Various Artists : The Doo Wop Sound

Review: This beautifully-done DVD is like a History Channel documentary on the Doo-Wop phenomenon of the 1950s and 60s, starting with its streetcorner roots in cities like NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore and SF, and progressing into the recording and performance mainstream of American culture. Along the way we hear fascinating interviews with people like Ronnie (I) Italiano, DJs Don K. King and Bobby Jay, Louis Lymon (Frankie's Brother and a star in his own right), Pookie Hudson of the Spaniels (who wrote "Goodnight, Sweetheart" to his first love, not to write a hit), Earl "Speedo" Carroll of the Cadillacs, and Arlene Smith of the Chantels (who talks about being 12 years old when they scored their first hit with "Maybe"). We hear about and see vintage footage of the first Doo-Wop sex symbol, Sonny Till, The Ravens singing what arguably is the first Doo-Wop song, "Count Every Star," and the 1940s roots groups, The Deep River Boys, the butter-smooth Mills Bros. and SF's Golden Gate Quartet. We hear why and how a cappella, nonsense syllables and silly lyrics were used by poor young singers to create a full sound and "get noticed," the bombshell effect on the recording industry of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" ... I could rave on and on here, but I'll just give you the Chapter headings to give you a taste of what's here: "The Early Years," "Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers," "Romance and Innocence," "The Urban Streets," "The Girl Groups," "The Tour Bus" (which goes into the racism the mostly Northern groups encountered in the South), "The Business of Doo-Wop," "The Cadillacs" and "The End of An Era." Lots of great vintage footage here, of singers, cities, recording studios, live performances with star-studded playbills in lights-this is a sumptuous feast for the a cappella, R&B and pop music fan, as well as anyone who is interested in the amazing cultural history of the 50s and 60s. Enough said--"The Doo-Wop Sound" is a winner from beginning to end!

Songlist: The Early Years, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Romance and Innocence, The Urban Streets, The Girl Groups, The Tour Bus, The Business of Doo Wop, The Cadillacs, The End of an Era

Adele : Songs for Treble Voices

Review: Adele is currently the most acclaimed female singer of the era and her songs are hits worldwide. Have your choir singing the latest hit music. Adele returned to the pop charts in spectacular style, breaking records and achieving tremendous commercial success. This soulful piano ballad evokes themes of nostalgia and reflection for a wonderful choral showcase for choirs of all ages and levels. From her second album 21 and also performed by Gwyneth Paltrow on Glee "Turning Tables" has a piano accompaniment that is almost classical in approach, the reflective vocals express emotion of deep melancholy tinged with hopefulness. "Someone Like You" opens with a single voice on the opening verse, the vocal textures gradually build into a full-voiced chorus that expresses the emotional message of the song. Ideal for all types of choral ensembles! "Rolling in the Deep" can be performed a cappella, as in the GLEE version, or with the bluesy, soulful accompaniment. The all-girl Troubletones sing a phenomenal mash-up of two Adele hits in Season Three. Alternating between the aggressive "Rumour Has It" and a more accepting "Someone Like You," this epic pairing offers solo opportunities and powerful vocal backups. A fantastic SSA feature!

Deke Sharon : Men's Popular Jazz Vol 2

Review: "Cecilia" - This playful Simon and Garfunkle standard is perfect for a cappella with the tenors sharing the original's harmony. Bass and bari weave counter melodies and driving background parts built entirely around the lyrics. No vocal percussion necessary - lots of rhythmic intensity built into the background parts. One of the most popular and requested male arrangements originally sung by the Beelzebubs of Tufts University. "I Can't Tell You Why" - A lush, delicately textured rendering of the Eagles classic. A high tenor solo floats above a sextet of light overlapping lines and a rich bass line, forming a warm bed of sound not unlike a synthesizer or string section. Perfect for a talented octet, or a male chorus. "I Only Have Eyes for You" - This 60's classic made famous by the Flamingos, and then later recorded by Art Garfunkle, is one of the best loved doo-wop tunes of all time. This version maintains the doo-wop styling during the verse and shifts into a rich, close harmony ballad in the chorus. "Rock The Boat" - One of the most infectiously catchy pop/R & B songs to come out of the 70's (made popular by "The Hues Corporation"), this arrangement will make your singers want to get up and dance. Very melodic background lines, plenty of syncopation. Vocal percussion optional.
