Sounds of Aloha Chorus History

Sounds of Aloha Chorus

Based in: Honolulu, United States.

For 60 years, the Sounds of Aloha Chorus has entertained local and Mainland audiences with its unique sound, off -beat humor, and heartfelt presentation. Under the direction of Rob Hartley, the chorus performs a diverse repertoire of barbershop standards, jazz, patriotic and Broadway hits, hapa haole favorites and much more. Through concerts, Christmas shows, and numerous other public and private performances, the chorus has collaborated with the Honolulu Symphony, the Diamond Head Theater Shooting Stars, The Castle Performing Arts Center, the Royal Hawaiian Band, the USS Missouri, the Hawaii National Guard 111th Army Band, the two Sweet Adelines Choruses (Na Leo Lani Chorus and Hawaii Blend Show Chorus), the BYU Hawaii Concert Choir, Honolulu Boy Choir and many high school choirs.

They have performed for the Special Olympics, Battleship Missouri's Veteran's Day ceremonies, and UH Volleyball and Basketball games. In addition, quartets from the chorus have brought a sense of romance to hundreds of individuals through Singing Valentines.

Every few years, the chorus gets to take its act on the road. Trips to the West Coast and New Zealand have been taken for competition. The chorus traveled to San Jose, CA to compete with other choruses and quartets in October 2006 in the Far Western District Competition, winning the Plateau AA Championship. In 2004, the chorus competed in New Zealand, at the Pan Pacific Convention. In 2008, we hosted the Pan Pacific Convention here in Honolulu. Twenty-eight Barbershop Quartets and 17 Choruses from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Alaska and the West Coast of the USA competed with over 800 attendees to the convention. This was a highly successful event.

The Sounds of Aloha Chorus is also a contributing supporter of the arts and community projects such as the Honolulu Symphony, Castle Performing Arts Center, Diamond Head Theatre, Hawaii Theatre, USS Missouri Association, the Hawaii Alliance for Arts Education, Olelo, Hawaii Technology Institute, Hawaii Opera, Honolulu Boy Choir and Special Olympics

The founders of our chapter include some of the leading figures in business, medicine, and politics of the late 1940s and early 50s such as William Quinn (governor), Val Ossipoff (architect), Bill Merrill (designed Blaisdell concert hall), Dr. Ralph Cloward (a famous surgeon), and Peter Chang (stockbroker) to name a few.
