One of Clara Schumann's inspired settings of a Heine text. In the original key of E-flat major, the score opens with four full measures of introductory music. Chromatic harmony is stated and is soon followed with traditional dominant/tonic cadences. The ending is the same as the beginning: Sad, but comfortingly satisfying.
