Jay, Ray and Gee

Jay, Ray and Gee

This group sings a cappella doo-wop on the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana in the French Quarter for hundreds of thousands of tourists per year. The group also appeared in the Paramount Motion Picture "Double Jeopardy" as the "Jackson Square Singers." The cameo comes up about mid-movie, when Ashley Judd's character reaches New Orleans by plane and "Amazing Grace" can be heard in the background. Then during the next scene, Ashley Judd takes a brief stroll in Jackson Square in search of her treacherous husband's whereabouts and passes in front of the group as they continue singing Amazing Grace for a few bars.

The members consist of Jerome Alexander, Arzia Harris, Barth Phillips, and Reginald Ringo. The group has been singing a cappella since the Summer of 1994. The group performs as a trio, quartet, and occasionally a quintet with alternate vocalists Joseph Maize and/or Avist Martin. The group traveled to London as ambassadors for Southern Comfort recently. They constantly perform for visiting corporate conventions and destination planners; doing everything from singing people off and on tour busses, to opening meetings and getting corporate executives out of their seats to the Motown sound or an Elvis tune. This project represents a dual effort by the group as a whole, as well as some solo dubs by group leader Jerome Alexander (he's got a little Bobby McFerrin in him). He has traveled to Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Spain with an a cappella gospel quintet called First Revolution (as their bass singer; performing for festivals and special concerts all across Europe. A cappella fans, be on the look out for an all a cappella gospel doo-wop project to come from this direction within the next year.

Jay, Ray and Gee : The Street Entertainer (Vol 4)

Review: "A'Capella New Orleans" by local favorites Jay, Ray & Gee is a generous helping of soulful Doo-Wop, tasty as a hot mess of Cajun shrimp. "Runaround Sue," "Save The Last Dance for Me," "Who Wrote the Book of Love?," the Otis Redding anthem "Dock of the Bay," "Don't Know Much About History," "Games People Play," Van Morrison's "Brown-Eyed Girl," "I'll Be There," "In the Still of the Night," "Let It Whip," "Kiss and Say Goodbye," finishing with the spirituals "This Little Light of Mine" and "Savior, Hear My Humble Cry." These guys have paid some dues, you can hear it in their voices, and we would fly to New Orleans just to catch some of their authentic, roots Doo-Wop live at some funky Big Easy bar!

Songlist: Jailhouse Rock, Runaround Sue, Save the Last Dance for Me, The Book of Love, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Wonderful World, (They Just Can't Stop it) The Games People Play, Brown-Eyed Girl, I'll Be Around, In the Still of the Night (I Remember), Let it Whip, Kiss and Say Goodbye, This Little Light of Mine, Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior, Is There ANybody Here Who Loves My Jesus?
