Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra History

Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra

Based in: Woodbury, United States.

The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra is an arts organization that is unique in the Twin Cities. It is the only musical group in the US whose primary mission is to provide food to people in need. 100% of the proceeds from freewill offerings collected at the concerts are given to local food shelves in the areas they perform.

This group was started in 1985 in Woodbury, MN, after area churches combined choirs to perform Handel's Messiah during the Christmas season. A freewill offering was collected at that concert and donated to the Christian Cupboard Food Shelf. It was then that the vision took shape and the group found its mission. The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra was actually formed in 1987 under the direction of Gerrit Lamain, who's own experience growing up in Holland during WWII, and the suffering he experienced first-hand, only helped to strengthen its mission.

The group is made up entirely of volunteers, including the directors. Each member has extensive experience in school, community and church musical groups, and is dedicated to helping those in need. They love to share their talent and joy of music with the audiences when they perform.

The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra performs 10 - 12 concerts per year in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Members come from all across the Twin Cities and western Minnesota communities. The musical genres span from classical, hymns, patriotic, gospel and more. There are no auditions required to join, but those interested should have a strong musical ability and performance experience. Rehearsals and performances run from September - November and January - April. Rehearsals are 9 - 12:00 on Saturdays at New Life Academy in Woodbury, MN. Concerts are held Sundays at 4:00 and include venues in and around the Twin Cities, Red Wing, Wabasha, Mora, Willmar, Olivia and more.

The Woodbury Chorus and Orchestra was incorporated in 1991 and received official non-profit status in 1992. The group welcomes inquiries from churches and other organizations interested in hosting a performance.
