Omaha Chamber Singers History

Omaha Chamber Singers

Based in: Omaha, United States.

The Omaha Chamber Singers has solidly established itself as a choral ensemble of the highest caliber, earning admiration for excellent performances of exceptional choral literature of all historical periods. Initially organized as a sixteen-voice ensemble for a single concert project in June of 1999, the immediate success of the collaboration quickly evolved into an ongoing ensemble of sixteen to twenty-four singers, offering a wonderful array of choral performances each season. The organization was soon incorporated as a non-profit arts organization under 501(c)3 status.

In addition to a regular concert series, the Omaha Chamber Singers has performed for conventions of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association, North Central American Choral Directors Association, and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. OCS has collaborated with the Cathedral Arts Project at Saint Cecilia Cathedral, Joslyn Castle, and Sacred Arts Council Lincoln and made appearances on several college campuses and for other special events. Fostering ongoing educational goals, OCS has served as the performing choir for conducting workshops led by the internationally renowned conductors Dale Warland and Rene Clausen. The ensemble has appeared on the Omaha Symphony's Masterworks and Chamber series, performing works of Bach and Handel and continues a relationship with the Symphony. On September 11, 2002, the Omaha Chamber Singers, with the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra, participated in the international "Rolling Requiem" project, marking the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks with a performance of Mozart's Requiem in an overcrowded Saint Cecilia Cathedral. The Omaha World-Herald hailed this event as one of the Top 10 Events in the city for the year. In November of 2000, OCS presented the North American premiere of Roxanna Panufnik's Westminster Mass with members of the Omaha Symphony.

OCS is comprised of the finest singers in the Omaha area, several of whom travel an hour each way for rehearsals and performances. Most singers hold academic degrees in music and are currently employed as music educators and professionals in the larger metropolitan area.
