In the spring of 1991, a new beat arrived in the fledgling world of modern a cappella - a beat in the form of Scott Leonard. Beyond the initial impact and power of his performances on stage and on reordings, he brought arrangements full of groove and heart. Unfamiliar with the growing "cult" of a cappella, his arrangements arrived influenced by the R&B-flavored pop of his Stevie Wonder-rich childhood, and a love for vocal groups of the past from the Mills Brothers to Bread to the Jackson Five. From the first bar of his first arrangement for Rockapella, 'Bed of Nails,' he brought a different approach. Since that first arrangement, Scott has arranged 100+ originals and covers for Rockapella. Here, finally, is an attempt to scratch the surface!

Few pop songs feature better harmonies that those of the Beach Boys, and "Help Me Rhonda" is one of their best, with a great close harmony chorus over a swinging bass line. The melody is in the Tenor 1 line, allowing either a single or group solo. The Classic Rock "Jet Airliner" anthem originally made famous by the Steve Miller Band is a perfect set-opener or closer, with soaring vocal guitar lines and powerful rock trio harmonies. The melody is in the Tenor 2 line, allowing for a single or multiple soloists. Yeah, yeah, yeah! This 1970's pop hit "Come In From The Rain" translates beautifully into a lush and deeply felt a cappella ballad. Perfect for graduation, end-of-the-year programing of a special concert feature, you will want to perform it again and again! "We Will Rock You" - Your whole crowd will join in with the stomps and claps as you perform this rock and roll classic! This iconic 1978 pop hit by Queen will bring down the house!

"Be True To Your School" - Perfect for pep rallies, sporting events and school assemblies, the breakdown in this arrangement gives your singers a chance to get everyone in the bleachers chanting and clapping along. Rah Rah Sis Boom Bah! "Change The World" is classic Eric Clapton! This bluesy a cappella doo-wop setting has a great message and is easy to learn. A great pop or jazz choir feature.

Sting's poignant song, 'Fragile,' expresses our vulnerability, and this sensitive arrangement will touch the hearts of singers and audiences alike. Written in the collegiate a cappella style but accessible to solid high school groups, this tune is timeless. 'Breakfast at TIffany's' is a perennial favorite of student a cappella groups since one-hit wonder Deep Blue Something charted in the 90s, this upbeat tune is finally available in published form. 'Brown Eyed Girl,' a Van Morrison classic is accessible for newly formed a cappella groups, and satisfying for more experienced ensembles. Popularized by Nat King Cole, the Great American Songbook tune, 'Orange Colored Sky,' provides an upbeat vehicle for either a baritone or alto soloist. If your singers are clamoring for an upbeat pop tune from this century, you can't go wrong with Maroon 5's megahit “This Love.” Arranged in the collegiate a cappella style but not too difficult for high school groups.

A selection of songs from the movies include “Alfie” from songwriting legends Hal David and Burt Bacharach and arranged by the acclaimed vocal jazz educator Phil Mattson. And So It Goes (Billy Joel arr. Kirby Shaw) TTBB a cappella |
Billy Joel is surely one of the great songwriters of contemporary pop songs and many of his songs are particularily suited for a cappella singing. Kirby Shaw's exquisite a cappella arrangement of his pop ballad "And So It Goes" is stunning and Kirby also does a fantastic job with "Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel), one of the most poignant and beautiful songs of the '90s. "Barbara Allen" - Singers can display expressiveness and beauty of phrasing in this lovely a cappella setting of the beloved English folk ballad. It tells the story of the unrequited love between Barbara Allen and Sweet William. Originally composed for a festival in Newfoundland, "The Game of Cards" is based on an old English folk song. It should be sung with a storyteller's sense of delight in his own story; part wide-eyed wonder, part knowing smile. "Chickens In the Garden" is a carousing English toasting song, hearty and robust and perfect for the pub with raised glass in hand or, if the chance arises, perhaps for your next rollicking encore or concert piece! This a cappella setting of a traditional South African praise song "Gabi, Gabi" just bursts with joyful energy. Dynamic contrast, percussion and a wide range of layered vocal textures make this an appealing concert choice. “The text exists merely to give form to the music and is meaningless,” says Finnish composer Mäntyjärvi, whose “El Hambo” in 1999 was an instant success with American high school choirs. In “Pseudo-Yoik” he takes a humorous look at the stereotype of the Lapland folk music.

Freedom Come, arr. Ben Allaway TTBB a cappella |
The TTBB version of 'Feedom Come' is the closing movement of 'Bandari: Inside These Walls,' a five moevement work encompassing a variety of African styles and combining Swahili and English text, and is written in the style of a South African freedom song. The piece begins a cappella; the conga drum is added after the first verse to create new energy and to delineate subtle rhythmic changes, particularly during the ending which alternates between 3/2 and 5/8. 'Back to Ethiopia' bears numerous attributes associated with the African-American spiritual, and might thus be effectively treated as a Jamaican equivalent. The text plaintively longs for a homeland; the 'verses' in the verse-and-refrain structure are meley repetitions of a single line of text; and the melody suggests very slow harmonic rhythm. The appeal of this tune lies in its ability to strike the ear as being both astonishingly simple and proundly moving. The moving folk song 'Kpanlongo' should be sung with a somewhat nasal and straight tone with strong accents on each syllable to clearly define the rhythm. This piece comes along with a very helpful pronunciation guide. The Pennsylvania Dutch folk song, 'Johnny Scmoker' is a fun song indeed. Through its seven verses, Johnny describes and accumulates all the instruments he can play. Simple choreography along with the accelerandos (to as fast as possible) give this piece its trademark - your choir and audience are sure to enjoy. The Jamaican folk song 'Hol' You Han'' is quite authentic and will be exciting for your choir to tackle, it even incorporates vocal/body percussion! An opotional piano part is included for this piece.

"Bonnie Mary of Argyle", from the Scottish Folksong Suite, is a stunning ballad perfect for male chorus. The SATB edition of "African Processional" was one of the best-sellers of all time and continues to be so. Part of the Ron Kean Multicultural Series, this TTBB edition was commissioned by Charles Bruffy and the Phoenix Bach Choir for the educational outreach program. This song of welcome uses African percussion and provides a plethora of creative staging ideas. "Evening" is a great classic of 20th century Scandinavian choral literature, evoking pastoral voices echoing in the mountains, now available for male voices. Engish lyrics by Norman Luboff. "Sailor Songs" is a set of three a cappella songs which will be a fun addition to you program and "Songs From Karad" by the master Zoltán Kodály is an English Version by Nancy Bush after a translation by Matyas Seiber.

Written for the Harvard Glee Club, this arrangement of 'Skye Boat Song' is men’s choral singing at its best! Jameson Marvin sets this beautiful Scottish folksong combining both the jauntiness of a sailor’s air and the sensitivity of a lullaby. From the Mark Foster catalog, 'What Wondrous Love Is This' is another well-loved folk hymn arrangement from J. Harold Moyer. Written for the Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus, Moyer has taken a beautiful folk hymn and crafted it into an exquisite choral anthem. Using the modal folk melody, he has embellished the harmony with broad, open chords and scalar movement, giving the piece a chant-like quality. The a cappella arrangement of 'Home on the Range' bursts with colorful harmonies and textures which expertly interpret the text. Described by some as a “perfect melody,” this American standard gives your ensemble a chance to show off their impeccable tuning and blending abilities for concert, contest, or festival. Features unison phrases, brief solo sections, and lush, unexpected harmonies. A traditional Irish folksong, 'The Minstrel Boy,' is a fun and exciting four part men's arrangement. The baritone solo in the middle of the piece is definitely noteworthy! 'Tenting On the Old Campground' is known as the most popular 'melancholy song' of the Cival War. It was written in 1862 by a concert ballad singer from New Hampshire wh was deferred from army service because of 'feebleness of constitution.' But he did sing it for Union troops in the field. The song appealed to soldiers on both sides of the conflict. This would be a great addition to your concert! 'Let's Drink!' is a fun three part men's piece that can be sung during your concert or even at the after-party!

"Under The Boardwalk", the 1964 classic hit by the Drifters, should be in every group's repertoire as should the 1962 Gene Chandler hit "Duke of Earl". Would you believe the '50s hit "Book of Love" was inspired by a toothpaste commercial? Sea shanties are an early tradition in a cappella music and are great fun to sing. Here we offer a selection of classics for male voices. “The Sailor’s Song” is an energetic and appealing a cappella sea chantey for Tenor Bass choirs that will be fun to rehearse and a showstopper in performance! Great for building skills and camaraderie! Noted arranger Vijay Singh brings us three classics that will provide excellent programming materials for male quartets, ensembles and choirs. "Leave Her, Johnny, Leave Her" is a playful arrangement in which the ensemble encourages one of its own (Johnny) to bid farewell to his female shore leave companion. Encourage the singers to imagine they are loading the ship for departure and watching with amusement as young Johnny tries to bid his lady farewell. 'Bangidero" is derived from a traditional sea chantey in which a crew sings of admiration for its captain and his tales of shore leave opportunities in South America. "Her Bright Smile", based on the plaintive words of an anonymous sailor poem, details the sailor's loneliness and longing for his ladylove. Marshall Bartholomew, arranger for much of the Yale Glee Club repertoire, does a fine job with the traditional “What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor?”.

Moondance (Marshall Webb) TTBB a cappella |
This is a nice, simple treatment of the Van Morrison favorite "Moondance". A solo in the second tenor range is true to the melody with some interesting chord subsititutions in the harmony parts. Beginning with a duet between solo and bass, there is plenty of room for some subtle, improvised vocal percussion from the other two voices. A bass part that doesn't get too low makes this a great choice for a young male quartet. An easy, yet effective arrangement of the all time Rodgers and Hart ballad "You Are Too Beautiful", that gives your men's section a chance to really shine! Here's a snappy, toe-tapping rendition of " Let's Get Away From It All". It starts right in on the chorus and cruises along to a big ending. Straight-ahead, very fun to sing, and makes a great show opener. "I've Got A Crush On You" starts with a rubato introduction into a slow-ish swing groove for the chorus. The verse is in the middle and is sung rubato with "oo's" behind the lead. Back to tempo second time around with a half-step modulation into the last'A' with a ritard into the ending. TTBB

A very happy version of "Sunday" inspired by Sinatra's famous recording. The bass leads in with everyone on words right off the bat. There are fun syncopations and falls in the chorus with a half-step modulation with no pivot chord (a sort of key 'slam'). Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week quoted in the tag. This is a very fun arrangmenet. "Without A Song" What more can we say? A beautiful song, a beautiful arrangement. 'Over the Raininbow' is a simple, yet beautiful harmonization of the classic tune. 'You Are Too Beautiful' is an easy, yet effective arrangement of this all time Rodgers and Hart ballad, that gives your men's section a chance to really shine!

Blue And Sentimental" is a slow grooving version of this Basie classic. It starts out right on the chorus with everyone on words. "Oo's" on bridge the first time around with a half step modulation into the last 'A'. This is a very tight arrangement with ample opportunity to work on swing feel by accenting the upbeat on eighth note passages. "Let's Get Away From It All" is a snappy, toe-tapping rendition. It starts right in on the chorus and cruises along to a big ending. Straight-ahead, very fun to sing, and makes a great show opener. "Lillette" is a somewhat rare tune performed by the Nat Cole trio in his early days. It starts out with a rubato verse going into a snappy chorus with tons of fun syncopated rhythms that keep things moving. Stop time kicks in the tag send this one off with a bang.

Bye, Bye, Blackbird, arr. Bob Martin TTBB a cappella |
The arrangement of 'Bye, Bye, Blackbird' is a rubato ballad version of this pretty, old song. There is some re-harmonizaton, but overall the chords remain pretty square. You will find much opportunity to interpret phrasing as you like. The infectious original chart, 'Love Will Find a Way' starts out with a bed of close harmonies that explodes into a funk groove, highlighting a tenor solo. After the ensemble is featured in the bridge, the arrangement moves up a whole step. There is plenty of room for soloing as the tune moves through the chorus and ends with a thick-textured finish. The perfect showcase for your men. The 8-part arrangement of 'Eleanor Rigby' challenges the singer without detracting from the great lyrics. The first two verses can be baritone solos or the entire baritone section in unison. The third verse incorporates some unison and some unusual chord substitutions. The tenor 1 part is mostly in the falsetto range. The tenor 2 part usually falls in the head voice range and is all harmony. Works well as a showcase piece or closer for a male group with strong part-singing skills.

In "Heartache Tonight" rock & roll, country, and streetcorner sensibilities combine in this fun, up tempo of the Eagles classic. Complete with handclaps and footstomps, this arrangement features a high tenor solo and lots of moving harmony, making it a perfect closing song or encore. "Only You (and You Alone)" is a streetcorner ballad made famous by The Platters is the perfect showcase for a male quartet that's looking for a fun doo-wop piece. The solo is in the first tenor, and crosses into falsetto frequently, allowing for a powerhouse vocal showcase, and the other three parts have fun with the lyrics. Street corner meets close harmony in this rendering of Paul Simon's ode to days-gone-by " Still Crazy After All These Years". Perfect for graduations and retrospective events. The tenor solo can be shared or split between several singers. Light vocal percussion is optional. First a hit for Maurice Chevalier, then Louis Prima, then David Lee Roth, the catchy, flirtatious songs, 'Just A Gigalo/I Ain't Got Nobody' have topped the charts for three generations. It includes a traditional favorite, the celebrated "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" by Peter Lutkin. Arranged here for the first time for men’s voices, this familiar response is followed by a new, original composition, Benediction, that is more contemporary in nature. Both pieces contain lush harmonies and a rich glee club sound that bring out the best in a men’s choir. Put a beautiful ending on your worship service with Two Benedictions for Men. "A Parting Blessing" is a proven winner that has stood the test of time. We are pleased to award that prestigious status to A Parting Blessing. The familiar words and melody will resonate with your audiences. A great way to close your concert. In a time of increased multi-cultural awareness, "Bwana Awabariki" offers an ideal piece of African culture for both churches and schools. The song emphasizes rhythm, blend, and African-style vocalism with broad, open chords and the familiar low, low bass part. This warm a cappella blessing would be especially effective with added percussion. Well suited for World Communion, mission emphasis, or any multi-cultural gathering, Bwana Awabariki is fun.

The highly expressive setting of 'Barbara Allen' brings the rich harmonies and sad, but poignant, text to life in a grand and glorious way. Burliegh's arrangements of 'Deep River' and 'Heav'n Heav'n,' making them their own. The results are fine, challenging arrangements that your men's choir will love to sing. Do Not Go Gentle Into The Night - Kenneth Jennings TTBB a cappella |
Kenneth Jennings' settings of two Dylan Thomas poems 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,' and And Death Shall Have No Dominion' are both beautiful arrangements. 'Loch Lomond' is a Scottish folk song that dates back to the Jacobite Rebellion. Care has been taken to preserve the authenticity of the language in this arrangement, with the help of a ipa chart in the performance notes of this chart. With an energetic, strong opening and a more lyric, gentle section in the middle, 'Alleluia' provides an overall sense of the joy we experience while praising god. 'Let the Bullgine Tun,' a vigorous, humorous, traditional sea chantey is guaranteed to delight both singers and audiences.

Ubi Caritas TTBB a cappella |
'Ubi Caritas' is a setting of the second verse of the beautiful Maundy Thursday text. The work's character and melodic structure is strongly based on chant and, as a result, requires a sensitive approach to subtle tempo changes, text and phrasing. After several climactic sections, the piece ends very simply and pognantly with a request for peace and understanding. 'Jing-ga-lye-ya' was an instant success for Chor Leoni Men's Choir. Using nonsense words, it is rhythmic and upbeat, and uses cyclical repetition in the parts creating an incredibly catchy groove! Loomer's arrangement of 'Goin Home,' the folksong/principal theme from Dvorak's New World Symphony with baritone solo, was written for Chor Leoni and calls for low D flats from the basses... but you do have their permission to change keys!

Subtitled "Four Vivariations", Irving Fine's McCord's Menagerie, are settings of humorous poems by David McCord. With the bumbling "loo's" accompanying the tenor melody, Fine's setting of Vultur Gryphus implies a harmless creature. Instead of the movie western's ominous bird associated with death, Fine's animal seems too lazy and stupid to get his own food! Jerboa, classified as the genus jaculus jaculus, is as active and scary in Fine's world as Vultur Gryphus is laid back and friendly. Fine agrees with those to whom a darting (the translation of the Latin jaculus) small rodent is sinister and creepy, attributes he conveys through abrupt entrances and minor tonality. In Mole McCord compares the over-soul of man, a Unitarian concept put forth by Ralph Waldo Emerson, with the limited capacities of the mole. In Clam, Fine and McCord give in to their silliest selves. McCord observes how man the diner and clam the dinner (in chowder no less) both evolved from the same ancestor; man is saved from the clam's fate, according to McCord, by his own initiative and work ethic. Fine has a lot of fun with the sounds suggesting insouciance, which explains why the clam never got ahead! Lots of fun here. TBB a cappella

The Story of the Bishop and the Pagan, drawn from musical documents and folklore, tells of the death of the British warrior and Christian missionary Bishop Henry at the hands of the Finnish peasant farmer Lalli near the town of Turku (Abo) in the winter of 1158. By a fortunate and unusual historical circumstance, the viewpoints of both sides have been preserved: a written Latin Gregorian chant "The Sequence Of Saint Henry" documents the British Christian side, and numerous folk songs represent the event as seen by the Finnish pagan. A fascinating and rewarding work for unaccompanied male voices.
