Pop music has long known the value of sampling and building upon a well-loved Motown hit. Toys R Us fights to keep shelves stocked with the latest twists on century-old board games, from Star Wars Battleship to Toy Story Memory. And with new versions of such favorite films as Karate Kid and Footloose, it seems even Hollywood has gotten the message: You can't beat a classic. Nostalgic moms and dads are lining up with kids in tow, ready to share the growing line-up of souped-up childhood favorites.
So maybe, just maybe, when acclaimed family entertainers Go Fish hatched a seemingly hair-brained scheme to bring hymns to kids, the beloved group-who, among numerous accolades, has appeared on The Today Show and performed before a capacity crowd at St. Paul's Xcel Energy Center-just might have known what they were doing. They're Kickin' It Old School.
In the age of PowerPoint and video screens, many of today's kids have never even seen a hymnal. But as Go Fish members Jamie Statema, Jason Folkmann and Andy Selness know, the Truth is always the Truth, and those classic songs that have remained in our heads and hearts since childhood still have a place for families today-even if they're played more often on iPods than church organs.

I'll Fly Away
Review: Jamie, Andy and Jason, "The Go Fish Guys" have the mission to create "Great Music for Kids That Won't Drive Parents Bonkers," and they have six excellent Contemporary Christian albums and two wonderful live DVDs in the Primarily A Cappella catalog at Singers.com. The Guys use synthesizers, sampling and hip electronic effects and cutting edge arrangements to reinvent and teach classic hymns to a whole new generation of children, songs such as "Sweet Song Of Salvation/I Love to Tell the Story," "This Is My Father's World," "Blessed Assurance," "I'll Fly Away," and "The Old Rugged Cross." There are also new tunes with the same themes, the title tune, "I'm a Soldier in the Army of the Lord," "Before the Throne of God Above," the Blues/Rock "Shelter in A Time of Storm" and "The Solid Rock" featuring Denver and the Mile High Orchestra. Often accompanied, these three guys have once again created an album full, rich, joyous, inspirational sound that children and adults will surely love!
Songlist: Kickin' It Old School, Sweet Song of Salvation/ I Love To Tell The Story, I'm A Soldier In The Army Of The Lord, This Is My Father's World, Blessed Assurance, Before The Throne Of God Above, I'll Fly Away, Shelter In A Time Of Storm, The Solid Rock, The Old Rugged Cross
Review: The three talented men of Tennessee-based Go Fish, whose finely-crafted original songs have graced 6 previous CDs and 1 DVD, which are some of our favorite, and best-selling Contemporary Christian recordings. When two of the men became fathers, they turned their songwriting and live-performance talents towards children, and they have created a remarkably popular body of work, selling over 500,000 CDs and DVDs. For a cappella purists, that a few CDs ago Go Fish went (rock-band) accompanied, and they have continued that trend. That said, we're once again amazed by the energy, joy and creativity of "Infectious," which is defined on the back of the liner notes as "something that is easily and readily communicated," and that "few things are more infectious than a godly lifestyle." 10 songs, plus bonus track ("Silent Night," from "More Than a Story." Favorites are "I See You," "Until The Stars Fall," "That's What Amazes Me," the title tune, "Watch Me Go," "Clover Leaf Park," "You're My Little Girl," "You Remind Me" and "Lord I Give You Me." There's a lot of love and feeling in "Infectious," the product of the consistent, beautiful and creative ministry of these talented young men!

Take Me Away
Review: A percussion-accompanied four piece from Minnesota, Go Fish are contemporary Christian in orientation. However, the message is delivered by the music, which is extremely current in the Blenders/Rockapella mode, and equally tight. Indeed, the group has amassed quite a following, courtesy of a rigorous touring schedule. Their melodies are catchy, the progressions familiar without complete predictability, and the execution energetic and focused. Go Fish shouldn't be consigned to the Christian catagory exclusively, as their sound is accessible enough to cross over to a wider audience, and deservedly so.

Love Like This
Review: Through six excellent previous CDs, Franklin, TN's dynamic all male trio Go Fish has long become one of our favorite Contemporary Christian groups. "Snazzy," their 7th, continues a trend that began with "Splash" when the "Go Fish Guys" became parents and directed their considerable musical writing, arranging and performance talents to turning on kids to Jesus. "Superstar," "Snooze," and the Showtime DVD, all excellent, followed, and "Snazzy" is every bit as powerful and innovative-we have to report, however, that the whole album is heavily percussioned and accompanied. That said, you and your kids will love these 13 songs, which "rock out," and do it well, more than any Contemporary Christian recording that we've ever heard. The title tune, "Stories," "Superhero," "Bible Book Bop," "Gotta Move," "Saved" and "Love Like This" all have an upbeat, hip Christian message that boogies down. "American Kid" is a patriotic anthem for kids that might have been written and performed by Aerosmith. The funky "Itsy Bitsy Spider" is one of the best arrangements on the album, "The Mom Song" is a hip love letter that everyone can relate to, and the refrain of "Jammies," "Get your jammies on--wash your face, brush your teeth, say your prayers, then go to sleep" is more good advice, that rocks, from Go Fish.
Songlist: Snazzy, Stories, Superhero, Bible Book Bop, Gotta Move, Just Rock (Intro), American Kid, Saved, Love Like This, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Hit The Drum, The Mom Song, Jammies

SkinnMarinkyDinkyDink
Review: Since they have all married and some have become fathers, the members of one of our favorite Contemporary Christian groups, all-male a cappella trio Go Fish, have released some excellent material directed at their own and other children. "Splash," "Superstar" and the new DVD, "Showtime" are all winners, and "Snooze" is no exception. We were especially impressed with originals by group member Jamie Statema, who wrote the sweet title tune, "Little Buckaroo," "You Are Mine," "You're My Little Girl" and "Awake." We also liked the traditional "SkinnaMarinkyDinkyDink" and a pair of originals by Billy Sprague, "Sail Away" and "Welcome to the World." You can see the love here in the faces of the 3 dads, feel it in their voices as they sing these touching songs, and hear it in the lyrics. "You Are Mine" is a powerful lullabye, letting a child know that they are unconditionally loved and protected as they go to sleep-a big improvement on the fairly scary concept of "If I should die before I wake." Great stuff especially for parents and children from Go Fish!

Christmas Time
Review: High energy Contemporary Christian all male trio Go Fish apply their tight Rockapella-like sound and cutting-edge arrangements to a Christmas collection, beginning with an accompanied, rewritten "Joy to the World," seguing into a surprising, upbeat "We Three Kings," with jazzy scat non-vocal percussion. An a cappella, traditional, richly harmonic "Away in a Manger/ Beautiful Savior" medley follows, a jazzy, heavily-accompanied original, "Christmas with a Capital C". A finger-snapping, mellow a cappella "White Christmas," a thought-provoking "It's About the Cross," plus the rhythmic, powerful "Little Drummer Boy." round out the album.

Planes, Phones and Microwaves
Review: In their mission to share the word of God with the world through their music, Contemporary Christian , Minnesota-based 3-man group Go Fish have brought us 3 excellent a cappella CDs, "More Than A Story," "Out of Breath" and "Part of the Proof. Some non-vocal percussion, synthesizer, etc. are there, but the message, the voices and the infectious original words and melodies are what stands out. 10 songs: "I've Got the Joy" makes you want to get up and boogie, "The B-I-B-L-E," "Alleluia," the rocking, joyful chorus ("Oh me, oh my") of "Big, Bad Billy," the sweet, inspirational "You Are Mine," "Planes, Phones and Microwaves," the wonderfully arranged "This Little Light of Mine," "Ladybug," "My Very Own Church" and the powerful "I'll Do My Best." Go Fish, their music and their ministry just keep getting better and more popular, and every cut on Splash! is an upbeat winner!

That A Cappella Sound
Review: Go Fish, a 3-man A Cappella powerhouse of sound, continues to spread the word of God in their newest album made especially to reach out to the younger generations. This CD is sure to be a treat for the whole family as it provides strong moral messages as well as catchy melodies, lush harmonies and a rockin' beat. "Superstar" features 10 unforgetable tracks, some highlights are the up-tempo inspirational tune "Superstar," the spiritually uplifting title, "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High," a fresh, contemporary version of "Jesus Loves me." Also, the educational "Ten Commandment Boogie," and an old favorite that parents are sure to remember and kids are sure to love, "SkinnaMarinkyDinkyDink." The CD ends with a beautiful soothing ballad "Sail Away"...and no, its not the Enya song. If you're looking for fun wholesome family oriented music, check out Go Fish.

Review: Go Fish, one of our favorite Contemporary Christian groups, is an a cappella trio comprised of 3 young men, 2 of them fathers, who have toured across the country and sold over 500,000 albums. Jamie, Jason and Andy, those "Go Fish Guys," possibly because of their experiences with parenthood, have directed their ministry at children and their parents, with joyous results. Their CDs "Splash," "Superstar, the recently released "Snooze" and this new DVD, "Showtime" are all winners. "Showtime" features songs from "Splash" and "Superstar," and it is performed before (and with) an adoring, excited audience of kids and their parents. Interspersed with songs and silliness at the local county fair, the guys perform "Superstar," "I've Got the Joy," "The Crazy Dance," "The Ten Commandment Boogie," "This Little Light of Mine" and "That Acappella Sound." "Showtime" is advertised as "Great music for kids that won't drive their parents bonkers!"-indeed, far from it, people of all ages in the audience are up, dancing and singing along. Learning about Jesus and the teachings of the Bible becomes a celebration here, and everybody's included. Go, Fish!
Songlist: Go Fish Theme, Superstar, The Fair!, Jason's Pigs, I've Got The Joy, Jamie's Cow, Crazy Dance, Ten Commandments Boogie, Andy's Sheep, Dr. Atom, Why The Name, This Little Light, See You Next Time!, Bonus Material, Go Fish Bloopers, Promo video
