In 1897, W. Augustus Barratt (1873-1947) set to music a poem by Gratiana Chanter (1857-1934). In three brief verses, it tells the familiar tale of a beautiful lady whose fastidious nature leaves her regretful and alone, once she has rejected all offers of love. Dr. William J. Bullock's arrangement brings the story-song to life and maintains a 19th century flavor. It is an excellent choice for high school, college and community choirs. |
