Various Arrangers : World Folk Songs for Women's Voices, Vol. 2

Review: This eclectic collection contains six diverse gems for female singers. "Freedom Come"is in the style of a South African freedom song: creating an atmosphere in which hope can increase, healing can occur, and connections to our common humanity can be strengthened. "Waly, Waly" is a masterful setting of a well-loved, Scottish ballad that is rich in harmonic texture. "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" is a beautiful arrangement of an American folk hymn written for the Brigham Young University Women's Chorus. "Melodijas" is a Latvian text by J. Sudrabkalns wherein musical concepts become metaphors for the complexities of life. Peteris Barisons's arrangement enhances the meaning of the text while simultaneously evoking rich, warm tone and expressive delivery. "Sulle Mulle" features Barbershop-style singing, composed by Alo Ritsing, esteemed teacher, composer and conductor at the Heino Eller Music School in Estonia. Finally, "Wana Baraka" is a popular, religious Kenyan song, arranged by Shawn Kirchner to express the quality of joy and improvisation that comes with spontaneous music-making.

Songlist: Freedom Come, Waly, Waly, Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Melodijas, Wana Baraka

Various Arrangers : World Folk Songs for Women's Voices, Vol. 3

Review: Mellifluous Samoan lull words, like "manulele" (bird), and "suamalie," (sweet) are the basis for the hypnotic lullaby of repeated and recombined pentatonic patterns, titled 'Malolo.' Accessible to average choirs, this piece, with its subtle rhythmic interest and carefully crafted dynamic changes, is rewarding for more advanced choirs as well. The "macho march" setting of the Israeli pioneer song, 'Artsa Alina,' makes fine use of rapid alternation between unisons and vigorous chords. This one is a rouser! The Hebrew text is phonetically underlaid, with full Hebrew text and translation, with prononciation guide, included. Because 'K'wae-jina ching-ching nah-neh' builds on repeating short verses and refrains, this song of warning and complaint is accessible to western singers. Suggestions for performance alternatives give additional flexibility. The Korean text is underlaid phonetically, with full Korean text and translation, and guides to pronunciation, given as well. The haunting melody of 'Shenandoah' is variously placed against pedal points, with unison phrase closings, in the alto line, and at close imitation, to give the acoustic feeling of the singers' listening and longing for the sound of the beloved. Lush voicing and the subtle rhythmic texture of the choral accompaniment highlight the simple appeal of 'Suo Gan.' With full Welsh text and phonetic rendition underlaid in the score, and word-by-word and prose translations.

Songlist: Malolo (Lullaby on a Samoan text)., Artsa alinu (We have come up to the land), K'wae-jina ching-ching nah-neh, Shenandoah, Suo-Gan

Russell Robinson : Renaissance Chorals for Mixed Voices

Review: Some choral classics from the Renaissance period. First published in 1603, the quintessential John Dowland madrigal "Weep You No More Sad Fountains" has been newly edited by Russell Robinson. SATB and 3-part mixed choirs will enjoy the lush texture and rich harmonic structure, which exemplifies music of the Renaissance era, and appreciate the high quality of Dr. Robinson's tidy edition. Solid choral repertoire. Long a standard in the choral repertoire, Palestrina's "Adoramus Te" continues to be a favorite for contest or festival. Range is excellent for the SATB junior high choir. Sixteenth century Italian composer Adriano Banchieri must have had quite the sense of humor. The classic light-hearted concert work "Counterpoint Of The Animals" has been a staple in choral repertoire for decades. Now Russell Robinson brings us a new setting that will add a touch of classy fun to any serious concert. Glorious polyphony soars in this edition of Victoria's "O Magnum Mysterium". Long melismas and fugal entrances are part of the beauty of this great Renaissance work. For contest, festival or concert use.

Songlist: Two Renaissance Chorals (Adoramus Te / Ave Maria), O Magnum Mysterium, Fa Una Canzona, Counterpoint of the Animals, Weep You No More, Sad Fountains, Adoramus Te

Various Arrangers : Early Music for Men's Voices

Review: This is a fine collection of unaccompanied music from some of the master's of the golden age of polyphony. Missa Ave Regina Coelorum (c.1464) is Dufay's crowning achievement and we know that Dufay requested that this Angus Dei be sung on his deathbed. Crucifixus was originally intended for solo voices, but is transcribed here for four-part male chorus. It may be sung effectively by solo voices, chamber choir, or full chorus. Everybody's repertoire should include some examples of this early music style and are both fun and interesting to perform. This music has been sung for 500 plus years and still continues to please!

Songlist: Du Tout Plongiet, Sanctus from the Mass for Four Voices, O How Amiable Are Thy Dwellings, O Sacrum Convivium, Angus Dei from 'Missa Ave Regina Coelorum', Crucifixus

Various Arrangers : Early Music for Mixed Voices

Review: "O Magnum Mysterium" was written in the late Renaissance period by Tomas Luis de Victoria, this beautiful piece captures the wonder and mystique of Christ's birth. Russell Robinson has arranged O Magnum Mysterium, making it more accessible to both school and church choirs, by setting it in a slightly higher key than the original, and with notation that is more easily understood. The music of the Renaissance has a pure clarity of sound that every singer should experience. Ruth Elaine Schram's setting of "Agnus Dei" is a lush setting with parts intertwining in the most unexpected ways, forming uniquely beautiful harmonies. The cyclical nature of the piece reiterates the meaning of the text, a fervent prayer, "Lamb of God, grant us peace." Festival or contest piece for schools, and a moving Lenten anthem for the sanctuary. A passionate Latin text, "Adoramus Te" embodies all of the purity and pristine beauty of Renaissance music. Sung a capella, this reverent masterwork may be used in concert, contest, or festival settings by school or church groups. Appropriate for high school children. Robert Shaw commissioned Chester Alwes to make an edition of Tomas Luis de Victoria's motet, "O Vos Omnes", which was to be sung as part of the Robert Shaw Summer Festival in France. Robert Shaw has added tempo indication and expressive and dynamic marks, which indicates his feelings about how the piece should be realized in contemporary performance giving modern conductors the guidance of one of America's foremost choral musicians. The a cappella madrigal from the high Renaissance "Adieu, Sweet Amaryllis" is now available as a choral. It features opportunities for dynamic contrasts and development of musical line. John Leavitt has edited the piece with optional cue notes to make the tenor range more accessible to a larger group of singers. This madrigal is stunningly beautiful. This buoyant Spanish love song"Catinga" includes words by Gil Vincente and extols the beauty of one beyond compare, asking sailor, soldier, and shepherd if they have ever seen such loveliness. Cantiga is sung a cappella, with the voices simulating the strumming of a guitar and providing percussive accompaniment to the melody. Great fun!

Various Arrangers : Mediaeval Songs for Female Voices

Review: "O Virgin Resplendent" - A late medieval canon, moving almost entirely in fluid eighth-note triplets, comes to rest at the end of each phrase. Edited by Mark Winges for the Piedmont Children's Choirs, this piece works beautifully as a processional. "Marriage bed of Chastity" - This lively 13th-century conductus from the Las Huelgas manuscript, with added optional percussion parts, makes a very effective processional. Mary is the "marriage bed of chastity" sought by God the Father for bearing the Son. "O frondens virga" - This new edition of Hildegard's antiphon places it in its liturgical context, pairing it with a plainchant "Magnificat" (included in this edition by William Flynn). The reprise of the antiphon has an optional added voice in organum, reflecting medieval performance practice. Latin, with full translation and historical and performance notes. "Dancing" - "I stumble and tumble," begins this freely-rendered medieval text, set in 6/4 over a delightfully lurching scat ostinato in 12/8. Written for the women of the Cornell University Chorus, it works easily when conducted in a big 2. English. "Circle" - In this medieval mystic text the circle is an image for meditation, first excluding, then embracing, the world. The musical setting reflects the image with contracting and expanding textures, and a soprano solo.

Songlist: O Virgo Splendens (O Virgin Resplendent), Castitatis thalamum (Marriage bed of chastity), O frondens virga (O branch, coming into leaf), Dancing, Circle

"If Ye Love Me" is one of the most recognized anthems from the English Renaissance, in a new adaptation specifically geared to the limits of younger voices and middle school choirs. Various Arrangers : Praise and Worship

Review: And now for something completely different for Advent! So much of our traditional music for the season of waiting is slow and in a minor key. The emphasis is on longing and despair. John Parker and David Lantz break the mold with 'Great Day A-Comin,' an exuberant neo-spiritual, Great Day A-Comin'. Focusing on the joy to come, this exciting a cappella number simply bubbles over with good cheer. A spirited change for the later weeks of Advent. Donald Moore's 4 part arrangement of 'Beautiful Savior' is a beautiful take on the Silesian melody, a great worship piece! 'Wonderful Savior' is a simple, yet expressive arrangement of the familiar hymn tune, BENTON HARBOR. Careful stepwise voice leading aids in learning and creates a seamless harmonic effect. The distinctive second verse set in minor is quite effective. For Lent, Holy Week, or as preparation for a time of prayer, this beloved hymn anthem is very moving. Spirited and sparkling, Jay Althouse's 'Alleluia' is the perfect all-occasion octavo. Available in women's or SATB voicings, this cheerful a cappella anthem is appropriate for church or school use, in concert, contest, festival, or worship settings. 'Nearer, My God, to Thee' is lovely and very moving. Pure, pristine harmonies reflect the simple desires of this prayer. Yet as the yearnings intensify with each verse, so do the textures and tone colors of this wonderful a cappella arrangement. The third verse, in particular, has some fabulous dissonances and rhythmic effects.

Felix Mendelssohn : Three Choral Songs

Review: 'The Nightingale (Die Nachtigall)' was composted on June 19, 1843 and published as No. 4 in Sechs Lieder, Op 59. Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goeth, based on a Greek folksong published in 'Chants populaires de la Grece moderne' with French translations by Claude Charles Fauriel accompanying the original texts. Goethe's version, published in 1827 is entitled 'Landlich, though Mendelssohn preferred the title given here. 'The Woodland Singers (Die Waldvogelein)' was composed on June 19, 1843 and published as No 4 in Sechs Lieder, Op 88. The author of the words, given simply as Scutz, is almost certainly heinrich Schutz who published a volume of 'Vermischte Gedichte' at Karlsruhe in 1841. 'Song for the New Year (Neujahrslied)' was composed on August 8, 1844 and published posthumously as No 1 in Sechs Lieder, Op 88. Words by Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826). An ideal selection for jazz, pop and concert choirs from high school and up. The lush a cappella setting of the powerful ballad I Dreamed A Dream is memorable and will surely be a concert favorite.
