The TTBB version of 'Feedom Come' is the closing movement of 'Bandari: Inside These Walls,' a five moevement work encompassing a variety of African styles and combining Swahili and English text, and is written in the style of a South African freedom song. The piece begins a cappella; the conga drum is added after the first verse to create new energy and to delineate subtle rhythmic changes, particularly during the ending which alternates between 3/2 and 5/8. 'Back to Ethiopia' bears numerous attributes associated with the African-American spiritual, and might thus be effectively treated as a Jamaican equivalent. The text plaintively longs for a homeland; the 'verses' in the verse-and-refrain structure are meley repetitions of a single line of text; and the melody suggests very slow harmonic rhythm. The appeal of this tune lies in its ability to strike the ear as being both astonishingly simple and proundly moving. The moving folk song 'Kpanlongo' should be sung with a somewhat nasal and straight tone with strong accents on each syllable to clearly define the rhythm. This piece comes along with a very helpful pronunciation guide. The Pennsylvania Dutch folk song, 'Johnny Scmoker' is a fun song indeed. Through its seven verses, Johnny describes and accumulates all the instruments he can play. Simple choreography along with the accelerandos (to as fast as possible) give this piece its trademark - your choir and audience are sure to enjoy. The Jamaican folk song 'Hol' You Han'' is quite authentic and will be exciting for your choir to tackle, it even incorporates vocal/body percussion! Sea shanties are an early tradition in a cappella music and are great fun to sing. Here we offer a selection of classics for male voices. “The Sailor’s Song” is an energetic and appealing a cappella sea chantey for Tenor Bass choirs that will be fun to rehearse and a showstopper in performance! Great for building skills and camaraderie! Noted arranger Vijay Singh brings us three classics that will provide excellent programming materials for male quartets, ensembles and choirs. "Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her" is a playful arrangement in which the ensemble encourages one of its own (Johnny) to bid farewell to his female shore leave companion. Encourage the singers to imagine they are loading the ship for departure and watching with amusement as young Johnny tries to bid his lady farewell. 'Bangidero" is derived from a traditional sea chantey in which a crew sings of admiration for its captain and his tales of shore leave opportunities in South America. "Her Bright Smile", based on the plaintive words of an anonymous sailor poem, details the sailor's loneliness and longing for his ladylove. Marshall Bartholomew, arranger for much of the Yale Glee Club repertoire, does a fine job with the traditional “What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor?”.

This is a nice, simple treatment of the Van Morrison favorite "Moondance". A solo in the second tenor range is true to the melody with some interesting chord subsititutions in the harmony parts. Beginning with a duet between solo and bass, there is plenty of room for some subtle, improvised vocal percussion from the other two voices. A bass part that doesn't get too low makes this a great choice for a young male quartet. An easy, yet effective arrangement of the all time Rodgers and Hart ballad "You Are Too Beautiful", that gives your men's section a chance to really shine! Here's a snappy, toe-tapping rendition of " Let's Get Away From It All". It starts right in on the chorus and cruises along to a big ending. Straight-ahead, very fun to sing, and makes a great show opener. "I've Got A Crush On You" starts with a rubato introduction into a slow-ish swing groove for the chorus. The verse is in the middle and is sung rubato with "oo's" behind the lead. Back to tempo second time around with a half-step modulation into the last'A' with a ritard into the ending. TTBB

A very happy version of "Sunday" inspired by Sinatra's famous recording. The bass leads in with everyone on words right off the bat. There are fun syncopations and falls in the chorus with a half-step modulation with no pivot chord (a sort of key 'slam'). Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week quoted in the tag. This is a very fun arrangmenet. "Without A Song" What more can we say? A beautiful song, a beautiful arrangement. 'Over the Raininbow' is a simple, yet beautiful harmonization of the classic tune. 'You Are Too Beautiful' is an easy, yet effective arrangement of this all time Rodgers and Hart ballad, that gives your men's section a chance to really shine!

Bob Martin: Men's Standards 2

Blue And Sentimental" is a slow grooving version of this Basie classic. It starts out right on the chorus with everyone on words. "Lillette" is a somewhat rare tune performed by the Nat Cole trio in his early days. It starts out with a rubato verse going into a snappy chorus with tons of fun syncopated rhythms that keep things moving. Stop time kicks in the tag send this one off with a bang.

The arrangement of 'Bye, Bye, Blackbird' is a rubato ballad version of this pretty, old song. There is some re-harmonizaton, but overall the chords remain pretty square. You will find much opportunity to interpret phrasing as you like. The infectious original chart, 'Love Will Find a Way' starts out with a bed of close harmonies that explodes into a funk groove, highlighting a tenor solo. After the ensemble is featured in the bridge, the arrangement moves up a whole step. There is plenty of room for soloing as the tune moves through the chorus and ends with a thick-textured finish. The perfect showcase for your men. The 8-part arrangement of 'Eleanor Rigby' challenges the singer without detracting from the great lyrics. The first two verses can be baritone solos or the entire baritone section in unison. The third verse incorporates some unison and some unusual chord substitutions. The tenor 1 part is mostly in the falsetto range. The tenor 2 part usually falls in the head voice range and is all harmony. Works well as a showcase piece or closer for a male group with strong part-singing skills.

Deke Sharon: Men's Popular Jazz

In "Heartache Tonight" rock & roll, country, and streetcorner sensibilities combine in this fun, up tempo of the Eagles classic. Complete with handclaps and footstomps, this arrangement features a high tenor solo and lots of moving harmony, making it a perfect closing song or encore. "Only You (and You Alone)" is a streetcorner ballad made famous by The Platters is the perfect showcase for a male quartet that's looking for a fun doo-wop piece. The solo is in the first tenor, and crosses into falsetto frequently, allowing for a powerhouse vocal showcase, and the other three parts have fun with the lyrics. Street corner meets close harmony in this rendering of Paul Simon's ode to days-gone-by " Still Crazy After All These Years". Perfect for graduations and retrospective events. The tenor solo can be shared or split between several singers. Light vocal percussion is optional. First a hit for Maurice Chevalier, then Louis Prima, then David Lee Roth, the catchy, flirtatious songs, 'Just A Gigalo/I Ain't Got Nobody' have topped the charts for three generations. Tuneful, playful background parts support a tenor or Baritone solo (which can be shared): send your soloist into the audience and you'll have a huge crowd pleaser.

Care has been taken to preserve the authenticity of the language in this arrangement, with the help of a ipa chart in the performance notes of this chart. With an energetic, strong opening and a more lyric, gentle section in the middle, 'Alleluia' provides an overall sense of the joy we experience while praising god. 'Let the Bullgine Tun,' a vigorous, humorous, traditional sea chantey is guaranteed to delight both singers and audiences.

Chor Leoni: A Cappella Arrangements Vol 1

Ubi Caritas Jung-ga-lye-ya Goin' Home TTBB a cappella

'Ubi Caritas' is a setting of the second verse of the beautiful Maundy Thursday text. The work's character and melodic structure is strongly based on chant and, as a result, requires a sensitive approach to subtle tempo changes, text and phrasing. After several climactic sections, the piece ends very simply and pognantly with a request for peace and understanding. 'Jing-ga-lye-ya' was an instant success for Chor Leoni Men's Choir. Using nonsense words, it is rhythmic and upbeat, and uses cyclical repetition in the parts creating an incredibly catchy groove! Loomer's arrangement of 'Goin Home,' the folksong/principal theme from Dvorak's New World Symphony with baritone solo, was written for Chor Leoni and calls for low D flats from the basses... but you do have their permission to change keys!

Stan Rogers, Canada's folk music hero speaks to all of us through his words and music. 'Fogarty's Cove' is faithful to Stan's musical Style and it's great to sing! 'Ave, Maris Stella' is a favorite Nova Scotia Latin canticle witha simple harmonic arrangement. Included is a solo for tenor or unison tenor section. 'Loch Lomond' begins witha tenor or baritone solo, and develops into a rousing rhythmic chorus which drives to the end of the piece. in between are richly textured choral verses.

Irving Fine: McCord's Menagerie

Jerboa Vultur Gryphus Clam Mole TBB a cappella

Subtitled "Four Vivariations", Irving Fine's McCord's Menagerie, are settings of humorous poems by David McCord. With the bumbling "loo's" accompanying the tenor melody, Fine's setting of Vultur Gryphus implies a harmless creature. Instead of the movie western's ominous bird associated with death, Fine's animal seems too lazy and stupid to get his own food! Jerboa, classified as the genus jaculus jaculus, is as active and scary in Fine's world as Vultur Gryphus is laid back and friendly. Fine agrees with those to whom a darting (the translation of the Latin jaculus) small rodent is sinister and creepy, attributes he conveys through abrupt entrances and minor tonality. In Mole McCord compares the over-soul of man, a Unitarian concept put forth by Ralph Waldo Emerson, with the limited capacities of the mole. In Clam, Fine and McCord give in to their silliest selves. McCord observes how man the diner and clam the dinner (in chowder no less) both evolved from the same ancestor; man is saved from the clam's fate, according to McCord, by his own initiative and work ethic. Fine has a lot of fun with the sounds suggesting insouciance, which explains why the clam never got ahead! Lots of fun here. TBB a cappella

Various Arrangers: Early Music for Men's Voices

This is a fine collection of unaccompanied music from some of the master's of the golden age of polyphony. Missa Ave Regina Coelorum (c.1464) is Dufay's crowning achievement and we know that Dufay requested that this Angus Dei be sung on his deathbed. Crucifixus was originally intended for solo voices, but is transcribed here for four-part male chorus. It may be sung effectively by solo voices, chamber choir, or full chorus. Everybody's repertoire should include some examples of this early music style and are both fun and interesting to perform. This music has been sung for 500 plus years and still continue please!

Sixteenth century composer Lodovico Viadana created the wonderful work "Exultate Justi" that is now a choral performance classic, performed regularly by choirs throughout the world. Veljo Tormis: The Bishop and the Pagan

The Story of the Bishop and the Pagan, drawn from musical documents and folklore, tells of the death of the British warrior and Christian missionary Bishop Henry at the hands of the Finnish peasant farmer Lalli near the town of Turku (Abo) in the winter of 1158. By a fortunate and unusual historical circumstance, the viewpoints of both sides have been preserved: a written Latin Gregorian chant "The Sequence Of Saint Henry" documents the British Christian side, and numerous folk songs represent the event as seen by the Finnish pagan. A fascinating and rewarding work for unaccompanied male voices.

Veljo Tormis: God Protect Us From War

Veljo Tormis is an Estonian composer, regarded to be one of the greatest living choral composers and one of the most important composers of the 20th century in Estonia. Internationally, his fame arises chiefly from his extensive body of choral music, which exceeds 500 individual choral songs, most of it a cappella. The great majority of these pieces are based on traditional ancient Estonian folksongs (regilaulud), either textually, melodically, or merely stylistically. This work for men's voice is challenging yet very worthwhile.

William Dawson: A Cappella Tuskegee Choral Series for Men

He began publishing and recording his arrangements of traditional African-American spirituals in 1955 and they are now considered to be some of the finest examples of the genre.
