Male Contemporary A Cappella Groups

Contemporary a cappella is a broad term, and some contemporary groups are like a good recipe - a pinch of this (rock), a dash of that (pop), just a little shake of that (doo-wop), a teaspoon of this (R&B), a dollop of something spicy (jazz), mix it up in the blender for three minutes, and voila - a contemporary a cappella group! Whether your taste is a little more old-fashioned, four voices alone singing old favorites, or you like the hard-hitting, radio-ready sound of a vocal band doing original tunes, we've got the men's groups doing that work, and particularly, men's groups doing that work well.

Rockapella

Gleefully, they are NOT your childhood Rockapella. Rather they've become one of the world's most sophisticated and lasting pop vocal groups. With the wild success of the TV smash "Glee" and a cappella groups reigning in the Corner of Cool on college campuses, there is clearly a hunger for exciting live vocal performance. A single concert opens a window on practically the whole history of vocal music from vintage Mills Brothers through jazz and rock to current Hip Hop.

The little miracle that keeps the crowds coming back year after year and constantly draws new fans is Rockapella's astonishing full-band sound. A sound that seems to be impossible coming from just five guys with microphones. No instruments, no tracks, no mirrors - and their hands never leave their wrists. "We're making every bit as much music as the whole 'Glee' chorus - but with only five guys," says Rockapella's human beat-box Jeff Thacher.

Six Appeal

Is Six Appeal a comedy group, a vocal ensemble, or a rock band? Audiences have been trying to answer that question for years. Swearing off instruments, Six Appeal uses a cappella singing to span decades of classic oldies, current chart toppers, and catchy original tunes. Featuring vocal dexterity and adventurous song selection, the group explores all genres with a far-reaching repertoire that will surprise and captivate audiences regardless of the setting. Despite their cheeky group name, the antics of these six young gentlemen provide a good natured atmosphere for their electrifying performance. A Six Appeal show will split your sides, feed your musical sweet tooth, and leave you wondering how in the world they pulled it off just with voices.

Straight No Chaser

The group originally came together in the fall of 1996 at IU, basically as "10 guys who happened to be good friends who also liked to sing." Choosing the members carefully for personality as well as vocal talent - Stine, Mechling, Jerome Collins, David Roberts and Walter Chase remain from the original lineup -- SNC set itself apart from other a cappella groups with its contemporary repertoire and dynamic approach, quickly headlining concerts both in Bloomington and on road dates. SNC recorded three independent albums, and John Mellencamp even invited the group to his home for a private performance.

When the founders began graduating in 1999 and went on to jobs mostly outside of music, they chose replacements and established SNC as an ongoing group on campus with future generations of ambitious IU undergrads. More than 50 members have passed through the group's ranks so far.

Since their success on The Sing-Off, Street Corner Symphony has made their mark on the music world, recording albums, providing clinics for schools, giving benefits for cancer, performing across the country and around the world, and even working with major artists including Ben Folds, Alison Krauss, and Take 6's Claude McKnight.

Vocal Sampling

Vocal Sampling may sound like a full salsa band - but in reality their unique sound is created by a six piece all-male Cuban a-capella group. With minimum technology, they use only their voices, their cupped hands and their own bodies to create a full range of timbres and textures. All the instruments of the Latin Orchestra - percussion, horns, keyboard, bass - are vocally reproduced with astonishing accuracy for their hugely entertaining set of classic boleros, rumbas, and salsa, as wells as more contemporary compositions.

Largely based on traditional Cuban music but also heavily influenced by modern salsa and jazz, Vocal Sampling perform a variety of original compositions as well as new arrangements of classic tunes. The group's virtuoso singing and technical ability combined with their dynamic stage presence guarantees an exuberant and colourful evening. .

Vocal Six

Vocal Six are a group of six men with excellent vocal powers who love to sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments - i.e. an a cappella sextet. They consider Skåne (south of Sweden) their basecamp. From there they travel all over the country, crossing bridges and borders to the outside of the country, to let people enjoy the euphony of their voices.

Vocal Six have been on the right track(s) for some time now. A few of them may be found in any average Swedish record collection. So far they have recorded six CDs, six sets of vocal items that guarantee musical satisfaction for nearly everyone.

Vocaldente

The press is unanimous: vocaldente's "singing technique is professional", their "verve is phenomenal", and they're "sparkling with imagination". Critics say they offer a "high level in singing performance", with their "funny spoken interludes" and "imaginative, passionate choreography" - and that they're known for the "professionalism in their performance": Onstage they're "fitting and harmonic", "witty and fresh", "charming and professional" ...simply "harmonic, funny and good with a refreshing naturalness."

But vocaldente have also impressed on the international stage, convincing jurors from all areas of vocal and a cappella music, from classical style to voice pop, such as John Potter (former The Hilliard Ensemble member), Ward Swingle (founder of The Swingle Singers) and Anders Jalkeus (The Real Group). The quintet have prevailed at the biggest and most significant national and international vocal and a cappella competitions in Asia, Europe and the United States.

Who's Your Daddy

"Who's Your Daddy!": A Playlist For Today's Rock & Roll Fathers

For better or worse, we've come a long way from the days when rock & roll was an entirely pure form of generational rebellion. Even in my lifetime, I've seen fathers go from older dudes who yelled, "Turn that racket down!" to roving bands of aging dads in jeans and t-shirts who are more likely to ask the kids if they can sit in and jam with their emo bands. Where I live, when a dad tells you that he's taking his kid hunting, he generally means record hunting at Amoeba Music.
