Review: A unique guide to teaching unaccompanied singing! Gitika Partington's a cappella arrangements are used by youth and community choirs around the world. Gitika believes in the sensational power of group singing, bringing people together to express joy and celebration through song. Not being able to read music is no obstacle and Gitika's tips and the original arrangements included here demonstrate just how rewarding and inclusive teaching a cappella by ear and gesture can be! Gitika Partington is a singer/songwriter, vocal arranger, teacher and choral director. She has an MA in choral education and holds many other musical qualifications. She runs regular 'popular and world style' singing workshops as well as national training sessions for adults and children. In addition she runs three adult community choirs where all the music is learned by ear and is mostly self arranged. One of Gitika's major loves is a cappella vocal arranging, which she does for her three choirs and her vocal workshops. Her arrangements are used by youth and community choirs across the UK and internationally. This book contains the first of many of her arrangements she would like to share even more widely.

Review: To make positive change in the world, start with the face you see in the mirror! Michael Jackson's pop hit from 1988 makes a powerful impact through the immediacy of a cappella vocals! 'Axel F' - Rocketing to popularity originally with the film Beverly Hills Cop and more recently with the internet sensation Crazy Frog, this song retains incredible popularity with all ages. Review: Paul Simon is certainly one of the greatest songwriters of the modern popular song and here are some classics that are sure to please. The phenomenal Simon & Garfunkel #1 hit from 1970 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' in a powerful a cappella setting! From the wistful opening phrases, this iconic song builds to a full-voiced forte, alternating between rich homophonic choral textures and solo melodies with vocal accompaniment sections, before its quiet and gentle closing tones. The King's Singers setting of the famous Simon and Garfunkel song 'April Come She Will' explores the seasons through a gentle vocal tapestry of rhythm and rich harmony with a smooth lead floating above it all. 'Baby Driver' - Sheer, unbridled fun! For college or adult jazz chorus, this arrangement as sung by the New York Voices is a bit tricky, but well worth the effort. It features incredible harmony and rhythm and some a cappella sections, but the purpose of this piece is not to get technical-just to have fun! Four-part scat singing frames the piece on either end, while your baritone soloist goes to town (with great choral support) on each verse. Baby Driver, extracted from the New York Voices Songs of Paul Simon CD, is a toe-tappin', hand-clappin' jazz party. Invite everyone you know!
Songlist: April Come She Will, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Baby Driver
Review: Few country tunes in the past decade have had a bigger impact that his future classic 'Mayberry' by Rascal Flatts, which reminds us how good the good old days were. The fast-moving harmonies and sixteenth note background textures supporting the tenor solo sound far harder to sing than they are, resulting in a great 'show-off' piece for your group. Craig Hella Johnson's setting of Dolly Parton's 'Light of a Clear Blue Morning' is infused with light and hopefulness as it opens with a solo soprano and gradually builds to a joyful overflowing of sound and vocal texture, then gently relaxing into a reflective conclusion. The tender a cappella ballad 'When You Say Nothing at All' recorded by Alison Krauss captures all the emotion and expressiveness you could ever want. Perfect for jazz and pop groups, you'll create sheer magic in concert! Introduce your choir to the fun of a cappella singing with this accessible arrangement of the Lee Ann Womack hit 'I Hope You Dance' that topped the charts. Crafted for success, this setting gives all the parts a chance to sing the melody while the background vocals are easy and create a perfect stylistic texture. Whether you sing it straight or camp it up, the novelty tune 'Happy Trails' from the King of the Cowboys makes a great encore. A cappella or accompanied, you'll ride off into the sunset in style!
Songlist: Happy Trails, I Hope You Dance, Mayberry, When You Say Nothing at All, Light of a Clear Blue Morning

Review: A selection of songs from the movies include 'Alfie' from songwriting legends Hal David and Burt Bacharach and arranged by the acclaimed vocal jazz educator Phil Mattson. This song and text is among the most meaningful in contemporary music and is a personal favorite of this reviewer. Rich harmonies highlight the powerful emotions inherent in the text. The lush a cappella setting of the love ballad 'Till There Was You' from The Music Man will be a wonderful choice for more advanced men's ensembles from high school to adult. An ideal festival selection! 'Candle On The Water' from Pete's Dragon is available for the first time in men's a cappella setting. This Disney classic will once again enchant your audience. Beautiful harmonies gently accompany the easily-sung melody. Men's choruses will create a magical spell with this richly expressive setting for unaccompanied TTBB voices 'The Nearness of You' with solo of the famous Hoagy Carmichael standard. A challenging work but well worth the effort!
Songlist: Till There Was You, The Nearness of You, Alfie, Candle On The Water

The entertaining novelty song 'I Wan'na Be Like You ' from Walt Disney Pictures' The Jungle Book, originally sung by Louis Prima) has been arranged by the King's Singers' Philip Lawson for a cappella ensembles. Challenging, but worth it - it's a perfect encore! From The Little Mermaid, 'Kiss The Girl' is available in a fantastic a cappella arrangement. Fun Latin rhythms and a variety of vocal inflections make this a great change of pace for any concert! The theme song from the Disney animated classic 'Alice in Wonderland' simply sparkles in a warm a cappella arrangement. Nominated for a Best Score Academy Award, this music is timeless. Here's the showstopper 'Under The Sea ' from The Little Mermaid in a dynamite a cappella rendition by the incomparable Kirby Shaw. Great Caribbean change of pace! Available for the first time in a mixed and men's a cappella setting, the Disney classic 'Candle on the Water' will once again enchant your audience. Beautiful harmonies gently accompany the easily-sung melody. Special!

Review: Beautiful harmonies and a lyrical melody combine to make 'Once Upon A Time' a true classic. Recorded by many artists including Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darrin, the song was featured in the Broadway production of All American. The touching standard ' Till There Was You', from The Music Man, in a beautiful a cappella setting by Kirby Shaw with jazz harmonies that will enchant both your singers and your audience. 'If Ever I Would Leave You ' is one of the top Broadway love ballads of all time, and this arrangement is a natural for a cappella women. Fantastic lyrics offer unique opportunities for lyric expression. The new setting of 'Memory' from the pen of former King's Singers Philip Lawson has sensitive harmony and thoughtful voice-leading making this Broadway chestnut a winner!

Review: 'Fields of Gold' - If it wasn't written by Sting, this haunting melody could easily be a traditional English fold song. Review: Widely considered to one of today's top a cappella arrangers Derric Johnson is also one of our favorites. This songbook is a collection of 14 classic American folk songs as for arranged and performed by Derric Johnson's Liberty Voices and which can be heard on their CDs 'A Cappella Americana' and 'A Slice of A Cappella'. To study a Derric Johnson arrangement is to contemplate the canon of a master. Key to his style is his seamless blending of classical choral and jazz idioms that are fresh, yet easy to assimilate. We highly recommend this songbook for most all choirs, ensembles and groups should have a least one Derric Johnson arrangement in their repertoire.
