Salamu Aleikum : Choral Music of the Muslim World

Review: Muslim choral music? There are numerous examples of group singing in the Muslim world, almost all of which is non-notated. Many of these group singing genres date back several centuries, such as the genre of Arab music called the muwashshahat, a song tradition that started in Muslim Spain and has continued vigorously until modern times. While there are numerous examples of Muslim group singing, notated part-singing is a product of colonization, Westernization, Christianization, and now globalization. It is becoming increasingly popular for composers in the Muslim world to arrange and compose music for the Western-style choir, and this collection serves to introduce participants to the breadth of Muslim culture, some Muslim songs, and the great diaspora of music of the Muslim world through a selection of pieces from different social, and cultural contexts.

Stephen Leek : Aussie Songs

Review: "Kumbargung" - One of the easiest and most immediately appealing from Stephen Leek's In Construction series. It is suitable for singers of all ages and uses indigenous Australian words that are spoken in rhythm at various pitch levels. "Kumbargung" means "night" and other evocative words include "ungi gungi" (grasshopper) and "goolay yali" (pelican). A delight for all ages! "Tunggare" means "voice" or "to sing" in an Australian dialect. This is a wonderful opening or closing to a concert. There is much repetition and very easy tenor and bass parts, so it is perfect for a high school choir (and other choirs as well!). It may also be used as a choral piece for audience participation. "Riawanna" is an Australian native word for "circles" and the piece is a do-it-yourself round with thousands of possibilities. It includes mixed meters. The final instruction in the accompanying notes says it all: "have fun".

Songlist: Kumbargung, Riawanna, Tunggare

Stephen Leek : Songs Of Passage

Review: Stephen Leek's famous work from Songs of Passage. "Ngana" means "shark" and the piece strikingly captures the driving energies, rhythms and vivid colors of the island seascape found around the northeastern tip of Australia. Pronounced "ungahyullyull" meaning "hawk dreaming". The text reflects the thoughts of the sheep farmer herding his sheep, ever aware of the hawk circling overhead. The second of Stephen Leek's Songs of Passage, this is a highly evocative and beautiful composition using easy but effective modern compositional techniques. The music includes "boxes" of material for singers to work through as well as traditionally scored sections. The writing is easy to sing though it contains some chord clusters. Some song texts in an Australian Aboriginal language, some in English. Lots of fun here!

Songlist: Ngana, Ngayulyul, Coraparena, Ceduna, Tabulam

Various Arrangers : Caribbean Christmas

Review: Escape to a tropical paradise this Christmas with this happy holiday song! Bright Caribbean rhythms and buoyant melodies add a special sparkle. "Haitian Noel" - The Haitian folk carol is in the style of a Merengue and will give your concert Caribbean sparkle! A pronunciation guide is provided for the Creole lyrics and English lyrics are also included. "The Virgin Mary Had A Baby Boy" - This arrangement explores the Caribbean style known as "Afro-Cuban": independent melodic lines with strong rhythmic pulses are superimposed to build up textures that are both rich and translucent. Every section of the choir is spot-lit; every section gets its turn to lead. The piece would especially suit a choir in search of something seasonal but upbeat which is not a "novelty number."

Various Arrangers : Folk Songs of the Philippines

Review: Chua-ay is based on a popular folksong in the Philippines that depicts the Igorot tribes at work, pounding rice by means of a huge mortar and heavily weighted posts in order to separate the rice grains from their outer shells or husks. The piece begins with bird-calls serenely chanted by two sopranos and followed by a set of rhythmic vari- ations on the repetitive three-note theme of Chua-ay. Foot stomps suggest the mortar and pestle action that also enhances the earthy character of this northern folksong. Leron, Leron sinta or "My Dear, Little Leron," is a popular Filipino folk song from the Tagalog region. It is traditionally a work song, reprsenting those who work in the fields harvesting fruits, though the origin is unclear due to the lack of scholarly literature that examines Philippine folk music. Because of its catchy tune, it is often presented as a children's song, though some parts of the text may have been meant for a more mature audience. Some sources also refer to it as a courtship song. "Ilay Gandangan" is a popular piece among Filipino choirs. Derived from a sun chant of the Maguindanao tribe, the people call on the sun god, Ilay, to end the rain that is covering the land.

Songlist: Chua-ay, Ilay Gandangan, Leron, Leron Sinta, Mamayog Akun

Various Arrangers : Japanese Folk Songs

Review: Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry comprised of three lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Jerry Estes has crafted a set of four short pieces set to original haiku... one for each season of the year. All are beautiful in their simplicity. Well suited for Orff accompaniment; bells and rhythm instrument parts are included in the publication. An outstanding learning and performing piece for 2-part choirs. A delicate melody swirls and twirls like drifting snow in this tasteful arrangement of a traditional Japanese school song "Yuki". The three short Japanese phrases (and several English words) are easy-to-learn and bring to mind icy images of wintertime. "Uji River" is the most unique multicultural piece you will sing this year. A primarily English text tells the spectacular story of an ancient Japanese fishing tradition on the Uji River. And a traditional Asian folk melody floats above a gentle koto-like piano. Magical for treble voices, and highly effective when TB singers sound like fishermen. Tsuki means "moon," and is one of just a few Japanese words sung in this pentatonic scale-based song. Other words describe the beauty of the Japanese moon throughout the year. A captivating and memorable piece.

Songlist: Four Seasons of Haiku, Japanese Snow Song (Yuki), Uji River, Tsuki (Japanese Moon), Sing Hallelu!

Various Arrangers : Music from Mongolia

Review: The exuberant arrangement of an Eastern Inner Mongolian folk song "Dorven Dalai' exhorts everyone from the Four Seas (the "four corners of the earth" or all nations) to fill their wine bowls with the best of wine, to rejoice and sing and enjoy this moment of happiness together. "Naiman Sharag" - Mongolian songs often praise horses, real and legendary, reflecting the close relationship between horses and humans. A 13th century chronicle refers to the eight chestnut horses of Chinggis Khan, and they have thus become a symbol of national identity which embodies the Mongol's love for their native language and culture. Indigenous Mongolian musical rhythms are often patterned after the rhythm of a running horse. Such rhythms represent one of the major ethnic features of Mongolian music, and can be found throughout this piece. "Zeregleent Gobi" was written for the Inner Mongolian Youth Chorus Troupe and "Bless Us, O God" is an a cappella setting of a Mongolian prayer.

Various Arrangers : Native American Songs

Review: "Eagle Hill" - Young voices will soar like the eagle in this accessible work for treble choir. The text was shaped from a ritual song of the Pawnee nation which revered the eagle for its strength and wisdom. Students from the commissioning choir wrote poetry, which the composer incorporated into this setting. "Songs of the Earth" - This choral pairs two venerable Native American songs: a Hopi chant and a traditional Arapaho Native song. With recorders and percussion, the songs are blended together to form a partner song at the conclusion of the piece. A striking addition to your concert! "Canoe Song" - A favorite North American tune is creatively arranged incorporating unison and 2-part harmony, round and partner-style singing with original music. A treasure chest of teaching and learning that includes optional percussion instruments and a text that reflects the Native American philosophy of reverence for the earth. "Shoshone Love Song" - This tender setting of a Native American poem features extended legato phrasing and delicate musicality. The simple piano accompaniment supports the expressive vocal textures. "Grandfather, Great Spirit" - With a text based on a Sioux Nations prayer, the composer has this to say, For native peoples, the spirits of nature and the earth are a strong presence, as are the spirits of their ancestors and the living traditions of their culture. Various Arrangers : Native American Songs for Mixed Voices

Review: "Come on the Trail of Song" - Memley celebrates the Native American culture with an exquisite triptych of poems and song called Three Native American Settings. The original music is consumed with the sounds of the Native American spirit in all three selections. Although they can be performed separately, the set provides a reverent tribute to a beautiful culture. "Shoshone Love Song" - This tender setting of a Native American poem features extended legato phrasing and delicate musicality. The simple piano accompaniment supports the expressive vocal textures. Ideal for concert or festival programming! "Onokenoga" (or Lake of the Gods to the Mohawk First Nation people) depicts an ancient Mohawk legend of tragic romance. So deep was the connection between these two young lovers, legend has it that the spirit of the young girl wanders the shores to this day searching for her lost mate. "Waniska" - The Cree Indians from the North American continent have a delightful morning song that has been artfully arranged by Brian Tate. Beginning with bird sounds the melody line is first presented by the sopranos. A pedal point is set by the tenors and basses as the altos take their turn with the tune. As with so many Tate arrangements, staging is easily a part of the presentation, as the simple lines cross and lift one another. Some suggestions are provided but each group will find their own path. "Spirit of the Winding Water (A Navajo Prayer)" Native American wisdom and philosophy provide rich awareness of finding the sacred in all things. For this new work, musical phrases and rhythms are assembled from Native American chants and mixed with new music filled with this awareness. Native American instruments are suggested with more traditional instruments offered when these are not available.

"Ning Wendete" is a traditional folk song from Kenya and is a conversation between a man and a woman. "I love you, but you do not love me. How is that? If you do not love me, you had better tell me so." Dynamic contrast, percussion and a wide range of layered vocal textures make this an appealing concert choice. "The Coca Cola Song" is a playful contemporary African folksong and is a lot of fun to perform with layered vocal parts, African percussion, and humorous references to the choir members singing. Celebrative and highly rhythmic, "African Noel" shines with energy and excitment. Contrasting dynamics and optional percussion make this one a real creative and refreshing Christmas selection. Beautiful in its simplicity, your choir will have fun with this one!

Various Arrangers : African Folk Songs

Review: The first two South African Folk Songs are in Shangani. The first seems to be in recognition of the arrival of the first white settlers off the west coast of Africa, ostensibly in the 17th century. The second, Tulan, Nimamele!, speaks for itself. They are both best done in a strong, boisterous fashion. Freedom Come is The closing movement of Bandari: Inside These Walls, a five-movement work encompassing a variety of African styles and combining Swahili and English texts. Freedom Come is written in the style of a South African freedom song; it creates an atmosphere in which hope can increase, healing can occur, and connections to our common humanity can be strengthened.

Review: "Nukapianguaq" (pronounced Nuhk-ah-pee-ang-guaq) attempts to present Inuit music in a choral setting that remains as faithful as possible to the aesthetics of the original tradition. Inuit chants are usually reflective in nature and spiritual in intent. "On The Rooms" - An audience need not be familiar with the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's easternmost province, to get the sense that an epic story is unfolding before them. Based on the maritime heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, this modern folk song creates an atmosphere of sea air and hard work. The arrangement of this beautiful Indian song "Land of the Silver Birch" was made by the Finnish music educator Pentti Paalanen in the 1970s for his high school choir in the town of Joensuu. Since all three verses are set to the same music, the necessary contrasts must come from a careful consideration of the text. These contrasts, or variations, need not be very great, however, as a certain monotony and mystery belongs to the character of this song. This Canadian Folksong "Petty Harbour Bait Skiff" describes the tragic sinking of a Bait Skiff near Petty Harbour in 1852, losing all but one of the crew.

Songlist: On The Rooms, Land of the Silver Birch, Nukapianguaq, Petty Harbour Bait Skiff, Oolichan

Various Arrangers : Eastern European Folk Songs

Review: Lajos Bardos' Hungarian composition, 'Erik A Som,' has easy melodies and harmonies, the challenge comes with the text, as the Hungarian language is a bit more difficult, than others, to learn. Hungarian words are always accented on the first syllable. There are no diphthongs; if two vowels appear together, each is distinctly pronounced. A helpful guide to learn how to speak the text is included. 'Chindia,' is perhaps Pascanu's most famous composition. It is based on an instrumental Romanian folk dance by the same name. 'Chindian' besides being the name of a folk dance, refers both to the time of day just before the sun sets and to the place in the sky where the sun goes down. The dance is perfomed by both men and women in a closed circle, the dancer's arms on each other's shoulders. A vigorous dance, it uses small steps, and may include amusing, somewhat athletic stunts. This wordless piece is very exciting to sing! 'Sednalo e Djore dos' is based on a very famous Bulgarian folk tune that has circulated in the oral tradition of Bulgarian folk singers for many years. It is characterized by its short and repetitive melodic line flavored with a lot of humorous energy. In this arrangement, the arranger has paraphrased the melody slightly thus allowing it to become a good foundation for harmonic variations. Ivan Hrusovsky's 'Rytmus' has excellent, fun rhythms along with great (but relatively simple) harmonies. The latin text moves niceley with the melodies.

Songlist: Rytmus, Sednalo e Djore dos, Chindia, Erik A Som (The Cherries Ripen)

Various Arrangers : Hebrew Songs

Review: Cantor Rena Shapiro's take on the Israeli classic "Eili, Eili" is a fantastic a cappella addition to any repertoire. The setting's savvy utilization of just three voices gives it lots of mileage with a beginning choir but provides plenty for an advanced one to work with in terms of expression and nuance. The piece includes sections in both Hebrew and English. The flowing, contrapuntal movement in Cantor Davidson's setting of Psalm 121 ("A song of ascents...") is at once modern and madrigal, and provides options for singing in English, Hebrew, or both. The song S'Vivon depicts the Hanukkah dreydl, a small top with four sides. Each side of the dreydl contains one of the four Hebrew initials of the phrase, "(A) Great Miracle Happened There."

Various Arrangers : Latin Accents

Review: "Casita de Campo" is one of the most popular love songs from the Dominican Republic. It describes a modest, and yet beautiful, little rural house in the Cibao region where the composer evokes the consummation of a passionate and virginal love. It is a "cancion-bolero," a typical Caribbean romantic song form in quadruple meter, slow-paced, which is also a centerpiece of serenades. "Chanflin" is a typical Dominican merengue in its melody and form. Chanflin is a young woman, very good looking. The merengue section refers to a "neighborhood gossip." The jaleo section refers to Chanflin dressing in a finicky manner. "La Lluvia" is a folk melody from Ecuador traditionally played on the siku - the double row of panpipes that have been used in the high Andes for over a thousand years. With percussion. "Son de Camaguey" is a Cuban folk song from which the composer takes the refrain and then frames it with kaleidoscopic patters of ostinati inspired by the song, and by Afro-Cuban music in general. "O Sapo" - In this irresistible Brazilian song setting, vocal lines imitate percussion patterns to create a truly infectious groove. Newly arranged for SSATB chorus. With optional percussion.

Various Arrangers : Men's Folk Songs

Review: Written for the Harvard Glee Club, this arrangement of 'Skye Boat Song' is men's choral singing at its best! Jameson Marvin sets this beautiful Scottish folksong combining both the jauntiness of a sailor's air and the sensitivity of a lullaby. From the Mark Foster catalog, 'What Wondrous Love Is This' is another well-loved folk hymn arrangement from J. Harold Moyer. Written for the Kansas Mennonite Men's Chorus, Moyer has taken a beautiful folk hymn and crafted it into an exquisite choral anthem. Using the modal folk melody, he has embellished the harmony with broad, open chords and scalar movement, giving the piece a chant-like quality. The a cappella arrangement of 'Home on the Range' bursts with colorful harmonies and textures which expertly interpret the text. Described by some as a "perfect melody," this American standard gives your ensemble a chance to show off their impeccable tuning and blending abilities for concert, contest, or festival. Features unison phrases, brief solo sections, and lush, unexpected harmonies. A traditional Irish folksong, 'The Minstrel Boy,' is a fun and exciting four part men's arrangement. The baritone solo in the middle of the piece is definitely noteworthy! 'Tenting On the Old Campground' is known as the most popular 'melancholy song' of the Cival War. It was written in 1862 by a concert ballad singer from New Hampshire wh was deferred from army service because of 'feebleness of constitution.' But he did sing it for Union troops in the field. The song appealed to soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This would be a great addition to your concert! 'Let's Drink!' is a fun three part men's piece that can be sung during your concert or even at the after-party!

Various Arrangers : Russian Folk Songs

Review: "Kalinka" is about a young man sitting under a red berry bush (Kalinka), singing of his feelings for his sweetheart. The expressiveness of the song is achieved through the contrast between a lively and rhythmic chorus and the more legato and subdued verses. The Russian folk song "One Day By The River A Young Cossack Roamed" is transcribed and arranged here based on a version sung by Olga and Kristina Bashirin in Irkutsk, Russia, in July of 1993. Includes both English and Russian text with pronunciation guide for the Russian. "The Birch Tree" Arranged by Stanislav Gribkov, the artistic director and chief conductor of the St. Petersburg TV and Radio Choir, this intricate setting sounds harder than it is.

Review: Norway is a country rich in folk tradition, and in these piece, elements of folk dance and instrumental music are clearly represented. These tunes are fun, singable, and would fit perfectly on a program of multicultural music, or as a stand-alone on a concert of a more diverse nature. Complete IPA guide included. "The text exists merely to give form to the music and is meaningless," says Finnish composer Mantyjarvi, whose "El Hambo" in 1999 was an instant success with American high school choirs. In "Pseudo-Yoik" he takes a humorous look at the stereotype of the Lapland folk music. Fun stuff!

Various Arrangers : Sea Shanties

Review: Add a breath of salty sea air to your repertoire with one of these traditional sea chanties. Lots of fun to sing and with performance notes. Originally from England, where "All for Me Grog" was heard in music halls as well as on ships, the shanty was sung while working the capstan and the halyard. Swedish composer and conductor, Robert Sund wrote this playful arrangement of "What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor?" leaving ample room for both women and men to excel in this well-known sea chantey. The tongue-twisting text brings this arrangement to an impressive ending!

Various Arrangers : Sea Songs for Male Voices

Review: Sea shanties are an early tradition in a cappella music and are great fun to sing. Here we offer a selection of classics for male voices. The English sea shanty "All For Me Grog", already a success in SATB and 3-Part Mixed voicings, is now available for men's chorus, just the way it would have been heard originally when sung by sailors as they pulled long heavy ropes on early Navy vessels. Noted arranger Vijay Singh brings us three classics that will provide excellent programming materials for male quartets, ensembles and choirs. "Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her" is a playful arrangement in which the ensemble encourages one of its own (Johnny) to bid farewell to his female shore leave companion. Encourage the singers to imagine they are loading the ship for departure and watching with amusement as young Johnny tries to bid his lady farewell. 'Bangidero" is derived from a traditional sea chantey in which a crew sings of admiration for its captain and his tales of shore leave opportunities in South America. "Her Bright Smile", based on the plaintive words of an anonymous sailor poem, details the sailor's loneliness and longing for his ladylove. Marshall Bartholomew, arranger for much of the Yale Glee Club repertoire, does a fine job with the traditional "What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor?".

Various Arrangers : Songs of Africa for Male Voices

Review: "Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain" - The famed South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo led by Joseph Shabalala creates moments of transformative beauty with their unique sound and vivid imagery. Choirs will enjoy recreating this evocative work. "Harambee" - In Kenya, the Swahili word harambee has multiple meaning. When a group of people gather to complete a difficult physical task, they often say, "one, two, thre ... harambee!!" In this context the words means: "let's go, let's get it done." A special gathering to raise money for building a church or school is also called a harambee. These gatherings often feature long speeches, music and dancing. In the context of this composition, harambee means unity - working together. In a time of increased multi-cultural awareness, Bwana Awabariki offers an ideal piece of African culture for both churches and schools. The song emphasizes rhythm, blend, and African-style vocalism with broad, open chords and the familiar low, low bass part. This warm a cappella blessing would be especially effective with added percussion. This a cappella setting of a traditional South African praise song "Gabi, Gabi" just bursts with joyful energy. Dynamic contrast, percussion and a wide range of layered vocal textures make this an appealing concert choice.

Various Arrangers : World Folk Songs for Treble Voices

Review: Several variants of the famous English folk ballad "Barb'ry Ellen" are incorporated into this evocative setting for women's voices. First performed by the Varsity Women's Choir of Appleton North High School, James Heiks, conductor. "Ya Faraoule" is a combination of Christian Lebanese songs of romantic longing with Muslim Egyptian songs of romantic joy. There are plenty of sensuous, serpentine Middle Eastern lines for singers. The gentle and expressive arrangement of "Danny Boy" works equally well highlighting a solo or small ensemble. A music that celebrates the Australian continent and its peoples. "Kungala" is a typically energetic and inventive piece, using gesture and stage movement as well as vocalisation to create an atmosphere of energy and joy. "Queen Jane" - A slow melody of breathtaking beauty of an old ballad on Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII. Lots of opportunity for storytelling - the sopranos are Jane, 2nd sopranos the Narrator and the altos are Henry. Moving and sad.
