In Mulieribus History
In Mulieribus (in muh-li-AIR-i-bus)- the Latin phrase meaning "among women"- is a professional female vocal ensemble dedicated to strengthening community through the art of music. The ensemble specializes in vocal music written primarily before 1750 and champions historically overlooked works and new repertoire for women's voices. Founded in 2004 and formally incorporated into a non-profit corporation in 2007, In Mulieribus (IM) has presented a highly acclaimed annual concert series in Portland since 2007 and appears frequently as guest artist throughout the region. Performances by IM have been broadcast on nationally syndicated radio shows such as Performance Today and Millennium of Music. Recent hallmarks of the ensemble's artistic success include a sold-out performance of Ordo Virtutum, the medieval morality play by Hildegard von Bingen, during Chamber Music Northwest's celebration of women composers in 2017; a collaborative performance with the Portland Youth Philharmonic of Richard Einhorn's oratorio Voices of Light in 2018; release of a fifth CD, Cycles of Eternity, hailed for its "deliciously exact intonation through all types of harmonic situations" by American Record Guide; and an invitation to perform at the American Choral Directors Association's regional conference in 2020. In fall 2019, with grant support from the Oregon Cultural Trust and Regional Arts and Cultural Council, IM honored the 400th birth anniversary of 17th century Venetian composer, Barbara Strozzi with special concerts, lectures, and lecture-recitals at area colleges, illustrating IM's commitment to highlighting women's contributions to Western music, and re-examining their roles throughout music history. IM has five self-released recordings to date, two of which have been featured as Critics' Picks in The Oregonian newspaper. Notre Dame de Grace presents conductus compositions from the late twelfth century, while A December Feast, features music for the various feasts in December, including Christmas. In Mulieribus: LIVE and LIVE II are compilations of live recordings from concerts between 2004-2008 and 2009-2015. Their most recent CD, Cycles of Eternity, features significant 21st century contributions to the repertoire for women's voices with a focus on living, local composers, as well as female composers and poets of the past and present. Since its founding, IM has partnered with organizations that support those in need, including homeless youth, recent immigrants, women, and children. Past partners have included Sisters of the Road, Bradley Angle, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Rehab's Sisters, cares northwest, Rose Haven, YWCA, and Lutheran Community Services. The board has given free tickets partners, performed a benefit concert, collected socks for the homeless and bedding and coats for new immigrants, and performed as guest artists at BRAVO, an El Sistema program for underserved students. IM participates in Arts for All, offering tickets to low-income individuals, and students are able to attend concerts at greatly reduced prices. |
