The TTBB version of 'Feedom Come' is the closing movement of 'Bandari: Inside These Walls,' a five moevement work encompassing a variety of African styles and combining Swahili and English text, and is written in the style of a South African freedom song. The piece begins a cappella; the conga drum is added after the first verse to create new energy and to delineate subtle rhythmic changes, particularly during the ending which alternates between 3/2 and 5/8. 'Back to Ethiopia' bears numerous attributes associated with the African-American spiritual, and might thus be effectively treated as a Jamaican equivalent. The text plaintively longs for a homeland; the 'verses' in the verse-and-refrain structure are meley repetitions of a single line of text; and the melody suggests very slow harmonic rhythm. The appeal of this tune lies in its ability to strike the ear as being both astonishingly simple and proundly moving. The moving folk song 'Kpanlongo' should be sung with a somewhat nasal and straight tone with strong accents on each syllable to clearly define the rhythm. This piece comes along with a very helpful pronunciation guide. The Pennsylvania Dutch folk song, 'Johnny Scmoker' is a fun song indeed. Through its seven verses, Johnny describes and accumulates all the instruments he can play. Simple choreography along with the accelerandos (to as fast as possible) give this piece its trademark - your choir and audience are sure to enjoy. The Jamaican folk song 'Hol' You Han'' is quite authentic and will be exciting for your choir to tackle, it even incorporates vocal/body percussion! An opotional piano part is included for this piece.

The baritone solo in the middle of the piece is definitely noteworthy! 'Tenting On the Old Campground' is known as the most popular 'melancholy song' of the Cival War. It was written in 1862 by a concert ballad singer from New Hampshire wh was deferred from army service because of 'feebleness of constitution.' But he did sing it for Union troops in the field. The song appealed to soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This would be a great addition to your concert! 'Let's Drink!' is a fun three part men's piece that can be sung during your concert or even at the after-party!

Doo wop a cappella has influenced so much of today's sound and here we present some cool arrangements of some of the all-time classics. Here is Ed Lojeski rendition of The Nylons hit "Silhouettes" which has an irresistible energy and drive that make this an audience favorite! "Under The Boardwalk", the 1964 classic hit by the Drifters, should be in every group's repertoire as should the 1962 Gene Chandler hit "Duke of Earl". Would you believe the '50s hit "Book of Love" was inspired by a toothpaste commercial? This is a nice, simple treatment of the Van Morrison favorite "Moondance". A solo in the second tenor range is true to the melody with some interesting chord subsititutions in the harmony parts. Beginning with a duet between solo and bass, there is plenty of room for some subtle, improvised vocal percussion from the other two voices. A bass part that doesn't get too low makes this a great choice for a young male quartet. An easy, yet effective arrangement of the all time Rodgers and Hart ballad "You Are Too Beautiful", that gives your men's section a chance to really shine! Here's a snappy, toe-tapping rendition of " Let's Get Away From It All". It starts right in on the chorus and cruises along to a big ending. Straight-ahead, very fun to sing, and makes a great show opener. "I've Got A Crush On You" starts with a rubato introduction into a slow-ish swing groove for the chorus. The verse is in the middle and is sung rubato with "oo's" behind the lead. Back to tempo second time around with a half-step modulation into the last'A' with a ritard into the ending. TTBB

A very happy version of "Sunday" inspired by Sinatra's famous recording. The bass leads in with everyone on words right off the bat. There are fun syncopations and falls in the chorus with a half-step modulation with no pivot chord (a sort of key 'slam'). Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week quoted in the tag. This is a very fun arrangmenet. "Without A Song" What more can we say? A beautiful song, a beautiful arrangement. 'Over the Raininbow' is a simple, yet beautiful harmonization of the classic tune. 'You Are Too Beautiful' is an easy, yet effective arrangement of this all time Rodgers and Hart ballad, that gives your men's section a chance to really shine!

Bob Martin: Men's Standards 2

Blue And Sentimental" is a slow grooving version of this Basie classic. It starts out right on the chorus with everyone on words. "Lillette" is a somewhat rare tune performed by the Nat Cole trio in his early days. It starts out with a rubato verse going into a snappy chorus with tons of fun syncopated rhythms that keep things moving. Stop time kicks in the tag send this one off with a bang.

The arrangement of 'Bye, Bye, Blackbird' is a rubato ballad version of this pretty, old song. There is some re-harmonizaton, but overall the chords remain pretty square. You will find much opportunity to interpret phrasing as you like. The infectious original chart, 'Love Will Find a Way' starts out with a bed of close harmonies that explodes into a funk groove, highlighting a tenor solo. After the ensemble is featured in the bridge, the arrangement moves up a whole step. There is plenty of room for soloing as the tune moves through the chorus and ends with a thick-textured finish. The perfect showcase for your men. The 8-part arrangement of 'Eleanor Rigby' challenges the singer without detracting from the great lyrics. The first two verses can be baritone solos or the entire baritone section in unison. The third verse incorporates some unison and some unusual chord substitutions. The tenor 1 part is mostly in the falsetto range. The tenor 2 part usually falls in the head voice range and is all harmony. Works well as a showcase piece or closer for a male group with strong part-singing skills.

Deke Sharon: Men's Popular Jazz

In "Heartache Tonight" rock & roll, country, and streetcorner sensibilities combine in this fun, up tempo of the Eagles classic. Complete with handclaps and footstomps, this arrangement features a high tenor solo and lots of moving harmony, making it a perfect closing song or encore. "Only You (and You Alone)" is a streetcorner ballad made famous by The Platters is the perfect showcase for a male quartet that's looking for a fun doo-wop piece. The solo is in the first tenor, and crosses into falsetto frequently, allowing for a powerhouse vocal showcase, and the other three parts have fun with the lyrics. Street corner meets close harmony in this rendering of Paul Simon's ode to days-gone-by " Still Crazy After All These Years". Perfect for graduations and retrospective events. Ubi Caritas Jung-ga-lye-ya Goin' Home TTBB

'Ubi Caritas' is a setting of the second verse of the beautiful Maundy Thursday text. The work's character and melodic structure is strongly based on chant and, as a result, requires a sensitive approach to subtle tempo changes, text and phrasing. After several climactic sections, the piece ends very simply and pognantly with a request for peace and understanding. 'Jing-ga-lye-ya' was an instant success for Chor Leoni Men's Choir. Using nonsense words, it is rhythmic and upbeat, and uses cyclical repetition in the parts creating an incredibly catchy groove! Loomer's arrangement of 'Goin Home,' the folksong/principal theme from Dvorak's New World Symphony with baritone solo, was written for Chor Leoni and calls for low D flats from the basses... but you do have their permission to change keys!

'Ave, Maris Stella' is a favorite Nova Scotia Latin canticle witha simple harmonic arrangement. Included is a solo for tenor or unison tenor section. 'Loch Lomond' begins witha tenor or baritone solo, and develops into a rousing rhythmic chorus which drives to the end of the piece. in between are richly textured choral verses.
