanced music theory concepts to develop fluent sight-reading skills for reading standard choral repertoire, providing examples for the process outlined in Chapters 6-8 of Volume 1 (Choral Artistry). This guide provides choral directors with a choral curriculum and choral rehearsal models that place performance, audiation, partwork, music theory, and sight-signing skills at the heart of the choral experience, through a 'sound thinking' approach to teaching that results in greater efficiency in creating independent choral singers with a well-rounded repertoire. Provides the practical applications of theories outlined in Volume 1 (Choral Artistry)
Review: This is the perfect gift for all the choral people in your life. Renowned composer/arranger Roger Emerson has been keeping notes of wise words from the many choral mentors in his life - conductors, composers, producers, publishers. His way of passing on these stories is as clever, delightful and often humorous as his musical writing. (Did I just call his music writing humorous?). Plus, the lessons are spot on and priceless. Find out what choralisms really means and get a copy of this book for yourself.
