Seattle Bach Choir

Seattle Bach Choir

Community Chorus

Based in Seattle, WA

In 1984, Dr. Wallace Golecke founded the Seattle Bach Choir with the idea that performances by the group would highlight the works of composers of the Baroque period, and Johann Sebastian Bach in particular. Under the direction of Louis Magor, Dr. Gregory Kent Vancil, Dr. Anne Lyman, and our newest director Daniel A Mahraun, the repertoire of this chamber choir has expanded to include music from the Medieval period through very recent years, including some premiere performances of works by current composers. It continues to be our goal to present high quality performances of music that is not often performed, but that is significant within the canon of choral literature. While many of our performances are primarily of music performed either by a cappella choir or with piano, we also perform pieces with orchestra, such as Haydn's Mass in Time of War, Handel's Dixit Dominus, and the St. John Passion and Mass in B Minor of our namesake, J. S. Bach. Our programming is accessible for audiences who are hearing their first choral music program, or those who are seasoned choral music aficionados.

The Seattle Bach Choir programs music that is especially interesting and beautiful, but not always frequently performed. This includes music from well known composers in addition to music from those composers who are not yet well known, but who should be. It is our interest to perform a balance of music from the Renaissance to music of today, and that has been our consistent offering in our programs for the past several years.

Among the many offerings of the past several years are compositions by Dufay, Josquin, de la Rue, Victoria, Palestrina, Schein, Schutz, Byrd, Gibbons, Handel, Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Strauss, Verdi, Poulenc, Pizzetti, Harris, Eben, Musgrave, Ives, Hawley, Stanford, Kechley, Lauridsen, Youtz, and many, many others. We have uncovered works long-buried and hosted some northwest premieres and world premieres.

Founded - 1984.
